[Q] HOW: to use kernel (Franco) and ROM (P.A 2.54) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So i've installed P.A rom and Franco's kernel. Ive seen alot of beautiful homescreens and honestly i envy them. A new jellybean user like me isn't familiar on how to customize a hybrid ROM. Im sure that i miss alot of things that only PRO users or should i say experienced user can do a good customization. So in other words, im asking for your help guys. I really want to use all the features correctly or exactly how it works.
About the kernel (Franco's), it is my first time to install a custom kernel on my devices. So i really don't know how it works, i mean ive been experiencing battery issues so i decided to make a move and fix things on my own but unluckily i can't. I heard that this kernel can really save battery if it is use properly and thats the problem. I dont know how to use it
IN SHORT, im willing to learn things about android i know its hard but ill try. Maybe a little kindness and patience from you guys can help.
Maybe a start up guide for NEWBIES will do (

[Q] Question about Rooting and installing a ROM..

My name is Andy. I have had the EVO for about a month, and think it is time to start messing around with it a little more, so being I have never done anything like this, I had a few questions so I fully understand whats going on so I can fix it if I mess something up haha....sorry if they are noob questions haha I'm just trying to learn...
Ok, so I have been doing much research on rooting and rom'ing my eVo. I already have it rooted, with unrevoked3. I read somewhere that unrevoked3 isn't a complete root...is this true? and if so how to I do a complete root so I can use the ROM that is mentioned below...?
Now the NooB question of "What ROM is best?"
***I know it is more a personal opinion, and what features you want bla bla, but what ROM has proven to work the best with the EVO (aka removing programs that aren't needed/battery life/speed/UI runs smooth and also looks good...ect.)?
I was looking on a post about the BakedSnack 1.7 ROM. Does anybody have any input on this ROM...Likes or Dislikes? I Like a lot of the things this ROM sais it has/does, so thats why im trying that one but am I getting the BETA 9.7? And does it have many bugs?
And, in this thread, it talks about all the different Kernals you can get. I was wondering, will the processor in the eVo support the 1.267GHz overclock?
Different opinion
Ok, once again, it is all personal preference, but i like Ava froyo v8. It is extremely fast, a day and a half of battery, and on the modified Rosie, app drawer is where the phone used to be. Once again, preference.
About unrevoked, 3.2.1 gives you full root but doesn't give you engineering boot. Anything earlier than 3.2.1 only gives you half root. You if you only have half root, use unrevoked forever or just use 3.2.1. Ask me if you have any more questions as i would be glad to help you.
Thanks for the input.
Couple things I noticed...
This ROM comes with 3 different types of keyboards, but how do you use them? I've checked them, but cant seem to figure out how to use them in a text or what not. Any help?
There is a box to check to change the notitification bar, but it doesn't seem to change anything around when I reboot. Also when I check or uncheck, it askes me if I would like to reboot and if I click yes, it doesn't actually do anything.
I have noticed that when I check the box that is to "Show compass in Maps", it wont stay selected....??
Any help would be awesome!!
Thanks

[Q] Rooting and Rom For A Beginner

Hey guys I am a serious beginner to the android world. I just upgraded to the Nexus from a Blackberry. I am looking to root and add a rom to get the best performance from my phone. I have looked at a lot of threads and websites but because of my newness to this world, some of the instructions are not clear to me. I have a Mac and just want some step by step instructions that I can understand so I won't do anything wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I will offer my opinion and you can do with it what you will.
First off I have no information about how, specifically, you root with a Mac.
Secondly, my advice is think hard about why you want root. I started rooting back with my HTC EVO and it was pretty cool - until the problems started. When I say problems, I should probably say bugs. I tried several roms and most were pretty good but all had their shortcomings, random reboots, force closes, etc. I finally ended up with Cyanogenmod (arguably the best rom out there) but even then I had problems. No autofocus in in video, no HDMI out and something else I can't put my finger on now - but really annoyed me.
In short, rooting is kind of a give and take between fun stuff and more bugs - IF you are using custom roms which most everyone does. The factory roms are written by the guys who make the phones and the custom roms are written by guys who are reverse-engineering the hardware/software so expect some problems. (Cyanogenmod even had a list of things that didn't work on their webpage). The Nexus is stock AOSP so the roms may be better but there is still the issue of custom kernels, radios, etc. If you don't get it JUST RIGHT you can have compatibility and stability problems.
My Nexus is still stock and is waiting for the official 4.0.4 OTA (over the air) update. It runs much more stable than my EVO with Cyanogenmod (or any other rom). If you want the best performance and don't NEED any of the functionality of root I'd personally just keep it stock. I've thought about rooting again, but ultimately I don't really need it. My friend switched from iOS to Android and rooted but kept having reboot issues on a couple roms and ultimately restored to stock and was fine. Same story with another friend who is currently (read: STILL) using a gen1 Droid.
Don't get me wrong, rooting is great - if you will really use it. But I wouldn't root just for the hell of it unless you don't mind the hassles.
YMMV
Good luck!

This is good info but... There are other reasons to root a device other than just running custom ROMS such as the ability to use Titanium Backup (for backing up your apps / device), AD Free (for getting rid of ad's in free apps) along with other great apps that you can only use when your device is rooted.
I am running a custom ROM and you are correct, I have / had some bugs with it so in this case for a NOOB the OP may be best to stay stock for the time being but there are other reasons to root.
OP - All I can say is READ, READ, READ and the READ SOMEMORE... Good luck and welcome to ANDROID!!!
As a fellow noob/semi noob I can highly recommend using youtube instead of text guides if available. There are a surprising amount of video guides that are alot easier to follow..
For me the posibility to do full and partial backups of my phone is the main reason i rooted.

Right. He mentioned rooting for performance so I assumed he meant he wanted to use a custom rom/kernel/radio. I rooted mostly for roms (HTC Sense, sigh) and tethering but titanium backup was awesome (although less useful if you don't switch roms every week lol). Adfree was alright but I don't notice much of a difference. Overclocking was fun, too - but except for benchmark scores I didn't notice much of a difference either.
If I root again it will be stock ASOP and only for tethering --- but only if I can find a 100% stock rom with just the carrier-tethering-tracker file removed.

+1!
Youtube videos are much nicer than written guides. Just watch and follow along step-by-step seeing how everything is supposed to go.
I actually made a how to video for the nexus s 4g on a Mac. And did it the same way on my galaxy nexus. Only thing u would have to do different is make sure u type in the right clockwormod recovery image but here's the video.

You couldn't really pick an easier phone to root, I would do a lot of reading before having at it though. I was able to find a guide fairly quickly by doing a google search. I would link it but apparently I'm still a noob myself.
root causes random reboots?
LOL
I found this method to be the easiest, at least for me.
I was in the same situation a couple weeks ago, didn't know a thing about rooting but now I'm flashing custom roms and testing kernels
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352413
good luck and have fun
Firstly, just use the device. Get used to Android before trying everything else. For all you know it might do exactly what you want it to without rooting.
If, after a week or 2 of using it, you want to explore rooting then read the rooting guides available online or in the Dev forum. Then give some ROMs a try! Better to find out for yourself which work for you than asking for a recommendation as what works for one user might be **** for another.
Also, learn how to use adb and fastboot as they'll come in handy in future (not enough people have any idea what to do). Try and do things manually as opposed to using one-click tools so you have the confidence to know what you're doing

The stock rom is probably what you want to stay on for stability. if you want really cool customization and tweaks go with a custom rom, but remember if you are on a custom rom you cant take OTA updates from google.
I know that, but I think also about, is it really possible, that maybe 10 people can make a better Rom? Google has many employees which working on this for long time. Sorry my english isnt perfect, I hope you understand what I mean.

You have to remember that the majority of people probably dont want a phone which they can customise in any which way that they want. Google need to cater for the masses and create an OS that is at least relatively simple.
Individuals on forums such as these however, feel differently and love the chance for customization. The developers working on after market ROMS create those options and customizations for people that really want them. And their ROMS are based on the source code provided by Google and their many employees - so nothing is lost in that sense.
This is what I think any way!

Are they all "better"? No. Do they offer more features/customization? Yes. Do these features/customization often break something that already works? Yes.

Sometimes it's only one "dev" kanging code.
Regardless, we have some VERY talented devs here. And it's not like they are creating android from scratch, they are using the code that Google has open sourced, so all of the custom roms are essentially STOCK + unique features not part of AOSP. This also makes them not as stable as stock android, pick your poison
That was a good answer !
Thats where is my point, di
oes it really make sense...all time Full-Wipe...backup..flash gapps...then something doesnt work..
but on the other side it looks awesome ! Its just, what do they really change ? Is it stil safe for me as user ?
Taptalked by GNex
I think custom roms can often be more stable because bugs are constantly found and fixed on a daily basis. A stock rom may have a bug but will take months for the next update from google.
Also custom roms are just stock roms with additions, so its the same code base anyway.
its mostly about the tweaks that Google didn't put in .. all roms are the same to me since they all base off 4.0.x unless someone builds a sense or Touchwiz rom.
The only thing that makes roms different is the feature list and kernel

It's all very easy once you do it a few times. Customization is awesome. Like the full screen mod getting rid of the softkeys so anything that your doing (game, videos, etc) that keeps the softkeys there, will now be full screen without the softkeys. Just little things like that plus much more than make custom roms better than stock.

Bugs are constantly found for custom ROMs because they've not been tested so much compared to stock before they are being released. (Not saying that stock is bug free but each official version has gone through aggressive testing)
If stability and security are your top concerns then stay stock - this is a no-brainer. Custom ROMs are for people who are more adventurous and want to have more fun with their phones.
So there are more people on Stock or on Custom Roms ? I heard that many people say its a "developer phone", but on the other Hand people say they bought it because they dont want to flash anymore C-Roms.

Of course there are way more people on stock than rom flashers. People like my mom got the phone to use it, not to flash ROMs.
When people said 'it's a developer phone', it doesn't mean the phone is not suitable for daily use or only developers know how to use it. On the contrary, it's a phone that showcases how the latest OS SHOULD look and feel like. It serves as a reference point to how developers should design their apps.
Good answer !
I read a lot of problems like massive battery drain or FCs etc. etc. also I read about speed improvements and great battery life. I can change already a lot of things with a different Launcher.

The thing with all product discussion forums is, people will only post/seeking help if they ran into problems. (Will you go to a Samsung forum and start a thread with 'my TV/camera is working as intended?' ) So these forums are always filled with error reports/complaints. Sometimes it's hard to see if it's really error by design or just the unlucky few with defective devices.
XDA makes it even more complicated because this is a modding community. Half of the complaints are probably just human errors - bad flash, wrong radio, incompatible apps the list goes on...
Long answer short, you DON'T have to mod your phone to reap all its benefits. You are not missing out things if you don't want to customize it.
I completly agree, thats why I also started this thread. I was talking with some people about it. Its nice to customize, but do i need these small things with the possibility to get issues
Are you on Stock ?

Brother man its all about what you want and love. I could nit would not run stock. I have way more fun with custom roms. But to each there own. I must say, I would never have my mother run a custom from. First I would be her tech support, next its not what she needs. But you keep having fun with what you need / do.

I was actually talking about bugs in stock. Its much quicker to fix them in custom roms since the fix will be rolled out in a few days, but we'd be waiting months to get the same fix from google in an update.
Sure new bugs from custom roms may appear too from the new additions. But its still all the stock code base anyway...
ROMs are usually the result of tweaking, prodding, removal to enhance the phone's ability to function. Some things aren't necessary, and some things can be made to cater to a specific user. Obviously, google cannot cater to individual needs, but that's why so many ROMs exist, you can found out what you like and stick to it!
That's why I switched to android from my iPhone 4s. I love messing with my phone, and android is the platform that encourages this

[Q] I need in depth real help figuring this out

So to start I have Fibromyalgia and as a result I have trouble understanding and doing some things. I have the epic 4g touch and recently it was running horribly, so I thought about restoring it and trading it in at best buy mobile, well even doing that I don't have enough money for a new phone so f*ck them.
So now my phone is restored, stock, unrooted and I need someone to help me figure out what rom to use because I need to theme it because the stock UI makes me want to vomit. I can't quite explain what I need or want all I know is I've previously tried just about everything and everything had some sort of a problem but it's been months so I don't know if anything new will do what I want or not. I just can't figure it out and need someone with patience and time to help me go step by step figuring out what to do.
I appreciate your help immensely.
The guy who will walk you thru it step by step is qbking77 and his YouTube videos. He also covers a lot of different roms in his videos. I suggest starting there and then asking questions once you decide on a rom.

What are you looking for in general? GB, ICS or JB? TW themed or AOSP/CM based? Toss out some ideas of what you're looking for theme and function wise and ill help you find something that fits you, even tho it might not happen on the first try cuz you may find something in the rom that bugs you or doesn't work that doesn't affect me.

ok, I hate ICS prefer G no idea what JB is...... Don't know about theme based.... all I know is I use LauncherPro and I have my wallpapers for background and widgetlocker lockscreen. I really wish I could manage MIUI to work because that's the only ICS I don't mind because you can do so much but it just refuses to work on my phone. I also can't OTA update my phone for ANYthing, even with it fully stock and unrooted it gets not even half way then stops and shows a triangle with ! I'm actually thinking of just selling this damn thing and going for the III because a friend has one and it's much prettier so I won't feel the need to go crazy changing things. I just don't have it in me to deal with such a vast phone. Give me too much rope and I'll just hang myself with it. I tried Calkulin ROM last time and it worked for a bit until everything was just ****, freezing rebooting not getting calls.... I just want a phone to do what I want it to!!! I tried starburst and it did nothing, haven't tried miui in awhile.... never had any luck with Cyanogenmod whatsoever. I don't understand how phones all made the same way can be so different and temperamental like people? wtf is the point of buying a specific phone if your friends does this awesome thing but you have the exact same phone and you can't!!!!

JB is jelly bean android 4.1.x the newest build. ICS has come a long way on this phone since the ff18 ota. Cm9 is really stable now that its on beta1. For TW themed I'd suggest blu kuban as it seems to be a forum favorite. I personally prefer aisle/cm based roms. I run aokp or paranoid android for the customization, theme manager makes changing the look as simple as installing an app, selecting it in themes and rebooting. from the symptoms you're describing with your issues and loading new roms seem to be from "dirty" flashing, not fully wiping in recovery before flashing the rom.

When flashing a new rom, make sure you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache(under advanced menu in cwm) otherwise the issues you described pop up, Force closes, random reboots, lagging, freezing etc. Also make sure to use a "safe" recovery, there are several choices but I prefer el26+cwm5 or twrp.

ya I always do proper wiping and all that, I got my phone restored to where it was so of course back to all the problems I was having. I'm hoping I can just sell the phone and have someone else deal with it.

(Q) LSpeed on CM13 settings?

I have searched up and down for proper settings for kernel apps I usually run cm13 based ROMs even though I found wolly GPE to work nice without any tweaks but I like how CM is set up and feels a lot more smoother but one problem is my scrolling tends to hang and I play an online game religiously (fun run 2) and it seems to be more laggy while running CM, I'm pretty good with Linux computer wise and I'm just coming around to android development I enjoy what you guys do a lot of aspects are similar but there's a lot that's different as well. Anyways enough rambling. If anyone could tell me the best ROM and Kernel to fit my preference or even give me a link (I've read a lot already) I'd highly appreciate it.
I'm S-ON CM13 (not any CM based ) by the way not sure if that may be hanging me up also... Forgot to ask is busy box a must or is it just something to run certain apps ?
Also I'm not stuck on just L Speed if there's another Kernel tweaker someone could recommend I'd be more than glad to test it out!
