When running Android, my phone gets hot. I also know that when it gets hot, the phone will shut down when I open/close the keyboard, and later have this behavior even when the phone is cool. I am wondering if the increase in heat may be damaging the internals of the Tilt 2? I am about to get my third one in from ATT, as I had to send my first and current one back because of this.
I am in no way blaming the devs or anything, I know I run Android at my own risk. I am just curious if anyone else has had a similar problem or knows of a solution/other reason for this behavior.
Do you only have this behavior in Android...? If so, you probably have no grounds for replacing the phone...
Which version are you running?
The Blazn package overclocks the CPU by default, which could cause it to get warmer than you are used to in WinMo.
Also, the power savings aren't totally finished, so again it will more than likely run warmer than Windows.
Did you disable the Auto Backlight Control under WinMo? Failing to do that can cause the backlight to stay on all the time which will draw a fair amount of power (and generate heat).
If it's getting really hot then I would think there is something else at fault, but you need to provide more info.

yeah shouldnt be getting "hot." maybe a little warm. and i would suggest taking it out of any cases you have it in while running droid or overclocking.
if any thing its the battery thats getting hot....the battery may be damaged if anything and you may loose some of your capacity to charge...so change the battery...idk but that maybe the issue...if it starts to get hot you should reboot and dont let it run hot for a long period of time...or maybe its time for another phone one too many drops...idk only some suggestions
I used to have this, its caused by the battery being loose in the craddle.

Hi, i have the problem that my desire reboots in my pocket. Sometimes in my jeans, but very often when i am snowboarding. This really sucks. You want to take a quick picture and your desire is off or rebooting. Is there a chance to edit the behavior of the power button?
I also tried the lock screen with pin, but it also happens.
I use 2.3 c Leedroid. The power off or reboot thing only happens in the pocket. If i have the desire on a table or not in the jeans it never reboots. So it should not be a stability issue.
Someone with the same experience? Any advices or a patch to change the power off /reboot behavior?
Best regards
Stefan
What is the temperature of the phone in your pocket? Seems very unlikely that you actually power the phone on and off in your pocket especially if you use a pin lock screen.
When i am snowboarding it can be that the phone gets a little bit colder. But if i carry my desire in my jeans it is at normal temperature. Mostly i hear the boot sound after sitting down in my car for example. So it must have something to do with pressing the power button.
But can the temperature when snowboarding really cause the rebooting? I put the phone in the inner pocket of my jacket, so that it not gets to cold.
Best regards
Stefan
No idea how to stop this reboot / power off issue?
Have you ever deliberately tried to turn the phone off/reboot when the screen is turned off? And did you succeed?
And the phone reboots when the temperature gets to high not to low, if it gets to low it will just freeze up(not literally). So again what is the temperature of the phone in your pocked?
Ok,
thanks for the answer. Than it seems that my phone reboots. But it strange that it only happens in the packet. Ok in my normal jeans i guess its 25 degrees.
But when Snowboarding i guess it is 5 - 10 degrees in the pocket, eventually less?
Best regards
Stefan
Hi,
so today the phone reboots again in my pocket...
It reboots when i am driving in my car, or when i am out skiing. Normally it do not reboot. Prhaps it is an issue with changing the gsm cells or something.
I am pretty shure that it must be a stability issue. As written above i use LeeDroid.
Has someone a recommendation what i can use instead? Or how to make the image rock solid?
Best regards
Kai

Usually hardware issues cause reboots..Does this happen only in your pocket?
And there is no problem with Leedroid perse..Not unless you've overclocked it, or installed one of the datato-alternatelocation patches and crapped it.
Hi,
yes normally in the pocket when travelling.
One time i had a reboot when using the phone. I use the phone since 3 month.
But when the phone is in a pocket and i am traveling a reboot happens regularly.
Waht do you mean with Overclocking? I use Set CPU. Should i restrict it to 1000 MHZ?
At the moment i set onDemand profile from 128 - 1190 MHZ.
Thanks and best regards

Some CPU's may struggle with higher O/C values, if you experience instablilities try a lower clock speed.

Nice to know you read the first post of the rom thread and overclock with caution.
So yes, clock it down at least to 1152 Mhz or 1113 Mhz and if you still expiriance issues go back to 998 Mhz. Don't know if you use a screen off profile but it is also better to set the minimum to 245 Mhz.
Ok thanks, i will try and report...
Today...the unthinkable happened.
I dropped my phone from about 3 feet!
Luckily, I had a case on it, and there wasn't any damage to it...cosmetically. When I went to make sure there wasn't any internal damage, I tried a SetCPU stress test, a quadrant benchmark, an antutu benchmark, and a Linpack benchmark.
SetCPU was stable, quadrant was higher than before, and linpack was about the same. However, when I got to Antutu, my score was about 1000 less than before.
Before, I got RAM=~950, CPU Integer=~1825, and CPU Float=~1427. However, now I get RAM = ~700, CPU Integer = ~1350, and Cpu Float = ~1150. Everything else was about the same.
I should also note that at the time of testing, the phone was pretty hot (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The original scores were achieved on 80-90 degrees. Would you say this is a coincidence (and it was caused by heat), or hardware damage?
Coincidence.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I can run quadrant twice, doing nothing between tests but push the start test button, and get two completely different scores.
It was the heat after all. I let it cool down to 80 degrees fahrenheit, and it's back to the normal 6000+ scores. I feel so relieved now.
Did you pick up all the binary bits from the floor? Maybe some bits fell out so phone is still busy looking for the missing bits.

My HTC One M8 fell by 2 feet. On the corner; has hard shell.
After this, the phone was very slow. The kind of slowliness I do not try to dig, and just reboot. Reboot took over 5mn. Then, phone kept screen off; I knew the phone was working: received a phone call; power button was working fine because long press on it could light the flash (Xposed customisation); volume buttons also work fine. After long press power+volume, I could reboot, and during reboot, the screen came one again. Screen could turn on each time I rebooted. After boot was completed, if I let screen timeout and go of, no way to turn it on again.
If I don't let screen go off, and keep it busy, and try to use my phone:
- background image animation lags a lot
- tactile screen works almost fine
- apps are responsive, but viewing on screen lags a lot.
- all system tools report a good iddle time, low load, and available CPU and RAM.
- the whole phone behaves like when it's over-heating, but temperature was low. The problem was perfectly reproductable during several hours.
- system behavior could also be compared toa computer working with full software rendering, without any hardware acceleration. CPU and RAM feel good, CPU reports iddle time, but graphics lag.
Power button was working fine on hardware side because i could use it to force reboot, and switch light on. But power button could not turn screen on. Hardware of screen was working fine, because after reboot, i could get a working screen. But, how could a simple fall produce a software issue ?
I had replaced my battery myself some time ago; so, I know that I have not glued it the way it's done at the manufactory; also I had to break tapes, and could not replace them. I have placed all screws correctly. My thoughts have been:
- CPU or GPU are not strictly overheating, but, maybe their physical connection to heat sink is bad
- maybe the battery moved a bit, and is pressing against something, deforming a heat connection, or pressing hard against a sensible component (and alter it's value)
- inertia could have pulled a cable out of it's plug; maybe there is a bad connection somewhere. Power lines had poor connexion providing too little current (or undervoltage); data line disconnected.
If the GPU is partly broken, system can fall back in software rendering, and a broken GPU may not imply a loss of screen; just switching to an other video mode.
After leaving the phone off for 1h, and rebooting 12 times, phone works perfectly fine again.
There is no way this could be a software issue.
It was a hardware issue, that had very little impact on something, and fixed itself after some hours.
May not be GPU itself, but really thinck it was "video related".
Hi out there,
i bought my GNEX a few weaks ago, and its awsome. But there are a few minor things, i realy hate. One of these was the heat problem. My GNEX gets realy hot near the cam where the SOC is. I was just browsing a few min or ideling through Android and i could feel it.
Im using liqiudsmooth and franco kernel and Nova Launcher.
First thing i did to solve the problem was undervolting.
Im now an this stats:
1344 MHz 1200mV
1288MHz 1125mV
1036MHz 1025mV
729MHz 925mV
384MHz 825mV
That helped a little bit, but not that much. Than i donwloaded the app Usage timelines (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hbHMudXNhZ2V0aW1lbGluZXMiXQ..)
i found that the Nova Laucher was using 50% of the cpu in idle and 60-70% when heavily used.
I restartet and reinstall, but no change. Since i switched back to the stock Launcher i have no more heat problems.
So may that can help
cya beamer
Useful info, however, one has to question your complaint of excessive heat when you're overclocking, kinda comes with the territory don't you think
Thats true
but i wasnt overclocking, i set the maxx speed to 1228, which is only 28MHz more than stock, so ther should be now difference. Another point is, the stock voltages of 1228 and 1384 MHz are equal at 1350mV.
HeHe!
I saw 1344 so was natural to assume o/c, I am completely stock on mine and mine barely warms up much, not that i've noticed anyway. However, I have come straight from a 0ne X back to a Gnex, and that used to really heat up. It was like having a bipolar phone. Sipped at the juice when on standby and raped the battery when on lol. BTW, Gnex is a way better device despite the specs difference.
Do you use the stock laucher?
yeah Onex looks realy nice, but it cost 550€, akku drains fast etc. Also i dont want to have a mobile toaster in my pants.
I was tempted to it by the specs of course, and it is a good device on the whole, but is riddled with unacceptable bugs. I got the opportunity to get my hands on a mint Nexus S and set about getting it up to date and onto 4.0.4 with the intention of using it as a backup phone. However, the more i used it, the more I liked it, and despite it being less than a quarter as powerful as the One x, it was smoother to use in the UI. It really got me tempted to get a Gnex again as my daily driver, so I did, and I'm not shifting back now, not till the next Nexus phone comes out.
Oh, and my Gnex is 100% Stock, non rooted, pure untouched google goodness
If it ain't broke don't try to fix it I say. And it works just fine for me the way it is...
My phone gets VERY hot during charging + streaming music via bluetooth and + gps with navigation running w/ screen on
i am on AOKP + Franco kernel. and using Apex launcher
will try undervolting i guess
Yes ure right, noot a quad or hexa or dekacore or a 59713546inch Display make a good Phone.
I has to be a good partner in daily use, u can rely on, and thats the nexus.
Back to the heat problems:
May there some other people out there, who have problems, that would be nice to hear ur experiences

Go ahead. That usage will make the device run hot regardless.
Absolutely, it's cost me a fortune in android phones to realise that. Anyway, for what it's worth, and to stray back on topic (apologies for that) mine, on stock, only gets mildly warm.

i think undervolt is an option but not the solution.
Another option may is to use only USB charge if u want to use the Phone while charging

I think in this case undervolting is the only possibility. I dont know how fluidly the GNEX handle Maps or streaming etc when the max core speed is reduces to 1000 or 700MHz. May it will do ok and dont get too hot.
As long as the phone isn't ridiculously hot to touch you should be fine with it getting hot for 5-10min. Any longer and you actually might have an issue. If it burns a hole....well then...ya...ha.

Hi Smokeey, you may right that when the nexus get hot for a few min, its in the short run no big issue. But hot means high akku drain which u want to avoid normaly.
Im working in a company who handle these special display adhesives and over a longer time the heat can cause yellow areas, which i dont want to have.
Beside that i dont like it to hold a device in my Hand which is so hot

Does anyone have issues with your SGSII T989 phones having extremely high temps?
I get it when using the GPS, charging the phone while i'm talking on the phone, and doing a few other activities. It did not do this on my first purchase of the phone and i'm a bit weary of the temps as sometiems it gets quite warm!
Currently I'm on O.E. SGS II Rom w/ root, that's about it! No OC no mods or anything of that sort. (Just CWM and Root).
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as this heat as caused me from using my phone each day more and more.
P.S. I WAS on Juggernaut Rom and then flashed back to Stock, and it was having this heating issue then, should i try to do a complete 100% wipe like on one of the development threads and start from scratch like I just got the phone from the factory again? I wiped my system using Odin and it seems to of kept my old programs, no information like games and etc. was kept however, does anyone think that might be the problem? Once again thanks!

If you are rooted you might want to try a different kernel and maybe SetCPU. I had some overheating/temp issues a while back and after I lowered my CPU a bit and set it to an Ondemand state with a profile for screen off running CPU very low when not actively in use it seemed to fix the problem.. Btw SetCPU is free for XDA users, there is a thread somewhere in the Android Hacking Apps forum..

Edit: I thought it was free to xda users, I checked and cant find the thread, maybe I was wrong or they changed it..

I'm on the stock kernal, I was on the modified 1.7ghz kernal before i believe, as I could overclock over that, but i just recently stopped that and went back to stock. I was and still am expecting the phone to malfunction on me sometime soon lol. It's been a really reliable phone so far! My G1 and Mytouch 3G slide (gf's phone) took soo many dumps on me while I used it. Each of those phones were probably sent back 5-8 times and they were kept completely stock for a while!
Back on subject though. Any kernals that go well with the factory rom? I don't favor any aftermarket roms right now as they're not stable enough for my usage IMO.
I have heat problems but I've always had the stock kernel...

Undervolt at the stock clock if you want to lower temps. However, charging will always increase heat especially if you are using the phone at the same time, and depending on ambient temps.
Dude my moms sgsII literally got fried because it heated up once. She was using her phone normally and all of a sudden it started heating up. She kept using it and the next day the phone won't turn on, charge or get into download mode. It looked like what a hard brick would look like. So I just returned it for a HTC one S.
Btw she was on full stock.
My phone heats up a lot because I'm down south with 90-95 degree temps and I keep phone in the car dock by the windshield but it never failed on me.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
I thought it was a well fixable issue. Guess not? lol... Either way, everytime my batt temps rise, i notice i get 40-45C and i start to get worried. So if i'm in a car, i'd just put it next to the AC vent while the car's running and temps get down to about 25C and i'm good again. I just don't feel comfortable with the phone anymore like I use to. It never did this before, why now??
I have an app that warns when it goes over 40 and it happens daily. I was downloading torrents one time and it keeps the screen active while downloading and the thing got like 62 celsius before I realized what happened. It almost burnt my hand lol. if your ever in sunlight or palming the phone while using gps on 4g.
overheating is very common with this phone I wouldn't worrie about it to much it is uncomfortable though if in your pocket

Also remember, any app that uses hardware acceleration for graphics or video (games, browser, etc.) or gps will cause the phone to heat up if used for a prolonged period of time.

Are you sure I shouldn't worry? I mean, I don't want solder points falling off due to too high of a temp. Then again these temps don't even reach 100C yet. I've got the same app too probably, it's a battery monitor that tells u when the phone gets too hot. mine's goes off everytime i'm around 40+

Yep, I use GPS and often. It's just so much easier than guessing your way off a piece of paper. But yeah, like you the phone gets soo hottttttt. I have to always put the phone to my AC vent.
It's normal to a point.
These are serious computers we have.
Think of the old P486's back in the day, those things needed huge heat sinks and some even had fans
our phones which is what, 4x the cpu power and not only no heat sink but everything is squished together inbetween a hot screen and a hot battery
That being said, I use a program called A-see, which is to watch my security cameras while out.
And if I forget to close it out (Actually exit the program) It will keep running and running and eventually probably fry my phone
lets put it this way, I will actually start to feel it in my jeans pocket, it gets that hot.
Also I have a program which will alert me if my phone gets to 130 degrees F
And will automatically shut the phone down if it gets to 140
overheat protection or something
I had this issue where whenever I try to charge my phone it would overheat to the point unbearable to touch I went back to stock flash different roms in the end i exchanged it it was still under warranty
