I asked LG Mobile about Bootloader lock in Korea. - LG Optimus G (International)

First, I'm VERY VERY sorry for my poor english.
I asked twice, and they give me answer.
-----------------------omitted--------------------------------
Bootloader lock
(Authenticity & Integrity Check)
(Google Movie Service는 LG 의 선택사항이 아닌 Android 강제 요구사항임)
Bootloader Unlock

^ It's Korean.
So I try translate. (Because I'm kind. Sorry.)
------------------------------------------------
The reason why it has Bootloader lock is the same as next.
-> We have to satisfy 'Widevine Robustness Rule' from 'Android ICS' for supply 'Google Movie Service' , and It has to guarantee that 'code(software image)' didn't fabricated or altered. (Authenticity & Integrity Check)
('Google Movie Service' is not LG's choice, but Android's forced request.)
The reason why some manufacturer supply Bootloader unlock is
-> Although they don't supply 'contents service' ,
they allow to users to download and use 'Custom ROM'.
However, It must to be prepared 'technical solution', and also 'relevant service provider' must allow it,
so there are lots of cases where other manufacturers support 'unlock' only some model.
Please be understanding.
We are sorry for cannot give the satisfactory answer.
---------------trite phrase------------------
.... I cannot understand even though I'm Korean.:silly: So I'm not sure the translation is correct.
What is 'Google Movie Service' ?
and.. We want to use Custom Rom, amazingly ignorant LG!
But I love my Optimus G Because I'm a slave of 30months contract.

Basically, all phones running ICS or higher must come with a locked bootloader in order to be certified by Google and get access to the Play Store. This is because of the DRM used for Google's Play Movies, even if that service is not available in your region. I believe that even on Nexus devices unlocking your bootloader will wipe your DRM keys and prevent access to Play Movies, Music and any other applications that are using Google's DRM.
By unlocking your bootloader you are permanently preventing access to one of the phone's original features with no way to get it back. This is why carriers are not keen to allow users to do it, and why a rom such as CM10 has its own Apollo music player rather than Google's music player.

CM doesnt even use the chrome as default browser.
Not just a DRM, Google completely restricted using their apps in the CM.
Thats why it comes without any Google apps by default, even the Market

^^great informative post, sir.

While perhaps if a user unlocks them, the drm could be messed up, however, samsung ships their bootloaders unlocked, so this excuse is not valid. On samsung devices, those apps still work.

As has already been pointed out, Samsung devices default are unlocked and do work with DRM on touchwiz roms, so while DRM may be a contributing issue to locking of bootloaders, its not really a solid one as Samsung has somehow found a way to make it work.

Thanks for informations, friends.
So, the problem is lazy LG, right?

Not sure. Ask them. Give them the Samsung example and see what they say. I'm curious.

[Q] Google Play After "un" Root

I had a Galaxy S Fascinate (Verizon) - after I rooted it, I discovered I could not rent movies from the Android Market. I "un" rooted it, (return to stock) - and found I was still unable to rent movies because it still considered the to be rooted.
Now I have a Galaxy Nexus - I would love to Root it and try some ROMs, but want to avoid this issue.
Has anyone successfully returned their Galaxy Nexus to Stock, and rented movies from the Android Market (Play)
thanks,
gw
I know how to fix this since i've been in a situation the other way around (wanted to get us possibilities in market from europe)
Clear cache, appdata and forceclose the following apps from settings/apps/all apps:
Download manager
Google account manager
Google services framework
Network location
Package installer
Google play store
Then reboot your phone, open play store and accept the terms and conditions again. Now Google will re-pinpoint your device location based on your sim-cards company and your position in the network. Good luck!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
An easier method is using OTA Root Keeper to temporarily unroot your phone. It should work for renting movies.
The question that I have is does anyone know where if you rent a movie and download it for viewing offline what directory it is stored in on internal memory or the file extension?
Thanks,
Ok I finally figured out where it is stored. So I temp unrooted my phone made purchase and then selected download for offline viewing. So in the directory there is a file
application_4jSa8szMNjs.wvm
so i brought my root back to get into that directory then where i was stumped i figured it would be wmv mp4 3gp or whatever with drm protection but no its wvm I have never heard of wvm. so anyways I moved the wvm file to a different directly. Temporarily unrooted my phone . Then went into the google play movie app and it said that the download was missing. so i know I have the proper file. Now my question is does anyone here know anything about a .wvm file ?
What are you trying to do with it? if you're trying to keep it beyond the rental period or copy it off the phone then this probably applies to any answer you would find useful:

[Q] HTC one X in China - how to get the google play store

Hi!
I'll try to explain me as best as possible here about the 2 main issues I have with my One X.
I'm living in Shanghai, and I've bought it here, however, because of the stupid issues between Google and China, my One X doesn't have the Google play store.
I tried to dowmload it, and it doesn't launch, after a second or 2, I'm back to the main screen of my phone.
I contacted HTC, and they basically told me to use the Hiapk market, but it's extremely limited, and some apps won't work. For ex: downloading Foursquare through this parallel market is ok, but when it comes to the install, it would just tell me that the app can't be installed...
I asked HTC if it's possible to overcome these restrictions, as I'm french, and would certainly go back to France someday... Had no answer... As for foursquare, HTC told me to contact foursquare directly.
So, I would like to know if it is possible to change the OS of the phone to put one from anywhere else in the world where the play store is not factory censored, and if that would for example solve the foursquare issue (or any possible issue that I might have with other apps).
Sorry if I'm not using the good terms, but I just switched from IOS to android 3 weeks ago...
The warranty would certainly be void, but I'm up taking the risk as I can't use the phone for more than 2/3 games... I feel like I've just made an expensive mistake...
Thanks in advance for your help!
You can root it and install a custom rom on it that will give you access to the play store.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
How could I do that ? what does root exactly means ?
I'm new to android, and I'm not sure about what I should do. Did few research but I'm not sure about what I should pick and install on it.
I'm not looking for anything fancy, just the same OS but with the possibility to have the play store, I don't really want to overclock or change it at all levels.
Thanks for the answer!
Rooting is like "administrator" access on a PC, if that makes sense. You can install a custom ROM that looks like what you have now but with extra features. I think if you go in the development section there are a few threads you can look at that will help you root and install a custom ROM so you can access the play store. Goodluck
Will definitely give it a shot
Thanks for your help!
If you are rooted you can simply install the 'market enabler' app

use a VPN
qtableau,
(and others behind the #@$!%* Great FireWall)
i live in SH as well,
Do yourself a really big favor! Get a VPN!
Rooted phones do nothing for websites that are blocked (which come and go).
A rooted phone is not a solution to blocked websites
&
Market Enabler, although a great app, can not be used to unblock websites, it merely tells the Android Market/Google play store you are using a different service provider so you can download apps not available in your country (to bypass the “This item is not compatible with your device” MSG) IE my China Unicom Device is displayed as "AT&T HTC Desire" in the play store
AND because almost every non-Chinese website in the world has a facebook, twitter, and a Google+ feed/rss button/, every time a non Chinese page loads the #@$!%* Great FireWall needs time to check it out before it loads, so without a vpn surfing on a mobile can be horrible.
I use a VPN service provided by 12vpn, you can use it with multiple computers and mobile devices simultaneously. It will change your life. I have it on 4 desktops, a laptop, an iphone and android phone.
And you can use it to access online content that is not available outside certain countries ie: i can access the online TV website hulu.com which is only available to US residents.
one caveat: you CAN'T use it on a computer that has a running a torrent program though...which sucks! You have to close the program before you can run the vpn but just on (i pretty sure this a 12vpn policy, other providers should let u use a torrent program simultaneously)`
Costs about 400RMB a year but freedom is PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!
Disclosure: I am 4 year customer of 12vpn.com and have no other interests/connections to the company
IMHO Chinese censorship is mostly a BUSINESS decision. Same as any governmental organization that requires a certain amount of local programming on TV or radio (FCC, CRTC,oxfam etc)
Hi! I was wondering if you found a solution? I have the exact same problem. I recently bought a Galaxy S3 and found out i cant access google play or any of the google apps. i downloaded the APK files and tried to install it, but they don't open at all. I'd love to hear how you solved (and hope you di!)

I found a solution by paying a bit more...
I gave up on trying to read all the tutorials on how to root phones and went to an electronic market in SH (where I live, if you do, go to xujiahui to do so)
For a hundred RMB, I got it changed to a hongkong OS, where everything is allowed and works great. Some updates not even available on the official one in China went with it. Hope it helps and that you'll be able to find a market near your place.
Basically, my advice for some other people reading this thread: Don't buy it in a real shop, go to a market, they're half the price, and already flashed to a "working" version... wish I'd known that
Play Store also don´t work with VPN cause the issue isn´t connection kind but factory blocked. So I wil go also the way to get my OS changed. Guess there´s a big risk of abortive flash so is there any possibility of orig. OS back up to be flashed back if any inconvience happen?
Pls help me
Hi, I do have the exact same problem with my Note2. I bought it in store in Beijing.
And now I'm stuck coz there's nothing more I could do without the Play Store.
How did you find the market? And What did you tell them?
Most of the chinese here cannot understand English so how can we tell them?
Please help me out with this.
Thank you.
download orbot.apk(requires root to fully function) or hotspotshield.apk look for them on google (how ironic), use them only when using market(they slow down the internet to some extent, but act as a proxy on your phone)

Hi, do you know if you made something else to your phone? i know that this S3 version from UNICOM uses a different modem that wont allow us to install anyother Samsung build and i was wondering about if in the WHOLE world there was another country that used the same modem so i can install that build in my China/unicom phone. If this is a transparent solution I AM SOOOO DOING IT!

Hello guys!
If you have this kind of issues then the only thing you need to do is:
- Download FASTBOOT files, Google it, it should be 3 files. The size small. Make your own folder called "Android" on C: Drive. Put the files there.
- Unlock the Boot loader, go to your respective forums and find a way to unlock your device's Boot loader.
- Get ClockWorkMod recovery for your device, Google it, go to their website, search for newest version for your device, download.
- Put the .img file onto the "Android" folder.
- Enter Boot loader mode (For HTC it's POWER + Volume Down). Navigate using physical buttons, and Select FASTBOOT option.
- Flash it with CMD on Windows by using this command:
--- cd c:\Android
--- fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery_you_downloaded.img
--- fastboot erase cache
- Done all that, search for a custom ROM that's already pre-ROOTed and has built-in Kernel to avoid troubles like boot loops.
- Put that ROM onto your SD card, DO NOT EXTRACT THE ZIP.
- Enter Recovery by going into Boot loader mode
- Full Wipe/Factory Reset your phone through Recovery, then erase Cache through Recovery too.
- "Install zip from SD" card through Recovery, select the ROM.zip, select YES. Now wait.
- Voila, Democracy speaks for itself ;D
Thank me if i helped!

[Q] Is 'Droid working strictly for us (and not for Google) possible?

Hi, guys!
Before I pose my question: I am really in awe of projects in the Open Source community style and this is soooooo good to see and experience (my other hobby is Sat TV "hacking" and so on... )!!!!!!!!!! :good: So, endless thanx and respect(!!!!) to all involved!!!!!!!!!!
Context: recently I managed to S-OFF my HTC Desire with 'Droid 2.2.2, then somehow I rooted it, 4EXT recovery/backup (if memory serves, the "touch" one) is in, in recovery mode I flashed the latest MIUI ROM (sorry if I misspelled it) with JB 4.1.2, improved the "radio" and so on... The one or two things that do not work - that I noticed - was no sending SMSs and poor video recording and reproduction. So, the search is continuing!
My question is - before I attempt the flashing of Paranoid Android ROM (how fitting, regarding my question! ) - is there a ROM that has kicked the living daylights out of Google corporate c*a#, please? As in, there is no stuff, in that would-be ROM, that constantly collects our data and sends it back to corporate and other commercial coders, please?
Because, as a matter of principle, we ought not to have to think of just how much data is going to corporation(s) and individuals coding apps etc. And from then on, to "authorities", of course. Not that I have anything to fear, in that respect - but it is the principle that is at stake here! Similar with Linux v. MacroHard and their "enlightened" attitude towards our privacy etc.
You know, we have a myriad of apps of all sorts, so I suppose we do not need Google's intrusion in all aspects of our interaction. I am perfectly happy, for instance, to use Firefox or Maxthon or Opera browser and get into my emails that way, not having to use the Google app for Gmail! I presume we could also have other apps to replace Google chat (presumably through Firefox in Gmail?) and so on and so forth. Really, I do not need Google's maps, when we have Open Street app and so on and on and on.
So, does this ROM exist, please? No Google/corporate/commercial stuff in it, that is...
And if not, has the time arrived? It is Linux, after all...
Would it be possible to make something like that?
Many thanx, again!
P.S. I recently bought a SuperPad tablet and I wonder if there are custom built ROMs/OSs for those, as well? Anyone knows, please?
Well of course any Rom without the Google apps.
Your principles on data collection went out the window when you first used the internet.
I disagree... respectfully, of course...
For instance, see BBC website for the "right to be forgotten" EU proposal on data collection/storage/handling... However, no such battle can ever be completely lost or won - they keep going on...
As a newby I have a problem with posting links but... let me try:
Code:
bbc co uk / news / technology-16677370
My Q was also re. full functionality without Google stuff - some ROM authors warn that their ROMs can't function properly unless we flash the Google stuff immediately after ROM itself... Any clarification, please?

its not to do with they cant function properly (they can) its just the fact that play store is "google" and u also need a gmail account. correct me if im wrong. Soo like dethrat says,.... its about gapps. (more or less).
It's not a matter of me thinking this is/you're wrong (on this one). I think/hope, that you are also hoping that I am right... Am I right?
You have a point, in a way, since it started in this manner with credit cards (easily done but also easily circumvented) and onwards but...
Look, ever tried Flipboard? I mean, if you are neglecting the examples I already wrote about... Check it and compare with Google Currents, please... Simply flipboard dot com... Need I say more?
On the level of principles: we do not need to be tethered/electronically tagged and under constant "surveillance" by Google or any other corporation or even the state, for that matter... Don't you think this is kinda worth at least trying? No offence intended to anyone(!) but I think this is the adult thing to do...
Well, this is what I am looking forward to nowadays... So, do you think that, for instance, a developer of Paranoid Android could make it all work with "alternative" apps, please? An effective "Ads Blocker" and kinda "No Script" apps included, of course. Maybe even - in this sense - "cleaned up" crucial apps, too... If "Anonymous" were really serious and competent (intellectually, professionally and morally), maybe they should get on it right away, eh?
I mean, if I ever requested anything from anyone on these boards, this would be it - an AIO OS without corporate [email protected]#. And I have a feeling that a fair few of us might keep trying this sort of thing out...:good:
Code:
bbc dot co dot uk / news / science-environment-21923360
Any more info on my question, please? Anyone with some experience?
Cheers!
So, the great WoH tells me that it is possible to use his ROM without the G-stuff, that is "Gapps" - and that everything should work just fine! And I am very grateful for this possibility! I only need to "skip the step with the gapps", he says.
Then, one proceeds with "3rd party app stores" like Amazon, GetJar, Fireplace and Yandex.Store. I presume there is an included browser in the ROM without the Gapps, so I start it and go to one of those sites, get their gadget and simply install from there, the free stuff... hopefully not having to log in with my Gmail account...
My problem, though, lies here in this thread - setting up PDroid. That's for seriously enhanced privacy/security! In the thread's "how to" there seem to be some discrepancies with the newer versions of PDroid... Really not sure how to do it, what exactly must be done, with which files... And I can't post in that section, to ask questions... Like "Where is the apk you mention in the top post?" and "What exactly are the steps?"
So, I must prepare by reading a lot, testing it and then redoing it, from scratch, i.e. flash the ROM again, as WoH described in his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131790
My hope would be that he includes the PDroid patch/apps - if at all possible - in the next edition of his awesome ROM!
Also, I would dearly love to see and test a ROM with all the best alternative apps, links to a few of the best 3rd party apps stores, tools etc. - but no G-c#@p (or almost no G-c#@p)... at least as much as humanly possible...
Here is a sketch:
3rd party apps stores,
keyboard and speech apps,
a couple of browsers (Firefox/Opera, maybe),
a few tools to manage the phone and set it up properly (Advanced Task Killer, Android Manager and alike),
best audio-visually capable Gtalk app and Skype for chat,
some non-demanding but good protection (Avast suite?),
Flipboard for news,
Adobe Reader, Kindle and Aldiko for reading,
MX and Meridian players for multimedia stuff,
Flash,
camera and videocam apps(?),
audio, video and photo editing SW,
Sopcast (TV channels) and "1Channel for Google" for audio-video streaming from the net,
...and so on,,, everybody continuing to fill it up according to their preferences, of course... all freeware/gratis!!!
Perhaps call it an "Alternative apps pack"???
So, maybe: when apps2sd card tool has been installed, we flash the "Alternative apps pack"... and it all goes to an SD card?
I think this might be a very cool idea, for many of us...
Go WoH and co.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :good:

Medical app not compatible - is it potentially achievable for me to get it to work?

Hi,
I use continuous glucose monitoring to monitor my blood sugar, as I am a type 1 diabetic. The CGM I use uses Bluetooth to sync with an app (Medtronic's Guardian Connect app) and gives blood sugar data, safety alerts etc., but this app is only compatible with selected Android phones, which doesn't include any Oneplus phones. I really like the Oneplus 7t so I would rather not sell it if possible, so I was thinking of trying to make it compatible with the Oneplus and removing the phone model block. This has been done before with a different medical manufacturer's CGM app ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7t/help/medical-app-compatibility-t4015519 ), so I think it should be possible. Given my lack of programming ability, I was wondering if there are resources anywhere that might help with learning how to do this? Obviously they're not going to tell me "This is how you make this specific app work", but I'm just hoping to find some general resources on this type of coding. I have searched around with no success as I am not sure where to look. I gather it would take more than simply changing the buildprop file to trick the app into thinking it's a compatible phone.
Thanks.
Would help to know the app and what issues you're having. Is it not showing up in the play store? Does it give an error?

Sorry, not sure how I managed to omit all those details. The app is Guardian Connect (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.medtronic.diabetes.guardianconnect&hl=en). I am able to download it, but when I open it it says "incompatible with your device", as it's only officially compatible with a limited subsection of Android phones (https://guardianconnect.medtronic-diabetes-mena.com/en_gb/app-compatibility). However, the Dexcom app that I linked in the first post also has limited compatibility, yet people have managed to get it to work with other android phones, so I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be possible for me to do the same.
I can't link URLs properly yet as I'm a new user, so I had to add those spaces in the links.

Hello. Just wanted to inform you that I inserted the working links on your behalf (at least I assumed so).
I hope you'll find a solution for the issue soon.

Thanks for that
I have diabetes and want to use this app for checking my blood glucose level continiously on my oneplus 8pro phone but the app says its not compatible with the device. I don't know how to solve this problem.
Is there anybody who can help us with this?
Have you you guys tried to email the developer of the app to fix this?

Yep, they weren't helpful at all though, unfortunately - they just gave a generic "keep an eye on the compatible device list" response. In the end I gave up and sold a Oneplus and got a Samsung.
Hi!
I just had contact with medtronic Belgium and they said; the more people call us the more 'problem cases' go to the IT'ers in America. So they mean how faster the problem will be solved so just give them a call

https://apkpure.com/developer/Medtronic%2C%20Inc.
Here is the list of all Medtronic's apps. Download the APK, then select the file from your Downloads folder in the Files app.
You may be prompted about the app being from an unknown source or risk to your device. Ignore the warning, tap OK, yes, or allow if prompted.
Hope this helps and as the post above already said I would consider calling Medtronic customer service and asking them to make the app available to all phones.

Was actually hoping for a work around to use on phones that are not on the compatible list, i.e. for the app to not check for phone compatibility before starting.

I second this; rooted OnePlus 8 Pro running an A12 custom ROM
Personally I've actually come pretty close and was able to hide both Root and Developer Options from being detected using XPrivacyLua, but was unable to get MagiskProps working properly to get around the final "Your Phone is Incompatible" by spoofing as a Google Pixel (one of the primary "approved" devices) message, even after trying multiple older APKs combined with clearing data/cache

Thanks.
Actually the logic behind limiting the compatible devices boggles my mind because, other than replicating the screen of the insulin pump and sending data downloaded from the pump to health care providers, the app does not allow pump to accept commands from external devices. So I do not see what the concern is with allowing more devices to use the app...

There is no logic, just retarded medical industry bureaucracy BS.
I've contacted customer support multiple times and asked them the same question, only to get the same useless response of pretending to "pass on my feedback".
It's actually one of the reasons I wanna find out how to work around the problem even more; like who needs them to take proper control of a medical device that I own.
Would also be amazing to get a Wear OS app that displays the same or similar information to the app, but I don't see that being made by Medtronic for at least a decade.

Hi! Im struggling with getting this app working on my rooted xiaomi. Do you remember how exactly did you bypass those checks with xprivacylua?

Can I use banking apps on LineageOS with Magisk?

Hi. Apologies for the noob question. Is it possible to get banking apps, PayPal etc to work on lineage ? I've installed magisk but don't know how to configure it, even if it will do what I need. Is there a guide somewhere? Thanks.

First of all, you will harm the security of your transactions if you wanted to use banking apps on a rooted phone.
Secondly, if such a banking app will work on a phone with root hidden by magisk, I would advise you to give up such an app or bank for the reason I mentioned in the first sentence.

Why.... precisely? Beyond the generic rubber-stamp warning that rooted/custom ROM devices lack the security of stock builds, what data do you have that proves that running banking apps on phones with root/custom ROMs is likely to result in theft of my money?

Generally speaking, this is how money can be stolen at the very least, but also more, since identity verification can also be done with bank accounts.
Do not combine "rooted" with "custom", as there is no close relationship.
Oh... I see. Thank you. I have no need for root to be honest. I just need to be running Lineage OS. Is that safe to use unrooted?

Root does not increase the level of safety. It's good for you to use the original LineageOS, if it exists for your phone, and not use TWRP. It's likely that the bank's app won't object.
Just started to using LineageOS official last release from there website ((lineage-19.1-20230302-nightly-pioneer-signed)) . i have there mindtegapps for google integration. the problem is my carrier money transfer app crashs and doesn't starts. before i changed to LineageOS. this app was working on my phone original rom. is there any thing i can do to try to fix it? like crash logs or something i can try? i tried Google Carrier Services and Android System WebView. but nothing changed. it still crashs. is there away i can know which is the last supprted OS for that app? i mean they could just have not updated there app to newest google framework. idk for sure i am just guessing.
the app name " Orange Cash "
PC is rooted by default. People use banking sites and programs on PCs.
Phone will require same steps to prevent money steal.
Generally it is not the rooted phone by itself is source of trouble but user actions.
If user installs shady autocraticker from google play and give permissions to it thief would not need root to steal money.
To send a link by email or messanger and ask to enters credit card information thief does not need root permissions.
Criminals don't expect phone to be rooted. They pray on inattentive users.
It is often possible to have control of your own device with root and use banking.
Some banks allow to use browser instead of app.
Bank usually would call on the phone to accept login and transactions for additional security.
Decision depends on how much money user has on banking account, and how careful he is.

That's why there are no PC banking applications/programs.
Using banking applications increases the security of transactions, which using only a web browser does not.
Thanks to apps, banks have the ability to continuously improve security on phones that have stopped getting security patches from the phone manufacturer. The use of push technology makes banking apps a cheap token.
The banks' action on this issue is beneficial to customers.

What are you talking about? Rooting means *the user* has control over the device, vs the manufacturer. Not giving the user root privileges is all about the manufacturing retaining control over what you do with the device, and being able to push its bloatware on you, and nothing to do with security.
HOW exactly does giving the user root access damage security in any way?
I'm gonna go ahead and say that not only having root access does NOT threaten security, but the other way around, it improves it, as I can remove all the unsafe apps the manufacturer bundled with my phone.
You are wrong, you were asked to back up your claims, and you did not actually do so.

Read the "Payment Services Directive 2", analyze, understand and acknowledge.
The XDA forum is for discussion, not for answering every question asked. That's what google is for, for example.
Yes, just use magisk delta.

Why should I care about a European regulation, considering I'm not in Europe, and my bank is not European?
Regardless, said spec doesn't really give ANY justification either as to *why* a rooted phone would actually be unsafer in any way.
You didn't say "Because a stupid spec says so", you said "because of security concerns", of which there aren't any.
