adios epic 4g - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

still a huge fan of that phone but i droppd it again and cracked the screen so i figured id upgrade to this monster. ive rooted every phone ive ever had. is this phone different . do you guys for the most part think this phone does fine on its own?. any opnions would be most appreciated. thanks

I rooted only for ad-free and Ti backup and better battery stats. Stock ROM is quite snappy and I don't mind TouchWiz.
I need to play Taps for my faithful Evo4g sold on Friday.

I rooted for unlimited multi windows and to get rid of the sprint blotware.. K can't stand it.. Some may like it
But the phone does well without rooting

[Q] SIII or GN2

I am up for an upgrade tomorrow and I have been tortured with the choice between the S3 and the N2. Currently I have an Epic 4G running the bleeding edge of CM10 nighties.
Here is my dilemma. I remember the days of the Epic not having CM or AOSP support. it was not a fine time bouncing from ROM to ROM trying to avoid the random reboots while keeping the feature I wanted (WiFi tether, new OS, battery life, etc.). Samsung constantly struggling with the fact they had 5 or 6 similar but very different phones to update. Phones that were impaired by low memory and light processors
But the world has changed slightly. Samsung now has 1-2 flagship phones, still different but only in small ways which (should*) make updating them easier. I believe that updates will be better, not great, but better.
The S3 in my mind is limited by a smaller processor and less RAM then the GN2, but I'm not sure without the sources and docs if that matters at all. I thoink that samsung will eventually give the Devs everything they want but not till the S4 is out and I'm not sure how many of them will want to touch the GN2 at that point.
My hands are huge and the size of the GN2 is ideal for me, but then again the S3 is right there also.
Battery life the GN2 wins hands down, from what i have read.
S-PEN I don't know if I would ever use it, to me its much like the physical keyboard. Great to have but not necessary.
Any other insights that you could offer to help my decision making would be appreciated.
the pen isn't just a writing utensil... games are much easier with it (think fruit ninja), the hovering feature works like a mouse (such as in drop down menus that used to just think you clicked on then)
the size also matters. the day 1 of your friends/co-workers gets one an shows it to you will be the first day you start regretting the s3 for the rest of your life (I got mine and now everyone at work thinks their phone is tiny)
they will release the source eventually. sammy isn't known for disliking devs, that'd be verizon. samsung had even been known to hand free phones to the cyanogenmod team and saying "here, get to work"
I have 3 co-workers with the s3 and they all hate it now that they took a 5 minute look at my phone.
and your wrong about the timeframe for our source. the s2 got it as soon as the first update came out...

I have held a N2, but I don't know why folks would want a S3 if they could hold/pocket a N2 as well. Its a faster CPU, bigger screen, more battery plus a nifty tool to use as well.
I am still getting used to my GN2,but as soon as I showed people at work, they went called their carrier on released date for one. They ARE getting one. The more I use it, the more I love it. I came from an Epic 4g and I am amazed at this thing. I loaded the Nook app and sideloaded my books. I no longer use my tablet...lol...
Its like a small paperback book in my hand. I love the emails, note taking, screen, games, etc...etc...etc...I "almost" got the GSIII, but decided to wait for this.
Things I cannot do with this phone, I bike ride to work and it doesn't fit in my stem bag (E4G did). I do not keep it in my vest pocket (rear) since I am afraid of it slipping out. I now stuff it into my bag when I ride and throw my BT headset around my neck. I use my bt headset A LOT more which is fine.
Whenever anyone see it though, they fall in love..lol..I really do like it and am putting it to the test next month when I travel and leave my laptop and tablet at home.
I had the GS3 and while I loved the phone I got rid of it for the GN2. IF you need CM9 or CM10 you may want to go with the GS3 as it may not come to the GN2 due to the processor and source code. The two phones are fairly similar. My GS3 had sucky battery life and I had to use an extended battery with it and run longevity battery saver. I do not need an extended battery with the GN2, It lasts a long time, just as long as my extended battery probably. I love this thing! I only use my s pen to play draw something with.
I own both and after using the Note II for one day the GS III seems small to me...
The GS III is one BAD A$$ phone, don't get me wrong but the Note II kills it in every way!!!
Get the note 2____
Let me see, a bigger screen, a faster processor, a bigger battery. Get the GS3

The sgs3 is not much of an upgrade from the Epic Touch... More like a very minor refresh. If they kept the quad core in the S3 you'd have a question worth asking.
Note2 bought
International note 2 just got first build of cm10 today ....it should not be long until its hits our device on sprint too ...

Oh come on...
Better, faster CPU (architecture, etc)
Higher res screen - 1280x720 (vs 800x480)
Double the memory
Bigger battery
LTE (vs WiMax, debatable)
etc...

Ok, honeymoon's over and I'm falling in love MORE deeply.

To the community -
This device is frikkin' SA-WEEEEEET!
I'm now starting to have this thing truly mastered (Touch Wiz, that is...I came from Motoblur) and the speed of this cpu is truly astonishing.
I LOVE MY GN2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Sent from the hands down best device yet: the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, using XDA Premium. Ahh, the JOY of GREAT DESIGN, hard-, firm-, and soft-ware included!!!)
we all feel ya!
Came from the razr maxx myself. I feel the same way. Truly amazing phone!
Why it's the door on the right always locked?
Amazing phone indeed. I am coming from a One S, and I must say I miss some features from Sense, but Touchwiz ain't bad. I don't need need to root.
Came from Galaxy S3, which is also a great phone, but I like this phone way more. Bigger screen, faster, multi Window etc etc
Came from gs3 then iphone 5 and this phone is sooo amazing. I usually get bored with phones always wanting something better but I haven't had that feeling one time since buying this on release day.
C.S.
came from s2, and just bought it today. .. can't wait to find out what its all about...

I've been a tech and computer junky for most of my 34 years, and this device has wowed me more than anything else I've ever built or purchased.
And to think, we're just getting started with the mobile revolution...
The honeymoon period won't even begin to end for me until something, anything makes this phone feel slow or out of date.

SO this is tmobile gn2 forums. anyone have recommendation on ROMS for the sgh-t889? I LIKE my note 2, but i cant love it unless i can fine tune it with a ROM that will allow me to get rid of the tmo bloat but RETAIN the use of the SPEN. I have tried hyperdroid which i thought was fantastic, uses the resolution of the screen as it should be used (icons, fonts etc) but it rendered my SIM card as "undetected" and disabled the SPEN altogether (which is wierd because Samapps where already loaded)
So, what ROMS are you guys using, what is it lacking or, which one is perfect for tmo sgh-t889?
This is the first phone I've not installed a rom on. Touchwiz has VASTLY improved, imo. I did still root it and uninstall some bloatware, though.

Bloatware. This thing cant't bloat!
Have you modded Multi Window so you can put in any app? That alone is reason to root this device and have a proper version of what Multi Window should do....
But on the whole, Touch Wiz is fine. I like it.
(But the speed, the speed of it, man!)

Jedi Master 8 is the best Rom around. Super fast and stable. Definitely worth a try. When you root, install TWRP recovery and do a nandroid to be safe. You won't be sorry if you flash it right!
Couldn't agree more. Ive owned dozens of phones and tablets dating back to the 90's and I've never loved a device like this. Samsung is freakin magic.
Truly BlaZZing w/ QuadCore AOSP. LoVe It Too!

what will i be missing from stock tmobile 4.1.1 if i switch to jedi x

i upgraded to a tmobile note 2 from a galaxy 2. i've had the phone for 2 weeks and still amazed everyday by the phones battery life.
my galaxy s2 was rooted, tried many roms and stayed with mind trick for a while.
as i find the tmobile note 2 stock 4.1.1 is real solid , will i be even more impressed with jedi master for note 2?
i want to hear from some people who are in the same situation as me, meaning that they went root/rom crazy from old phones/platforms then became conservative with the note 2 being that it performs amazing stock.
i ordered a ps3 controller so i would be rooting anyway but was planning on leaving it stock / patching the apn wifi problem.
i told myself i would try not to touch the note 2. is the juice worth the squeeze stability / bugs wise?
i feel like a recovering alcoholic about to touch a drink again.
thanx

S3 for 2 years?

I have an evo LTE, but I'm telling my wife to get the S3..... she is coming from a rooted OG evo running mik 3.11
My evo LTE can run pretty much anything i throw at it still, I'm sure the S3 is the same.... so for my wife our decision is a s3 for $1 now or wait for the s4 and pay $200. I would think an s3 will still be a decent phone 2 years from now, but was looking for opinions.
If you wife likes the new stuff get the S4 but if she likes her EVO then she will love the S3.
Flaco is correct. If she likes getting new things. She better get the S4. Other than that, the S3 is an excellent phone.

SPRINT GS3 FAQ
Any move away from HTC is a good one. You won't have to deal with a half unlocked bootloader with Samsung. HTC never fully gave the public what they had promised. Plus, every HTC I have ever owned fell apart way too easy. Faulty earpieces, faulty digitizers, misaligned screens, etc.

If she's still running Mik 3.11, then the S3 will seem like a whole new way of life. I had my Evo for 2 /2 years, until this week,s oif THAT phone could last that long, the S3 will be fine
Love my s3 a lot, but the new screen alone has me drooling over the s4.

Can't wait for the S4
I'd probably say that going from the evo to the s3 would be an amazing step up for your wife. I recently dusted off my old evo to give to a friend who cracked his screen and can't believe how jittery and slow it seemed after having my s3 for 9 months now.
I also this that the s4 will not be the flagship that the s3 had been for Samsung. I think it'll take one more iteration before the majority of s3 owners upgrade (when their two years comes up), so that's a huge base of people who most likely won't be using the s4. I personally haven't seen too much to make me want to switch. Most of the stuff I want lie on the software side of things, which we'll get in roms shortly after the s4 is released. So I personally will wait for the s5 (or whatever major phone comes after the s4).

Just remember that in 2 years the S3 will be 3 years old. That is a LOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGG time in the tech world.
I for one know I can live with my phone for another year and a month. That's my next upgrade date. Kinda makes me excited to see what will be coming out next summer. I'm trying to avoid learning about this summer's releases because I don't wanna be tempted. Lol

Unless your wife is a techhead and visits sites like Engadget, Gizmodo, etc. she won't know the difference between a S3 or S4 without putting them side by side. You might want to ask her opinion on the Note 2. My wife went from the EVO to the S3. At the time she said the S3 was too big. Then she saw the Note 2 and said that her S3 was too small!
I plan on using mine for 2 years and then going the Note route because I'm a big guy and am really feeling the whole phablet craze. Love the idea of a tablet phone to carry around.

Images rendering poorly

Images have been rendering poorly ever since the lte switch got flipped in my area (seattle). Was wondering if anyone else was getting image distortions when they are using sprint lte?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it happens on any rom and doesn't happen with 3g or wifi.
My wife's l900 is having the same issue. Wiped system in twrp & flashed new rom & the issue remains.
No issues here. I live about 30 minutes outside of Atlanta, Georgia. I was still using my Evo LTE when I got LTE in my area. Didn't have the problem before the tower upgrade, during or after. Since LTE became live in my area, the entire surrounding area is now fully blanketed in LTE!! I'm finally living Sprint again, have been for about 8 months now. Anyway, where I was going with that is that in none of the LTE areas I go through do I have that issue. Even when in a bad area and my phone switches back to 3G, then back to LTE, or when I switch from Wifi to LTE, I never have that issue. I can confirm this for my Note 2, Evo LTE, and my girlfriend's S3.
Are they still upgrading the towers where you're having this issue? Maybe it's due to work they are currently doing. I know when the tower by my house was getting upgraded, my 3G speeds plummeted to pathetic speeds! Even still, pictures would render fine, just took longer than normal.
Also, I'm assuming you're meaning that even once the picture is done rendering of all looks bad, not just while it's rendering. Correct?

Thanks for asking, I am LOVING it!!! I believe this is my favorite Android phone so far!! Used it for almost a week stock, not even rooted! That's by far the longest I have ever gone without rooting and flashing! Well, the longest I've gone when there was the ability to root anyway. I usually buy phones on launch day, and have to wait a little bit before a root exploit is found. Have to wait MUCH longer for s-off on HTC phones!! This is actually the latest after launch that I have bought a phone since..... I don't even remember really, back in the WinMo days though. I was calling Verizon early in the morning to preorder the Touch, Touch Pro, and then the Touch Pro 2 on the days they became available to preorder. I was really contemplating the S4, but I did something I haven't done in probably 10 years and bought a phone that hadn't JUST been released! Lol. The Note 2 is an amazing phone though, and totally won me over when comparing the two phones side by side! A lot of people say that you don't need a tablet if you have the Note 2, but I still use my Asus Infinity a lot! The Tegra 3 and full HD 10" display is simply amazing for gaming!! Plus, there's a few games optimized for the Tegra 3 and add special effects not available on devices without Tegra 3. GTA series, ShadowGun, Dead Trigger, Need for Speed, etc(I could keep going) are truly awesome on the Infinity! Having an HDMI port built in to the side makes it super easy to hook it up to my 55" Sony LED for an even more amazing experience, and using a PS3 controller to play makes it that much better!! Anyway, enough rambling on. I'm still running the shipped rom now, but I've got root and have TWRP installed so I'll be trying out some different roms in the morning, maybe even tonight if I don't start getting tired soon. Just bone stock though, the Note 2 is truly an INCREDIBLE phone!!!! So incredible that it pulled me out of a 7 or so year streak of nothing but HTC phones!

Amen my good sir. That is exactly how I feel. I have been flashing/tinkering every single smartphone I have since back in the Palm Treo days until this note. Just haven't have the desire yet with this phone. Yes, I'm pretty satisfied after a long list of HTC phones. Not that anything wrong with HTC. I'm not loyal to any brand, just which ever suites my need at the time.

Yes! I'm in Seattle and this has been happening to me for the past few weeks. I thought I was the only one! It seems like I have to turn the phone off for a few minutes and then back on to get the colors and images the way they should be. I haven't hard reset my phone yet, but I'm considering it. I haven't found a permanent fix for this problem yet but it seems like it would be a software problem.
I'm using Go Launcher EX and the stock un-rooted phone.
