Hey everyone, can someone tell me what can I do with a rooted kindle fire? I know you can install cynanogen but what does that do?
I'm planning on getting one for christmas and want to know a few things before buying it.
I've never rooted anytihng before but I've modded xbox, wii, ds, psp, iphones, etc.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum section to ask this.
Why open an extra thread when this topic is already here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374797

Thanks you need to root to get the Android Market
Another q, can the kindle fire connect to Ad Hoc networks?
The Fire doesn't support ad-hoc networks natively, but there's a workaround here.
thanks.........
I'm considering rooting my Kindle Fire, but am still unsure. Doesn't rooting it void your warranty? I'd hate to have something happen to it and then be stuck with an unusable KF that I can't even return. What are your guys' thoughts on it?
Patience
Basically, a rooted kindle will allow side-loading of apps, outside of Amazon's built in app store. Their app store will not list apps like Netflix because Amazon is hoping most users will utilize their streaming service and provide an additional income stream (that's why the kindle is so inexpensive).
Everyone is waiting for a fully functional CyanogenMod7 or Ice Cream Sandwich custom ROM to be released. Until that happens, I have rooted my kindle, copied the apk files of select apps from my Android phone and side-loaded them to my kindle.
I have found the kindle the runs almost everything I want and allows me to be patient for the upcoming ROM releases.
Same thing as other rooted Android Devices.
Run custom ROMs and such.

Taking a quick look at the warranty on Amazon.com, I don't see anything about your warranty being void if you you root or modify your Kindle. That said, the warranty won't be valid if you break your Kindle by rooting in.
If you need to send it in for repairs, you can always flash a stock rom. If it's too broken to be flashed, it's probably too broken for Amazon to tell that you rooted it:

rooted fire, wht esle?
Two weeks ago I rooted my kindle fire. I was about to throw it away because I hated the interface etc.
Stumbled on to the xda site than god.
Am now running jellybean 4.1.1. Amazing and now I can't put this thing down.
What else will this device do? What other ROMs are available? How do you stay on top of upgrades?

Been there, done that. She was seriously pissed for about three days...then she knew I was right.
I have been sorely disappointed with the compass on my Nitro. When I got the phone and it was on 2.3.5, the compass was amazing. But, as time has gone on, it has become useless.
I've looked through several forums and contacted LG directly. LG offered to take it in for warranty repair but, because of my job, I can't be without a phone for the 10 days that it would take to have it sent in.
My question is: Has anybody found a successful solution to the bad compass?
I have tried it on ICS 4.0.3 Leak, Stock ICS 4.0.4, CM9, CM10, and ParanoidAndroid.

Go back to stock gingerbread and see if your compass works there. If not, sorry bud, nothin I can do to help you except say send it for warranty repair. I got mine back in a week.

I'm in the same boat, check out this thread over at the LG Forums:
http://support.lgforum.com/lg/topics/lg_nitro_hd_compass_doesnt_work
LG knows about the issue and suggests recalibration...But as you'll read that doesn't work for some people, or at least not for long (myself included) and someone even had a warranty replacement done and STILL had the same issues with the replacement!!

Interesting.
For me, it's not that the compass doesn't work at all, it's just usually inaccurate and slow to respond. For example, if you just rotate the phone slowly while flat on a table with a compass app open, "north" should be pointing the same direction the whole time. But it doesn't, it varies quite a bit, sometimes ridiculously far off depending on the direction the phone is pointing. I assume it's something to do with poor magnetic shielding or something.
The only thing that consistently works for me is drawing figure-8's, just like I had to do with my old Motorola Milestone.
1. Open compass application
2. Hold the phone above you, parallel to the ground, with the screen
3. Keeping the phone in the same relative position, wave your arm in large figure eights like you were painting the sky. (by "same relative position," I mean the phone stays parallel to the ground, screen skyward, and you swivel your hand while making the figure eights so that the phone doesn't swivel.
4.Make about six figure eights in a row without stopping. Try to keep the same path, phone orientation, etc. The bigger the figure eight, the better.
5. Bring the phone back down so you can see the screen. The compass needle should slowly swing to North, and then hold North - until you move. Repeat if necessary.
6. Repeat as necessary. I have to do it every time I want to use the compass

If you google att galaxy s3 jelly bean in a news search and limit the range to past month you'll find that this info has been out for about 3 weeks. I have a website link on my work PC to a site that lists when the update is coming. Att still says pending though. I'll post the site monday if I remember. That said even 3rd world nations are getting it. Jelly bean should've been on this phone at launch and I'm really wishing HTC had an SD card slot so I wouldn't have bought this buggy POS phone.

Buggy? Have you read reviews? Are you on a rom or stock? You must either have a junk phone or you must be doing something to it.
Stock ICS on my S3
I've made a compilation thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984126
I am on the stock rom; never rooted. The first bug I had was that notifications I would apply in the stock calendar app wouldn't stay as I set them. The second bug I've had that's never been fixed is that it takes about 10 full seconds for the brightness to auto adjust; in fact it's ruining some of my vids/pics if my thumb covers the sensor by the front speaker. Another bug I have is that when I rotate the phone it often doesn't rotate (yes I've calibrated) then I have to rotate it back and forth to get it to go.
All that said I didn't mean to offend you hard core fans. I've had a lot of different Android phones and this one is decent enough. I've had to factory reset like 3 times to see if the problems go away....they do not. The notification sound not setting was fixed by the last update though. I may have a lemon but unfortunately it's not messed up enough that I can justify a replacement. It's slightly annoying all the time, and very annoying at other times; and that's when I factory reset and install back the exact same apps so I can't blame them.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984126
Hi all, there is a small app I wrote that will solve the problem with the Nexus 4 dying while connected to the charger overnight. It's completely free (no ads also) and can be downloaded from Google's Play Store. No ROOT required, works on completely stock phones. I tried it on my phone and haven't had a SoD for 5 nights (I used to have it almost every night). Also a colleague of mine used to suffer from this and the app solved his problem too.
The app basically puts a wakelock on the phone that will allow for the backlight to go off, so the screen doesn't age, but will prevent the CPU from sleeping while charging. Once external power is disconnected, the wakelock is released and so the app does NOT consume any battery (while in automatic mode).
So if you happen to have the same issue, feel free to try the app and save yourself the troubles of returning otherwise a perfectly good phone.
P.S. I have just uploaded the app, so if it's not yet visible for your country, please try again in a few hours.
Update: Now the application checks if the power is connected when the device is powered on, because otherwise the wakelock was not acquired when powering on with charger connected. Unfortunately this requires a new permission ("RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED") and the application to be opened after updating for the receiver to be registered by the system. Also I added a notification in the status bar while the application is running. You have to enable it in the settings if you want it displayed.
will test it an report back

its NOT a hardware issue, software related. was VERY common on android 4.1.2, especially on the galaxy nexus. it happened to all the different nexus, nut the gnex suffered the most. 4.2.2 fixed the issue, and google did say it was a real issue. it still happens, but much rarer than before. btw, there are a few apps that bring it on for the nexus 4, one known app to bring on sod is ezekeels experience app. chew on that.

Exactly. But it listens for charger connected / disconnected to acquire / release the wakelock and thus consumes energy only while the device is connected to an external power source (you can see it starting and stopping in the manage applications settings menu). True, that's not a "solution" (that's Google's job), but it doesn't interfere with the normal device operation and does not require any user interaction other than enabling it on install, so until there is a real solution it's the best I can come up with .

I have no idea. My first thought was to create a Daydream as those seemed to help too, but I could not turn the display off (you can only control the brightness but that would still keep the backlight on). The strange thing is that while "dead" something in the system is still working because an application that shows the battery percentage by changing the color of the notification LED was still working. Even after I had unplugged the phone. I know that it might sound like a heresy here, but I don't want to use custom ROMs (I use my Nexus for development and keeping it stock for compatibility is a must), so trying different kernels and ROMs was a no-go.

I only recently got my hands on the Nexus 4. I live in Bulgaria and Google does not sell devices here, so I had to either wait for any of my colleagues to go to the US on a business trip while the device was in stock or pay more than 150% to buy one from a local reseller. I've been on 4.2.2 since day one. No custom ROMs, no root, not even unlocked boot loader.

With all due respect (honestly) and not sarcastically- if this was the case wouldn't the phone come rooted already and in developer mode? I am pretty sure it is being marketed as the flagship "pure google" phone and not only for developers. That said it is easily understandable as to why this is a frustrating issue.
To the OP: A million thanks! I hope this app does the trick- regardless thanks for your efforts and making this community what it is.

The HTC One is likely running an OEM version of Andriod called Sense, of which (iirc) the source hasn't been released, so you won't find it for the KF. However, there are plenty of other ROMs available that may suit your needs. Before we get into that, though, I must strongly suggest you get a factory cable before attempting anything, as it will help you in case things don't go according to plan (they rarely do). After that, there is a thread at the top of this forum that serves as a FAQ, and can be used as a guideline for pointing you in the right direction regarding what steps must be taken to get you where you want to be.
Good luck
Ok thanks for the reply, but whats a factory cable? NOOb question alert

Its also known as a fastboot cable, they are very useful when your kindle gets a red screen of death, or you get stuck in a boot loop without any means of recovery because you can plug the cable in and it immediately boots up and goes into fastboot so you can reflash the system image from there and such.
