Dear XDA members,
I recently bought a HTC One X from Expansys Japan which say on the website that the phone is 'sim-free' i.e. factory unlocked. When I received the phone, the seal was broken and on the first startup the phone didn't ask for initial setup. The language was Chinese which I changed to English, then I tried to update the software which got downloaded (on Wi-Fi) but the software couldn't be installed and gave an error that the phone as running a modified software and I need to return to original (snapshot below).

I then found that the phone has been rooted and the software version and the ROM is something with "OneX.G2 by Cason" written at the end. It seems that they unlocked the One X and send it to me. Now that I haven't yet got any reply from them regarding this fraud, is there any way I can get the software update for this phone?
Can I return the phone to factory setting without loosing the unlock and can use on my carrier after the software update? Or if I reset the phone then it will get locked to its previous carrier and I might not be able to use it without unlocking again??
Thank you in advance.
You were sold used goods as new. The warranty is void. Not much else to be said.
Look in the development section, there are guides you could follow to relock the bootloader and install stock recovery, which will allow you to receive HTC's OTA updates. You can always re-unlock the bootloader using HTCDev.com.
That being said, since your warranty is already void because the bootloader has been unlocked, you should consider finding a custom ROM and kernel that suits your needs, since they'll usually be (much) faster and power-efficient than the stock ROM.

Tried to unlock my phone from unlockriver.com (I did it before). However, I am on unlocked firmware and I was expecting an unlock code. However, instead I just got instructions telling me how to use the T-Mobile unlock app. I paid $45 for instructions on how to use something that will not work considering I have not had the phone long enough.

EDIT: To even use the T-Mobile unlock app I will need to revert back to T-Mobile firmware and then use the app. The device T-Mobile variant shouldn't even be listed on their site as it is just a scam.

Remember: * if we can’t unlock your phone, you will get your money back.
get your money back. there is no need to unlock the HTC sim card I'm pretty sure. if your trying to get unlocked bootloader go here http://htcdev.com/ if your trying to get s-off also go here http://theroot.ninja/
Isn't there a law (at least in the US) that carriers have to unlock their phones for free so long as there isn't any payment due on the device?
It seems verizon has locked down the boot loader pretty good, signed up at HTC DEV and the "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" command tells me I need to turn off the OEM Lock, I've been reading lots of old threads with no success, I've tried using Two Different Versions of RumRunner and am coming up with errors, tried using sunshine as well, no luck, I need to root the phone to use it with my new carrier. I've posted photos of the errors I am running into, also if there is a different work around for S-OFF and Root On Verizon M9 that I am unaware of I would like to know. Did you read the list of supported models before trying to use rumrunner? It isn't and never was compatible with this phone. http://rumrunner.us/downloads-2/
The same question applies to your usage of sunshine. The Verizon M9 isn't supported if it got updated to android N/firmware 4.x. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q8GKXw3EDVGtAoiu36MdeVqMPRJba1WlF5TZXKQgNgA/htmlview
I'd suggest you to check the compatibility of files/methods you want to use before you actually use them. In the mentioned cases you didn't cause any damages but you need to be aware that flashing incompatible files/using incompatible methods always equals a risk of turning your phone into a paperweight.
You may want to take a look at the Verizon M9 forums since you're currently in the forums of the international version. There you should find a thread with java card/xtc clip owners. They may be able to help you out.

Hello guys, I am a new member but I have been browsing XDA for years now, but I need serious help at this moment. I bought an HTC One M9, flashed twrp, rooted it and installed a custom ROM, the problem begins when I noticed that Wi-Fi and bluetooth were not working at all, even trying to connect to a different wifi or wifi hotspot with and without security, there was nothing that could make the wifi work, so I decided to go back to stock BUT (I know this is really noob and I regret it) I did not make a back up of the official firmware, so I had a really hard time searching for solutions so I finally decided to get it S-OFF, it worked and then I tried to flash Nougat firmware from download mode and something went wrong, because after the flashing, I went back to bootloader mode and then try to go back again to download mode and the blue screen appeared, rebooting my phone into bootloader, I tried flashing twrp again (new and old versions) but I could not manage to get it into recovery mode either, so that's it! I am stuck in Bootloader, I cant go to download mode or recovery mode, so I need a solution and good guidance, what are my options? do not tell me please that I can use it as a paperweight now...please guys! I will appreciate any help.

Hi:
I flashed a Samsung phone a few years ago so I am a little familiar on how to do this. I have had my LG G5 LS992 Sprint (DEMO) phone for about 2.5 year and just recently it started getting hot (sometimes) for some unknown reason... it is not the battery. I performed a factory reset and no change. So before I trash the phone for a hardware failure I thought it best to flash the OS and see if that fixes it.
I have tried every LG Flash utility I can find and they all fail. The LG Mobile Support Tool (LGMST) gives this error message:

Is this truly why I cannot flash the phone using any flash tool? I`m not looking for an upgrade, just a re-load of the latest firmware that I have. During flash attempts the phone is in Firmware Update mode, developer options are enabled, Enable OEM unlock is enabled and USB debugging is on. USB communications is set to MTP. It is running Android 7.0 Kernel 3.18.31 Software version LS992ZVF. Again, this is a "DEMO" phone if that makes a difference.
IN the LGMST if I choose the option of "Upgrade Recovery" the LGMST actually downloads a firmware image but fails when it tries to load it to the phone. It seems the phone has a built in flash-block by any method other than OTA. The phone is not active with any carrier so the OTA Firmware load method is not an option.
If anyone has insights as to what is going on I would sure like to know what they are. If I have to trash the phone I will.
Thanks,
Tom

Before I start using it I’d like to be able to make it so I can back it up with Titanium or Helium backup, which need root, and TWRP for full partitions, which needs a bootloader unlock. However, I don’t want to leave it rooted or leave the bootloader unlocked. What’s the best way to go about setting up the phone to do this?
If I relock the bootloader, does this delete all user data?
Is it okay to relock the bootloader with TWRP installed or will it bootloop?
Even if this is okay, when I unlock the bootloader again then it will delete all user data won’t it?
And for rooting, I can follow the steps for using Magisk, but is it possible to leave it disabled most of the time (i.e. to allow banking and other similar apps to work)?
Magisk also means OS updates need to be done manually doesn’t it? So would I need to leave the bootloader unlocked?
Basically, I don’t want to start using my phone immediately without doing what I can to set up these things so I can use them in future, because I know that to set it all up in future will require a factory reset for which I’d actually want to have Titanium/Helium backup in the first place!
Thanks for your patience with my probably dumb questions!
Cheers
I didn't unlock/root mine : no time anymore to fix things I break xD
But all I can tell you is unlocking (and probabely relocking) does wipe everything on the device, so unlocking to then relock seems pointless.
On the other hand, I don't think it is that of a security issue to have an unlocked bootloader, as long as you keep your hands on the device... (root is another story I think)
Thanks @matmutant thank you that's helpful confirmation.
