I have the Samsung Galaxy S 16GB but am about to return it due to the useless GPS and get a Desire (or eventually recover the money and buy a Desire later)
How accurate is the current Desire's GPS? Can anyone show me some MyTracks paths for instance?
Another thing that worries me is audio quality on the 3.5mm as I use the units a lot for music. How well does it behave with audiophile headphones? Including low-impedance ones.. any background hiss, etc?
The Galaxy S is really excellent at audio and the screen is amazing but I really need a well-balanced unit that includes a reliable GPS.
I have never had an issue with the GPS but I've only used it for in-car navigation every now and again. The sound on the Desire is acceptable for me. I'm using a pair of Klipsch Image X1s and it sound the same as, if not better than the iPod.
It does however seem to have a volume limiter on it which is bloody annoying! Still it's not an issue if you have a decent pair of 'phones.
Same expeirence here. Music quality on headphones is at least the same as on the ipod classic (old 80GB model). Gps outside has a quick fix (usually within 10 seconds) and i haven't had any signal los yet (except for tunnels and inside buildings).

A My Tracks sample for GPS accuracy. Unlike the Galaxy S, Desire never lost the signal.

Audio quality is almost as good as Galaxy S. Maybe a little bit noisy, but it's a phone after all.

Audio quality is at least comparable (or better) with iRiver T60 and better than in most ipods. I'm using Koss Porta Pro or AKG K416P headphones.
10 sec or less GPS fix on desire is only if using AGPS (you have the 3G so it can load satellite data). Otherwise it takes more than a minute. It helps if you are not moving.

Thanks for the feedback.
I don't really care about the fast fixes. Don't mind waiting at all even if the initial gprs assistance is off. That I care about is accuracy and keeping the locks after the inicial fix. That is something the Galaxy can't do.
I gathered some more feedback about the audio and while the Desire seems weaker in that area it should be good enough for normal use.
One thing I'm now wondering is if it suffers from the same "lag" or occasional pauses that I got on the Galaxy. Sometimes it would pause for 2 or 3 seconds while some IO was happening, sometimes more. Perhaps I'll post that in a different thread.
Meanwhile if anyone has more GPS tracks (google maps is fine) especially driving in town, I'd like to see them. The ones I did with my Galaxy S are just scary and full of zig-zags... don't want that again.
I’ve used my desire to track routes with Maverick when out mountain biking in Portugal. I put it in my shorts pocket and it tracked me very accurately without any variations. I haven’t really used it in my car while driving. I can give it shot today and see what results I get. Obviously it’s not going to be as accurate while driving as it is when cycling because of the speed factor but I will let you know later on.
I have used my desire since I got it in April, as my Ipod, and Tom Tom and cycle computer. It does all these thing very well. I agree about the headphones, should be decent quality. Have not experienced any problems with music play back, while doing other things. Gps seems very accurate. The desire is now my main music device, there are several music apps which are better than the stock player, Mixzing is one and it now has an equalizer, which I don't use, but is there if you need it.
Hi Beowulf_pt I’ve uploaded two tracks I recorded yesterday when I was out driving. Both of them seem very accurate and don’t deviate or jump about at all. The 2nd one is over 34miles long and is very accurate. A lot of the roads I went down have tree/hedge coverage on both sides too. I you want to get a good idea of what the roads look like you can go onto Google earth street view as all of Northern Ireland has street view. I’m very impressed with the performance of the GPS on the desire anyway.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for taking those, those don't have many low speed driving with lots of turning probably but in any case are very accurate, really pretty good.
If anyone wants a good laugh, this is what the great Desire's rival produces.. the mighty Samsung Galaxy S:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...09658333539209.00048d2c2727adf4f601e&t=h&z=13
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...09658333539209.00048d44b071f0237417b&t=h&z=14
I tried everything (except plugging in an external antenna yet) but it loses lock so often and is so imprecise that tracks look like that and navigation is pathetic.
It’s strange the results you got with the Samsung. It’s kind of understandable that it’s inaccurate between buildings but in areas that are quite open it’s bad as well. Did you try it with Assisted GPS (mobile internet) on? Admittedly I didn’t use it when I took mine but maybe it might help yours. The only City I could really use mine on is Belfast and I’m off at the moment so I would get the chance to try it for a few days. Belfast wouldn’t be in the same class as city as Lisbon. I still think the Desire would get a lot better results than the Samsung though.
I think the Samsung GPS chip has alzheimer's. It gets confused quite easily.
I just "upgraded" from a dinc to a dinc2 and I'm pretty disappointed. I am trying to see if I can get some help from you guys before my 14 days are up.
1) The external speaker is horrible. On my dinc I used the speaker phone for all calls and 3-5 hours of XM Radio a day. The speaker was loud, clear and oddly amazing. The dinc2 -- I can kind of make a phone call, but it's not very loud and there is a nasty 'tin can' sound to it. Playing music through this thing is just horrible compared to the dinc, it's not loud enough and sounds like gibberish.
2) In call quality through the headset speaker has the same tin can sound and I swear I can hear myself talk through the headset sometimes.
3) The size -- love it
4) Software -- love it
I actually love everything about this phone other than the audio quality. I brought it back to the Verizon store a couple hours after buying it and they told me that it just had a lower quality speaker. After reading some reviews I think he is full of it. Please help/advise!!
Thanks
neal
I an pretty disappointed with mine as well.

The speaker does seem to be a bit lower quality. I came from an Eris, though, which had an even worse speaker, so I didn't really notice it. However, the general consensus seems to be that the speaker is not as great as other devices.
What kind of headset are you using? I use headphones plugged into the 3.5mm port and it sounds pretty great to me. Bluetooth isn't as high fidelity, but it's still not bad (I assume this is due to compression over A2DP), and definitely not tinny. I haven't tried bluetooth communications as I actually don't use my phone as a phone very often (so much for being a phone!).
I thought it was just mine with the external sound speaker problem.
VZW is sending me a new one. Should be here today.
Will test the new one, but based on this thread, I'm not optimistic that another one solves the problem.
I also requested a new one because my GPS takes 5-8 minutes to lock on.

Any one else have volume issues when playing videos. Can't get sound off of videos on card. Any advice?
I need feedback. The sound on my Note 2 sounds kinda jumbled up at max volume. The sound is pretty loud, but I sometimes can't appreciate the clarity. I can feel the thump, but not the clarity of every note in a particular song. Is this how the speaker was made, or is something up with my speaker. Lets say I play "Party Rock Anthem," I can hardly feel the beat, it sounds almost flat. Please let me know. Thank you.
What music player app are you using ?
You can try changing the equalizer settings and see if it helps.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
I'm using the stock Samsung player. I get the same results when using other players as well. Are all speakers the same model on every Note 2 sold? My Note is from the 1st batch, dating back to October.
It's possible whatever you're listening to has lower quality audio bit rate. Try downloading a high bit rate (320kbps) (yeah I know that it's still compressed) and listen to that. My songs are fine unless they're something like 192kbps

Might be pretty cool WITH subwoofers inside though. ..lol jl audio

Well, this is going to sound odd, after about a couple of hours of continuous playback, the audio is sounding better. Never knew these speakers require quite a bit of burn-in besides the AMOLED display.
I just got it yesterday and here is my exp
1. Even though I use it very carefully (still waiting for my case and screen protector arrive ), I have couples minors scratches on the screen (which I dont know why it happens on the Gorrila Glass)
2. Overheat auto dim brightness when I use maximum brightness about 15 mins
3. GPS sucks !!!
4. Sound quality so bad compare to my iphone 4s, especially when listening music by headphone (mine is Audio-Technica ATH-M50s/LE) or by AUX cable on my car. Iphone 4s give me louder and more crispy sound. This issues happens to me before with Nexus 4. I really doubt that Qualcom chipset sucks at music experience.

1. not sure how people do this, are you tossing your phone in a pocket full of change or with your keys? Have diamonds in your pocket? I find that when I keep my phone and ONLY my phone in my pocket I never get scratches.
2. On full brightness with a 1080p movie playing I have had no overheating problems at all. And that was outside in the heat of the day.
3. I find the GPS takes a little to get a fix, but once it has it...its accurate and doesnt lose it.
4. The sound using my Klipsch S4 earbuds is just as good as it was on my Galaxy Note 2. The Bluetoth audio is just a tiny bit less clear but I am no audiophile and cant compare accurately due to my horrible hearing.
Of course these are my opinions. If you dont like the phone...return or sell it?

not one single good thing listed in your experience with the device, yes i would return it and run along elsewhere.
Gorilla glass isn't hard to scratch, it's harder to break(given how thin the glass is it really is amazing that it doesn't break dropping out onto carpet).
I've had no GPS issues at all
I think the audio may have to do with the safe volume crap they have going on.
My issue is the stupid implementation of the emergency calling system..I've called 911 7 times in the 2 weeks I've had it. Press and hold!? That's the only thing my leg can do..I will return the phone over this issue

For the GPS, do 2 things .Download GPS status from the play store and se how long it takes to show locked on GPS status app.If its taking long on an open area you have a defective unit.We have 3 OGP purchased at different times with no GPS issues whatsoever. The next step is connect to your home wi fi with no gps.Maps will tell you to change your settings you need to check and uncheck the GPD boxes several times to get the setting to take.
Glass issues, these days to scratch a glass like these take effort

Overall I think the OGP is a very good phone. Two things that do bother me are 1.) the music output is only mediocre. I have to say my Note 2 has much better sound quality. 2.) the screen is very reflective - it's a shame because the screen is very good but the reflections make it somewhat difficult to read off of in brighter conditions.
I seriously don't have any complains with this phone at all. Not even the slightest. Screen is fine for me in daylight at only 75% and its been sunny as hell here in Co. Audio output is great for me too. I use SD-9HD and they are loud. I have to turn it all the way up and then down 2 times so it doesn't stress the speakers. Phone getting hot has never been an issue and here in CO its been 90s for the past two weeks. As for the screen, you guys must have stuff in your pocket that super Sharp because I have coins and screws(I'm a copier technician) in my pocket with my phone and no scratches. Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know.

I've got the GPS issue. But it's a minor squabble in an otherwise great phone.

I'm a hardcore audio guy, and I'm very pleased with the OGP. Like most other flagship Android phones, the Pro supports USB audio. If you think the stock headphone jack on phone X sounds good, try listening to a high end portable DAC/Amp combo. I realize very few people are willing to carry an extra device around just for sound. But for the most audio obsessed of us, it's the only way. Built in speaker and headphone jack quality are essentially irrelevant.

I don't currently have a cable to allow that. It hasn't been an issue for me though, even when I was using a GS3. But there are cables out there that accommodate USB audio and simultaneous charging. My experience so far after using it for 1 day
1) Camera quality: Its good at this price range the clarity is amazing as well as the sharpness front is also great(think about the price first before commenting in negative)
2) Video recording and playback: Video recording quality is really amazing it has capability to record in 1080x1920 and while playing any videos i has great viewing angles
3) Performance: So far i haven't faced any sort of lags i am using this device heavily and my multi task is loaded with full of apps still no lag
4) Battery: To be honest i am really happy with the battery performance i don't know about others, using with full brightness wifi on and continuously downloading and i charged only yesterday to 100% and till now it drops to 69% so i don't think battery will be an issue for people
5) Benchmarks: Got above 32000 score in Antutu,55 fps in Nenamark had tried only these two
6) Gaming: Played asphalt 8, modern combat 5 walking dead season 2 grand theft auto san andreas all on high graphics haven't found any lag apart from a little frame drop in san andreas rest totally amazing gaming experience
7) Storage: All installed application and apps data got downloaded in internal storage which is 16gb but we can move them in the external storage apart from the game data.
8) Call quality: Calling experience was great no issue so far
9) Heating issue: Not much only minor heating issue if paying heavy games rest no major heating issue
10) Audio: The only thing which disappoint me is the audio quality as the ring tone for incoming call and audio video plaback from the speakers is low,it might create some problem for some people, and rest from the headset it will damage your ear be careful
Conclusion: BEFORE COMMENTING IN NEGATIVE DO CHECK THE PRICE AND WHAT THIS DEVICE OFFERS WHICH HAS THE CAPABILITY TO COMPETE WITH HTC OPO AND OTHER MOBILE AT ABOVE 20000 RUPEES
Thanks 4 ur Review.

Salcykhan, You're just describing too much! Internal Speaker is so loud that you can hear it from far in a quiet room... Camera Quality is good, Low Light Pics are great, at least Look at its price. Screen is clear, 1280x720 is good for playing HD games... Might be problem in your Handset...
I haven't experienced any bug yet, the Double tap Wake up is all working Fine...
And even if there's a bug, Man! There's a software update option. Looks Like you forgot...
Regards
N'ayam
I faced a few software problems like the lockscreen wallpaper changes to default, even after setting Swiftkey as the default keyboard and using it for some time it chages back to default
and also the phone charges upto 99% but never to 100% I found that if we remove the cable and plug it again it shows 100%.
Some said photosphere works once. but on second time they need to force stop and clear data for google camera,
Then it takes them .. also only 1A charger for 615 device so itz taking 3 hrs to charge
proxy issue with scratch guard.. some one said to tighten screw below proxy sensor
52.C . Temp while gaming for 30 min.
i'm hearing a lot abt this device ? are these true

Some problems that u r not facing..........you have written.....what are u trying to prove ? The other problems that u have written............I never faced........I'm also using yureka for last 8 days.........

or may be galaxy note 4 at this price... wait for 4 more years
yup, the low light photography is grainy, but video recording & pics taken on gud lighting is excellent. sharp & focused.
Can't find any issues with screen clarity for a 720p screen. It has gud color reproduction & tonality.
The biggest issue is ext. speaker. Jeez, tht just muffled. Can barely hear anything well even on full volume in a low crowded room.
The earphones i got had decent quality, loud & punchy... no issues there. Call quality also good, the speaker sounds gud & can hear the conversation well even on mid volume settings.
Gaming with high end games was mostly lag free, the fone heats up considerably (but manageable) during extended gaming & camera usage, but thn which fone doesn't?

Rooting does not increase the volume. After rooting you can have access to the system files where you can make some changes that increases the ringtone volumes to acceptable levels.
