[Q] Root without flash? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there any reason that this method of rooting without flashing, from the Verizon GS3 section wouldn't work on our phones?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342

I'd just stick with a method in our thread. Using mods from other threads is a good way to brick your phone.

I rooted through odin, youtube it.

yea i odined cwm then flashed a zip that rooted my phone.. as soon as i rooted i got that nasty custom recovery out of my phone! flashed twrp!!

I was trying to avoid flashing. I've rooted multiple phones and a couple of tablets. Flashing and starting from scratch data and app wise just seems like a big complicated ordeal.

The rooting process just involves downloading a couple files and clicking a button. After you root you can back everything up with titanium backup. Its pretty simple.
It used to be a litte more complicated back in the 2.0 froyo days if that's what your referring to

[Q] Will this rooting method work?

1. Root with Unrevoked3
2. Perform a "nandroid" backup
3. Install Unrevoked Forever
4. Install all Sprint over the air updates for radio, etc <-- Can I do this???
5. Install ClockworkMod and use it to load a 2.2 rooted Rom
Yes, but don't mess with Unrevoked3, it's not a full root. Use Simple Root or just do it manually like a real man using the tutorials.
Rooting will wipe your data if you do it manually, but you can use Unrevoked to do a partial root and then do nandroid or Titanium/MyBackup, just know that you'll still need a full root after that.
Also, you'll just have to flash whatever radios you want using recovery, after you root. It's all done the same way, just flash the zip file. Just watch out when you do radios, they often go through 2-3 automatic reboots during the process. NEVER interrupt the flashing even if you think it's stuck, just wait a few minutes for it to get to your lock screen and be ready.
One thing that bothers me about flashing radios is it seems like it always breaks things from what I'm reading.
Thats why I was thinking about to use unrevoked forever(so I don't have to worry about losing root), and then use the real over the air updates from sprint to update my radios.
Seems safer and more reliable to do radios that way?

Most people just mess up the process. Check the md5 sum and leave the phone alone until you get to the lock screen. Many pull the battery out thinking its going through a boot loop when it really isn't. This bricks it. It is relatively safe.
Yeah, it's usually the user that screws up rather than the software. The OTA is doing the same thing, just initiating from the OS instead of recovery. It's no safer, the radios that you find on the boards are the same files as the OTAs anyway.

Unrevoked3 + Unrevoked Forever is definitely a full root. I basically did what the OP wrote, except I used the pre-rooted stock Froyo update.
OP, you may wish to look at this thread:

And you can get the Superuser zip here:

Gotcha. Thanks guys!
Is there a general rule of thumb with which radio to run?
I'm using the thread below which lists radios and wimax, and I at first assumed the newest is the best, but people complain 2.15.00.07.28 makes their calls choppy, and things like that. Is it safer to go 1 version back, or is there another way to make sure you're getting one that's 110% good to go?

For the record, I guess I could be wrong about Unrevoked 3 + UF. But I was right technically.

[Q] Rooting the EVO - BRICKED

I got an EVO and within 6 hours it was completely bricked. Thankfully i got a brand spanking new one the next day and i dont want to mess up again. I did unrevoked last time and that worked fine, but when i tried to flash a rom it didnt agree. Im looking to get full root and NOT with unrevoked. I did some research and saw a way to push a file in the standard EVO recovery, but those posts were from april-may 2010. I didnt know if there was a more updated method anyone could help me out with.

Read this entire set of instructions.... unrEVOked does work great.... hope this helps...

The best thing you can do when rooting or flashing a new rom is read. And then read a little more. Unrevoked is about the easiest method, and most problems don't stem from just rooting. Same with flashing a rom. There are certain steps involved and missing one can have dire effects That being said, most times the issues can be resolved pretty easily.
mutant posted a great guide! Brush up on flashing and there should really be minimal issues. There are some great roms coming out. Most are super stable!
In my family we have 4 evo's and I rooted all of them with unrevoked with no problems and were all running the Myns Warm TwoPointTwo Roms. Its pretty hard to brick a Android device and if you achieve this feat there's a way to bring it back. All I can say is make sure that you read all the instructions and make sure you have the HBoot drives and you should be good to go. Based on all the other methods of Rooting Unrevoked is by far the easiest method hands down.

My first question is how the hell did you "BRICK" your Evo? They are almost impervious to bricking. I have tried to brick mine and it has always been savable.

I'm guessing it wasn't actually "bricked". I would venture to say that some people run into issues that they don't have the knowledge to get out of and its just easier to get a new phone. I don't know if they have deep pockets and buy new or somehow pull off unrooting or what...

HELP!!!.....Used Treve's app to remove CIQ and think I bricked my phone

HELP!!.....I downloaded and installed Treve's app to remove CIQ
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247108
After I downloaded and installed, I ran the first option of remove CIQ. It said successful and then said please reboot.
When I rebooted, all I get now is the boot screen that says Samsung Galaxy SII and then it just sits there.
Did I brick my phone?
Background info: My phone is rooted but not with a custom rom or kernal or odin. It is completely stock and I rooted using sfhub's method.
You didn't brink it. I would suggest that you go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
download the stock rom and get the pit file for it as well and read up on odin real quick and reflash your phone with this rom to go back to stock. Also the post you linked is for HTC phones not Samsung from what I can see with a quick glance of it. If you want to reroot and remove CIQ I would suggest getting one of the roms from this section that already has CIQ removed from it and not using that app again.
I don't know if you are bricked. But why would you flash something for the HTC phones when you have a Samsung its really not to hard to find what you need you just had to look in our dev section and you would have found your answer there to remove ciq

Sfhub's rooting method is super easy, so easy that people that shouldn't be rooting can now root!
My suggestion is run the .tar file like mentioned above. Once you are back to stock, you might want to read a lot before flashing anything again...
I didn't flash anything previously. I just installed an app and bought the key in the market.
While that forums heading is regarding HTC phones, on page 11 is where the app actually is listed and the description states that it is for all phones including Samsung.
I am able to do volume up and power and get to the Samsung options of factory reset but when I choose this, it pops up asking for password. What would that be or is it just my own lockscreen password?
Edit: Yes my lockscreen password is the password. Did the factory reset and it is still coming up to only the Samsung screen.

Agreed, a good amount these people really shouldn't be flashing anything cause they don't even understand at all what it is they are actually doing. They just hear about it and assume its got to be easy cause they own a pc and can operate windows explorer. I can't tell you how many times people start a thread about if they bricked there phone when 99% of then haven't bricked it at all. which is completely obvious to any one who knows there way around android and get what it its there actually doing to there phone. I feel really bad for the OP and all the others who attempt to flash things without a clue as to whats going on. OP ( which means original poster, aka the guys who started the thread ) you need to search for a stock recovery .tar and run it using odin and you will be fine. Just like the guy above started. Can't figure out odin or aint sure what it is? Use your new best friend www.google.com to find the answer including the one thats already answered in post several times with the same topic name that this one is. nothing is wrong with your phone that can't easily be un done. You will be fine. Pm me if you really can't figure it out amigo
Ok guys, is the purpose here at XDA to help others or just talk down to them and belittle them for not being android guru's?
While I completely and graciously appreciate your advice and help, I am 42 not 15. Also, while I am far from having the extensive knowledge that most of you have, I am not a n00b to all of it and have a pretty good understanding or roms, flashing, etc.
Back to the topic. Again, I did not flash anything. I installed an app. While I agree that I could have found everything needed here in the e4gt forum to remove ICQ (which I did previously but didn't flash), I decided to try the app created by TrevE because it also states that it is for Samsung too, even though it is in the HTC forum and the post topic states HTC.
I installed the app because it also has many additional privacy options, not just CIQ. I did my homework (at least I thought I did) and read everything there and here before doing so. I did not just see something shiny and install it without at least knowing the parameters. Also, since I wasn't flashing anything, I thought installing an app would be safer. If it worked great, if it didn't just uninstall it. Again, since TrevE states that it is also for Samsung, I thought I would be safe.
I guess I will have to do what most of you mentioned and just have to use
[ODIN][STOCK][TAR] SPH-D710.EG30_CL435803_REV05_user.tar.md5
I was just asking for advice if there was another method or something I was overlooking before taking that route.
As always, thank you guys for your help and your advice. Just remember, at some point you were n00bs too Much love and respect to all who contribute, help and teach.........Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Why are you so against using the TAR file? It will get you back up and running and then you can root with the same process that you used the first time.
My apologies for my prior post, we have all been there and done that. I lack sleep right now...
I did the exact same thing the other day and had the exact same results. I ended up flashing a stock kernel with cwm, then flashed a ROM and was able to get it to boot. I didn't wipe when I flashed so I was able to recover all my data. My next step is to use the stock tar, then I'm gonna run the auto root and restore all my data with titanium.

It seems like a lot of work and was I just praying and hoping for a quick fix or something that I may have been overlooking to fix it.........plus I didn't want to loose all my data and go through the headache of spending three hours setting up and reinstalling everything.
Will this increase my Odin count?

The lesson here is to read things before jumping blindly in and phailing up your device.
The only method to remove CIQ from Samsung devices is my noCIQ series of mods (which are included in many custom ROMs).
Lesson learned.......
Even though TrevE said it works for Samsung, it did'nt. I shoulda just did the noCIQ from Konane that I originally downloaded. I was just hoping some of the other privacy issues addressed in TrevE's apk would be in noCIQ.
Great work Konane and thanks for your contributions.

@OP glad you fixed your phone because a bricked phone is no fun. Although I know you may of gotten upset at this statement. I have to agree that too many people root their phones with out even understanding how to repair it if something goes wrong. Not for nothing but my phone cant boot up its wiping caches then trying to flash a new rom. If that dont work then its time to pray...
Like I said glad you fixed it and no disrespect but the statement above especially read a lot before flashing is something more people need to do... IMHO

Newer, Safer Method to Root your phone?

I am new to xdadevelopers and this is my first thread.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried the new method of rooting our device?
Apparently, you can download GalaxyS2RootNew.zip. Unzip the file and install runme.bat.
This is supposed to work on all variants of the Galaxy S 2. You will get ROOT access but this method does not install a new kernel with recovery so you can't install custom ROM's.
Please advise if anyone has heard of this method, has tried it, does it work?
Found it on GalaxyS2Root.com website. Thanks.

I have followed the stickies and have watched videos on how to root the device using ODIN. That method works very well, but you need to back everything up first which requires a Micro SD card. I don't have a Micro SD card at the moment so can't use that method.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried the alternative method on the T989 model. It seems a lot more user friendly, easier, safer and you have no chance of bricking your phone. Thanks for your reply.
You don't need to backup anything but it is recommended in case you screw something up. Probably not going to happen if you don't flash a new rom, and stick to smaller changes like theme, or maybe a new kernel.
I've done odin method and seems pretty foolproof to me. I don't see how it can get less of a change to brick unless some other physical hardware problem intervenes in the process in mid-flash.

Tried it last night on my new T-Mo GS2 (followed the galaxys2root.com instructions), it did not work for me. Plus side is that nothing bad happened to my phone even thought it didn't root successfully.
I have the U.S. based T-mo phone... so not sure if that's different than the phones used in Canada.

I think the Tmobile (T989) and Telus (T989D) version of the phone are the same. Unless you are running version 2.3.6, then the zergrush exploit doesn't work.
Backups are overrated (lol). I never do them and completely ignored it and went ahead and ODIN flashed the recovery and then flashed Juggernaut immediately.
Took me literally 2 minutes to do.

[Q] Root without ROM Upgrade?

Another Sony noob here. Last four phones have all been HTC but the Z1C forced me to jump ship!
All the guides I've looked at include the flashing of a different ROM. Is it possible to get root and recovery with locked bootloader but leaving the existing ROM intact?

Try rooting with Kingroot 4.8.0 (this worked for me)
Then use Replace Kinguser with SuperSu scripts and method (this worked for me).
I then installed XZDual Recovery downloaded from here with no problem (look for the file that reads "Z1C-lockeddualrecovery...)!
That's how I gained root with SuperSU and with Dual Recovery. Then you can flash a ROM for Locked Bootloader without the need to backup your TA and without erasing internal storage so your photos and videos (at least) will remain intact.
P.S. Do this at your own risk. I am not responsible if you mess up with your phone.

If you're on factory stock kk, method described above works great. Takes about 2 minutes and you're done. One thing to note is that Kingroot app will show 'root unavailable' message at first. Just ignore it and click root. I just did it myself. Only thing is that I did take the updates in the popup notifications, but only up to kk firmware .108. Don't take any update after that, or you will be on lp, and rooting is a whole different story.
