I'm specifically talking about the options at the top on Samsung Epic 4G Touch. I would love to root my phone and make it look like my previous HTC dialer, but I doubt that's even possible. Is there anyway to remove the top options (Ya know, keypad, logs, contacts, favorites)? I would just like the dialpad and nothing else. Thankyou.

I just use "Go Contacts"...it is the most like HTC's dialer. That is the only thing I miss from Sense, the dialer. It's also skinnable.
Yeah the dialer in Go Contacts is pretty good. The last time I installed it though, it seemed to have wakelocked my phone when I ignored an incoming call. At least I think it did it. I'm a battery hawk so I uninstalled first and asked questions later. Definitely give it a try though.

Thanks, I tried it and it looks really good! But I guess the next step I wanna take is replacing the dialer. It's Android, which mean Open Source, right? Meaning ANYTHING is changeable? I could replace it with any dialer by default right? And I'm not talking about when hitting the home button and clicking "set Go Contacts as default". I mean, really get rid of the dialer and replace it as if it came with stock. Does anyone think/know if this is possible?

If you're rooted, yeah. I mean, I wouldn't...just remove the stock dialer icon and put that one in it's place. It has a dialer...and without the stock dialer you can't use ##codes...and I love ##codes.
Is there an easy way to disable the Sense Message app? It does not let to disable it in the App Settings.
Thanks

Did you try to freeze it with Titanium backup ? But i dont understand why you want to disable it
Is it because....
.....you have installed another messaging app and you're getting multiple notifications?
Thanks for the reply. Titanium Backup cannot freeze it.
I want to disable it as I'm using a replacement app and whenever I receive a SMS I get it twice, once in both apps. The fix is to disable the stock message app, but I can't see how to do it

Hmm i am not sure about this app ... but you can disable notifications in the stock messaging app: open stock messenger --> settings --> notifications and there you can disable everything
Thanks again for the reply, but the notification isn't the problem. I get the message twice, in the both apps. So in both stock and the ICS Messaging I get the message twice.
I tried turning off notifications and it didn't help (worth a try though )

Oh, now i understand No, its not possible ... all the message apps are working on the base of the stock (i think), thats why you cant disable it.
You could try to set a wrong Service center number in the original app, and the right SCN in the one you will use give it a try and report back
There seems to be no way to set the SCN in the ICS app, so no go on that one. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll just have to go back to stock, no biggie

To be honest, i dont even know whats the difference between that two apps, the stock one looks great to ... the only thing why i use GoSMS is that you can block messages and set a private box, and theres no message/call blocker that can satisfy my needs for now ... i like the stock one more, but what can i do
You can't disable the sense message app but you can turn the notifications off if you go to SMS - settings - messages
i had the exact same problem, i just disabled notifications from the message apps settings and now i'm only getting one notification from ICS messenger
very happy !!
I just made the switch from the S2 to the Nexus, and love the phone minus two things...
I really dislike how the nexus doesnt start to search contacts when you start to dial there name or number... any way to flash the touchwiz phone app?
And the smiley face icon that pops up in the notifications and the stock messenger app icon are a REAL dislike, any way to use the touchwiz messenger app?
Hmmm... mine will pop up a contact as soon as you type in a couple of letters. You can also hit the microphone on the home screen and just say "call Mary" and it will do it.
Like if the person's name is sarah... on touchwiz you can start to type S A R
and it will filter the contacts and display the first couple that match, and when you continue to type it will narrow down the contacts... my nexus just displays the dialer

T9 Dialer.
You might find alternative dialers in the Market.
If not...custom roms have this option.
Ok yeah I was thinking that I might have to resort to flashing a custom rom..which i was going to do anyway
Do you by chance know if using the galaxy S3 launcher brings any of these features?
I know im going to get flamed for mention this, but i do like a FEW things from touchwiz such as the phone and icon... could you recomend any of the custom roms?
would there be a way to pull the apks from a 4.0.4 build of the s2 and use those apks?

i dont think so. they use the touchwiz framework, so you would need all the framework items too.

You need more than just the apks, you need all of the other touchwiz BS. And the launcher isn't going to bring the functionality either.
There's a S3 add on pack that might suit your fancy. I recommend flashing it on top of AOKP, it was buttery smooth with no problems for me.
Sent from someone's Galaxy Nexus running AOKP + Franco
Thanks! Ill check it out... Honestly in regards to the messaging icon, could i just change the icon for the stock apk?
Hi, I have update the my nuxus 4 to Kitkat(4.4) but I am very much disappointed with new dialer, Can any one have the old 4.3 dialer?? Please share me..
Thanks,
Bhaskar
+1, every time I try to swipe to awap screens it deletes my favorites.
Also need it for a friend...If i pull it from factory image will be working??

4.4 dialer sucks
That's why I went back to 4.3.
It really sux!
Agree with you.
Installing apk from jelly bean will fail as it has lower version (and it might be not the only reason).
Maybe some can grab sources from JB Dialer/Contacts app and change it's ID so Android will install it aside with original dialer as separate app painless?
:highfive:
it's just a matter of time till you get used to it, JB's dialer was and is outdated, the new one is a total improvement and you'll learn to like it like all of us did :fingers-crossed:
Why do you want the old dialer? If you have the same problem with it as me, I might have a workaround.
I hate that it doesnt show the dialer itself, I just want to open the app, press a few numbers and call a person. For this, someone made an Xposed module called Show Dialpad which will show the dialpad the moment you open the app. Now I don't mind using the new dialer anymore

Do you know how or if we can get landscape in the new dialler? With the 4.3 one, the dialler automatically switched to landscape when docked in the car, which the Kitkat one doesn't seem to do.

Xposed App Settings can also do that. Go to App Settings > Dialer, turn the switch on and in orientation, change (default) into Normal Rotation.

Thanks and yes I am already using that Xposed mod just to get some degree of landscape as unfortunately it doesn't give a 'proper' landscape mode. It just expands/compresses the portrait screen into landscape. So for example, the dialpad becomes almost unusable with the rows of numbers overlapping etc. On the 4.3 dialler, when docked, it brought up a properly formatted landscape mode, with the caller image on the left, and buttons on the right.

You can install Contacts+ from the play store. I would say it is a nice dialer to replace the stock.

If you need more information about it here is the thread.

Thanks. This certainly helps, but the one thing we're missing is the in-call landscape. Unfortunately due to the way Android works, it seems as if no other dialler can be used for the actual in-call functionality other than stock.

How would I go about replacing the Q5 dialer with the Q3 dialer? I tried it with TITBU by freezing and installing the APK but it failed?
Actually TITBU did downgrade the dialer, but it looks the same, so blocking must be at the kernel level?
Hey! The version of the messaging app only changes features. The UI is all serverside, hence why google can suddenly change messages back to its original theme.

So you are saying the messaging app decides what features the phone app has?

Yes. Doesn't affect UI unless it is a really old version.
