Firstly please check the link..
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire-3077.php
so..as u can see our Desire's screen glass is Gorilla glass confirmed only by gsmarena and i also checked other sites but none of them contain this spec.
so i'm kinda confused regarding this, coz i dont want to use my phone with plastic screen which protector worn out within few days and have to change over and over again..
so what is ur xperience using Desire without any screen protector?
Just NO. Yep, sure it doesn't get scratched by keys and knives, but if you keep it in your pocket thin and sharp dust particles can be deadly. A friend of mine tried to go without a screen protector, and after a month or so there were a few light scratches...guess what happens if you go on like that for a year or so. Also, the first time you go to the seaside you're screwed: so happened to my gf with her brand new ipod touch, which now has a big nice smile in the middle of the screen...dust/sand particles are really dangerous, even for gorilla glass, believe me.
Firstly a screen protector wont 'wear out' within a few days, unless you have finger nails like edward scissorhands then itll last for months before needing to be changed.. ive had my cheap protector on for 3 months already and its still as good as new.. not bad whan it was something like a quid for 6.. and when i do come to change it I know theres still a pristine screen underneath.
Secondly even if it is so called gorilla glass its not immune to getting scratched, isnt it best to have an extra layer that can get scratched before the glass below it does?
You just have to look at the state of some iphones to realise gorilla glass isnt all its cracked up to be
Absolutely no scratches
My Desire was one of the first delivered last year - and until today there is absolutely no scratches on the glass. And I wear the phone with me every day, it has fallen into the dust etc., etc. The metal frame has scratches, the metal plate around the cover of the camera. But not the front glass. I'm really extremely happy with the glass quality.

You might have been lucky there..ever tried to look at it under a very strong light? Micro scratches aren't very likely to be seen in normal use.
I scrached it with sand so easy and once it felt on flor and got deep and wide scraches on glass and small bumps on metal. When screen is off I can see scraches easy.

I confirm: absolutely no scratches. NO. Not big, not micro. None. Niente. Nada. Nirwana. Gar Nix. Rien du tout.
And if they aren't noticeable under normal light what does it matter
My 1st desire arrived the day after orange put them on sale, so it was one of the 1st. After 2 weeks of keeping it in my suit pocket the screen had some nice scratches on it (probably from a lighter). So I would say all ways have a protector on it, in my case a Zagg which went on my 2nd desire, 1st one got sent back as it was playing up later to be found out it was due to using some power saving app, least the replacement arrived with no scratches and the zagg went straight on.
Someone should do this to their Desire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2EYnUGUti0
Until then, I do not believe this has gorilla glass.

omg!!!! thats brutal!!!
thanks all for helping me to determine weather should i use my desire with or without screen protector....
so the bottom line is our desire actually doesn't have gorilla glass screen and it is not advised from most of u that not to use without screen protector...
Well, tbh i don't know wether it's gorilla glass or not...what i do know about that kind of glass is that it offers a good resistance when you try to break it, and it's overall more durable, otherwise it's like any kind of scratch resistant glass. This said, there's plenty of vids on youtube showing gorilla glass getting scratched (like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimSyAIuDoI&feature=youtube_gdata_player), so why risking it, i'd say
I'm fairly certain its not Gorilla Glass since I've got a couple fairly big scratches through normal use.

Well it still means that it can be scratched: if it falls face down on gravel you can be quite sure you'll get something noticeable
Also, maybe tiny scratches won't annoy you, but for sure they will affect screen durability...i mean it could crack more easily you know.
Hey man, i don't wanna be a ****, i just wanna say that all of the superduper hax glass powered devices i had or stumbled across in my long phone nerd career got scratched sooner or later...but hey, at the end of the story it's your baby, not mine
Also its kind of pot luck wether you get a good qualitly screen protector.
I bought mine for like £2 for 6 and they show scratches after a week
whereas my friends ones, which were also bought from ebay for a similar price do not
show one scratch in months, and hes a bmx rider and his phone goes through alot
more than mine. All his friends with iphones have cracked screens so its stronger than
that at least. Ill always use a screen protector anyway, gorilla glass or not.
people...google it. here is a link. my desire has no scratches at all, and i hate screen protectors. i like my phone pure - without anything on it. all the best
I cannot post links, so go to the corning gorilla glass and see the products
the desire definitely does not have gorilla glass. it is very odd that corning who makes gorilla glass says that the desire does have it though that is incorrect as htc has said it does not. i had my desire without a case for a few weeks and it has 2 micro scratches that can only be seen when you shine a light on it while the screen is off. i hate the feel of screen protectors so i just have a plastic case for it and i haven't seen any new scratches on it for over a year.
er...just buy a case, no screen protectors needed. My Desire is 12 months old and not a mark on it. Case I use hardly adds any bulk whatsoever.

Just got a HTC Evo 4G last week. I've had it in the Otterbox Defender case since day one. Lately, I've been trying to find a screen protector that covers the whole face of the phone. I've been unsuccessful in doing that. But, a guy was telling me that without a screen protector, the Evo's screen is hard to scratch. He told me that if I kept the phone in the Otterbox (which has a screen protector of it's own), that the phone would most likely never scratch.
Is there any truth to this?

Gorilla Glass is used for the Evo's screen and it's super durable. I used to use a screen protector (which ended up getting pretty scratched up), but I've been going without one for about 6 months and my screen is fine. I guess I really never needed the screen protector in the first place.
Thanks for the answer.
Where does it say that's the Evo's screen is gorilla glass?
I've never read that anywhere.
It certainly may be difficult to scratch but that doesn't make it gorilla glass.
@op
My brother had his evo in the otterbox and some sand got in between the screen protector and the screen and it wreaked havoc. It was extremely scratched...
You can buy some cheap screen protectors on eBay for a couple bucks.

Gorilla Glass website here under HTC
The EVO 4G, EVO 3D and EVO Shift all are listed.
I didn't know that it was Gorilla Glass for the first year of owning my EVO, but was relieved when I found out. Since then, I've been going without a screen protector.
strong enough?
One of my friends got into a motorcycle accident with his EVO in his pocket, and the phone was literally curved like a C shape from the impact, the screen was all cracked, but still continued to function okay... haha
I landscaped all summer and my Evo screen was scratched pretty badly. Don't let anybody tell you that an Evo screen cannot be scratched.
Pretty Damn Strong!
I've dropoped my phone four times and all Ive done is ding up the sides but I will say you can't throw it at a pole I tried and the screen did not succeed I was out a hundred dollars for insurance payment. THe evo is one strong phone that just keeps giving.
Well, I wasn't asking this because I planned on using my EVO for anything extreme. I asked to see whether or not putting a screen protector on while using an otterboor a ballistic case was a big deal.

I would say in the end it depends on what you do with your phone. I keep mine in my pocket (not with my keys or change or anything that could scratch the screen) most of the day and am mindful about where I set my phone, so I go without the screen protector.
If your phone is more exposed to things that will scratch it up, then I'd say grab a screen protector.
My wife keeps a screen protector on hers, since she keeps hers in her purse and it tends to get jumbled around with her keys and such.
The screen is tough and scratch resistant, but not scratch proof. You'd probably be safe from light scratches.
I have dropped mine numerous times and the screen has held up longer than then case.
Screen is strong lcd is not, punched the **** out of it one time the glass was fine LCD shattered.
The evo 4g's screen is strong!! I ran my evo over (by accident of course) and the screen DID crack but it worked perfectly fine! The evo will last under all basic drops, bams, and ninks lol!! There isn't a cellphone out today that can last under extreme conditions like being nuked, motor accidents, being fired at upon a firing squad, OF COURSE lol
I wonder if the Gorilla Glass is only on the newer hardware spec models since I don't remember this being mentioned when I bought mine shortly after release. that site quoted also lists the Epic 4G which my wife and daughter have and I notice that theirs also seems to be more reistant to fingerprint smudges, while my OG Evo needs a wipedown after any use at all...

Exactly.
That is why it might behoove somebody like my brother to have a screen protector underneath the screen shield on his case.
PS thanks for the science lesson ;-)
~ I'm a fungi
Sand is actually silica not quartz, some sand is up to 90% calcium from coral skeletons but over time that calcium becomes silica
Edit: BTW silica heated and pressed/rolled = glass that's why sand will tear the hell out of glass its fine rough edged and very hard at that size silica crystals are very hard compared to most minerals not quite as hard as diamond but on the upper middle of the scale

Dropped mine out of my shirt pocket last night like ive done probably a hundred times, only this time the screen cracked. Surprised me because ive dropped from higher up on harder surfaces. Mine survived a lot of beatings without anything
Also only ever got one scratch through it all and my keys were the culprit. Had my Evo for about year
About a month ago I dropped my phone from less then 2ft off the group. Completely shattered the entire screen. Thankfully my Zagg kept all the tiny peices together and it worked without a hitch. 50 bucks later and I had a new replacment in and I did the swap myself. This new glass feels more durable.
It however is *NOT* Gorilla Glass.
I've thrown mine at walls with a thin rubber backing and it's never cracked o.o
Does any one had scratches appearing on the screens glass of the Galaxy Nexus?
, few days back i have noticed one noticeable scratch on the screen , strange as i am treating my Nexus very carefully.
My galaxy S which has the gorilla glass never had scratches and it is now more than 6 months old.
Little bit disappointing as it is very new phone with couple of weeks use. who know if there will be more scratches in the future!! Hope not
Just dropped mine 5ft to the pavement landed face first and the battery cover came off. It's still flawless I don't know how but it is.... I was expecting it to be cracked but I'm pretty impressed!

I have mine in my pocket all the time and it's perfectly fine, not even one scratch.
i used my gn with the screen film still on it for over a week until i got my screen protectors in the mail, no glass screen is unscratchable/unbreakable. there are plenty of substances around that will scratch gorilla glass (eg sand) and if even a tiny bit ends up in your pocket, better have a screen protector!
Yea my original G2x had 2 tiny micro scratches on it. Not noticable unless viewing a white background, more commonly when viewing webpages before they fully load.
The LG Updater bricked mine and got an exchange. Haven't had a problem with my new one but just goes to show.

Wise advice here, but nobody sells screen protectors for the nexus where I am. I've ordered some online and I'll be taking it to a professional to get stuck on (every time I do it I leave bubbles; yes I've watched numerous instructional videos alas I cannot do it) - I've only ordered three protectors, hopefully that is more than enough.
All the screen (even Gorilla) would have chance to get scratches...
always get a screen protector for your couple-hundred phone
Yeah I'm gonna have to get some too. I always take extreme care of my phones (whether in my pocket or out) and it already has a small, yet noticeable scratch on the bottom. Definitely need a ZAGG or the like

I'm tired of hearing people say even gorilla glass will scratch blah blah blah. Gorilla glass has proven to me to be infinitely more scratch proof than the glass on the Nexus. Like 100 fold over. After a while I was treating my Vibrant like it was bullet proof. Throwing it across the room, dropping it scores of times, putting it into my pocket with keys, etc etc... and to this day - "not one scratch on it", not one! For those who think sand in your pocket would scratch gorilla glass, you better think again. Obviously there will be rare occassions where it would happen but for the most part, it'll survive without any issues.
My nexus on the hand has been babied to death and less than a week into owning it, 3 scratches.
I will never, EVER buy a phone without gorilla glass again.
I've been rocking my Incredible since day one without screen protection and it's still mint. (besides a complete crack in upper right corner (in an area that is beyond the display) from one of the worse drops, which was more of a drunken throw). I really hope that the Nexus can handle my lifestyle, but sounds like this thread is reporting mixed reviews. I refuse to wear a condom so I hope I get one of the good ones...
p.s. I surf alot in the summer and sand all over but still no scratches. I guess it has to hit with the right angle and friction???

One grain of sand or salt + friction (i.e. pocket) and even the Gorilla Glass 2 on the RAZR gets scratched.
You can run a key across the screen all day long, but it only take a granule of something to etch a deep scratch.
If u get a decent screen protector and install it well (I know it ain't easy) it will look/feel as good as the naked glass, and then u dont have to worry - and in a year when u pull it off, the glass will be PERFECT. Small price to pay. The Galaxy Nexus is so thin that with a slim TPU case it's still crazy thin, and you will keep it in perfect condition
I agree Gorilla is scratchable but much harder to get scratched than other glass.
Does anyone have suggestion of good screen protector? And from where to get?

I'm sorry to say, but you should have ordered the SGP Flex instead. The Ultra Oleophobic ones don't extend to the edge of the screen, because they use the dry adhesive method, and if they went right to the edge of the curved screen they would peel.
Frankly, it looks pretty ugly having a band around the edge that's not covered. Plus, because they don't extend to the edges, it's much more noticeable if you get it off centre.
As mentioned in the other thread i have a couple of tiny scratches after 3 weeks of use and never ever putting anything else in my pocket with it. Disappointing.

Sand will scratch sand will scratch sand will scratch sand. What do I mean by that? ALL glass (including Gorilla Glass and its differently arranged superficial crystalline structure) is the same molecule- SiO2 or "silica." Is there variation within silica? - yes, but minutely.
[good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness Geology and Mineralogy have huge unrealized relevancy in everyday life- just like under-appreciated physics] The variation will not give silica the hardness of say, "topaz" (at 8 on the scale), but rather is usually due to impurities (additional minerals) that weaken it down to ~ 6 or so. Gorilla Glass seems to be a purified silica, maxing out at 7 hardness. Quartz crystals (what we call "sand") also usually sits at 7 (chemical weathering can both purify and contaminate depending upon the situation), and do not have to be just "sand" like beach/desert sand. Sand is a size classification, you also have "silt" which is just smaller (down to microscopic) quartz crystals, and is "aerial saltating" (airborne- carried by the air but not in solution with it). Many other minerals may be present in the "cloud" that hovers about <50' from the earth's surface due to weathering that will scratch just about anything, so "grit" is a huge issue for ANY screen. Gorilla Glass is nicer than other glass types (although according to the Vickers scale Corning uses, not by much), but it is not invincible and items that can/will scratch are much too common to be flippantly dismissed. Also good reads in these comments: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/mfskn/galaxy_nexus_no_gorilla_glass_no_problem/
Buy a screen protector, even if you have Gorilla Glass...
Just get a high end screen protector like xoskins on there. They fill in scratches. Their video shows it pretty well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoMRO4OiXw4
I've seen a number of threads about the screen scratch issues, but i am struggling to work out the proportion of people suffering from it.
Does your Galaxy Nexus have any screen scratches?
If you don't have a scratched screen and can post to say if you take any special care with it (like keeping it on a pouch, screen protector etc...)
I have 2 deep scratches.
They are the length of the diameter of the circle exposing the front facing camera.
They're probably from sand that I was around when on holiday.
I highly doubt I would have any noticeable scratches if I didn't expose it to sand.
I was going to return it to the store I bought it from and tell them there was something wrong with it so they'd give me a new clean one, but I'm okay with it now and I returned to the UK 3 days after the 28 day return/exchange policy so I couldn't do anything anyway.
Anyone know any way I could easily mask these scratches? They're on the left bezel so they don't interfere with the screen but I'd like to mask them anyway.
No scratch, no screen protector (hate those things).
just put on a cheap ebay screen protector and you'll be set
nothing to make a big fuss about for some scratches when it can be easily prevented with a $2 screen protector
even Gorilla grass gets scratches too
Have you found your screen protector has stayed on correctly? From my past experience they seem to start peeling from the corners.
I really want a Galaxy Nexus, but I know my OCD will really get to me if I get a scratch on the screen.
My phones with Gorilla Glass have never had any scratches whatsoever. This is my third phone too. I carry it either in my pocket or man purse lol

Gorilla glass is still just glass, its not magic, it can be easily scratched by something harder than glass. take a bit of sand and rub it on it and you will have a scratch.
I just got a small gouge in my screen, not even 1mm wide, near the middle some time yesterday. It's more of a chunk, then a scratch. Reminds me of a minor impact. My phone is in a holster, never my pocket. I was working on my car, and may have touched the screen with a less than clean hand that led to the scratch. About 1 week after the phone I got a small scratch near the top of the phone, out of the visible area.
I have a stenheil / sgpstore Oleophobic on the way. i was holding out for a Ultra Crystal by stenheil (best screen protectors ever made hands down IMHO) but it doesn't seem like they're going to make a crystal for the gnex due to the curved screen :-(

anyway no screen protector but got scurve case for it, also have it in my pocket with nothing in it but a micro-fiber cloth because that's just how I roll. Also always leave it face down on a clean surface. (curved screen so screen doesn't touch the surface woohoo!!!!)
No scratches only had mine for a week though, no screen protector and just in a TPC case.

No scratches yet
I've had mine for 2 weeks now. Thankfully, no scratches yet. I was really worried about the glass on the Nexus with some of the forum threads I had come across. I was coming from an OG with Gorilla Glass.
So far, in 2 weeks of use (treated the same way as my OG Droid) I don't see even the slightest of scratches. I also love the oleophobic coating on the glass. It really does.wonders.
In comparison, my OG had a big scratch on the screen in the first 2 weeks of owning it, and it almost got me to switch to a screen protector. Not that it means that the glass on the OG was worse, but rather, that these things are all luck related. I'm sure that over 2 years of use, my SGN will also have scratches, just like my Droid did.
Gorilla glass/ reinforced glass is not magic. If you're unlucky, either can get scratched in a heartbeat, no matter how careful you are with your phone.
No screen protector and I have scratches on my screen.
I have some micro scratches on it from day 1 before i was able to apply a screen protector. Seems like the glass is not as hard as my old iPhone 4 where i used it w/o protector for over a week and it seems fine.

Believe it. My old G2x had 2 scratches on it. Luckily I had it replaced when an update bricked it. First phone with a Gorilla screen and the only phone that got scratches. Sand and dust are destructive on them. Knives and keys... not so much.
This time I put a screen protector on. XO for me... and a case. No chances.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - AOSP KANG
Asus Transformer - 3.2.1 OC/UV
So, are there any methods of masking scratches after they appear?
BUY A SCREEN PROTECTOR!
I woke up today and noticed my first scratch. Its about a quarter of an inch long and is really noticeable on a white screen due to the 'rainbow effect'. I use a nice hard silicone case which has done an amazing job protecting my phone from stupid drops and falls (I've had about 5 ).
I now believe that the tempered glass used with the Galaxy Nexus is NOT as strong as Gorilla Glass. Everyone I know with a Gorilla Glass phone doesn't have a screen protector and has NO scratches whatsoever.
Forgive my rambling. Do yourself a favor and buy a screen protector. I know I will be.
you forgot to add the *this message paid for by screen protector C co. jk haha
but seriously do you know what you did to scratch it? currently I've got an XO and androidified case on mine. But the other day I was at the gym and my nexus fell off an elliptical like machine (twice) the second time one of the feet things smacked it as it was falling (~4.5 ft) and the nexus went flying across the room.
Worse: It didn't have a case on, because I was trying to mod the touchstone tech into my case.
Awesome: picked it up popped the battery in, and it was completely unscathed. I don't understand what people are doing to crack/scratch this thing. It seems pretty solid to me.
I used XO Skins as well. They will fill in that scratch. Their video shows that. I also posted my review of their stuff linked in my signature, as well as about 500+ people on here.
Don't waste your money
Screen proctors are a waste of money, from iphone to droid x and blackberry, never had a scratched screen.
Not to make light of the situation, but I wonder what % of users would try to show a scratch with a screen capture? I'd say a solid 20%.
I got a single scratch too. I've had and used the iPhone 2g since launch and it has not a single scratch, so I am confused as to what I suddenly did differently. I'm sort of annoyed, but whatever =)

You scratched the oleophobic coating... not the glass.
I got a chip,
ordered xo, hopefully it fills it in
Always had a screen protector on my phone, I buy them off ebay (bought about 20 off the same seller, love his screen protectors). It just gives me a sense of mind if my phone falls, which it has. I also have an otterbox commuter (first time buying a case worth more than $10 ). But it has saved my phone.
6 Foot drop out of my friends window smack onto concrete, no scratches
scratch?
do you know what scratched your screen??? I sometimes put my car keys in the same pocket as my gnex (although I try not to) and I have not gotten a scratch yet. I can see dropping the phone resulting in a scratch but even drops won't protect gorilla glass completely.

This is likely the case - especially if you can't 'feel' the scratch with your finger/nail.
no glass is scratch proof just some are more scratch resistance. Gorilla glass will still scratch, my Atrix had a few minor scratches. you notice when they do those demos at the gorilla glass booth they only use metal to try to scratch the screen? if someone tries to tell you that gorilla glass on their phone wont scratch ask them to prove it by rubbing some sand on the screen. Stuff like keys wont scratch your screen because they are relatively soft compared to the glass on your screen but stuff like sand and other glass can scratch a chemically tempered glass screen.
I have a scratch around a centimetre long, I can feel it with my fingernails so I agree it is most likely the coating that is damaged .. any ideas how to repair, cover, remove the damage?
No scratches on any phones EXCEPT my G2x which had Gorilla Glass...
Don't believe everything you hear. Although this round I am sporting an XO SP.
I had a screen protector on since day 1 until a couple days ago when it started getting jacked up in the corners. It's so silky smooth without it on that I don't plan on putting another screen protector on.
This is the first phone with which I've ever had a scratch. I pretty protective with my phones. I don't ever put it in the same pocket as my keys. I'm still not sure what I did that caused the scratch. It scared me into getting a screen protector for the first time. I can still barely see the scratch through it. I got a Ghost Armor.
I bought a screen protector weeks before I even bought the phone (as it wasn't available on the market at the time). I wasn't talking no chances. If they had the glass ones from Spigen available I would certainly upgrade. (too bad they can't make one due too the curved glass)
Gotta have a screen protector
No big scratches yet, but I have noticed some tiny scratches at the bottom where I have laid it down on it's screen from the first few weeks of use. Now I have a screen protector as well as a case.
While waiting for my bodyguardz to arrive(still waiting after 14 days), I went to buy a cheap screen protector even though it ruined the HD of the screen. Totally worth it though
A few hardly noticeable scratches but it still looks better than a screen covered in even the most highly regarded protector.
