4G Icon - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

This may be normal, but it somewhat surprised me. I live in South Dakota and have limited TMo coverage. I was in Madison today, and pulled out my phone, only to see that it was showing the 4G icon. I'm on the value plan and I was roaming on AT&T. I looked around in the network settings, and it was showing GSM\WCDMA. Data speeds seemed low, and I did not have time to run a Speedtest. I think the icon must have been misleading. Our area does show 'fake' 4G for AT&T (HSPA+), but roaming on that should only give me 2G at best.

Ubergizmo on Nokia Lumia 900 4G/3G/Edge switch

Has anyone else found the following web site with instructions on setting up a 4G/3G/Edge switch on the Web
(Do a search to find the link)
I tired it and was able to get the switch, but I have not been able to try it on 4G(LTE) yet as I do not have LTE reception where I live and only have 3G (the phone says 4G, but I know it is 3G+) but will try it at work tomorrow where I can actually get LTE.
But one thing I noticed is that I cannot get EDGE service where I live. I heard that AT&T wanted to get rid of 2G (EDGE). Have they done that already?

Im not sure what you mean about trying it on 4G... the only choices are 4G (LTE) 3G or edge so you get one of the 3.
In my LTE market when I choose 4G I get LTE.

On AT&T, there are 4 types of data. 2G/EDGE, 3G, "4G"/3G+/HSPA+ and LTE.
We all know about 2g and 3g, but many people like you don't know about the difference between "4g" and LTE.
This whole thing was started by T-Mobile, because this was the early days of LTE, and Sprint was advertising it's WiMax network as 4G, T-Mobile decided to use a technology called HSPA+ and brand it as 4G. Initially, AT&T scolded T-Mobile for this move, but as soon as it was decided HSPA+ could be considered 4G, AT&T rapidly built up a network of this, almost as large as their 3G network.
HSPA+ is basically a faster version of 3G, hence why it's often called 3G+. However, AT&T tries to advertise it as 4G so they can boast they have the largest 4G network, even though Verizon leads the charge with the most LTE sites. HSPA+ is a bit faster than 3G, but doesn't hold a candle to LTE. However, it does have it advantages, such as being compatible on the iPhone 4S, and unlike Verizon, on AT&T, if you loose LTE coverage, you can fall back on HSPA+, where as on Verizon you fall back on their CDMA network (Which is still slower than AT&T's GSM network).
So over all it's good and leads to faster overall experience, unless of course you're in LTE coverage 24/7, then it doesn't matter that much. My (and others) only problem with this is AT&T branding it as 4G, which tricks consumers.
These days, both AT&T and T-Mobile branded devices display "4G" for *any* UMTS connectivity, instead of 3G/H.
It's lame.
My 900 has this switch in the settings without the need for any hacks
you hit #data# and then hit the ... button at the bottom and set up the toggle between speeds. Then restart the device, go under settings>cellular> select data speed.
With this device's data speed selection, 2G= edge, 3g= HSPA+/UTMS, 4G= LTE. Eventhough ATT modified the registry so that UTMS shows 4G at the top of the device, when you select 3G in the speed selection, you are only making the phone connect to HSPA+/UTMS

Hey, they stole my article that I originally posted on Mobility Digest. (www.mobilitydigest.com). They even took my screen shot. I purposely took that shot when my phone was showing "G". Oh well. Btw, it does work.

[Q] How do I know I'm on 4G?

I'm in Chicago (both in the city and suburbs), and my S3 always shows "3G" in the notification area.
I know AT&T has an LTE network here, so shouldn't it say 4G or LTE? Could this be a problem with my account--or even the phone?
Thanks.
somewhere in the settings should be a network selection to choose between GSM/LTE(4G) and GSM(3G) only....at least on the Verizon phones there usually is, of course it says CDMA/LTE(4G) or CDMA(3G) only

I have ATT GS3 and it says 4GLTE tiny icon, if you are sure you are in LTE zone and only getting 3g , call AT&T or go to their store , sim could be old/wrong and or your account was not properly activated.
When i got my GS3 i wasnt getting any data at all , called AT&T and they sorted it out.
Run speedtest see what you getting ?
I have at&t in chicago as well. I live up in lake county and work in des plaines. I was also at navy pier a few weeks ago. Never had anything other than 4g or LTE. I literally have never seen the 3g icon on my phone

Thanks for the replies. I'll give AT&T a call.
I did run speedtest, while the phone was displaying 3G. the download speed was 7686 and upload 5704.
Well, I called AT&T and they couldn't find any problem. After 20 minutes, they said, "There's a network outage reported in Chicago, so that must be it." I asked how long the outage has lasted, and she said 17 hours. But I've had the phone for four days, and have never seen anything but 3G.
At any rate, they said I would have to call back in a couple of days. That conveniently got the rep off the phone.
I live in a 3G area, and it says 4G on my phone. Makes me feel like they are BSing us to believe 4G is everywhere.
Only time it has been off of 4G is when I"m in an Edge area. Speaking of which, I found it interesting that while driving up I90 in Wyoming (didn't look like anything was there for miles and miles), the data speeds were great. I was so surprised. Driving the much busier highways in the midwest, it is Edge, and it sucks.
Sorry...went off topic.

Your account does need to be flagged as LTE or you won't get LTE service. I'm up in Gurnee and all over Chicagoland has pretty good LTE coverage.
Also, check your APN that you're on the "PTA" and not the older APN settings. If you see anything about cingular wap, you're on the old one.
I recommend going to an AT&T store, it's harder to blow you off when you're up in their face.
I have friends in Aurora, Lombard, Lyons and I used to work downtown; I always had great LTE signal out and about as well as my home area of Gurnee/Libertyville.
Lastly, AT&T distinguishes between "4G" which is HSPA+ and "4G LTE" which is their LTE network. Unless you're running a custom ROM with different icons, you'll have an E for edge (2.5G, total ****), 3G for a 3G area that hasn't been upgraded, 4G for a 3G area that's been "backhaul upgraded" to HSPA+ and 4G with a little LTE beneath it for an LTE area.
For me, I can tell speed-wise between "4G" and "4G LTE" mostly by the upload speed. HSPA+ (4G) I never see above 1.2Mbps or so, whereas on LTE I get up to 5Mbps roughly. Sad story is the LTE network in the Chicago area is the slowest of their LTE networks that I've seen anyway. I get so jealous of people in TX and whatnot that get like 24Mbps!
Sorry for the rambling...
One weird thing...when I click on my results in speedtest, it lists the network as LTE, even though the icon always shows 3G.
So maybe it's connecting to LTE, but not showing the correct icon? Does a download speed of 7686 seem faster than 3G?
To follow up, in case this helps anyone...
I spent another half hour on the phone with AT&T--level 1 and level 2 tech support. (The level 2 guy was much less informed than the level 1 woman.) Their bottom line was that I should exchange the phone.
However, when I use the network signal info app, it says I'm on the LTE network. So, I think I have an icon problem, not an actual network connection problem.
I think I'll just live with it, rather than exchange the phone.

[Q] Only can get H and H+ on T-mobile with US version of Find 7a

Hmm, those match my settings and I am getting LTE. Dumb question, but have you restarted? I noticed my phone can get kinda quirky when switching between APN's, or if the data gets turned off by another app for some dumb reason or another.
I have a feeling there is a little more tweaking to do to the modem from Oppo...

I was uunclear about H+, have just been looking up info....Was on Verizon, a GSM newbee here
However, I am seeing very slow speeds on HSPA+ and HSP...not even seeing much of a difference in speeds between the two on my device.
between them. Averaging 0.6 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps down, and 0.8 mbps to 1.3 Mbps up, even though T-mobile tech support claims I have excellent 4g coverage in my area. Is this most likely hardware?
Also, on my roadtrip yesterday to Medford, I was capping off at around 10 Mbps on LTE at the most, which seems a ,ittle slow for LTE.

Sometimes your coverage can be solid but the backhaul (connection between towers and the Internet) can be awful. AT&T's local reps even told me that the local LTE isn't going to be particularly good for a while until they upgrade the backhaul to the towers.
Your HSPA+ speeds seem low, but that's in comparison with my AT&T experiences. I might try doing a speedtest comparison of LTE between my Nexus 5 and my Find 7a if I can.
I was reading the pocketnow review and they had trouble getting the phone to work on AT&T and T-mobile in the US. Does this phone even support T-Mobile LTE bands? In most areas T-Mobile has their LTE on the AWS band.

GPRS Setting for LTE works for Me
I was having problems connecting to data, calls no problem (OPPO FIND 7 USA).
Anyway, the automatic APN settings weren't right for me,I had to manually set the APN Protocol setting to IPV4 (wasn't set, reading Not Set) & it finally connected to 4G LTE.
Here's the strange part:
The APN Name (On OPPO FIND 7,USA Model) is T-Mobile GPRS NOT T-Mobile LTE.
If I changed the name,it wouldn't connect to data at all.
From best I can tell via web search, GPRS is synonymous with 2G,however,I have 4G LTE when this APN Name is used.
I've seen others having a hard time connecting to the network & seems this bug arose in the latest update.
Anyway,my settings are identical to those in the pics in the OP EXCEPT the very 1st line, the APN Name.
Where I'm at right now is notorious for a weak signal due to building/equipment interference, however,I'm picking up an excellent signal (-90 to -80dBm / 53asu) on LTE:13
Have you tried to turn on LTE 4G by going in the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* phone information and set preferred network as LTE only ?

Yes.
As it is now,w/the APN Name as T-Mobile GPRS & in the hidden menu, changing the preferred network to LTE has no effect,it stays connected to LTE & everything below that which is available in my area.
I just left it as UNKNOWN.
I tried changing the APN Name to T-Mobile LTE & it immediately disconnects, regardless of any other changes in the hidden menus.
As the phone senses/sets-up Auto APN,the only apparent thing that is omitted is the APN Protocol setting, which by default on my phone & SIM Card registered Not Set.
Changing that value to IPV4 (from Not Set) is what made the difference.
Perhaps this quirk has something to do with 2G in my area having been replaced/upgraded to 4G & 4G LTE & the phone doesn't sense the difference/recognize the difference but in name only, but, accepts the 4G/LTE Connection.
Not knowing all things network/etc..,this seems like a possible explanation.
All I know is that I have an excellent connection & fast speeds w/browsing/etc.....
I don't care what the phone calls it,or sees it as,success is success.
I've seen stranger things than this........
I have since replaced my SIM CARD & had no problems connecting to T-MOBILE's 4G LTE,no modification of the APN was needed.
However, this is while flashed to CYANOGENMOD 11 nightlies, have no idea if the previous issues would pop-up if running the stock COLOR 1.2.4i O/S.
I have had issues with T-mobile LTE. Played around with all the settings. Deleted the APN and created a new one, etc. It works now, but I didn't do anything special, it started working randomly a day or 2 later
Strangely enough I'm having the same problem getting 3g with Virgin (EE/TMobile) in the UK
It can take a while for LTE to provision after setting up the APN. Set it and let it try for about an hour.
APN
The APN setting should have no effect on this.
You have 2 different fields when you type *#*#4636#*#*, gsm service and gprs service. If gsm service does not show "in service", you can use any APN in the world and it still won't work.

[Q] 3G faster than LTE.... why

I dont believe this only pertains to LG G3 but ill ask anyways....
Im asking this question as I sit in downtown San Jose (Less than 10 miles from Silicon Valley)...
Im running a hotspot and for some reason when I switch my "Preffered network type" from LTE to 3G ITS ACTUALLY FASTER....
For some reason "LTE" is getting between .2 and .7mbps while when I switch to 3G preffered it gets right around 3-5mbps...
I was under the impression if you leave it on LTE it should account for 3g as well?

same here, once in a while my 4g will get slow on certain areas where I live and when I switch to 3g it's faster too. Don't know what it is tho
Well, that's a good question.
It's because it depends on where ''YOU"' are
If the ''location' you are in is closer to ''4g towers'' then your 4g speeds/LTE speeds will be much faster. However, if you are closer to 3g towers and further away from 4g towers, you can still receive ''4g signal/network"' But the speeds won't be the same, because it has to send and receive data on low bars/low signal..... So really it all matters and depends... Where you are, where the towers are and what carrier you're using.

4G vs LTE?

I just got my H815 and I went to Cricket and when I left she had turned on Mobile Data which is good but I had an 'H', so I turn the Network mode to LTE Auto, top option, and it now says 4G, but I thought that it needs to say LTE for top speeds?
I remembered seeing LTE somewhere, but I can't find it again.
So even though it says 4G, am I getting LTE or? The APN seems to be set up correctly.. so?

It will automatically switch to 4G/4G+ mode when the signal is good enough (=LTE, but the display will show 4G or 4G+ for LTE Advanced). If you have "H" or "H+" shown it's because the 4G signal is bad in your area and would probably be slower than a good H/H+ reception
I concur. International unlocked models (like mine) still show 4G, even when you set everything up correctly. Rest assured, you ARE getting LTE, it just doesn't say so on the screen.
As long as your completely sure.... Where can I go to check my signal strength and check my speeds?
I'm only getting 2/5 bars... that's not good..
The signal strength can be checked via Settings -> System -> About phone -> Network. It will show you the mobile network type and signal strength.
As said before the LG G4 will not show "LTE" as icon, but only 4G and 4G+. Also unfortunately there is no option to set it to "LTE" only. Just only "GSM" and only "WDCMA" (at least for my H815 Euro)
See this pic and envy my signal
My Mobile Network Type shows LTE, but right now it's 4G , so I guess when I'm in a better spot, I"ll get 4G+ which is LTE... But as of now I'm only getting 4G because of my signal strength? Which that is -112 28asu.

Dude, ill explain again, 4G and LTE is the same thing, it's just that every manufacturer might show a different name/icon on it's ROM, the G4 uses the "4G" and "4G+" icons. Some Samsung phones show LTE / LTE+ etc.
Its the same thing Which one you get depends on the backend technology, it's not said that every LTE backend also supports LTE Advanced, even if you are next to it-
Alright, I'll see how it performs. what are usually 4G speeds?
On cricket, 4G speed is 4mbps and their LTE is 8mbps. Not the speeds of AT&T, but we pay half the price so I take the slower speeds. Plenty fast enough for me.

For us picky folk (I'm one that wants to *see* the LTE icon) after root, what can we change the build.prop to to show the LTE on the H815? I know on AT&T branded phones, you add klteatt to the build.prop. Would it be the same to get that icon?
I dont think its that easy, im not sure but if the actual picture are not in the rom its not enough to change some config file, then you would have to replace the pictures in the apk containing them (that would be the easiest way). I personally like the 4G more though, since it scales better than 3 letters and is more readable

This is defined in systemui/values/bools. If <bool name="config_show4GForLTE">false</bool> then it shows the LTE icon. If it is true it shows 4G. As ktwo said in matter of speed these refer to the same network, same speed. There are some confusing infos here around...
