[Q] Questions regarding hboot and roms - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My first question is if I have rooted using unrevoked can I still install hboots found from alpharev?
If I change hboots to one with more of a data partition will I get more space on my internal storage to install apps because we all know that the internal storage on the desire is very low and I can't install many apps. I have once or twice made sd-ext partitions and moved stuff over but it was too slow for me even using a class 10 card (and it seems a little complicated how to move over certain things).
Is there an hboot that isn't stock but acts as a stock hboot and allows me to install ROMs that will only work using stock hboot?
Which hboot and ROM would you recommend that will give me good space for internal storage to install apps? (I prefer simple, normal ones like cm. I have been using paranoid.)
Thanks in advance

Sooo... you have to be s-off to change hboot. Try revolutionary.
If the data partition is larger, then the more apps you can install.
You can use sd-ext to only keep your dalvik cache there. You won't notice performance issues.
I recommend cm7r2 hboot with an AOSP rom, like cm7 based roms, oxygen. I'm currently using redux. Try it.

You can find every HBOOT from apharev website.
There is a cell sheet wich show you different hboot and his specificities. So you can choose the best for your use

data2ext and not enough space to install apps

I've just updated my RCMixHD 3.5++, wiping up everything, to 3.6 without the data++ with data2ext and I was wondering why it seems like I can't install anything when I get to having 342MB of free space, I've been trying like mad wiping up and reflashing.
has anybody an idea on what I can do?
UPDATE: it seems I can push the installations through adb with success...
anybody an idea? could it be the latest Market version breaking something?
it's quite IMPOSSIBLE to get all the APKs I could want from market or anything outside it without having the Market app working...
Is your phone saying it has free space but still cannot install the apps?
i have this same. info screen says i have a lot of space and when i try to install something i become warning screen that say, i don't have enought space
Cm7 partition image??

I reflashed and having 330MB free it says it cannot download, fixing permissions via recovery doesn't do much...
When you installed RCMixHD 3.5 D++ did you install the cm7 hboot which is recommended for this rom? If you did, before you install D2EXT rom, you need to revert your hboot back to Bravo stock for it to work correctly!

When I installed RCMixHD++ I didn't install che cm7 hboot (namely it was said that having s-offed with AlphaRev could be enough), so I think that now that I have the 3.6 without the ++ I could just wipe everything and flash it. Maybe it's just a problem of the missing Vending.apk and patching.
s-off itself doesnt give you anything in terms of space
but it allows you to change your hboot (partiton layout) so you can have more space for apps. so if you didnt do cm7 partitions and installed data++ rom... well the point of data++ roms is to have cm7 partitions layout...

now I don't have the ++ version anymore, so you're missing the point: I now have the 3.6 with data2ext, no ++, no different layout needed, still I can't download apps but I can push them with "adb install"

[Q] RCMixS ROM: CM7 Hboot vs. Bravo Hboot?

Complete n00b here so please be easy with me...
I tried to search and read around but it is all quite confusing, so I thought just to ask like this.
I have a stock unlocked Desire at the moment. I want to root it, do whatever other things are needed, and flash it with RCMixS ROM.
Is it better to go with CM7 A2SD Hboot or Bravo A2SD+ Hboot version of the ROM?
I mean, I can read the advantages or disadvantages of each version, but what version is better to go with in normal usage?
Since I am stock I can and will have to do all the steps that are needed. Just want to know which direction is best...
Do I need to flash a different radio? Which ROM manager is recommended?
Avoid rom manager. With bravo hboot all the system files go on the system partition but because of the lack if space for apps, you use your sd card instead. With the cm7 hboot you have less space to install system files and so the system apps will get installed onto the sd card but the apps get put onto memory since there is double the normal amount. That's the difference so up to you really.
Swyped...
diffrence in use ?
cm7 hboot will be waaaaay faster, since your apk's will run from NAND rather than from sd-ext as in normal hboot.
and dont get 'which rom manager is recommended' part
rom mangaer is an android app, an UI of clockworkmod recovery. its basically useless, as clockwork mod has super easy UI, you just need to boot into it.
no need to touch radio, do it only if you have problems with signal, wifi, data etc.
tried both, cm7 version is a little bit faster...at least on my desire...
Thanks!
Sorry, I meant which recovery, not rom manager... I see there's Amon Ra and CWM.
CM7 hboot sounds better and faster. I think I'll go with it then...
Just wondering - how come some people (or quite a few) choose then to stay with original bravo hboot if the CM7 is faster and offers more phone memory? Is it only because of hassle of doing S-off or is there something else?
If you're a n00b I wouldn't be looking to S-OFF yet. Give the Bravo HBOOT version a blast, I'm using it and it's plenty fast enough and using A2SD+ means you still have loadsa space for apps
I use Cm7 Hboot, I think it's a little bit faster than the Stock Hboot, if you want change Hboot, download it [URL="http://alpharev.nl" Here [/URL] and use Android Flasher

same as rooting, doing s-off is a potential way of bricking device
so thats why not everyone is willing to risk.
cwm or amonRA - no diffrence here, amonRA is supposed to be more advanced, but you can do just about anything with cwm. just remember to use latest versions
I'm tempted to change over from stock hboot to cm7. I'm s-off already, using RCMix S v2. My SD card is partitioned for stock hboot version of the rom. Will I need to repartition it? Thanks in advance.
To note on recovery, if your device is PVT4 you need to use RA not clockwork.
You can check PVT version at the top of your bootloader screen.
so this means i cant flash my hboot to hboot cm7 without bricking or what , (im a noob )?
bravo pvt4 ship s-off
hboot 0.93.0001
I used until today the Bravo HBOOT.
Today I went to CM7.
I can't say which one is faster.
I think booth have advantages and disadvantages.
Anyway one thing is certain and this is that all of us must say thanks to all the developers who are struggling to give us the very best of the new goodies that are coming out each day.
I don't known changelog in new ROM CyanogenMod7
after installing this rom is it normal that i can no longer manually boot into recovery (hold volume down & press power)? i can only access it through rom manager.
I used this rom stock version about 3 weeks, recently i changed in CM7 hboot and it has no more little lags! i can assure it works perfectly now, it's a real pleasure now
@shinyazz52 no it's not normale, i suggested to wipe all and reflash rom.
Agreed! CM7 is much faster for me

[Q] Only CM7 on my Desire, no other.. Why?

Hello everybody, i have a question for you all.. My problem: I have a s-off Desire with Alpharev CM7, CWM Recovery 4.0.0.5 and latest radio on it. I have tried to install many, MANY roms, but all, except 2, have the same problem.. After installation from the recovery, i only see the joker face from Alpharev, and nothing more. AceSMod007, RcMixHD, VillainRom and many more.. The only 2 exceptions are MIUI, that comes to its own bootscreen, but looping and no boot, and CyanogenMod, that works great. Why that? I have tried to install Hboot Sense, Hboot stock, but nothing.. Anyone should help me please? Many thanks, regards
have you partioned you sd, if not make an ext partition of 1GB with Gparted
If you are using cm7 hboot try upgrading to cm7r2 hboot from alpharev.nl as the roms mentioned require it.

Yes both with ext3 (by cmw) and ext4.. hboot r2 but others too
Are you doing a full wipe before flashing the rom? This is needed when switching roms.
Only use cm7 hboot if your using cm7 or a rom that was designed to use that hboot. Otherwise stick with stock unless specifically required by the new rom untill you got it working.
If not maybe your recovery is messed up, try a different version.
Back up your sd and use 4EXT recovery to start from strach. Create aligned partitions with this recovery. Mostly, the boot loops happen when hboot is too small for the rom or ext partition(s) is broken or not aligned. Also you can fix your partition with e2fsck.
Try InsertCoin CM7, and do everything what is said above, should be fine then

maybe that is.. I have installed alpharev stock hboot and reflashed original RUU, tomorrow i will try to root my phone again..
PS. with others Alpharev hboot, RUU won't upload, so, if you need to flash a RUU, is important that you install STOCK ALPHABOOT

[Q] Desire bootloop with new ROM

I'm trying to install a new ROM for a friend (first time I use a Desire) and whenever I try to install a Sense 3.5 ROM (Cool3D Sense 3.5 or BlissMod007 for example), I end in a bootloop. CyanogenMod 7, however, works perfectly fine.
So far:
Flashed newest radio.
Flashed newest RIL.
Flashed cm7r2 Hboot.
Flashed 4EXT 2.2.7 RC5 recovery.
Now what do I do to make the phone work with these ROMs?
What EXT partition did you put on SD card? Did you flash the Right version for CM7 Hboot.

1. Don't know?
2. I used the Bravo CM7r2 on alpharev's site.
1) Ok well these roms are very big. Even with standard Hboot, sometimes there is not enough space so some of the ROM is shipped out to SD-EXT, a partition on SD card that you need to create
2) No, I mean these big roms have a stock version and a CM hboot version. Each version only works on the hboot it was intended for.

1. How would I go about creating that partition?
2. Oh, like that. Ye, I made sure to get the versions intended for cm7r2. Seeing as I haven't made SD-EXT, I doubt this is the problem.
The best way is a little long winded. Suffice to say you need to use Gparted. This you can either burn to CD and boot from it, make a bootable USB disk to run it or create a virtual server within windows and use it that way.
The last option I recommend to use VMware, I have a tutorial in my signature for this.

Followed your advice (although I used VirtualBox) and everything worked on first try. Made the partition 768 MB since most ROMs said 512+. I appreciate the quick answers.

[Q] about cm7r2

Hello I haven't undrestand something about s-off .
My desire is s-off with Hboot 0.93.0001 do i have to do something to go to cm7r2 or I am ok as it is (since it is s-off)?
Well you are okay as it is but if you wanna get more space for your apps then you may wanna go with cm7r2 so that your partiton allocation of your phone's internal memory is changed and used more efficiently.
Details on how to get cm7r2 is on alpharev.nl

Also, bear in mind that with CM7r2 hboot, you will have to download a Rom compatible with CM7r2. The stock Rom or any roms that requires more than 145mb on the system partition will not be compatible and will cause the phone to bootloop.

Little correction: If one flashes a rom which doesn't not fit in /system, one will stuck at splash screen and not in a bootloop.
maximum cm7r2 partition
Hi - i want to Flash the Runnymede 4.0.3. does it only support a max. 2gb partition? cause when i make a 4gb partition it doesnt work with ap2sdx
Please read the requirements in the rom's thread. Also search the thread. Then all your questions should be answered.

This happened to me when I was trying to install Runnymede (and I wanted the A2SD+, for which I believe you need CM7r2). I was running stock ROM and couldn't get back into it to run 4ext.
Does that mean I was doing it in the wrong order? Do I need to run 4ext first to prepare everything, then flash the hboot, then flash the ROM from recovery?

Yes. CM7r2 is too small for the stock rom to be used. And you can reboot into 4ext by pressing the volume down and power button at the same time, navigate to recovery with the volume button and confirm selection with power button. There just wipe everything and flash your rom.
