[Q] Quadrant on task650 vs serenity 1.2 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I want to get task aokp installed with KT kernel on my gs3, but it feels slow, and when I do quadrant test in it im getting ~3500 on task650&KT and I'm getting around 5000 on serenity&KT. Anyone else experience this?? Coming from a gnex, I really wanna get a aosp rom on my gs3, not liking TW too much.
Thanks

I have never run Quadrant scores, but I am fairly certain most devs don't treat it as a useful measure of performance. But as for having your ROM performing at its maximum potential, try a full wipe and reflashing the ROM and GAPPS. I have been on the same ROM with zero problems after always full wiping.

I always do a full wipe when I install new ROMs, anyone here getting good quadrant with task&KT??

You do know that quadrants don't measure the speed of ROMs accurately right? You're basically looking at a number picked at random basically. I haven't heard any reports of the system being slow in the time that we've had the thread. Pretty much the opposite. So I'm not quite sure what's going on on your end.

I used to run it and it was buttery smooth and fast. Quadrant scores don't really measure the speed of the rom like Task said. KT+Task AOKP was a great combo for me, not sure what's up with your device :S

[Q] Opinions: best sense rom/kernels for battery?

hey guys im sure you get these a lot.
anyway, Ive been running CM6 for awhile now but found out my hometown has 4G coverage now and where i go to school will get 4G in about a month, so I have to make the switch to sense for obvious reasons. Im not huge on performance because frankly i'm not looking to blow minds with benchmarks on quadrant, the phone is fast as **** no matter what so im looking for the best battery life. a must for me is that they keep the theme relatively stock as well, some people arent graphically inclined no offense...
also looking for a good stable kernel with good battery life.
currently running burnt droid with baked kernel #6. heard fresh was good on battery but i think his site, geekfor.me, is down, can someone confirm this?
thanks a lot for your opinions
I don't have 4G here, so I can't say for sure how much 4G affects the battery on this rom, however I've been using Ava-FroyoV10. I do know that the 4G works. I have used it once while I was traveling through a few towns that did have it.
Besides 4G, I do use my phone pretty averagely. In my opinion anyway. I'm usually constantly texting, checking up on eBay using their app, having it plugged into the radio in my car for music, or reading up on engadget. Using Wifi or 3G were applicable. My phone lasts from, about... 8:30AM to around 9 or 10PM. I get a good day's use out of it with Ava-FroyoV10.
I don't use any kernel. I did used to have Netarchy's, however the Ava's stock kernel feels better with the phone. You do not get to adjust your CPU Voltage with the stock kernel.
Your best bet is to surf the Roms and Kernels. Find which one you like best, and stick with it.
Myns warm works pretty well for me with the stock kernel.
plus its a damn good looking rom

I too am looking for suggestions on a good rom to use to have decent battery life. Is Myn the only rom? What other kernels have decent battery life?
+1 I only get like 12hours max when i hardly use my phone... battery is going downhill

Sky Raider.. anyone?

I have been using it for a week now and have to say VERY happy. Who else??
I love it! Should have ran this when it was released!
i absolutely love this ROM, very fast, stable, and just to my liking. I just have to figure out whats causing my batt to drain so fast. i didnt have that problem when i was on cm7 rom. Is anyone else experiencing the batt drain
The Sense ROMs like Skyrider and Newt's stuff definitely look slick and have some nice features, but I can't sacrifice the performance that I get with AOSP. Using default kernels with no overclocking, my quadrant scores are about 50% higher using an AOSP ROM like CM or MIUI than they are with any of the Sense ROMs I've tried. At the end of the day I'd rather get the snappiest performance possible than pretty widgets.

Implying quadrant scores equals high performance.
I'm using skyraider and absolutely love it. I thought stock was snappy as hell, and skyraider is still slightly better. Excited for those guys to release a new version, but I'm in no hurry. These guys really went all out to truly give you that added experience of a custom ROM. Especially the notification bar.
Battery life has been excellent, too. Someone mentioned battery drain, but I'm squeezing well over 30 hours with moderate use. Absolutely no complaints

Um, no. That was your inference, not my implication. Benchmarking is still useful as a metric though; otherwise we're all just sitting around talking about subjective stuff like "feel".
We can talk about stuff besides quadrant scores - for instance, I have much more free system ROM running AOSP than Sense. But really I was just sharing my two cents, if you disagree then you should run a Sense ROM, I promise I won't try to stop you.

SkyRaider and the Gingerbang.....the only two roms with ZERO problem, I'm running Gingerbang and my wife has Skyraider, I can flip a coin and be happy with either one, both of them are rock solid. I have tried them all and wouldn't use anything else as daily driver.
I have been running skyraider zeus for awhile now it has no problems everything works an my battery life is better on this usually around 30 to 40 hours on moderate use an it works good with my slingbox
Same here...loving the Skyraider! Tried MIUI and the Virtuous ROM and they had several issues for me. Skyraider it its for now.

Help w benchmark results

It's very low. I'm rooted on stock rom. Shouldn't the results be a bit higher?
That's about right I get about the same not overclocked With custom rom. You gotta remember this phone is dual-core not quad-core. Quad-core will always run faster in most cases. Now if you over clock the kernal you could run faster. The extra ram we have just help keep the system running smoothly not necessary making it any faster.

I wouldn't worry too much about benchmark scores. If your phone is running good, smooth, and fast then that's all that matters.
Benchmark scores are for nothing but peoples E pen*s. They can be modified to make it look better then they really are. If your phones performing to your standards and not running like crap. Then that's all that really matters.

That's the thing It's not really running to "standards". Lags from time to time and button/app response time could be a bit faster than it is. Thing is I am satisfied with the stock rom but wouldn't mind switching to something SIMILAR that is quicker and less bloat. Just not sure which one would meet that criteria.

Most roms can be debloated. Once your rooted, then you can remove any apps you like. I run The People's Rom. Love it.. (Used it on my OG Epic) It's not debloated, but i remove the apps i don't use via root explorer.

[Q] Looking for a FAST ROM, Epic4G

Can anyone reccomend a solid, fast and battery-friendly ROM for my old Epic? Currently I use Paranoid Android, and while very nice, the battery life and speed of opening apps and such is disappointing.
Thanks!

I've had issues with some stables as well as some nightly's myself, so I don't think it makes too much of a difference IMO on what it's technically called. I'm currently on the 20130101 build of CM10.1 and have been running it for over a month with only one random reboot and no issues at all. If you don't use bluetooth then I'd recommend it.
Do you mean F-A-S-T really? CM7.2 runs fastest amongst all plain, untouched ROMs on my device.
I know CM10.1 is buttery smooth, but it's still Android 4.x. It still bogs a yearold phone down somewhat (you may not feel that, anyway, I don't feel bogged down THAT much but it counts). And that's where a very clean 2.3 build like CM7 come in handy. Plus app compatibility is better, if you're not into Android 4.x specific apps.

You could try Pac-man Rom. I've only had one reboot. And it's pretty snappy opening apps.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks. I"ll give both those a shot. It needs to be fast and stable because im giving my wife my old phone, and she is not nearly as technically minded as I am - i just upgraded to a Galaxy S III with LTE - and I'm hooked. Only drawback is the GS3 needs a physical keyboard variant.
If its for someone not technical you should use either CM7 or The Peoples Rom. They seem to have the best battery life and are the most stable.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
CM7 and the GB TouchWiz roms seem to be the most speed and battery-efficient roms for our devices, but honestly the newer JB roms like PACMan/Provision/CM10/etc. have been pretty damn stable and impressive, depending on how you use it.

[Q] Why are TW ROMs so much faster than AOSP ROMs?

I've been using Android for years now and I'm a huge Linux geek, but does the TouchWiz kernel really make that much of a performance improvement over an AOSP kernel, or is it other things also? When I first got my S4 I was amazed at how fast TW was out of the box, I stuck with it a few days and then went on to AOSP roms. I stayed on AOSP roms for about a week or two and things started to feel slower.
(before anyone flames me, I know benchmark scores don't mean a lot but they are a decent performance measurement) Just for the hell of it I ran Quadrant Advanced OC'd to 1.9 GHz and got a max of 7,000; I was having call quality issues to I decided to switch back to a TW rom, I was using either Wicked or Infamous S4 and while I had it loaded I ran Quadrant and got a whopping 12,700 which blew my mind! After the GE rom came out I was running that for about a week and was getting the same score. I didn't test it on the 4.3 leak though, which is apparently AOSP and not a stripped down TW rom.
So what is it about TW based roms that accounts for the huge difference in performance? Not only are my benchmark scores about 5,000-6,000 points higher, it also feels snappier while opening up programs and changing orientations. Are there a bunch of drivers/kernel modules that are missing or are hacked together in the AOSP roms/kernels that aren't nearly as good as the ones in the "official" roms?
Actually that is not true, I have seen some fast aosp roms out there, it is kernel related, experiment with a different kernel, you will see the results change.

I wouldn't say they're missing or hacked together, but Samsung has all the sources for their devices. Not just the kernel source, but also all the inner workings of the SoCs they're programming for. They have all the information needed to maximize the performance of the devices the make. AOSP roms don't have this luxury.
Think of it like graphics drivers in the Linux world. You can use nvidia's driver blobs (TW roms), or you can use F/OSS developed Nouveau drivers (AOSP).

I never said that it happened on all of the devices that I've had. In most cases the AOSP roms were almost always faster.

Just for fun I'm going to keep a running tally of quadrant benchmarks in here.

GPU: 504 performance governor

Rom: Infamous S4 Google Edition v3
Kernel: Ktoonsez 3.4.0-KT-SGS4
CPU: max 1.998 GHz performance governor
GPU: 504 MHz performance governor
Quadrant scores mean absolutely nothing in terms of how fast a ROM/kernel is. You're basically using a random number generator to base your idea of speed on. TW ROMs are slow as hell when compared to AOSP.

Bench marks aren't completely useless or else companies that review tech products wouldn't use them at all (I'm not speaking necessarily about Android). They do vary by a few hundred points but they do give you a ballpark range. Have you tried out the Google Edition rom yet? It's easy faster than any AOSP rom I've ever used.

I don't have another one to test against, but they feel equally fast to me.
AOSP and AOKP ROMS are by far much smoother. I believe its to do with the lower size of the OS, theres just much fewer processes, and not as much detailing in the menus which just creates smoother overall transitions and a good experience. My only crutch against them are that they heat my Galaxy S4 so much, and i don't know why it would be so, but on TW my device can idle in the 30's, heats to 40's/50's under medium-heavy load and goes up to about 65 when gaming for long periods of time.
On AOKP and AOSP in the same situations i wont ever idle below 50 degrees, moderate usage brings it to mid-high 60's and heavy usage it constantly throttles at 70, and when i disabled my throttle it heated up to 80 so quick that i got scared and quickly turned it back on. All these temps are in C.
I found on the Galaxy S3 that AOKP ran much cooler than it did on the S4, and its just the temps on those ROMS are what keeps me on Touchwiz as my daily driver. Its bad on the battery life and bad on the feel when your phone is warm no matter what you do, yet i love the whole neatness and smoothness of AOKP.

That's not what I've experienced on my S4. The Google Edition (which is TW based) runs circles around Carbon and RevoltJB, I haven't tried pure CM or AOKP yet though.
I*experimented the same problem concerning performance and high temperature on S4 on AOSP*roms.
I opened a issue on CM (CYAN-1768) and SlimRom (SlimRoms/device_samsung_jfltetmo/issues/2) issue tracker.

Because people do not know that ODEXING a ROM optimizes it. Most members see "deodexed" on the title of the zip and believe it will be faster than odex version. *sigh*
But none of them are faster than the new LiquidSmooth rom it's blazing fast. I have used it on my S2 and S3 but this is the fastest aosp rom out easily.

I have never seen an aosp rom be "faster" than stock, and that's on all my phones. I used to like cm/aokp but they always have bugs, whether it's small or big, they always have bugs. On the S3 and on the S4 I have flashed aosp roms but always end up coming back to tw. Tw>aosp

I mean l love the phone how I have it now but I guess to each his own. TW just doesn't work for me. The best TW rom I have seen that is themed and looks gteat is DeathStar but that's just my opinion.
