Hello all,
Last week I installed CWM V5.0.2.6 on my Samsung Galaxy Gio, in order to flash Adobe Flash support. Everything went accordingly, so I was a happy camper !
After reading some topics about flashing new roms, I got really interested in trying some of them.
But just to be safe I thought I better make a nandroid backup first.
Unfortunately I failed in making a backup because of the following errors:
Code:

Backing up recovery image...
Backing up system...
Can't mount /system !
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
etc.
etc.
So I took a look at the topic of the newer version 5.0.2.7
It states the following:
5.0.2.7
If you use stock rom or custom rom with rfs filesystem, you must use cwm with ext4+rfs
cwm-5.0.2.7-ext4only-odin.tar.md5 (Flash With ODIN)
signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4only.zip (Flash from Recovery)

Since I'm using a stockrom 2.3.5, I'm guessing I need the last one called signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery) right ?
If yes:
Can I Flash it from CWM, or should I use stock recovery ?
Will my sd card get formatted ?
This is very important to know, because my sd card has 2 fat partitions and I don't want them to get wiped. I use link2sd and the second fat partition contains the data and Dalvik stuff.

I would have posted my question in the actual Android Development forums, but since I'm a n00b I'm not allowed (yet).

I installed cwm 5.0.2.6 rfs+ext on my stock rom and then installed cwm 5.0.2.7 rfs+ext w/o any problems.

Oh and yes signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip is correct to use with cwm.
I think your post is in the correct place this isn't a developing question but a usage/user question.
Thanx for your reply, but if I were to install say a custom rom like CyanogenMod 9.0.0, I wouldn't be able to restore my stock backup because of the filesystem mismatch (RFS vs EXT), right ?
I would be in the same boat as you are in your topic about the same matter, wouldn't I ?
So what good would a backup do in that case ?
Or could I do it like this ?
install CM9 -> flash stockrom with Odin -> restore backup with CWM ?

Yep that is what i'm going to try. As you can read in my thread.
Kinda depends on your definition of ruined. My phone works fine I just don't know if the ROM I had any specific changes then the one you download from Online.
I guess I will find out. I don't think I will try said above today perhaps tommorow. I'll keep you posted on how it went.
Tbh idk if there are other ways to backup your initial ROM apart from cwm, but thats too late for me now
FYI I also tried CM9 its not usable yet for day to day use its still in the beta stages.

Why the 3`rd step ? "restore backup with CWM ?" since u install stock rom with Odin u will have the rom that came with your phone look in the other topic i posted a link for latest Netherlands stock rom

I know, but when you flash a stock rom with Odin, you will lose all your settings. Your phone will be when like you bought it
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that a CWM backup was something similar to a Ghost backup, thus making a backup of your phone in it's current state. Including all settings / ringtones / Wifi hotspots etc. etc.
So if you restore the CWM one, you will have your previous settings back.
Or doesn't it work that way ? If not then the 3rd step isn't needed indeed.

U are right, u will loose all your settings . Then yes if u really don`t want to start fresh then u need the 3`rd step
Then u need to add an 2.5 step after u install with Odin the stock rom, u need to flash CWM again and after that try to restore from your backup that u made. U don`t make stupid comments we all learn new things every day

I'm finally able to make backups without freezes, and now I get MD5 error all the time
I tried this fix discovered by r.ionescu, but I'm still out of luck.

I can't. If I recall correct, PX-recovery is for ext4-only.
I'm on stock rom, so RFS
Yes, thats why you need extformatter, to format your partitions to ext4, and his latest upload backs up first automatically so no data loss..

Which recovery you are using?
If using CWM try using Phiexz recovery.

I am using CWM Pheixz's version
I´m having the exact same problem. Also on stock rom. Installed Phiexz 2.0.2.7 rfs + ext.
And most of the times my phone hangs at backup up cache. Another user also reported it in the CWM thread, but Phiexz doesn´t seem to be very willing to respond. I made a few posts about it, and even pm´d him, but he just wont give an anwer unfortunately.
I managed to do a ´full´ backup once, but also encountered md5 errors.
I tried restoring stock from CWM backup and failed each time. The only method to get back stock I found successful was Odin, but it's from the scratch, not from the backup.
Did you guys try px-recovery? If I didn't have probably unrestorable stock with custom kernel right now, I'd try that myself.
The only CWM I found to be working reliable with stock rfs partitions is the one from here: http://particle.blurringexistence.net/samsung-gt-s5660/clockworkmod-recovery (AFAIK, first CWM build for S5660), by the author of Particle ROM.
If you come from ext4 (CM or derivatives), follow these steps to ensure proper functioning of this CWM version with stock rom:
1. Flash a stock rom using ODIN to get the rfs partition back
2. Use an SD card reader to format the sd-ext (from your microsd card) partition to ext2
3. Flash this CWM with ODIN or install the zip version through stock recovery
Note: skip 2 if you never did set up a sd-ext partition
That should do it, in my case backup/restores are working beautifully, on stock 2.3.6

Flashing stock formats system to rfs, this works for every recovery, and is very annoying if you need to flash a stock rom and connect it to pc just to restore a backup..

LOL, I never said he has to flash stock/connect to pc each time he would backup - that would be redundant and useless... I provided these steps IN CASE he ever used CM or other roms with ext4. I think the OP isn't switching between ext4 and rfs on regular basis, so flashing is a one time operation in the case mentioned.
Most combined rfs/ext4 CWM are quite buggy on rfs system; only one I have used without any issues (hangs, errors whatever) on rfs is this one.
try to use particle's cwm recovery.its working fine.
It worked for me ... just flashed it through recovery ... Now after trying ICS beta7 I will try to restore that ROM back ... if that works than Kudos!

Hey everyone.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M With Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread that I got from Bell Aliant Along With a Motorola Xoom Wifi Canadian That I bought at Wal-Mart one day.
I am intrested in flashing Custom Roms onto My Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I have Rooted and Installed ClockworkMod on my Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I have recently been looking up stuff on how to install them onto my Samsung Galaxy Gio Gt-S5660M. I recently attempted to install Android 4.0.3 Ice cream Sandwich onto it. and I realized that I installed the wrong one because it was for the S5660M Model Not the GT-S5660M, Resulting into a boot failure. as the screen would fade out to black when booting to the Operating System. I was still able to access the Recovery mode (I never Had ClockworkMod Installed at that time) and the Custom ROM Download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power button) but it would fail to connect to my PC (Windows 7 Home Premium & Ubuntu Linux 64-bit) So Later on I told my dad about it and he sent it to bell Aliant to get it fixed. And now I would like to know how I can install a custom ROM and If I ever come across this problem again, how can i solve it without taking it to Bell Aliant to get fixed (Since it's a software related issue)

When you flash a rom it is very important to do a backup before hand. You sound like your new to this so your in the right place. Whenever you do a back up and you run into a problem like the one you ran in to, it's very simple to restore back to its original state. Also, most companies won't cover software issues once they figure out your rooted. So you might run in to a problem with your company. My advice is to read read read read and ask as many questions as possible before doing anything to your phone you aren't sure about.

Some more things, it is very useful for you to download ROM MANAGER and TITANIUM BACKUP from the app store. These two apps are life savers when you run in to the problem you had. Also read on how to use clock work mod recovery. Try to get very acquainted with that program as it will be ure main life saver in any situation.

hold the power button, the volume down button, and the HOME button at the same time, when the phone is off. then use a tutorial on how to flash roms with ODIN, download a rom from sammobile.com

Would I install them something like this?:

2. Go to recovery mode

but I can't get the "GT-s5660m" Option to show up on it. Maybe it's the M on the end of it
After the installation is finished, you need to do a factory reset, then reboot.
Otherwise you cant boot.
And for cm9 it may be required to have atleast a gingerbrea2.3.x rom

Rom manager isnt good for the new ones, cause they will probably end up with a nice brick to throw at you

I have Android 2.3.4 on it will that work?
Also how can I backup my Stock rom on it as well.
I noticed a backup and restore option in Clockworkmod as well (I have Version 5.0.2.6) Will that work incase I mess up again?
First of all, do not use ROM Manager to install CWM, you will brick the device doing so.
The nandroid backup function in CWM should work, but having a working Odin install with your Odin-flashable stock ROM backup is always a nice plus.
While I don't have one personally, there have been reports on here of the same USB jig (a micro USB connector with the appropriate resistor between pins 4 and 5) used on the Galaxy S Vibrant working on the Gio as well. This is if it doesn't want to go into download mode anymore.
These are a few gotchas with flashing ROMs on the Gio I can think of right now:
-Don't flash the Euro baseband on the 5660M and vice versa. (The AMSS image in Odin tar files)
-Be sure to have your partitions in the appropriate file system format, and CWM to go with it. I'm talking about ext4 and Samsung's stock, and proprietary RFS format.
If you have the usual MUGK3 stock ROM all Canadian 5660Ms have been delivered with, install CWM (via Odin, or with root and the dd command), format to ext4 and install the latest CM9 nightly zip file. Nothing more to it really.

I am not going to use ROM Manager to begin with. as my device is not listed.
I used the recovery to install Clockworkmod (CWM)
Also I noticed that some ROMs are strictly for S5660M Not the GT-S5660M.
If I want to Install a Rom That For the GT-S5660 Does it Matter if it has the "M" in the name of my model? as in GT-S5660M
Also is it possible to flash zip files with odin?
Or has the ROM only have to be in tar format?
One last thing
Well, Before I start flashing (Because I'm pretty close to knowing now)

1) Does it matter about my Model code for a ROM?
EX: ROM Made for the S5660 or GT-S5660 And I want to Install it on my GT-S5660M

1 .zip files that you flash via recovery can be flashed easily, thats fine
Just watch out with odin roms like gioprio, they contain a baseband and you will have no service, but can easily be solved by flashing a m model baseband

So you're saying that I should install Cm7 and then CM9?
Would It matter if I choose CM7 or CM7.2?
and you're also saying I should install a ROM that has Android 2.3.X instead of one with Android 4.0.X?
OH! I forgot to ask one last question:
Where can I get a Stock ROM For my GT-S5660M?
Can I get it off my phone or would I have to download it off a website?
Yea I know I may asking a lot of questions, I just want to know how I can install a ROM properly without bricking it.

There is a compiled list of all ROMs for the 5660 and 5660m Gio in the development area.
the Stock Rom for 5660M (The GT is nothing to worry about) is this link

There are a few other custom roms made only for the 5660M.
You can absolutely use a rom that is s5560, but note:
If you are selecting a Rom that is flashed using odin, always open the .tar using winzip or 7zip and just check for a file called amss ... this is the broadband file which would cause you to lose your phone signal. if you want to use the ROM, remove that amss file.
is you are flashing a rom through clockwordmod, these don't change the broadband.
so you can freely use any of those ones, such as cm7, 7.1, 7.2 9 or other based on stock roms.
Cyanogenmod (cm) requires the internal file system to be ext4, where as most Rom based on stock can use either rfs (stock file system) or some do support ext4 internal for a bit of increased speed.

About this Ext4formatter.zip that voetbalremco mentioned, where can I get it to, would I do this before installing the rom or after installing the ROM?
I know that I need to wipe cache partition, factory reset, and wipe Dalvik cache.
Would I do all of this first or after installation?

You use it before installing, same thing with the wipes.
By the way, this ext4formatter is a one time event.
Once it is done, its done.
The wiping is every time before you install a different rom.

I just rooted my Samsung GIO (GT-S5660) and installed CWM 5.0.2.6. So, currently, I still have my good old stock rom (android 2.3.6)
To go further I would like to make a nandroid back'up, BUT CWM can't load system, data and cache ("error mounting /system")... thus it doesn't backup stuff.
I would like to replace CWM with PX Recovery. Can I do this at this stage? (using stock recovery and dreaming at Cyanogen 9)
And... note that PX Recovery has only support for ext4. This means I won't be able to use it with my stock rom?
My insecurity comes from the fact I didn't quite understood in which case of the following I'm in:
ext4 only

U can't use px recovery since stock ROM's use RFS Filesystem and px recovery supports only ext4 and by the way why using old cwm? Use latest one which supports rfs file system

If I understood correctly, you are telling me that my CWM 5.0.2.6 doesn't support RFS.
Based on this, my current STOCK rom is not supported.
This is why I can't mount those partitions?
Continuing the logic, installing PX Recovery won't change my situation; it won't support my STOCK rom.
Finally... Your advice is to (remember that currently I'm using my stock rom):
install ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.7 ext+rfs (Phiexz)
make nandroid backup of my stock rom (should work, right?)
use ext4-formatter.zip ?? (do I need this step? what should I expect to happen if I flash this?)
install CM9 by Phiexz or Maclaw

.Yea u should install Clockworkmod which supports
both filesystem
.Well u can make backup but if u flash the and custom rom and ext4 formatter zip ur filesystem will be ext4 and not rfs so u wouldnt be able to restore it but u wouldnt brick ur phone tht easily
.Install any ROM u want
. Flash ext4-filesystem formatter.zip when u flash the ROM.(In my case i really didnt flash this zip when i go from stock to custom rom i just rebooted and waited for some mins and then it booted)

I have some questions and need help fast if possible. I'm currently on CM10 beta 2 and only have a nandroid backup from being stock rooted. I know you can't simply restore a backup from jelly bean to ICS. I was playing with ROM Toolbox, and was installing some custom transitions. I did a backup of the stock transitions, but the zip backup file won't flash in recovery. Anyway I can't boot up and only get the Galaxy S II boot screen. I can however get into download and CM CWM based recovery. I've done quite a few searches, with no real answers for this issue. Any help will be greatly apreciated because I don't have my phone until I figure out exactly what to do. Do I have to download a stock ROM with cusom kernel to computer then transfer over file via usb using Odin and then use CWM to flash the stock ROM? I know not to do a factory wipe unless I'm on el26 or 29. I also know you can odin to them then flash, but all the odin kernels with CWM are from ICS and I can't find a solid method for my specific situation.

Use the one click.exe full rom file that will flash the full el29 gb rom. Then from there you can flash cwm to flash cm10 or whatever rom you want.
But do I have to go el29 or 26? How do I get there from where I'm at now? Thanks again, and sorry I just want to be 100% here.
Edit: Okay, great. After flashing that I obviously could do my nandroid restore? Just because I lost some pictures or something happened when I flashed to JB because I only had a few pics and none of my SMS or call logs or anything came through.
Ok, just so the thread is not a complete waste, I did flash the stock ROM via PC ODIN. Went back to stock, was able to do a nandroid restore, and went ahead and flashed CWM recovery via Mobile ODIN. Went ahead and wiped factory in CWM recovery and flashed CM10. Thanks again Blues, next time I'll just post in your noob thread. . I'm not a noob but I just never had to PC ODIN when not being able to boot and wasn't sure how safe it was in my specific state.
