slowed data speed - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi i am having this problem my download speed is extremly slow 0.35 MB but my upload is better 1.56 MB. I tested my sim card on 4 different phones giving me the exact same result slow download speed can't be coincidence. I tested the sim card from those phones on my phone and they we're awesome 8 MB to 10 MB on the same place. Is not my phone cause I made the test so I replaced my sim card bought a new one $20 and no luck still the same slow download speeds. I have the new Unlimited Nationwide 4G data plan so I can't be throttled. What can be causing this I am kinda upset with this called and went to costumer service several times and all they say is ''everything is ok on your account''. No something is not ok. If somebody could help me with this I will appreciate your help thanks

I've been getting intermittent speeds. I'm also on the unlimited 4G plan. I don't know what's going on. It has been happening to me for about a week now.

Well, initially I was thinking that maybe you were throttled for taking over what type unlimited plan allocates to you...but I imagine that they would have told you when you called their customer service line. So...with that being said, I suggest you go into any t-mobile store (assuming that you're on t-mobile) and request a new SIM card. I'm guessing that your card is just beginning to go bad...it does happen occasionally. Getting a new one is free, the last time that i checked...so it's worth a shot.
Good luck!

I posted a thread similiar to this thinking i was getting throttled. I called Tmo and they reset my phone onto their network and that did the trick.
But also remember, data speeds will be inconnsistent due to the number of users on the network

That's great and how is called the process they did? You know resetting your phone on there network or I have to tell them to do it ?

I just called and had them do it as well, seems to have fixed it.

I will try that to see if it fixes my problem thank you for all your answers

We have an ongoing issue with our data speed as well. We have always received crappy data speeds no matter where we are. We just thought is was the way it was. However we are seeing on all our lines less than 1Mb/s speeds no matter where we test. This inlcudes 4g areas 100s of miles from our home and in several other cities.
Our issue was supposed to be escalated to an engineering team 3 days ago but i suspect from the cut and paste response we received that they haven't even checked on it. "Upon checking, we already received a feedback from our engineering department for the service request that was forwarded to them last 10/25/2012 and the result of their investigation is that the coverage in your area is less than what you're expecting to have."

Has at&t turned off the 3g for att legacy customers (pre-cingular)?

I have an 8525 using an "old blue sim". I have been having problems connecting with the 3g network. "There is a problem connecting to the GPRS service in the roaming network you are in." I am able to make voice calls on the utms network, but I am unable to make a data connection.
I thought my phone had a problem, but I think it is ok. I have no problems connecting to the Edge signal just 3g. I have flashed my phone reflashed the roms and radio..
Is any one else having this problem?
I did call at&t and ask for help, but they would not even talk to me because they say they are not supporting "old blue" and I need to migrate to a new plan/sim.
This started about a month ago. I am not sure if flashing a rom maybe corrupted the radio?
Does this mean anything. Taken from the Hyper Core thread.
@PaY87
Yup, UMTS is one of the Third Generation (3G) mobile systems. I use Hypercore Kitchen, but I've removed the .rgu files from this rom so it won't be easy to rebuild it.
Anyone with an "old blue" sim still working on the 3g network?

Scott, when I got my 8525 I was told I had to upgrade my sim to a 3G sim. I did and have had no problems since.
Jim
I was told they will not change my sim unless I change plans and migrate over to the new at&t. I have a great plan. I pay about 90.00 a month for two phones 1550 anytime minutes nights/weekends start at 7 and a unlimited mmode data plan on one phone. They had a great promotion at the time and I don't want to lose it.

Unfortunatly for you the only way to change your SIM is to do what you said they said above. I have a friend that works at AT&T and he was tellign me about that not to long ago.
Just another Corporate manuever to capitalize gains within large companies, thats America for you
There are some great deals going on withen AT&T now and I'm sure If you talk to the right people (Store Managers, Customer Service Supervisors) they would set you up with a nice plan. don't upgrade the normal way, make sure you talk to someone and BE AGRESSIVE!!!

Analog bids Adieu
Yesterday, December 26, 2007, 5:17:26 PM | Joshua Karp
2008 is going to be a sad year for anyone that still remembers the early days of mobile technology. Not only is the TDMA band, currently the massive monkey on AT&T’s back, set to go black, but it looks like the old school analog cellular network will also be put to rest. Analog has remained in use primarily due to its presence in rural areas that have yet to reap the benefits of the "shiny new" digital network. With the seemingly exponential increase in signal penetration by America’s wireless carriers, however, it seems that the analog bands have run their course. Fewer than 1% of phones currently in use are functioning on the analog network, but if you suspect that your handset might be one of them now would be a good time to check. As many as 500,000 GM On-Star-equipped vehicles will also be affected.

Thanks. I never thought of that maybe I will give it a try today. You just went into a store and asked for a replacement sim paid 26 bucks and your 3g has been working with on "old blue" account?
Thanks
Scott
I too have a similar issue.
I am using a 3G sim card and have an 8525 but don't have the data connect plan. Instead since I bought the phone outright I went into the store and added the Media Net unlimited Plan. Worked flawlessly on the 3G network this past year then all of sudden last week I noticed it will only connect at EDGE. Maybe there catching on to this not sure but it seems interesting all of a sudden.
O.k. sorry for the detour back to your subject. I actually had the older sim card like you earlier this year and bought one of of eBay to upgrade. They were about half the price on there as Cingy store. Then just take in to any AT&T store and they can swap your sims, at least it could be done in the past.
Good luck.
I went to two at&t stores today. I asked if I could have a replacement sim. No problem untill they looked at my account. It had "old blue" written all over it. Both stores said that they were unable to give me a new sim. One guy even showed me the computer screen. The only link that worked on the whole page was the UPGRADE button. They could not even change it even if he wanted to. He also said he has not seen an "old blue" account in about 2 years.
According to the salesman if you lose your sim they will not replace it. You will have to sign up for a new plan and contract.
It was a good idea thought it was going to work.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

They had a pile of 3g sims there. The sales guy even showed me on the computer he tried clicking on replacement sim and nothing would happen. He clicked over the whole screen the only link that worked was upgrade. Saw it with my own eyes. The sales guy thought that all of these sims or accounts have been closed for years.
Thanks for the offer.

Word yo, not much you can do with a Blue account. I work at an AT&T authorized retailer, and the only real option is upgrading.
One thing though, before you bite the bullet: I'm pretty sure you don't need a 3G sim to access 3G. Look over on Howard Forums (you might be better off asking this question there), but there are people even with old 32k and 64k sim's working just fine. But that doesn't mean AT&T isn't blocking it. See if you can use someone elses SIM card in the phone to connect to 3g (if it's a newer "Orange" card, make sure you have the correct internet settings).

The 3g service was working fine untill about week or so ago. I travel quite a bit to New York and it happened up there first. When I would get home to Ft.Lauderdale everything was fine up till about week ago. So the "old blue" would get 3g service but I am thinking this is not the case anymore.
The howard forums have a lot of information. I need to get some time and really go through and read their site. Thanks for the info I never been on that forum.
Anyone out there have a old blue sim that is still working on the 3g network?
Scott
According to my friend, it works fine. Do not upgrade unless you have to, and don't give up your grandfathered plan. IIRC, The type of sim does not control connection speed or method, but only access to the network overall.... That being said, if you do loose your old pre-cingular Blue sim, they will not give you a new one without a new plan, so don't loose it.
Further, ATT doesn't (currently) screen for tethering or use of PDA phones with data plans made for phones, so no worries there.
Just to give you a quick up date. I flew in from Boston today. My phone had no problems using 3g in up in Boston.
I guess now ATT has the abilty to turn off the 3G in certain areas for us old customers. I know for sure 3G does not work with my old blue in New York area and Ft.Lauderdale area, but worked fine up in Boston today.
So I am not even sure even if I was given a new "3G" sim that it would allow me access to the 3G network.
The fight continues for me trying to get a new sim without changing my plan.

Wipe data throttle info??? Somebody mentioned it... how to?

Ok... long story short, tmobile slowed my 4G the first month I got my G2 because I exceeded 5GB... that's BS if u ask me consider I pay for unlimitied... but its whatever. Next billing cycle rolls around, and my 4G is still at the pace of a snail. SpeedTest app is testing in @ a BLAZING speed of 0.03-0.05mbps with full 4G connection. Got a new sim, now they are sending me a new G2. Works for me ...
Anyway... they want my old G2 and I feel as though if they receive a phone all modded up they may say... "woah, he screwed his phone up himself..." so right now I'm rooted, s-off, running gingermex rom, updated radio and kernel... which was all easy to do... but getting back to stock seems a little more intricate. Maybe somebody knows what's wrong with my device since t-mobile is no longer slowing my speeds.. and yet they are still slow. Tried multiple radios, no success.. any input here on either matter will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

You don't need a new phone, you should have just wiped the throttle data and it would have been fine. Throttling is initiated on the PHONE side.

Usually on phone replacements they send you the new one and you ship back the old with attached packing slips. So if that's the case then they can't do much about it. They want the old one to refurbish and make an extra bit of change

They would void is warranty for future replacements.
Best thing to do is drop that phone in water for an hour than put it in the shipping package.
They said the main thing for me getting the g2 replaced was that everything worked, no damage.. so no water lol. I wanna know how to do the "wipe throttle data" that was previously mentioned.

How did you go over the 5GB data "cap?" Tethering? I've watched movies over Netflix with my laptop, but I've never been able to even get close to that 5GB. I use netcounter to keep track.
Also, I don't believe there is currently a working method.

Maybe the throttle folder is there simply because you have gone over in the past - they might not actually be throttling your data. I would recommend getting mobile signal widget and going to somewhere with HSPA+ data rates, and then doing several speed tests with various applications.
If you still have the issue, you probably should talk with customer service. If you can't get it resolved, I hate to say it, but you may want to switch carriers.
You could also try getting ahold of people on XDA that have worked on removing evidence of throttling on the phone side.
Good luck man! Sorry to hear you're still having the issue. This 5GB cap is ridiculous - they should not be able to call this "unlimited data."
I have honestly been considering switching carriers. I have already told them I will most likely cancel, and refuse to pay 200 to do so if I choose. Customer service has been completely wretched. I know it sounds kind of like a conspiracy or something, but I have called like 13 times today and maybe 8 of the calls were "dropped"... IMO they are hanging up on me because they can't provide any help! Numerous of the reps were supervisors, too! I have never had a problem with tmo and this is like bad... I can't understand them they all sound like the same indian woman changing her name every time she answers lol...
People are saying in older threads that this happens with the services.jar that is in root/system/framework... anybody have any more ideas? Relatively desperate..lol

Yes, they will detect it. If your dad is on a very old plan (maybe 3+ years since renewing the contract), he might be grandfathered in (meaning that he wouldn't be required to get a data plan for a smartphone, and they won't automatically assign one to him). This doesn't apply to most people though.
lol nope i have used his upgrades for myself. So i guess he is not grandfathered.
Might I ask what phone you are switching to?
either the one x or the galaxy s3. The nitro gets too hot, still has color banding issues, and the battery life is humbug.

All those things will be addressed once a stable version of CM9 is out with an undervolting kernel, but suit yourself. ;p
why would you want to give your dad a phone that overheats, has graphics issues and ****ty battery life?
He bought himself a HTC vivid, so I don't have to worry about giving him one that sucks...
Because in just about every metric, the HTC vivid is worse (comming as a person who does not like non fridge related LG products, here).

Not true, if they detect a smartphone on the network at all, they will attempt to put you on a data plan. Sometimes it's not immediate but it WILL happen.

Yeah, that might be the reason -- I don't have any idea which devices are in their list but it's very possible that T-Mobile phones will bypass the detection. The other possible reason is the one I mentioned earlier in this thread: if you are on a very old plan that didn't have the data requirement listed in the contract.

My mom had exact same situation when I gave her a HTC Inspire 4G, she went to another carrier simply because ATT would not allow her use a smart phone without data plan. Well, they tried to rip her off with $30 a month and at the end they simply lost a customer who payed $45 a month.
Good job ATT.
Someone is giving my wife an LG Nitro HD after she lost her Samsung Captivate. We currently have the $15/mo 200MB data plan, but when I was shopping for upgrades and looking at newer phones online it seemed like we had to switch to a newer, more expensive 4G data plan. If we get a new sim card from AT&T for my wife will it work in this phone? Will we be able to use it without changing her data plan?

I'd suggest calling up AT&T support or going into a local AT&T store to see if they can move your wife from the 200MB 3G data plan to the 200MB LTE data plan (same price - $15/mo). I think they will do it without any problem, but I'm not sure. It's worth a try at least.
I have taken a sim card out of a regular phone and put it into a smart phone and att never added a data plan to it. I had that for maybe a year. If you don't want to pay for data anymore take out your sim card and put it into an old phone and tell att that you sold the smartphone and are using the older phone now, then switch the sim card back without telling att, I've done that too. I can't say they won't force a data plan but this is just what i experienced

It depends on how recently you've signed a contract with AT&T. If you've signed a contract since they implemented the requirement for data plans on all smartphones, then they will automatically switch you to a data plan if you use a smartphone. If you haven't, they won't.
This was with an iPhone 4 when it first came out. I sold it and then but an old razor and they took the data plan off per my request. And did the same thing with my wife's phone but she got an older smart phone but they never turned a data LAN on for it automatically.

ATT S3 Data Problem (Having my cake and eating it, too)

Several years ago I got a unique data plan for an off-contract Xperia X1A phone from ATT. It was the unlimited data for 'smartphones' for $15. My phone was not recognized by their system and I got unlimited 3G data.
A year or so ago, my Xperia broke down and I got an HTC Vision off-contract with ATT's 3G networks. It worked well and immediately connected to 3G.
The screen recently broke and while I've ordered a replacement, I realized it was getting a little long in the tooth so I decided to get an S3 with no contract from Amazon Wireless.
I sliced down my Sim card into micro size and it fit (yay) and the phone service works...
But no data. Not even 3G.
Halp?
Have you updated your APN's for the phone? I dont know the ATT APN's off hand but Im sure you can google them and find them right away
Here's the apn from my Att s3
You probably need to use wap.cingular

Okay - now I see them and they are the same on this phone. Hmm.

Ah - however, I only seem to be getting 3G speeds, not LTE speeds. Ah, that's a fair compromise.
I don't know if att is the same as rogers in Canada but I had to get a new lte sim card which would suck for you. I hope they never take your plan away.

Best I can tell, LTE needs a plan change. If you try to swap SIM cards, it still won't work. Worse, they'd detect you trying to connect to LTE and they may slam you to one of the new plans. Ask me how I know.
It's up to you to decide whether LTE is worth the price increase. Nice to be able to choose.
If you're feeling charitable, either XDA or Cyanogen seem appropriate.

This is correct. If you start using a LTE phone and don't have a LTE plan, you'll start getting texts and emails from AT&T asking you to contact them so they can update your plan. They'll probably give you a new micro sim, as your old cut down sim isn't LTE enabled.

Well... today they actually did upgrade me to the 3gig/$30 data plan. I called them and told them I was going to stop using this phone, return it, and go back to my non-smartphone. They put me back on the old data plan - but I'm not sure for how long.
I'm waiting on my screen replacement for the HTC Vision to arrive, in which case I'll see if they try to force the upgrade again. If they DO, I will again tell them to put it back and send back my S3 and go back to the HTC Vision.
I wonder, though, if there is some way to prevent them from knowing it is a Galaxy S3. Mybe if I bought one from Telus or Bell? My HTC Vision was not released for ATT and I got it from some Canadian company with the same network settings, I think.
Besides, if they are going to FORCE me onto the plan, I may as well take a subsidized phone.

I walked into the store with my backup - a moto F3 - and told them I lost my old sim card and needed a microsim. The rep wanted to test that it worked so I asked for some tape and taped it into place. I told him that the phone was foreign and used a rare sim size but a micro could work with tape. They bought it.
So I got home and put the new micro into the S3 and no data using the ATT APN but 3G using the Cingular. So let's see if they try to switch me back again.
REally wish I could get LTE on my current plan. Hmm.
I'm increasingly unhappy with this phone, though, and may end up returning it anyway.

Done. $20 to Cyanogen. Too bad I couldn't earmark it to S3 development but nonetheless, I have been using their stuff for a while so a donation is in order.

Internet slowed to a crawl on T-Mobile...

I've had this phone for awhile now, I want to say since April and it's been fine for the most part besides 3 other bugs I've been meaning to post about on here, but I've gotten rock solid internet with an unlocked phone from Amazon on T-mobile with the stock Android, including through all updates to 4.4's most recent. It flies on LTE and HSPA+.
Out of nowhere yesterday my data slowed to a crawl. I Speed Test it and I'm getting literally 0.04MBS down and around the same up.
I'm not being throttled. Although stupidly through procrastination I'm still on a month to month from an old contract where I get unlimited but get throttled after 5gig's use, I'm literally only 2 days and maybe 100mb into my cycle and even when I'm throttled they keep me between 1 and 2 megs down.
I'm really unsure what has happened and would really appreciate if anyone could lend a helping hand here with suggestions or the outright known issue and fix.
Thanks,
Cliff

I've been pretty busy yesterday and today so I haven't even had a chance to call them yet, going to call tomorrow.
Maybe it's something as simple as a bad SIM Card?
Maybe I have to enter something into the settings under network?

Or a problem with the network which is why it's best to Phone them first.
