On my galaxy nexus when I hit the recent button I know when I swipe that it removes the application from the list but does it end it or just get rid of it from the recent menu

General mixed opinions, but if your worried about RAM, don't be. Android natively handles it better then you can possibly attempt to.

The recent list has absolutely no bearing one way or the other on whether an app is running in the background or not. They are two completely separate and distinct things.

Wrong. Try this, open xda app/hit home/now go to manage apps/running tab/at bottom hit "show cached processes"/and you'll see the xda app in that list/now hit recent button and swipe xda away/hit back/and watch xda disappear from the cached process list.
good day.

Apples and oranges. Cached processes and running background processes are two different things. A cached process is one that is not running, using no CPU or data.
To correctly check whether or not the two are tied merely entails force closing an app and then checking if it is gone from the recents list.
I did attempt to duplicate your observation, but there was no overlap between my recent apps and cached processes.

You know what I don't like? How androids 'Running Apps' screen always says Its using up a bunch of memory but fails to show you all the apps which only total up to about half.
When you swipe an app away, it kills it unless it has a reason to keep it open.
For example, swipe the browser away and it kills it. The last page will have to reload from scratch on launch.
Log in to IMO, then swipe it away and it keeps running. When you re-enter IMO it's exactly where it left off.
At least, that's my perception. Swiping it away tells Android OS that you don't need the app anymore, but it's ultimately up to the app/OS to decide whether or not it will be killed.

Not true at all.
"What specifically happens when you swipe away a recent task is it: (1) kills any background or empty processes of the application (see http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals/processes-and-threads.html#Lifecycle for what this means), and (2) uses the new http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Service.html#onTaskRemoved(android.content.Intent) API to tell any services of the application about the task being removed so it can do whatever it thinks is appropriate.
There are really two major classes of things that run in the background: old processes of previously foreground apps (to speed up task switching), and processes that actively need to run indefinitely because of a service.
The first, background processes, are straight-forward -- they can be kept around, but the system can freely kill them whenever desired to free memory, and doing this basically has no impact on the user experience.
Where things get interesting is with services, which are basically how an application says "hey I need to be kept running in the background to do something." This may be to play some music, to fetch new e-mail, to perform navigation, to download a file, to update an app widget, and on and on. On devices that are tight on memory, it is these application services running that can cause memory pressure that is visible to the user."

Hey everyone I tried doing some searching but these words are pretty common so I couldn't find much.
The problem is that I know that by pressing and holding the menu button I get to the search function but the problem is that it doesn't give me the launch menu like it did on my S2 t989 for example when I held the search key on my S2 t989 a "which app would you like to do this in" menu would come up that would give me direct access to apps like shazam, soundhound, and screencast. Is that feature completely gone or do I have to enable a setting or something for this? I really loved having that menu there.
Also another question about the search function that does come up. It does not seem to be the same full search function from before but only for the web. I used to be able to search the apps that are actually on my phone and launch them through that menu as well. Is that possible anymore or has that been disabled too?
Don't get me wrong I LOVE this phone so much I just miss those couple little things. Thanks!
Thank crapple for the change in search function. If you are rooted go to /system/app and find GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk. renameto remove the __USA part.
Dont know bout the other. Sorry.

Thanks for the quick reply and help. I am rooted and I am actually running FreeGS3 and in my /system/app folder there is only "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" there isn't one with "_USA" on it.
Thats odd. I know that used to work. Maybe im forgetting a step, though I dont think I am.

At some point whatever action you're trying to do you probably checked the "use as default" box and now you don't get the choice. I still get to choose which app I use for most things, not sure how to go back and remove the default though.

you can do it throught Google Gow. just go into Google Now>settings>phone search> and select what you want it to search.
I just loaded a custom ROM but when it asked what app to use it gave me this popup.
Clear default app settings by going to Settings>Applications manager>All
Hi there.
I thought my only issue with the Note 2 was the driver issues some are experiencing. Now that I avoid it by plugging into my Win7 machine, rather than my Vista machine, that problem is no more.
But recently another issue I thought was minor is really starting to aggravate me now. For some reason, ever since Jelly Bean came around (even on my G-Nexus) I have had issues with default apps saving.
For example, when browsing either using Chrome or the stock Internet browser, I select an IMdB link and a pop up window appears asking what default app I would like to address these link types. I select the IMdB app, and ALWAYS.....then a window pops up showing how to clear defaults which I have to hit: OK. So all in all, I have to hit 3 or 4 more buttons after selecting a link.
The next time I select an IMdB link, I have to do the process all over again......meaning Android is not saving my selected default apps. I thought it might be app specific, but this issue is happening with nearly any default I select. It also doesn't have to be a reboot that wipes my choices......it just never remembers. Same with YouTube, and other apps I choose for defaults.....they don't stick.
The only defaults that work are some non-Google/system based app to app default choices. By this I mean, in ES File Explorer, if I select a default video player, image viewer, text viewer, or audio player they stick. Meaning, if I pick an image while in ES, QuickPic automatically opens. A video, MXPlayer opens etc.
The issue only seems to happen with system or google apps, but is consistent. This problem is getting very annoying, and my google searches over the last couple days have yielded me nothing helpful.
My question is this, has anyone seen this before, and if so do they have a possible workaround or solution they could suggest? Thank you much, in advance.
I have the same issue and started a thread for it... I didn't get any answers

Hmmmm. Thats not the news I wanted to hear lol. Ive managed to work around my problem a little by installing Default App Manager Pro and then installing Opera mobile and setting it as default browser app. I get far fewer pop ups and at least the imdb page on Opera is close to the app. As well, if I search something and it goes to a YouTube link it first goes to the browser page but as soon as I touch the video to play it, the YouTube app opens. Not perfect but far better than being asked to set defaults EVERY time I search the internet, then having my defaults ignored and asked again.....and again.

Is using that app the only solution for this?
I got my wife a Note 2 yesterday, and each time we've rebooted it, it forgets what we chose for the default app, going back to the stock launcher, and no longer using SwiftKey by default.
Each and every time... re-selecting the things she wants... Quite aggravating.
I never had this issue on my S3
I'm wondering if you have installed custom roms or mods. If so, have you tried going to recovery manager and running :fix permissions:? My thinking is that maybe it's trying to write to a read only file and failing silently. Thus the next time it reads default apps, there are no defined preferences.
I don't know for sure that's even the case, but it would make sense logically on any system.

Right now, it's happening to be on a brand new vanilla Note 2
Is rooting my phone and nuking the default .apk's the only option to fix this problem?
Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue. Every time I reboot all of my default apps disappear and I have to choose them again. They seem to last for the entire session. Stock rom but rooted.

Same here....6 week old Note 2, not rooted. It is saving virtually no default programs...not the launcher, the browser, not documents. Seems that if there are more than one app that COULD open a file, Note 2 will ask for the preferred app, regardless of whether a default had been previously saved / set or not.
Bummer. I did try using a "Default App Manager", went through the process of setting my selected defaults...made absolutely no difference at all!
Judi
If you are on a custom ROM I do not know what to tell you. If you are on stock each time you install or uninstall an app that will perform an action when you click on something the Note will ask if you want to do it once or always. So if you install a new browser and you click on a link it will ask which browser you want to use. If you then uninstall a browser the next time you click on a link you will be asked again. If you are being asked more than that then there is a problem somewhere. If a factory reset does not work and you are still under warranty I would call and find out if that is something that is covered. I wish I knew off hand which app keeps track of your defaults then you could just clear that app and see if that helps.
This is happening on my stock galaxy s4 for t-mobile.. app defaults are not saving. I think it's a broader problem than just the note 2.
Wondering if anyone has found a solution or made any progress????

While I study for the GRE, I do a lot of switching between OneNote and some other app ( eg dictionary ). Considering the slowness of loading recent apps, it gets a bit annoying considering the number of times I need to switch between the two. Hoping for a way to switch between the two most recent apps without actually going into recent apps.
Can either app work in multi view?
Onenote is for reading so would rather avoid having a split view

You could try MW enabler (Search for it in the play store) It doesn't require root, and it would allow you to take one (or both) of the apps and shrink them down into a bubble, that you could easily open and close and hide. In your situation it might be an option.
There are some limitations due to it not needing root... the 2 biggest are that it has to uninstall and reinstall the app... you will lose whatever you have unless you have it backed up somewhere (wouldn't think its a big deal for a dictionary) and you need to turn OFF auto updating for those apps, because if they update from the play store you will lose the multi window/bubble feature until you re-activate it.
Yeah not sure if I like that option thanks for the info. If it irritates me enough the next few days I will likely reconsider

Didn't know this was possible without root. Awesome! And it removes it from the list of installed apps for you so no fear of auto updates.

Give switchr a try. l set it up in "Flow" mode and use a right side edge trigger. Seems to work well for switching between applications.
Umm just drag your finger down and in from the top right corner of the screen while in app. Then you can minimize it to a bubble or have multiple apps open at once on the screen.
right you can windowize the app... then all apps that are windowed can be iconized by pressing the home key.
I'll have to watch a video on YouTube to see what you're referring to. New to this whole multi window thing

Okay. I have a brand-spanking-new Galaxy Note 7, exchanged at Verizon for my prior IED version. Good news is that I don't have to worry about my battery self-immolating. The bad news is that I'm getting these "Your request has been declined for security reasons" toast messages when I attempt to carry out various and sundry simple tasks, such as clicking on a legitimate link in an email in my Gmail app or tapping on "About Google Play Store" in the Play Store app. Are there some sort of Gestapo security measures added to the 2nd Gen Note 7 that weren't on the 1st? Is there a way to knock these down a peg? This is insane...to the point where I have to find creative ways around the block to get things done (such as copying the address from the link or button in an email and pasting it in a browser). It makes the phone considerably less user-friendly. What a shame. Any feedback or input here? I'd really appreciate it.
Note: I have seen things online for "FRP" when I search for that very quote, but I don't think this has anything to do with a "reset phone."
Thanks so much!
Never heard of something like this before. Solution? Root that *****, slap twrp on top and flash Ketan Rom M2, and unleash your Note 7 to its full potential instead of that stock crap

No, I have no anti-virus installed. This didn't happen with my first, shall I say "more volatile," Note 7, and I simply allowed Android and Google to simply restore the exchange device to precisely the same state (in terms of apps installed, etc.) as the original.

I don't know that it's a browser issue, as I'd also mentioned that it also happened when I tapped "About Google Play." It doesn't even attempt to access a browser. For good measure, though, I did poke around Chrome and didn't find anything that would be helpful there. [emoji20]

update to latest firmware or do a hard reset on your device..

I did. There are only 4 "backups," per se, that I restored: Aqua Mail (configuration), Business Calendar (configuration), Nova Launcher (configuration) and Authenticator Plus (accounts). Aside from that, Android and Google's native "restore apps" function handled the job 100%. It should also be said that performing the exact same procedure and restoring the very same backed-up configurations resulted in a perfectly functional white-battery Note 7 when going to it from my previous Note 4. That's why all of this is so confusing. I didn't do any tinkering. I know some here will probably say "that, right tbereis your first mistake," but I prefer to know I have a functioning device before I decide (or don't) to do any modifications. It might just be that I take it back to Verizon while I can and see if they'll let me swap it for another. Who knows? Ghost in the machine?

I have the AT&T version, no such issues (I know that doesn't help) what I would do as suggested above is wipe the phone and start over as new without installing anything from a restore. It's a pain but this will remove any possibility of carrying something over from your previous Note. I would think it has to be something in the permissions portion of an app, Knox or the O/S that is not registered correctly??
I think I'm going to see if Verizon will swap the unit before I do that, seeing as though I believe I recall seeing the message after a previous factory reset and before any significant restoration had taken place. What I can do on one phone, I can do on another, I guess. I may see if, after powering up straight out of the box, it gives me the same problem, I'll wipe it and restore everything manually, much as that blows. If it still operates the same way, well, I guess that will teach me that not every upgrade is an upgrade.
