[Q] Think of buying a Galaxy W. Some Questions. - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

My S3 died a few days ago. I need a backupphone now.
1.I´m looking for a smaller phone, with the best battery life available. I read mixed things about the Galaxy W´s battery life.
Can you clear things for me?
2. Im worried about the 4gb of storage. Is that an issues for you guys? I have 16g in my S3 and they are always full, with some apps that can´t install to ext-sd
3. I read the call quality is really bad. true?
4. What about ICS? Will it come officially or never?
thanks in advance.

1-as you used the s3, our battery life is going to be different. It takes about 8-9 hrs for the battery to last.
2-yes that is a problem with the W. However, if you have an external sdcard you can swap it with your internal sdcard. I made a how to about it, Go to the developers section and you will find it.
3- No, the calling quality is fine don't worry. Still not as good as the s3, i have tried.
4- No, samsung said that the phone will have no official ics because it is heavy for this phone. But Arco68 made a great cm9 rom which is about to be done.

Do you think its worth it to buy this phone?

yea, i personally love this phone. but it depends on what you like, this phone is not made for hard gaming, normal games run smooth but harder games are laggy. so if you want a gaming phone i don't recommend this one, maybe the S Plus or the S2, they are more stable with games.

but the s3 has a 4.8 screen and a quadcore cpu. I expect batterylife from the I8150 to be a lot better then the S3. Is it? (GSM didn´t test the Galaxy W)

Fella....it's "swings and roundabouts".....
On the one hand you've got the S3 with a battery that has roughly 1 1/2 times the capacity of the W's........
On the other, the S3 has a samoled screen and a quad core CPU that both eat more power than the equivalents built in to the W. So my best guess (and it is only a guess), when everything balances out, I'd be surprised if the battery life of the W was much different to the S3......certainly my wife's S2's battery life is comparable to my W........(S2....battery that sits between the W's and the S3's, dual core CPU and samoled screen)
On a side note, if you do get the W, I'd definitely recommend rooting it and installing cyanogenmod 9 on it.....getting rid of all the pre installed bloatware will certainly help to extend the battery life....
Edit.....if you do go the custom rom route (CM9) you'll find there's an option built into the rom that allows you to swap storage volumes simply by "checking" a box....doesn't get much easier than that....

GPS is a bit slow compared to my Nokia E72. But, then again, E72 is quite well-known among Nokia aficionados as one of the fastest GPS on a smartphone.
The accuracy, however, is great. And when you've acquired GPS lock, it's quite accurate in tracking your movement.

aficionados (pl) : people who like a certain thing; fans.
GPS Lock : the state when a GPS device has finished calculating its relative positional error, and settled on which satellites to use as references. Thus, in this state, the GPS device can use the GPS Satellites' signal to accurately pinpoint its location, even while moving.

Eh? The phone should do that automagically...
But sometimes, the almanac in the phone needs to be resynced with the actual state of the satellites.
Every now and then, use GPS in a wide open space where the sky is widely visible.
You can also force GPS Almanac update using the following app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
(For best results, update the almanac *while* standing in the middle of an unroofed football field.)

[Q] Galaxy W or HTC Desire S

Hi all,
Im in the process of getting a new contract, and I have 2 options, the Galaxy W or HTC desire S, I was going to get the desire S until i saw the W, hwt ado you alll think,
I compared the two and it was a tie on here
http://geekaphone.com/compare/Samsung-GALAXY-W-vs-HTC-Desire-S
Also will the W be getting ICS?
Thanks.
Well from my expwrience with the W (and having a friend with the DesireS) I can say that I'm really satisfied with my purchase.
The phone itself is pretty speedy (and even speedier if you root it and uninstall the Samsung bloatware plus anything that you don't need) and quite nice to held in hand.
As far as I know it won't get the ICS update, at least officially.
But who cares, in CyanogenMod we trust.
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App
I don't yet hava a smartphone and I had the same dilemma...
As far as I can tell the Desire S only advantage is the bigger ram, but the Galaxy W has a newer technology as the blutooth, flash, browser and codecs support.
I will know if my decision was good by the end of the week.
anyway, i couldn't find a batter "bang for the buck" in that price range...
I had a long hard look at both these phones before I ended up buying the Galaxy W.
The Desire S is much more well built, but that made it very heavy.
The screen is better on the W than the DS. It just looks much more crisp.
The glass is also alot smooth on the W, no smudge stays after a quick wipe. I hear it is also Gorilla Glass alternative from Samsung. Very impressed.
The W doesnt have a LED notification light, which is annoying.
The W is much faster in terms of CPU, opening the browser for instance was quicker on the W than the DS, but the DS has a much better UI, Sense is far better than TouchWiz.
Battery life on the W is good once you remove the bloat. I get well over 20hrs, that includes calls and gaming.
The W feels plastic'y but not bad due to how light it is. Like a feather.
There is far more community support for the DS than the W, but as you can see we are growing
All in all, both phones are great, but the extra CPU grunt makes it a winner for the W.
Vyker you I couldn't have described it better. Excellent comparison.

Depends on what you think RAM is?
Yes, it is true to say, "the more the better".
But what does it actually mean to the end user, trying to make a phone call, or play a quick round of a game?
The reality is, 512Mb of RAM on the SGW is more than enough. If used correctly, you should have about 50Mb free at all times, this means that you are using the RAM as intended, to run your phone.
I have on my phone, about 13 applications running all the time, and have 50Mb free. I would rather have only 10-20Mb free, as this means more has been given to make sure my phone runs smoothly.
There are mis-conceptions that "OMFG I only have 20mb left, this phone is ****" are wrong. It doesn't mean you dont have enough. It just means it is being used correctly.
Anyhow, for Gingerbread, 512Mb is perfectly fine to run your phone and your apps. It won't be slow! Don't worry.
You will notice a drop in performance because of CPU clock speed [[email protected] and [email protected]] more than you would because of less RAM. Bear that in mind!
Good Luck!
Answered my question! thank you!

I'd really be grateful if you could explain a bit more what else you've done to acheive this...because I've also rooted and frozen several system apps just as you advised, following the spreadsheet you gave...but I'm getting no significant improvement in battery life(I'm still around 10hrs on moderate usage with Juice Defender). I AM getting a much smoother experience though. I'm still on stock EU ROM KKL3 by the way. Glad for the help

Congratulations
Just to share in high hope I am not alone :
I have been using Juice Defender on my HTC Tattoo until now with my SGW i8150 and decided to stop using it and I noticed a change of the battery life as below :
- It seems that the battery lasts even longer
- I am on Unlimited Data
I have not made any further test n I will soon here
2g11, I'd start by removing Juice defender.
One of the best battery savers in Android is to have no "ongoing notification" apps.
In other words, dont let any app running constantly in your notification bar.
The only apps I have running constantly are message apps [SMS, GMail, WhatsApp] and widgets. Everything is not needed.
Since I moved to GO Launcher EX, and stopped using TouchWiz, I've noticed my battery life got worse. So if you use any other Launcher, switch back to TouchWiz.
Hi guys,
Just did a little experiment and needless to say, the results arent surprising. I unfroze all the bloat, unrooted and tadaaa!!....my SGW back to the 'respectable' battery life I used to have with Juice Defender!! This could mean:
1) With the root access, certain apps just override juice defender and switch on the data link at will...OR
2) I dont have a clue..any ideas guys?
BTW: I emailed JD about my experience..still waiting for response
I'm beginning to think I might have to root, freeze the apps then unroot to get the best performance and battery, but will that work?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App
Why freeze when you can just back them up and uninstall right away?
At the moment I'm rooted and uninstalled all the bloatware plus other things I don't need and I get around 20+ hours of battery life with mid-high usage on mobile data (since AFAIK wireless drains a lot less battery).
I'm not that sure that rooting impacts battery life that much
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App
@banelicious Do you use Juice Defender?
I notice lots of people get good battery life WITHOUT juicedefender. The only decent battery life I've had (20+ hrs) was using JD. Dont know maybe I have a slightly weaker battery but I intend to install the new EU FW (XLA2), root/backup/uninstall bloat then see how the battery lasts (without JD).

The perfect phone has a better than RGBG pentile screen.
I am running Liquid 1.3, Trexcell 3800 battery, and Franco kernel. Getting 5 1/2 hours screen time, about 18 hours total with very heavy use (4g, wifi, no power management, 3d games etc). I love the camera after putting in the high quality mods, it's no standard point and shoot but it's good enough for me!

[Q] What are you currently doing to increase battery life?

We all know our GS2 runs out of Battery at a faster rate than what we would like! I'm just curious, what steps do You take to increase battery life, if any.
-Do you use certain apps?
-Do you enable/disable certain things and certain times?
-Anything, ever the smallest things you do, I would like to know!
I'm just curious to see what different people do to strengthen their battery.

Im running FK23 leaked rooted with stock kernel. I use powersave mode that comes in stock settings app.
I don't limit cpu. I use phone to txt, play games, youtube, facebook, twitter, and instagram and google play store.
I get around 14+ hours usage.
Also, I try to use WIFI whenever I can. I turn off GPS when not needed. I dont use 4G often as 3G is pretty good on FK23.
Lasts me from 7:45AM to 10:27PM as of now on 1%.
Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

I bought a cheap ($10) extended battery and cover, and a cheap ($9) TPU case/ At 14 hours, I still had 61% battery left. I can get a full legitimate day out of it running 2.3's, but I am going to try JB and ICS again and see where it's at.
I run KingKang with the JB tweaks package. I also modified my build.prop for both performance and battery life. Plus I toggle my 3G on only when I need it. If I have a WiFi signal I'll do the same with that. I average 17 hours but sometimes I get more than 24. Inverted apps not only look great, but help with battery too.

I did the same as you until the fk23 leak came out. Calkulin's v3.0 gb is amazing for battery life, smoothness, and functionality. I was never fully satisfied with any of the ics solutions, stock or custom.
Although the fk23 battery life isnt as good as calkulin, I'm still using it as my daily driver bc it's jellybean and cool, the phone runs well and smooth, and battery is good enough for me.
To answer the op's question, I do the following to help extend my battery life:
1. Leave off all data unless I need to use it (3g, 4g, wifi).
2. Turn of autosync and only sync as needed.
3. Remove bloatware and/or freeze any unnecessary apps (use GSM battery and OS monitor to find battery hog apps).
4. Leave off GPS unless needed.
5. Set screen brightness lower.
Here's a link to my FK23 results over in the battery thread in General:

I've only owned this phone since after the ICS update, so never tried any GB ROM.
The ICS ROM I've had the most success with is Re-Calked, but FK23 takes it just a step further for me. I know some people have been reporting issues with FK23, but for me it has been rock solid and has been my DD for nearly a week now.
Blu Kuban also did well with battery life, but it is a little over-customized for my liking. I also had some stability issues with BK. I used sleshpics M'ICS build for a while too ... again, over customized for my liking. Good performance and relatively stable. Also, I have never been able to get 4G speeds on any other ROM/kernel like I'm seeing now.
If I'm in an area with a strong cellular signal, I can get over 24h with 3h+ screen time both on and off WiFi. If the cell signal is week, I burn from 5-7%/h so maybe 15-16h if I was there all day ... but that would obv. improve if I threw it into airplane mode.
I have frozen all of the bloatware apps, don't have Google Now activated. Other than that, I allow syncing to occur per default. I don't have FB app installed.
I use auto-brightness most of the time, and I have a dark wallpaper.
dim screen. stay on wifi. that is all.
Honestly, getting use to a dimmed screen made a HUGE difference!!
Is there ever a time when its better to not be on WiFi, of a WiFi is available?

Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

Having battery issues?

My battery never gave me any issues until now after flashing CM9, With CM9 the phone was flat by 5/6pm and thats with auto sync off and hardly any use at all, I got fed up with that and went back to stock however exact same thing is happening, Its now 6pm and my phones turned off after being on for 11 hours, In that 11 hours I checked Twitter 10 mins, and email a couple of times but nothing major, it was in my pocket, auto sync is off, no push emails etc.
Any ideas on what this issue is? Does the battery need calibrated again? If so how do I do this?

To calibrate, you just let your phone drain until off, wait 5 minutes for the battery to cool down, try turn it on, and if it can be turned on, wait again until it ran out of juice.
While off, charge it for 2-3 hours, but don't unplug. Boot into CWM, erase Battery Stats, boot. Then unplug.
But, honestly, I think your battery is giving up the ghost; prepare to buy a new one.

Yeah, I had issues with my battery too...coincidentally, not long after I'd flashed CM9. However I doubt it's got anything to do with CM9 as if it did, everybody on this forum would be having issues. I tried everything you have....wiping battery stats (several times), reverting back to stock etc etc etc ........
none of it helped...
Got to the stage that from FULLY charged, I could send one text and the phone would switch off.....
Got a replacement battery in the end. Went to Amazon and got an (allegedly) 1700mA battery for £5.....doesn't last any longer than the stock battery, but for £5 I ain't complaining...lol.

That's one of those "gold" batteries isn't it?....
Did some research on the "gold" brand and saw enough negative comments to make me think twice... shame really

Ummm, no... This particular battery is properly larger, necessitating a replacement back cover, and users who have purchased the batteries all seem to be very satisfied with the resulting performance.

Right my battery seems to have sorted itself out today, Yesterday I let the phone go until it turned off, charged it over night taking it off the charger at 7am, today I checked twitter and email a few times, made a couple of calls, its now 5pm and battery is at 80%, So its back to the way it was before I started messing about with CM9, Think i'll just stay on stock now
how would you judge this guys?

How the .... do you manage that?
I'm lucky if I get eight hours....
And can somebody PLEASE tell me what the hell MEDIA SERVER is and how I can get rid of it/freeze it....
Sent from my CM10 powered Wonder with Tapatalk 2......it's all good......
yup!
just moderate use on my W..
a little of messaging, calling, playing zombies and wifi, etc..
and i end up with that..what do you think?hehe..lol..
i wonder how your battery managed to go up after falling that way? did you use it while charger is plugged?
media server huh? well, let's put it this way..media server serves as the server of your phone's media such as camera, music, etc..
based on your screenies, bet your using heavily on your medias..
-salute!
Yeah that rise at the end of the graph was when the phone was charging...and if media server is used during watching videos....well I have 20 full length movies stored on my SD card....

i see..
well, there goes it..
watching movie on our wonder really sucks juice dramatically..
i, for one, 1 movie watching on my phone sucks 20-30%, not bad, as my battery really good for now..
when you use camera, video, calls, music, messaging, bluetooth, etc..i think your using phone's media..
experts on this matter will further enlighten and correct us..and i am not one..lol!
however, i am on cm9b4, while your in cm10..
tis the reason why i stick on cm9..
-salute!
I'm not an expert, but i had that problem with the media server draining battery. After some investigation i found that the media server is used always when you are using media content (duh!) such as video, mp3 whatever.
in my case the process was running and drain battery even when i was not using media, after some search i found that could be caused by some corrupt media on the sd card, no necessarily damage but the phone thinks it is. I wiped my sd card, reboot, put the media on the card again, reboot and the problem stop.
but this was my case, i don't know if it applys to you. Let the experts say something about it.

[SOLVED] Question regarding LG True HD (P936)

Greetings.
I was planning on buy the phone up there in the title, but I have a few questions:
1. I've read statements saying that you both can and can't use P930's Rom's on it. Would it be possible or not?
2. In most screenshots I've seen, the 4G / LTE icon is chilling on the status bar. Is it an always on (even if you don't have it) kind of thing, or can you turn the radio off at will? My current service doesn't have LTE nor do I plan to get it in any nearby future.
Thanks in advance to all who reply.

I have the bell optimus 4g lte from bell but its technically a p930. I can tell you that this phone can be set to use lte if available, or fall back to 3g if necessary, or just use 3g, or use 2g as well I believe.
From my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have to port a p930 rom; I believe its as simple as dragging a few folders from one ROM to another to get it to work, so long as someone has made a port of cm to work off for your device which I think they have. If possible, push for the p930 though, and try to get one with GB, and not updated to stock ICS or you'll have to unbrick to load ROMs (at least on the p930) as it locks the bootloader.

First off, thank you for the very quick reply.
Very good news that you can turn off the LTE, should allow for some battery saving. Sadly I live in Portugal, where it was already hard enough to find a shop with this version. The P930 is completely off the map in these lands.
If I do end up buying it, I'll spend a good week just soaking up info on it before I actually try any flashing shenanigans and even if I can't it's not that big a deal (coming from a Xperia Live With Walkman, 1.0Ghz single core with 512 ram. Even unoptimized this should feel like a Ferrari compared to it).
My only issues were the LTE radio, which will be turned off all the time, and the battery life itself (which I forgot to ask about). For somone who doesn't game, and will use the mobile for rare calls, most SMS's and emails, and the occasional 1h sessions of websurfing or video viewing, what battery duration would I get?

i have a telus version p935 and on the box it says p935 but i opened the phone to replace a digitizer before and every part in the phone that has a tag says p930, pretty sure it's just the box that says p935.
i may be wrong but i have never had a problem flashing any rom that says p930
i also used a digitizer that was made for p930 and it works flawlessly

Yep I believe 930 and 935 are nearly identicle if not 100% ....most ROMs will day for p93x meaning they work for either version. As far as battery life that will vary greatly depending on the ROM, settings, and kind of use. You should get a minimum of ten hours of medium use (roughly two hours of screen on time) Here's my usage for today. Keep in mind I use the device as WiFi only so airplane mode and WiFi have been on the whole time.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
All the P93x Versions are the same. You have to differentiate only with SU... I have a P936 myself and have had no problems with flashing P930 Cyanogenmod and all recommendations for P930 apply to the P936.
My recommendation is: Take a RC from CM 10.1 (currently no stable version exists) and flash the latest Wind Kernel (has to be for CM 10.1). I have around 26 hours of battery life (I turn on airplane mode when I go to sleep). I turned on airplane mode when it was fully charged. 6 hours later it was still at 100%. That is a big difference compared to CM 10.1 before the RCs. I haven't tested the battery life of the new RCs (3-4) but i heard they improved a lot. My Usage can be compared to yours: I surf the web like 2 hours a day, have push e-mail turned on (from 2 exchange servers) synchronize with my yahoo web mail account and gmail. I don't have any energy save app installed and i don't think it is necessary when you go with wind kernel.
Hope this helps!
Many thanks for the input bumbum.droid, that puts me much more at ease. I'll have a final search to see if I can still find a LG 4X HD anywhere and if not I'll go for this one.
Thanks everyone for the answers.
I've a p936 in PT the only thing you need to worry about is which baseband the ROM you are installing has.
You can get 4G/LTE from Vodafone in some locations, the battery will suffer a bit.
Also take into consideration most ROMs available are either from US region or Asia, and with those you will have bad reception, to fix that there is a thread around with all the basebands available, just flash the German one, since all 3g and 4g frequencies are the same within Europe you will be OK.
Regarding battery, get used to charge your phone every day or every two days if you have low screen usage, personally the best battery I got was from LG liquid nitro v7 with wind kernel, and got me around 3h-4h of screen on time

Can anyone share baseband files from V20 ROM P936?
I'm currently parted from my normal PC, when I get it back I can share them with you, it will take about 7 days though
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well, ended up getting lucky and did found a LG 4X for about €20 more than the P936, which ended up as the better option.
Still, and once again, many thanks for all who took their time to answer.
Is the 4x Better? Just curious what's better screen and processor wise
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
Main differences between the two are a slightly bigger screen (from 4.5 to 4.7, but same resolution), 16GB internal, Quad-Core 1.5Ghz A9 with Tegra 3, and a bit more battery life with 2150mHa.
Here's a comparison between them
The main difference between 4X and P936 is absence of LTE in first, and also simple IPS display instead of much more better AH-IPS in P936. The 2150 mAh battery doesn't really helps Quad-Core Tegra3 to last longer, but SoC is indeed somewhat faster in benches. But the screen difference is much more perceptible than benchmark scores
