[Q] Signal Mod question - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Did some searching, but not quite sure what the actual name is of what I am looking for, so hitting a wall. I'm trying to find out what it is actually called when the signal bars and 3g/wifi icons change colors when they are connected. I noticed it seems to do so on GB 2.3.7 roms, but not on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 ones I have loaded. Was this something that was added at a certain version of GB, or is it something that is able to be patched? Seems like (for my phone and what I use), I need to stick with 2.3.4 or 2.3.5, but I really like the function. Thanks for any replies.

I may not be fully understanding, but it might be something with the theme.
From what I remember, you can customize status bar icons with UOT kitchen or something...
Wait for someone else that has a more suitable response. Good luck.

I'll check Kitchen out - heard about it but never dove into it to check out. From what I understand, it's got something to do with when your account connects to the service in some form or another. Basically the signal strength and 3g/wifi icon (depending on what you are using at the time) will turn from white to green (or whatever your theme color is). For a specific example, it does so on the CM 7.2 rom, but not on TSM 5.0 'M'. I realize one is a 2.3.7 non 'Sense' and the other is a 2.3.4 Sense rom, so that's where my question stems from . Is it an added feature that arrived somewhere between 2.3.4 and 2.3.7, or is it a mod of some sort that could be patched to a 2.3.4 rom?

i was also curious abuot this, cause on my cm7.2 rom it changes from grey to teal A LOT, and when it's grey i have no 3g connectivity, whereas on my jellybean rom it doesn't happen near as often. maybe once every 2 days lol

Kitchen didn't have anything in it that would allow me to create a patch for what I am looking for. Still looking around for an answer, but guess it's not a big deal for most so not a lot of info around on it.

[Q] which *froyo* ROM would you recommend for desire?

Hi,
I'm currently on a stock ROM but I don't have enough memory anymore to install the apps that I want so I'm finally planning to make the step towards installing a custom ROM.
Unfortunatly there are so many (Leedroid, MIUI, CyanogenMod, ...) that a noob like me doesn't see the trees through the forest anymore
What are the ROM's (+ version) that the experienced flashers over here recommend?
I have a couple of prerequisites ;-)
- good battery life
- stable & everything working (bt, wifi, gps, ...)
- fast
- shortcuts to wifi, bt, data, gps, ... in the notification area
- all apps movable to SD card
Thanks for helping me making up my mind ;-)
PS I use launcherpro so sense or no sense doesn't matter
Cheers
B
EDIT 06/04:
OK I've tested a couple of GB ROMS: Oxygen, Redux and CM7
Overall functionality was very good on all of them although there are still some things on GB I'm not happy with
Basically reverted back to my Froyo
Anybody got a good fully functioning Froyo rom with good battery life and apps2sd?

personal opinion on the best roms available
Root -> S-OFF -> Bravo CM7 HBOOT -> CyanogenMod 7
And you will never use anything else.
Also its not worth moving all apps to SD, because SD card is much slower than phone internal memory. And so it wont be fast then.
Oxygen 2.x drains only 1% of my battery on standby every 4 hours with wifi on. VERY stable, havent found a single issue during 1 week of intensive testing. Its very fast... I have tried faster ones but at the cost of stability/incompatibility/issues with certain apps. It checks all your boxes, I cant recommend it enough.

That's RC2 but I guess you are using a newer release? Can you post the link pls.
It def does look fast!
I don't see wifi, bt, gps, ... toggles in the notification area, is that something you can set? It's not a dealbreaker but would be nice.

Hi,
I already found a couple of posts somewhere where people were mentionning worse battery performance with this ROM. I can't remember which version they were speaking of, but have there been battery improvements on this ROM?
What's your experience with it battery-wise?
additional questions:
- can you configure the toggles in the notification area to your liking? e.g. wifi - data network - bt - gps - vibrate
- is the dialer t9?
Thx!!

I would recommend you try AuraxTSense for decent battery life with all the other things that you want from a ROM. I have used it more than anything until last night when i installed iNsertCoin HD which is also pretty smooth.
I would suggest Redux 1.1.x

I guess you can remove the notification power widget if you choose to, maybe the user on that video did so, or maybe that feature wasn't implemented on RC2. Anyway latest version is 2.0.3, you can download it with the link I provided above and YES, there is a notification power widget included that you can configure as you like: Buttons, order, behaviour and everything.

Yeah, the battery drain issue has been fixed on latest versions, it wasnt AdamG's fault (he is the Oxygen developer), it has affected several different roms here around, kernel issue I guess. Anyway, it was very easy to fix editing wifi sleep policy options. And trust me, the battery consumption of this ROM is ridiculous. Have in mind Oxygen is made with simplicity and minimalism in mind, so you wont find any battery sucking features.
Yup, the notification area power widget is fully customizable, as I said above. In my case I removed the wifi on/off because I need it always on. I also added a button to toggle the flashlight, and the possibilities are endless.
Dialer T9? I'm sorry but I cant understand, I thought T9 was predictive stuff for text entry. Why would I need predictive text if phone numbers are just that, numbers? I guess I am confused, could you explain it to me?

Sorry, no clue, never tried that. BTW in case you are interested on installing a custom ROM, have in mind some of them require a custom MTD partition (Oxygen has its own). You can find them at alpharev.nl. Sounds much more complicated than it really is, dont be afraid.
To be completely honest, the first thing I did when I got my desire was to S-OFF it, root it, and install a custom ROM. The HTC stuff on it looked too much like bloatware to me and I love to tweak all my devices to get maximum performance.

I mean that when I want to call "alex" who is in my contacts I can just type 2539 in the dialpad and he will show me my contact "alex"
Just like it is now with my stock sense froyo... I open my dialer and I get my last called/received/missed calls + my dialer pad.
I can then just form the name of one of my contacts using the numeric keys

AOSP ROM's from Google have no T9 dialer, but that's why the Market is for. Dialer One or Dialer2 could be a good replacement.

I am in complete agreement with Tysken91.
I am not sure I will ever be completely happy with Battery life but this is my first smartphone device and I guess I need to get used to it.
With a combination of Y5 Battery saver (to turn off Wireless), Juice Defender and the Redux 1.1.1 (RC3), my battery life is quite good.
Cheers
Have tried most of the roms and found that MIUI is clearly the best!
Cyanogenmod v7.0.0 RC4 is really the best ROM i have tried so far.
But ofcourse it is very personal
hi,
thanks for the feedback... unfortunatly there's still not a clear winner apparently. I guess I expected it a bit, everybody has their own preference.
I've heard good things battery-wise about redux and oxygen so I think my choice will be one of these, anybody any good arguments why one is better then the other?
I really like Go Launcher currently but it's a bit laggy on my stock sense rom, so anybody had any experience with this launcher on any of these ROM's?
I've followed the noob guide with success, I've just partitioned my SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Now in the video the CM installation is performed, is there something special about the redux and oxygen installation?
Thx

Why download 2.3?

I just downloaded gingerbread and it left me questioning why I did. There is no black notification bar, no screen on/off animation, and no new sense that we were hoping for. Seems like just a disapointment to have to loose root for.

So you could have those flat, ugly status bar icons?
Allow's better custom roms to be built We might soon (or already have by now) a fully functioning Sense 2.1 ROM.
I was dissapointed as well. Went through lengthy process to finally get the phone updated properly and the new 2.3.3 still does not have support for multiple Exchange accounts (Which I wanted and the whole reason I wanted to upgrade)..
Why not just flash the stock root version? There was no reason to lose root access.
There's the quick power on, keyboard enhancements, and I've noticed the animation with the HTC clock widget. I've also noticed my battery life is a little bit longer than with froyo. Although I am also dissapointed that there is no new sense,

How do you know battery life is better after just a few hours? Not even enough time to run it completely dead yet
Wait the status bar isnt black?

Sorely disappointed in this update. I knew not to expect much, but I was hoping for SOMETHING to change, something visual, or spruce up the phone alittle bit.
IDK, maybe Im just spoiled with all the rom updates and the improvements and mods from the CM7 community.
CM7 guys, you ROCK! and I cant wait to see what more you can do with the actual 2.3 base.
my friend updated to this also. I was quite surprised how little had changed
The Gingerbread update is mostly a bug-fix with some new features - but not something radical (say like Windows 95 to Windows 7).
The notification bar is black for mine (I unrooted and received the OTA update from HTC/Sprint).
Also - the battery life (or better battery stats reading) alone is worth the update and wait for a new root method for Gingerbread for me. I immediately noticed (within two days of use) the battery improvements.
That, with the fact it runs as smooth/fast as, say, the Azrael 4.0 ROM (which is optimized and speedy) - right from the stock update - I'm content to deal with the Sprint Bloat again until someone roots it and I can go deleting those APKs again.
The GB isn't as Senseless (ah, I crack myself up) as you think. Mostly under hood improvements, and a few less appealing aesthetic changes.
XDA App - EVO - 2.3 unrooted. Help!

[Q] Notification Widgets MOD for 4.0.4

Looking to remain Stock 4.0.4 (from leak), but want one MOD: The Notification Widgets, like that of GummyNex or Cyanogen.
Don't know why I cannot find this stand-alone MOD...and don't know how to make on my own. I guess ROM makers want you to try their full ROM and not parts?
Please...if anyone knows how I can easily flash such a MOD to 4.0.4 OS, a million thanks coming your way. Pretty Please?
PS - gotta try 4.0.4 OS + Radios. Huge difference. Biggest improvement for me: Auto-Brightness finally works properly!
You mean something like Widgetsoid?
Yes, but Widgetsoid can't stay on top of notifications w/out constant cpu inputs (so I've read). I don't want it taking up any resources at all, until actually activated, and it should stay on top of all notifications.
Anyway to pull-out the GummyNex or CM notification widgets/controls and flash to 4.0.4? I must be on the wrong track, as I don't see anything about this...anywhere.
Thanks for trying to help!

[Q] WiFi reception in custom ROMs

The most difficult part about changing ROMs in my rooted Droid Incredible (DINC) has been WiFi reception.
When I tried "Touch of Blue" v2.2, reputed to be a slight and very stable mod of stock Verizon, my WiFi reception at home simply died. Constant reconnection attempts with no actual connection established.
The best experience was when I downgraded from Gingerbread (GB) 2.3.4 to Froyo 2.2 in order to root and set S-OFF. WiFi was easy and strong, especially at home (as you might expect).
Reading up on this here at xda & elsewhere on the Internet indicated that the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) minimum was set much higher in GB than Froyo (or perhaps Froyo did not even have such a minimum at all), which caused the problem. Some said this meant the ROM must be tweaked, others said the radio baseband, still others the kernel. A few thought a manual tweak of the RSSI settings was possible, but gave insufficient details.
In any case, my (still limited) experience with modded ROMS for the DINC has not been good.
Can anyone who has installed a modded ROM of any sort report about WiFi connectivity, and what it takes to get good quallity -- a particular radio, a particular kernel, etc?

I just wanted to not have to load a bunch of ROMs to find one that works well with my WiFi. As another Question thread I just submitted indicates, I have had a very difficult time changing ROMs (at least on a downgrade path).
I haven't had any wifi issues with my DInc. Here's my current setup:
Albinoman's AOSP JB ROM RC2
Tiny's Incredikernel 9-21-2012
Radio 2.15.10.12.20
I also had no issues with the downgraded radio that comes with Froyo during the unlock process.
Yeah, I've had wifi issues on the shiny blue dinc as well. My router broadcasts at nearly max db, meaning I can pick it up 3 stories away in a masonry building built in 1964, and yet the dinc sometimes won't show full bars when I'm sitting right next to it, and forget walking down the hall. About to try Pimp my Rom, but if anyone has other input it's much appreciated.

I've never noticed any difference in wifi between the many ROM's I've run in the year since I've been a dinc user. My list includes:
Stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread
MIUI Gingerbread
MIUI Ice Cream Sandwich
AOKP Ice Cream Sandwich
Evervolv Ice Cream Sandwich
Ice Cream Senseless (My favorite for a long, long time, though it now needs a mod to kill the OTA nag)
Mamarley Linaro ICS
Evervolv Jelly Bean
Pons CM10 (best ROM ever!)
I know there has been an update to the Wifi kernel drivers for our phones relatively recently, but I've been unable to tell any difference. Wifi reception on my phone is very similar to what I get on my laptop: satisfactory, though by no means stellar. The similarity is understandable, though, as they both have low-end Broadcom wifi chips.
I spent as little time as possible on Froyo, just long enough to get s-off. Changing ROMs has been very easy for me on the dinc, but then I am a Linux user and am quite comfortable on the command line, so my 'easy' may not be the same as yours.

[Q] Paranoid Android 2.99 Beta

I just went from BAMF to Paranoid Android 4.2 and for the life of me I can't figure out why so many people are talking up this ROM, could someone please explain it to me because I need to be missing something.
The only thing that looked interesting was the UI features which do not work correctly. The Opaque Statusbar and Taskbar do not work. Randomly they will go back to solid black then never goes back to Opaque. The Tablet UI seems awesome but the Taskbar buttons are way to small. So I figured I would change the DPI but it makes the Statusbar clock huge and the notifications area pop-up moves half-way off the screen rendering it unusable.
So after those features are taking away there really is no custom / developer settings on the ROM so it's pretty much pointless.
A lot of people like a tablet UI but don't like the smaller DPI or visa/versa et cetera.

I came from AOKP milestone 1 to PA 2.99.5 and while I like the 4.2 I'm thinking it might be time to go back to AOKP. I thought the Phablet UI was interesting but when I tried it... it didn't work correctly. I do like the per-app customization but I'd rather customize other areas of the phone with my time. Add I miss my integrated weather on the lockscreen.

You are pretty much in the same boat am I. I was just hoping something happened during my install of Paranoid and that's why it wasn't working or features were missing or something. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this ROM is defiantly lacking.
I am staying hopeful though. Once they get this ROM out of beta maybe Tablet UI will be working, and they will include some basic customization.
I do not see any problems with PA 2.99.5 whatsoever.. It works perfectly fine..smooth, good battery life, no lags, everything works as it should.. Once again, it is a matter of preference.. You putting up this thread was a matter of preference.. But once again, it is advisable that you do not complain by making a new thread.. Just post in the PA thread.. Molesarecoming is always open to constructive criticism..Once again, the word is "constructive criticism" the diversity of ROMs in the Galaxy Nexus community is what makes many stick with the nexus. so before bashing other ROMs, please just remember you not liking it, doesnt mean it's the same for others. I'm not bashing anyone work at all, honestly I just wanted to know if I was missing something from the ROM since so many seem to use it. I have used it for 2 days now and none of the UI tweaks are functional, or do not work properly or are just way to small with no functional way to increase size. But the ROM is smooth and quick with insane boot speed.
Here is info on PA 2.99+ in a nutshell. First and foremost, you all downtalking tabletui need to realize that it does not actually exist in android 4.2, the paranoidandroid team found it deactivated by google in the code for 4.2 and they spent their time making it available again, it is in no way a finished product, if you want to see it work good then download a version of PA with an android 4.1x base ( i.e. PA 2.54 or before). Now onto people that cannot see the big deal, well anyone that tried the pre 4.2 PA knows that there is more customization available in PA than any other rom put together. Now PA 2.99+ are all AOSP based instead of CM based so they basically are building this rom from scratch to improve speed, performance and battery life for everyone, this means that a lot is not even integrated back into the rom yet. Simply trying out the newest PA will not give you a feel for why it is hands down the best rom out there. As for transparency, that only works on the homescreen and in order to properly utilize it you must A. be using a compatible launcher which has the homescreen backgrounds drawn correctly ( i.e. Apex, Stock or Holo etc, NOVA does not work) B. Choose a correct transparent hexcode or slide the transparency bar to where you would like it for that said Launcher in the "apps" section of paranoid preferences. I am on 2.99 Beta 5 and have full transparency with no issues that you speak of (Photo included as proof), in fact, Beta 5 has added almost everything I want back into the rom and fully functional, I can hardly wait for v3.0, seriously, I cannot see ever using another rom after using paranoidandroid, it just has the edge on everything else out there. AOKP and CM have nothing on it especially when it's at 100% again, which will be in the next couple weeks at the rate it's awesome devs work at!
tabUI is not existant in 4.2, what you see right now is raw honeycomb. if you want to see how good it was install 2.54, thats still based on 4.1. but right now i got to make my hands dirty with this. i know that on xda most people do not understand the difference between developing and kanging, and they wonder "why's this rom slower than others" but someones gotta do the dirty work and im okay if crackflashers avoid ours. they avoid cm for the same reason.
as for hybrid engine, i dont think you have understood it yet. it works flawless and it gives you more customization than all roms on xda combined, IF you can handle it. yes, you are able to make a button pink in this and that rom, but hybrid can transform thousands of apps and components to the better, with practical implications that are unheard of. the apps that are running on your huge 720p screen were not optimized for it, they're in the same layout that applies to pocketwatches or stone age miniature phones like the htc wildfire.
as for opacity, no app, obviously, draws underneath the bars - why would it. the launcher can do it, but again - not all do. nova has even a bug that offsets the wallpapers which leaves a black gap. our launcher works, apex works, holo works and perhaps a bunch of others. no rom does it differently, simply because its impossible.
the real difference is that we are producing features that push androids boundaries, we are sick of a homogen rom culture that hasnt really moved one inch for a couple of years now. all these roms are the same, do you realize that? kanging has produced one grey mass and nothing stands out. when we are done with our beta we will of course bring in all the essential features aswell, but new features have greater priority. and these blow everthing related to it clean out of the water.
compare build.prop hacks with hybrid engine, its like night and day. this is quite possibly the biggest rom scene improvement android has ever had.
compare rom scene color tweaks with per-app-color, its like night and day. normal roms are static, they give you one color and thats that. our colors shift from app to app.
compare extended desktop (which also came from us) with per-app-fullscreen
compare our recents with clearall implementations,
we had the most versatile toggles on android in 4.1 (right now we're implementing a new panel which will come in beta6)
etc.
but you got to understand that this stuff takes alot of time. i know i could just rename an open source rom, call myself "founder," post in 30 device forums and make craploads of money here on xda, but i chose not to and im happy i found a few guys that think in the same way. im content with the few people that use PA and the support i get from those, i dont see myself competing with any other rom for that matter. i dont feel like i have to stop all my work now just because this and that rom has a minor option that we dont have at the moment.

as for hybrid engine, i dont think you have understood it yet. it works flawless and it gives you more customization than all roms on xda combined, IF you can handle it. yes, you are able to make a button pink in this and that rom, but hybrid can transform thousands of apps and components to the better, with practical implications that are unheard of. the apps that are running on your huge 720p screen were not optimized for it, they're in the same layout that applies to pocketwatches or stone age miniature phones like the htc wildfire.
as for opacity, no app, obviously, draws underneath the bars - why would it. the launcher can do it, but again - not all do. nova has even a bug that offsets the wallpapers which leaves a black gap. our launcher works, apex works, holo works and perhaps a bunch of others. no rom does it differently, simply because its impossible.
the real difference is that we are producing features that push androids boundaries, we are sick of a homogen rom culture that hasnt really moved one inch for a couple of years now. all these roms are the same, do you realize that? kanging has produced one grey mass and nothing stands out. when we are done with our beta we will of course bring in all the essential features aswell, but new features have greater priority. and these blow everthing related to it clean out of the water.
compare build.prop hacks with hybrid engine, its like night and day. this is quite possibly the biggest rom scene improvement android has ever had.
compare rom scene color tweaks with per-app-color, its like night and day. normal roms are static, they give you one color and thats that. our colors shift from app to app.
compare extended desktop (which also came from us) with per-app-fullscreen
compare our recents with clearall implementations,
we had the most versatile toggles on android in 4.1 (right now we're implementing a new panel which will come in beta6)
etc.
but you got to understand that this stuff takes alot of time. i know i could just rename an open source rom, call myself "founder," post in 30 device forums and make craploads of money here on xda, but i chose not to and im happy i found a few guys that think in the same way. im content with the few people that use PA and the support i get from those, i dont see myself competing with any other rom for that matter. i dont feel like i have to stop all my work now just because this and that rom has a minor option that we dont have at the moment.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
PA 2.54 on epic 4g touch
I just flashed to this rom yesterday and really like it so far. I am interested in flashing to the newest 2.99 version. Where I can get the correct download for my phone, and do I need to update my recovery and if so, where do I get the link for that?
Thanks

I think the new 4.2 based PA roms might only be available for the Nexus series phones and tablets currently since the developers have started over building it from the ground up using AOSP source instead of CyanogenMod. I am not certain if the code is out there for other devs to build on their particular devices yet though.
