howdy y'all,
i have a stock ATT GS3 and I tried using odin with the fixboot.tar to root it so i could browse the system files. i ran odin and it said it was successful, but the phone is still not rooted. is there a different way of rooting the stock with baseband I747UCLH9?
thanks!
EDIT: I also tried flashing CWM but when I booted into recovery, it was still the stock. WTF is going on? I had no trouble with this before the LH9 update...

I had tried that and it didn't work. Then after an hour, I stumbled across voodoo rootkeeper and it worked.
Also, no reason to be a smartass. I searched for a while til I figured it out.
I used the galaxys3root.com method. Very fast and easy, used Odin to flash CWM and then flash SuperUser.

I have same baseband and used Mr Robinson's. No problem. You should probably follow directions in his op, you shouldn't have any problems unless you did something.wrong.
Not trying to be a smartass just trying to get people to think for themselves. This forum is cluttered with these type of threads. Just take a look around believe me there is most likely 10 threads already posted for any problem you could have.

I'm not new to flashing ROMs on my Evo, however your forums here are a little more cryptic. My son rooted his phone and flashed CWM and a Cyan Rom. He would like to return to rooted stock. Can someone point me in the direction of the latest OTA Stock Rooted Rom for the Samsung Galaxy S Epic II 4G? He apparantlly followed some video tutorial yada yad yada. I realize ROMs are probably flashed thru the recovery console, is flashing similar to flashing on an Evo from that point? (Boot to recovery -> work your way to Flash from Zip ...)
Thanks in advance.

Here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Instructions are on that page, just make sure you use the full restore, and not the preserve data or you can brick. At the current point we don't have a kernel built from source yet, because of this, you must flash back to stock rooted EL29 via ODIN OC or you will brick. I highly suggest you read my thread in my signature because flashing anything ICS for this phone can be extremely dangerous and will brick your phone if you aren't sure what your doing.
Just to be sure you are looking at the right thread, please go to settings>about phone. Make sure model number is SPH-D710. I only say this cause I haven't heard of a Cyan ROM, and (not trying to be a jerk), most people refer to this phone as the epic 4g touch. You got something weird up there, and there are at least 20 different versions of this phone (galaxy s2).

Yes, that is what I meant by Cyan.
Thanks for the links and tips guys, I will check it out tonight.
Short version is this is the Galaxy 2 from Sprint, the one with the long bastardized name. Took forever to find this forum cause I was looking for something closer in name.
Yes it is the bastardized sprint Samsung galaxy s2. Word to the wise stay on this forum. Any other galaxy s2 forum especially international will have a huge possibility of turning the phone into a nice little paper weight. I have to say thanks for taking the time to find out. We have had a bunch of people come through here with paper weights wondering what happened because they didn't bother to read

Ok, reporting back.
First we tried the 'don't overwrite data' option, everything appeared to be ok until the phone rebooted. It sat on the 4G splash screen in a continual restarting state for about ten minutes. We tried flashing that twice. After that we tried flashing the factory restore with root option, that worked just fine.
Thanks again for the input.
Now he'll have to restore all of his desired apps, but that's his problem, since I told him not to root in the first place. LOL.
Cheers.

I lost my IMEI on my first Sgs3, went flash happy (only AT&T ROMs) but still had data and cell. Not sure where I lost it, but I noticed when I was flashing back to rooted stock from early CM10 preview (official) is when I noticed.
So far with my new phone, I've done the same and still have it. I'm now running Aokp jellybean.
I've had no problems as of today but the fear of losing my imei has definitely caused me to not experiment as much as I would like to! I've rooted, installed CWM-Touch, flashed Ktoonsez Kernel, and flashed back to the AT&T Kernel. I'm honestly afraid to try CM as it seems that ALOT of the people who have lost their IMEI had flashed CM10 or CM9. I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 7" a few months back and it's become my tinker toy to flash ROM's and mess with. I don't want to screw up my $500 Galaxy S3, I like it too much!
I voted as flashed a few, but really it is probably closer to many. Only AOSP based ROMs though. CM9, CM10, and AOKP plus updates for each. Also both Faux and Ktoonsez kernels at various times. IMEI still present.
I do make sure that I flash the EXACT same way every time though since it has worked so far. Only thing I have changed now is moving from latest non-touch CWM (installed through ROM Manager) to latest TWRP (through Goo Manager).
If I end up losing my IMEI without adding variables to my flash process, I will start to believe it is a random occurrence. Until then I have to think partial user error coupled with a bad update script or recovery.
I ALWAYS download the file straight to my phone via WiFi.
Reboot into recovery. Wipe>Factory reset.
Flash ROM.
The last couple days since moving to TWRP I have felt more ballsy and did things a bit differently.
For the first time, I also wiped cache and Dalvik before flashing JB AOKP last night
Still no issues.
Today I decided to flash the ktoonsez JB kernel. I usually only download via WiFi at home (just to keep minimal variables in flashes) but today I did it at work via WiFi. Still have IMEI.
I have NEVER done a Format System so not sure if that might break something.
My process has been if it isn't breaking, try to keep the process as consistent as possible. If something does go wrong, I can say what I did differently. I also haven't had any trouble with the ROMs I flashed despite only doing factory reset then flash.
How do I know if I have any issues with this. What do I look for. I found out and mines good.

I know you found out, but when it happens you will know.
In some cases it seems as though you only get Edge at your maximum speed, in others your mobile data completely died. Generally speaking, there was a lot of confusion and some issues with clarity regarding the issue.
It's possible that there are several different (but vaguely related) issues going around, now that we have our own carrier based forums that should actually help clear it up in my opinion.
Hopefully we will all reach a general consensus on the acceptable recovery (my vote is TWRP!) and method of flashing. The only thing I've personally considered is that it might be an issue with the files transferring via MTP (only because I've never used a phone with MTP instead of mass storage).
I don't think people should be THAT afraid to flash though. If your flash counter is at 0, Samsung should do a warranty swap for you. In addition, it seems like 2 in 25 people (read: NOT FLASHES, but people.) seem to get the issue based only off of the very small number of people in this poll so far.
The reason the issue is so feared is because those that do get it will inevitably be far more vocal than those that don't as they try to find a solution and vent their frustration. Most of the people in the major thread about it didn't have the issue, but were afraid they might lose their IMEI.
I flashed the stock rooted tar that doesn't trip your counter, then injected CWM with dd. I've flashed everything with CWM since then, CM10 included (once) and I still have my IMEI. I'm running AOKP JB now.
I'm about to root and cwm what's your guys input on the best ways

Go for nontrip flash root + CWM topic - worked for so many people without issues.
The only way to screw up IMEI with these ROMs is via Odin, I think. Odin is a scary tool without much documentation, and in past used to be buggy.
Once you get CWM - do not use Odin.

Odin is a scary tool indeed. Someone in the IMEI thread said if I was feeling feisty to flash stock nonrooted OTA ROM via Odin straight from JB AOKP. IMEI is still intact after all that I have done.
EDIT: Also, anyone who reads this. Try out TWRP. We need more people flashing with TWRP, if an IMEI goes missing while using it we can rule out CWM being the problem as some have suggested.

I was recently asked to post some threads here on XDA with the tutorials I have on my site. As time permits I will be posting a series of threads here to the Q&A section that will hopefully answer most questions that might come up.
If you can't find your answer in one of my threads I would highly recommend BluesRulez One Stop FAQ Thread. It is an awesome resource and has answers to just about every question I've seen come up!

This thread details the process of how to root your device without having to flash a full stock ROM. This method works for the Sprint, Boost and Virgin Samsung Galaxy S2 (SPH-D710, SPH-D710BST and SPH-D710VMUB).
This method uses an Odin One-Click Kernel to install a kernel that includes a Custom Recovery. Once booted into the Custom Recovery you can then flash Superuser which will root your phone and give you Superuser access.
Prerequisites:
A PC running Windows with the Samsung Mobile Drivers Installed. The Samsung Mobile Drivers are available here.
Any One-Click Kernel (preferably from the Android version you will be using, i.e. GB, ICS or JB).
All Sprint One-Click Recovery kernels can be found here.
For this particular tutorial I used the following kernels:
Gingerbread: Chris41g's EL26 Stock CWM5 Repack
Ice Cream Sandwich: Agat63's tFI27 Stock Recovery Repack (rev 2)
Jelly Bean: Agat63's Source-Built GB27 Recovery
Superuser (or SuperSU, MIUI Security, and etc) in a flashable zip, saved on your Internal or External SD Card. For this method I used SuperSU v1.25 (but any SU in a flashable ZIP should work). You can download several different versions here.
Although not required it is recommended that you have Samsung Kies installed on your PC as well. You can download Samsung Kies here.
Side-Effects:
This method will trigger the Yellow Triangle upon start-up and will increase your Odin count.
It will also change your startup screen to look like the International GS2 startup screen.
Both of these side-effects are very easy to overcome due to the hard work of Chainfire and Garwynn. You can get TriangleAway from Chainfire's thread here.
For the rest of the tutorial please visit my site: www.rwilco12.com
Enjoy!

You might have to turn SU on depending on which version you flashed. Open the app and see if under settings you see something like "Enable SuperUser" and make sure it's enabled.
If that doesn't fix it we may need to try another zip with a different set of symlinks. Either way, we're here for you and will get you squared away.

If you're asking - Can I flash VM builds on the Sprint D710, the answer is - yes. Did it when I tested the builds and everything worked properly.
If you're asking - Can I flash a VM build and be on VM service? Obviously you'll need to be activated to their service and provisioned properly. That's when you'd need to make sure that mmsc/apn/nv data is captured. I don't know if VM is a byod provider. (write that shiz down)

Yes. Many, many people have used this method successfully.
There's nothing wrong with a stock kernel, it just doesn't have a custom recovery packed into it or any kernel tweaks.
But I am confused... If you're already rooted why are you pulling your hair out?

K. Before you dive in too much further I would recommend doing a little more research. This device had had issues in the past that have made it very easy to brick. You should be very careful.
As a side note - This thread is a how to root thread but it sounds like you're already rooted. I don't know that there's any reason to reroot your device. You don't actually have to be rooted to get on JB either. You could just flash a one-click of a JB ROM.

I'm downloading the pre rooted, no data Odin version now and will attempt a restore of wicked once I can boot up again. Thanks for the link and the help.

The way I did mine today I saved everything I could to my computer. .. then not only did I do a factory reset and wipe the caches I also formatted the internal memory because of all the issues I've heard of and also experienced. Other than that I didn't do anything special. ..Please let us know if you get it back up.

Got WIcked MD4 back up with all my data intact... only wifi wasn't working at all with the ROM. Thought maybe it was an issue with the stock kernel or modem via Odin... so i flashed Ktoonsez and Mk3 like I was running up until this morning... wiped cache and dalvik... Got hung up on my custom boot img for 10 min and couldn't get her to boot up. Trying a restore again now. Hopefully 3rd times a charm.
I was able to get Wicked MD4 back up but can't seem to get Wif to work. Any ideas on how I might remedy?

you might try to forgot the network (press and hold on the name, then select forget) and then connect to it again.
Did you check your md5 on your download to make sure you didn't get a bad download of mk3 Rom?
Yeah turns out it was a bad download of the WS MK3 Rom from the other morning that set problems off. After a few tedious hours flashing kernels and modems and some trial and error I was able to stabilize and back up a full working nandroid of the MD4 setup.
Flashed Wicked SensTW4.3 MK3 with Decimalmans TW kernel yesterday and I'm really feeling it... super stable for a 1st Beta release. Barring a cpl random app fc's and the fact I can't seem to figure out how to install a wallpaper onto the lockscreen.. it's badass. MAD props to Dazed and Team Wicked on the ROM.. it far exceeds my expectations and am fired up to see where it progresses from here. Thanks for your hard work and efforts to impress us....
Happy Xmas all...
