Rooting without custom recovery - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just want to change my kernel to Trinity to increase battery life and root my nexus because some apps requires root permission but don't want to change my stock jelly bean 4.2
Is it possible? If yes how?
Please reply
I am new to android and have never rooted my nexus nor unlocked my boot loader
I did tried to search xda forum but all the post have mentioned about rooting with custom recovery
I don't want custom recovery
please help

Follow this guide.
It will involve setting up fastboot and adb (won't take long at all). Then instead of flashing a custom recovery, you can boot into it, flash the superSU zip found in the second link and when you reboot you will be rooted, with stock recovery.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick reply
Will that change my kernel to Trinity or can you suggest any good kernel for increasing battery life?
From what I have searched on threads Trinity seems to be the best when it comes to getting max screen on time
So can you provide any link of for changing the kernel to any battery saving kernel like Trinity and still be on stock jelly bean?

Mmm, flashing a custom kernel will require a custom recovery I'm afraid, there's no way around that.
You could however do the same thing as you will do to get root (fastboot boot, not flash a custom recovery) and then flash the kernel, but you would have to do that every time you update the kernel as well.
My recommendation is that if you want to flash custom kernels, flash the latest TWRP recovery (2.3.2.1 I think) and do it that way.
For any questions about Trinity, just ask in the thread, I check it often, but people will be happy to help you there, they're an awesome bunch.
Also I would highly recommend Trinity, I've used it a lot. At the moment though I am using stock, rooted 4.2 while the devs start playing around with the new source. Once it's more stable I am sure I'll be back on it though.

OTA

So I know the rule about never accepting otas but I was asked a question and couldn't remember. So if I accept an ota will it brick my phone or will it just update and unroot?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
depends on what you did to your phone with root access.
are you on stock? ROM?
Yea stock rom just rooted
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well if you are on stock and you rooted, you will most likely lose your root (although some posts around here say that root aces is preserved during update in some rare cases).
If you are on a custom rom (e.g. if you installed an update using a custom recovery) and you are updating to a stock update then you will be likely screwing your phones system. depending on where you messed (or let a programmer mess using custom recovery or Rom managers) you could be bricking your phone as well since there are updates for boot and recovery in the stock updates to 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 (I don't count 4.0.3 since google pulled it off their site).
If you want a stock version of the newest android for your GN make it a manual patch by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 make sure you do flash the boot, recovery and radio as well...
But before you do that check in with the forum thread or website were you got your custom rom or root method and ask them for advice, Yeah do that! It's the safest way to do something when you know how others got to the point where you wanna go!
Thx alot

Please let us know how things worked out for you.
Hint: after following the steps above you are on the official google builds. Nice thing about that is you get new android versions as updates on the very second they are released. And most things that come with root are already available in the unrooted system (except overclocking) so why bother about root and stuff when you as a non-developing user can acces more priveleges on stock while rom builders for other phones try to keep up with YOUR system?

I'm completely stock right now just a rooted 4.0.2 I will probably stay like this until cm9 becomes stable or AokP next milestone comes out because he current one did not agree with my phone at all

Custom Kernel and Unrooted Stock

Hello. I've tried to find this answer through searching but have had not much luck. I was wondering if its possible to use a custom kernel with an unrooted stock from. I would like to increase battery life but my company uses Good for Enterprise which cannot function on a rooted device. Any help here would be much appreciated.

As far as i know you have to root your phone to install a custom kernel. So you might want to look into getting an extended battery.
I believe that you could. You wouldn't be able to change any of the kernel setting tho unless maybe you could make flashable zips to change them.

A kernel comes way before any user installed app. You can indeed install a custom kernel without root, either by fastboot or cwm. Keep in mind you dont even need to flash cwm permanently, just temporarly to flash kernel zip.

[Q] Is overclocking possible on rooted stock?

I was wondering if the SGH-T999 was able to achieve overclocking - I looked around the forums and found no information about it, so I decided to ask...I know some ROMs have it, but I'd like to stay on insecure rom for the time being.
So the question is: Can I overclock my Galaxy III without flashing a custom rom, using only the insecure rom flashed by the QCom Toolkit? and If so, how?
Download set cpu and find out. Only custkm kernels can over clock and even those dont all the time.

I'm on Custom stock - I don't know the specific name for it, since I flashed it using the QCom Toolkit (the file is called "boot-insecure-tmo-t999uvalem-cwm")...but I know it works since it installed superuser.
That just gave you cwm recovery, root, and you are now able to flash custom ROMs and kernels. So the answer is no you will need to flash a kernel that is able to be over clocked and works with stock
This might work just read the forum

I flashed the Trinity Kernel, and am so far very pleased with it. Sure, it only goes up to 1.75 Ghz, but that's enough for now. Should I feel like going higher, then I might look into Adama, specially since the creator himself warns that it's a bit risky.

Simple instructions requested!

Hello,
I'm getting this device next week and I'll be unlocking the bootloader straight away but the amount of instructions for flashing ROMs is baffling me. In the past It's been a process of install custom recovery then flashing a ROM (full wipe) reboot and job done but there's plenty more steps for this device so can anyone break it down for me because I'm pretty confused especially when it comes to rebooting into another menu to flash a boot.img or something.
Also, I'm thinking of sticking on a Stock Sense (but with bloatware removed and rooted) just to test Sense out before I move back to my comfort zone of CM9/CM10 so how would I go about this? Is there any bloatware free pre-rooted fully working stock Sense roms available?
Finally, there's a load of information about kernels which I'm new to due to never having to worry about flashing them in the past. I'd be happy with sticking to one single kernel (So I don't have to mess about with them every time I flash a new ROM- if that's possible?) so which one is the best for general daily usage, and has over-clocking enabled.
Thanks.
There are not additional steps to flash for this device.in fact it is easy. When I was new here at XDA I also was too confused. Flashing a kernel seemed impossible to me.
But I began to read the internet and the forums extensively and slowly learned.
Try ckpv5's my sense v rc2.0 very smooth pre-rooted rom.u can always uninstall the bloatware using Titanium Backup.
Unfortunately as our device is s-on u will have to flash the kernels every time u change a rom unless both of them need the same kernel.
The provision rom feels great for everyday use.use the latest Hellboy kernel that can be OCd plus added KSM support.

Thanks for the replies.
I was also wondering if I'm right in thinking this is the right order (For rooting my device via the Toolkit);
Unlock Bootloader
Flash Recovery
Do a Nandroid just in-case anything buggers up in the future.
Flash a Sense-based Kernel (So I can overclock etc otherwise I could completely skip this step I guess)
Click the 'PermRoot' extra in Toolkit.
Job done.
Does that sound about right? I think I'll just stick with Stock Sense for the first few weeks or so and if I get sick of it I'll move to a custom. I'd be happy with a Rooted stock device though just to get rid of the bloatware and have access to Adaway & Titanium Backup.
Thank you.
Yes that order sounds right but if you dont want custom right now and want to remain stock,no need to flash any kernel!just remove the kernel step from the order
Sent from my One V using xda app-developers app
But I'd need to flash a new kernel in order to over clock (unless the stock kernel is overclockable) or is the devices performance and battery fine with stock levels/governor?
Thanks for the reply

Stock kernel is not OCable.tell u what, since u want to remain on stock now, root it and remain on stock for now.then after u get comfy after rooting it and get settled, flash a JB rom and a custom kernel.stock is always laggy.

One does not simply root his HOV and remains on stock!!!
HE WANTS TO STAY ON STOCK FOR THE FIRST FEW WEEKS!
Secondly, i am saying that since he is a bit confused about the toolkit and kernels and all,he should flash kernels later.thats a bit advanced.he will root it and then may learn a bit more and then experiment with kernels and stuff.

I'm not a complete noob when it comes to flashing ROMs etc seeing as though I've tinkered around with my last 2 devices. Its just the process seems a bit of a pain (The order and rebooting into different menus to flash kernels etc) so I'd rather read into it and get comfortable with the process. So I'd like to just root it so I can uninstall any bloatware and third party apps I can reinstall from the Play Store, I'd also like to add Adblock (A big reason I root my phones). I'll be flashing a ROM as soon as I find a fully working (100%) ROM (any recommendations and a simple step by step guide to install would be amazing too)
Thanks

Issues with Xperia S

Hi Everyone
I unlocked my bootloader a few months ago, rooted, and I flashed a version of ICS, which I think is stock. I dont have receovery installed, I tried to sort that out last night, but I got lost amongst and couldnt work out what to install and how.
Its 4.0.4 - 6.1.A.2.45 - and I am having a few issues with it. It seems to be laggy, the camera freezes when recording video and often crashes and doesn't save the video and the WIFI is just hopeless!
Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a better .ftp for me to flash? Please leave links if possible because this issue is just driving me insane!
thanks!
Amanda
hi, try to locked your bootloader then repair via pc companion.
and also, for your other question click my signature "Read ME".
If it's unlocked the bootloader then fastboot a custom kernel. Advanced stock is great. Then flash a custom rom. May as I flash a Jellybean rom

I just installed ROM manager and found out clockwork recovery doesn't work for us why does everything have to be so hard with this phone?

Just have a look at the custom kernels and chose one then fast boot or use the flash tool, cwm works for us

The only problem with this is, you need to flash the doomkernal, which requires flashing back to GB? Then you need to install a host of other apps to get it too work. Just so I can flash a custom rom, wow, nothing is easy is it,
This phone is just so damned hard to do anything with, I am considering going to the new Samsung when it comes out in a few months!
No just flash advanced stock kernel instead from development forum. It's ridiculously easy once you're unlocked and have a cwm kernel flashed
Download a custom rom to the phone (i recommend pac rom)
Download advanced stock kernel to pc. Fastboot using that guide.
Then boot into recovery and install zip from sd and pick pac rom (follow the guidelines in pac rom thread for flashing)
