Does anyone know of anyway, or if it's even possible for the hardware keys to be remapped.
In my imagination the whole device would be more user friendly experience if the button were:
(Current:New)
Homeower
Power:Menu
Menu:Back
Back:Home

How about mapping the hardware ports also??this will be awesome too ,right?

And so on..

Don't be silly you can buy cheap micro USB to 3.5mm jacks converters on ebay from China. And sdcard to sim card.
Seriously though I don't know how the inputs from the buttons are designed nor the software level they operate.
I assume its perfectly possible to have the back button perform the home key function instead that's clearly at the ROM level. Obviously the power button totally depends on its architecture but I assume the physical home button would be more likely than the captive buttons as a potential swap.
You continue to troll your sack off, I use my home button most frequently. It serves to return to home, open the app draw if on home and to show recent apps on long press. It would feel nicer not to press a physical key.

Ok,let us be serious now ,with the aid of some launchers as nova u may add some gestures to the touch buttons as make long press menu going to invoke a certain app or shortcut and so on,but all of this done on the app software level not on the rom or the hardware permanent level , also in other tools as camera ics as i remember ,u can remap vol button as a physical shutter button, but again this is on the app level software not permanent ,for a full permanent hardware key remapping, it will not be that easy, and it will sure causes problem and mess with many other things that depends on the current key mapping and compnations..

Thank you for your reply, these are my suspicions also. Would be good to know about a specific concrete obstacle.

I have always said I will not buy a tablet until they have a multitouch keyboard, because for me that is necessary for using a tablet. One key at a time and/or Swype will not cut it. I need to be able to type like my keyboard at home.
Please will someone port Droid X's keyboard and you will make a buyer out of me, and probably make my mananger and boss very happy.
(I work at sprint )
I'll put forth $5, :-\...sorry I can't do more alot of my money is going towards my server for Team Galaxy Sense
I think you will have to stick a few digits on the ebd before anyone will even take that request seriously. porting an IME is no trivial task.
Why do you need a kultitouch keyboard anyway? I cant see any posible usage scenario other than gaming and remote desktop.

I installed it on my Tab and the font on the keyboard was tiny
SmartKeyboard Pro supports multitouch. Apparently. http://www.dexilog.com/smartkeyboard/
Smart keyboard pro does it very well, and I'm pretty sure that better keyboard does too... I have them both on my vibrant...but I still keep coming back to swype... I'm anxiously awaiting delivery of my tab though so I can't report on how well they work on the tab, although I AM running the leaked 2.2 (obsidian) rom on my vibrant (same processor/ram/etc...), and they work very well on it. If you have a store demo you can install the free version of smart keyboard pro on it... The multi touch works, just not the user dictionary and some of the other customization features (like setting the long press duration...)

A multi touch keyboard lets you type faster... Your finger can still be touching a key when you hit the next one... Without multi touch, your finger had to be completely off of the last key before you can hit the next one... It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it makes a noticeable difference...

I'm extremely picky about this and it was the reason I ditched my HTC Incredible (it's shoddy multi-touch couldn't keep up with my typing...this has supposedly been fixed in later patches).
Nonetheless, I installed Smart Keyboard (I hate Better Keyboard) on my Tab, and it works flawlessly. I highly recommend it, it's inexpensive and you won't break bank on it.
lol - smartkeyboard pro ftw, use it on both my android devices after trying everything else

LOL wut
2.2 should now support multitouch. But I don't get why that was a reason to ditch the incredible. Anyway, this hasn't been a issue for me and I can type pretty fast.

I have a Desire and I'm not sure if it's keyboard is multitouch (HTC IME Mod), but if it isn't then that would explain why I don't understand the need, but anything that lets me type faster is great, the two stock keyboards are utter rubbish.
Another vote for Smart Keyboard Pro. I have used it on both my Evo and G Tablet and it is the best.
Well, the default keyboard on my Tab does multitouch just fine. Only the Swype keyboard seems to lack multitouch when typing normally.

If I'm understanding right, then the default (not swype) keyboard lets me press a key and before removing my finger from it press another.
I believe this is the multitouch behaviour being requested and as such, assuming I am correct, I can also confirm this as working.
Will this "issue" eventually be fixed? The menu button that takes up some of the screen in games doesn't even work, as most games already have their own menu button somewhere in the game.

the more reason you need to unlock your phone
most apps are not really compatible to One X at the moment coz they are the first device released to have such configuration in ICS - capacitive buttons for back, home, recent apps (and no physical menu buttons)
it's really the apps' devs responsibility to update their applications more than HTC needed it

Good to know. I'm sure devs will update their apps even quicker when the USA One x comes out.
I'm posting this mostly for informational purposes to try and stop the same question being asked a billion times like some questions have been. ill try to keep this up to date as much as I can if I see questions getting asked repeatedly
Q: why should u root my g note 2?
A: wireless tethering works now, also: 5 words: every app in multi window. you can have every app in multi window action with a deodexed Rom and you can back up every app with titanium backup.
Q: how do I root my phone
A: I'm not going to go into this since there are many options, ways and since it changes so rapidly. look in the android development section of our phone's forum for the best option for you. Just do an in-forum search for root.
Q:What is the difference between the firmwares/what does all this talk about LJ1/LJC/LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 mean?
A: different firmware names are usually associated with updates to the stock system files. they are named after the modem (or radio software) and usually bring improvements or changes to the phone capabilities or bugs. there is usually different root methods for different firmware. this phone came stock with LJ1, got updated to LJC soon after to include multi-window and extended toggles support, and recently (as of the last time this post was edited) we got a leak of LK8 which brings minor stability and Bluetooth fixes. MA5's leak was a bit useless as nothing seemed to change. MA7 brought 4.2 and "Google wallet support" more on why it's in quotes in the wallet question. MC2 was supposed top bring bug fixes for many things including wallet but most can agree the wallet problem persists.
Q:My Wi-Fi turns on sporadically. how do I fix it?
A: Turn off connection optimizer under settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-connections optimizer
Q: How do I unlock the bootloader?
A: No need, only the Verizon one comes locked
Q: How do I draw on pictures?
A: In gallery go into the picture itself then press the menu button then tap on draw on image this flips over the image and you can draw on the back. for the front see the next question
Q: How do I draw on any app like in the commercial?
A: take a screenshot WITH THE PEN by holding the pen button and the screen for a few seconds it will take you to the screenshot to draw on it
Q: Is there any way to wireless tether?
A: now there is! go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and install that apk. it works with lj1 and ljc and on rooted and with busybox
Q: How do I get music controls on the lock screen?
A: you can't get them directly on the stock lock screen if you're not using security (it works with pin, patter, etc but not swipe), but it will let you pull down the notification bar to use the music controls that show up there. if you REALLY want it directly in the lock screen you'll need a lock screen replacement app that allows it
Q: My pen touches when coming into hovering range/it's too hard to click with it
A: there is two ways to fix this.
1. the crude more dangerous way is to smack it on a hard surface until it works for you (which I don't recommend)
2. the second is to adjust the potentiometer on the pen. pop the button off the pen and turn the screw closest to the tip clockwise for pens that touch while hovering and counterclockwise for pens that are too hard to tap with. trust me this is really easy.
Q: How do I turn on/off 4g? my old phone had a notification bar toggle!
A: go to "settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-network mode" and select "cdma" to turn off 4g, or select "cdma/lte" for 4g on
Q: does s-beam work with non-samsung phones that have nfc?
A: partially. if the file is small enough it will go through if not it takes the receiving device to a broken pay store link
Q: does Google wallet work?/why doesn't Google wallet work?
A: it's not officially supported before MA7 , but you can enable it, follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037416. After MA7 it's supposed to work naively without hacking but a lot of people especially those rooted it's been nothing but pain. try using it straight from the market and if it doesn't work seek individualized support from the q&a section
Q: no flash on jelly bean?
A: YouTube and most up to date websites are updating to html5. if you still find websites that tell you you're not good enough for not having flash then download it from blapkmarket.com or aptoide
Q: How do I take screenshots?
A: there are three ways with this phone:
1. with the pen: hold the pen's button and the screen for about 3 seconds. only this one takes you straight to drawing on it.
2. with the buttons: hold the home and power button together for about 3 seconds.
3. with the touch screen: swipe your entire palm from left to right on the screen, like you're cleaning all of it off. it's a bit tricky but play around with it you'll get it right every time with practice. *this one needs to be enabled under motion settings*
Q: why does my phone get so hot while charging?
A: the phone will get hotter while charging on low battery from the stock charger because it will try to take as much current as it can and the stock charger can provide 2 amps other charges don't give as much power to the phone so it won't be as hot. but don't worry, the phone itself monitors the battery's temperature and will shut off completely if it gets too hot for its own (or your) safety.
Q: How do I root the latest update/update if I'm root?
A:LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 needs stock firmware to update as of the last time this post was edited.
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?
A: get on the latest deodexed Rom by getting a custom recovery then flash this mod (which works in MC2 even though it didn't say so) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982452 which initially dumps every app into multi window.
Q: How do i get pop up browser (or another browser) back?
A: go to settings> applications and select the browser that had the default url handling and clear it's defaults, once you do that you should get asked which browser you want every time
Q: How do I skip music tracks/pause without turning on my phone?
A: while you can't just hold the volume buttons like in other phones the end call button on the stock headphones can pause and skip tracks. just click I once to pause, twice rapidly to skip
Q: can i use my mhl adapter and usb otg at the same time?
A: not with simple accessories, but there are ways around this.
1. the dock can do this (but it's always out of stock)
2. use Bluetooth: set up your mhl adapter and have Bluetooth peripherals like ps3 controllers, mice and keyboards.
3. use the Wi-Fi to your advantage: set up your usb otg and stream with allshare, set up an ftp from your phone. or set up your mhl adapter and access your computer files through wifi ftp
4. you can get it done with some tricky wiring, soldering and maybe a bit of cunning. but if you are someone who could get this done with instructions you won't need instructions to figure it out. all you need to know is USB otg pin out that mhl needs power to the phone and the adapter and that diodes and resistors make your apparatus too heavy and ugly and you might as well just buy a dock
Q: how do I change what the physical buttons do?
A:to change the back and menu keys just change it's value on /system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl back is 158 menu is 139. to edit what the hard press buttons do you have to change them BOTH IN GENERIC.KL AND GPIO-KEYS.KL or else your phone will freeze every time you press these, home is 172 in both files, volume down is 114 in both files, volume up is 115 in both files and power is 116 in both files.
I found this specially useful in combination with the soft keys below to make home button a native search button
Q: How do I enable soft keys and/or disable hard and capacitance keys?
A: simple tweak:
to add soft (in the screen) keys follow this:

I have the AT&T version, but I doubt it's different in this regard... For the lock screen music controls, they do appear at the top if you use a lock screen other than swipe or tilt. When you use Pattern or PIN, it shows the music controls, but you lose the quick app links. To get both (not at the same time though), you can select Pattern or PIN with swipe gesture. It will show the swipe lock screen with apps at the bottom, then when you swipe the screen it will show your pattern or PIN and the music controls at the top. I've had to resort to using the Pattern unlock just so I can get music controls
Interesting post. Thanks a lot

I have to admit I opened the thread ready to be snarky and find it to be crap, but I actually learned a few new things I didn't know yet. I've had the phone for about 4 days and hadn't figured out some things by playing with it that I got now because of this thread.

Hi, I've been really keen to get a note 2 for all that stylus goodness, other phones are pretty much all the same now. I would need to mod it a bit to be happy though - I really want onscreen nav keys like the nexus so I can use the stylus.
I've seen some people saying that the space taken up by the buttons interferes with app layouts - is this only an issue with stock touchwiz apps like the launcher, which presumably is hardcoded to the stock size? I'll be using Nova or something anyway, but I'll definitely keep touch wiz apps that use the pen well. Has anyone got any experience with this?
Thanks!
You could try PieControl or Lmt launcher which add a hotspot triggered pie menu (like the quick controls in stock browser).
IMHO these are better than nexus style onscreen softkeys since they don't take up space hence no compatibility issues.
Both apps are free and highly customizable. PieControl is on play store, lmt is on xda.
Should also mention that for any solution, adding menu or back commands will require root.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Have just this second stumbled on lmt - it looks amazing, much better than risking compatibility issues! Does it work well on the note 2?
If so I'll probably use that and maybe turn off the capacitive key lights.
Thanks!
I've been using lmt for a while now and it works great.
Disclaimer: I'm not rooted so I don't have the back button. Some people mentioned on the forum that it was laggy, but it seems to be a galaxy nexus issue. Note 2 is more powerful and shouldn't have any problems

I am planning on buying a galaxy S4 mini to use as a glorified remote for my entertainment center. I found the awesomeness in the unified remote app to do most of what I want, and since the s4 mini has an infrared emitter built in (one of the main reasons im seeking one) I was curious if theres a way to map the volume buttons on the side of the remote for infrared volume control specifically, this way I could dedicate the side buttons for controlling my TV's volume at will.
I thought it would add a nice touch to controlling my setup, since volume is one of the more frequently adjusted controls. is it possible?
It is possible, but you need a developer to edit the WatchON.apk for you to make it possible.

If we are talking about the same thing (You controlling a TV/another device with the IR blaster from your phone)... you have an app named WatchON which does the work. A developer needs to edit it to make it possible to use the volume buttons in the case you need.
i think we are, but im not too familiar with Samsung devices. im probably mainly just going to use the unified remote app found on the playstore, as it has everything I want, including a lot of customization options and remotes. it will do most of the work for my needs. I can control the volume via infrared through the touchscreen, I just thought being able to do the same with hardware volume buttons would be a nice added touch for my use. would be nice to control volume during a movie without having to wake the device and turn the screen on.
if watchon is another app that would allow me to do this (with your suggestion of having a developer add the feature) then I wouldn't mind adding another app specifically for this purpose. but it sounds like it might be a bit of trouble if I have to request a developer to add it just for me. haha.

Check out the Xposed framework. Google "7 Things You Can Do With The Xposed Framework on a Rooted Android Phone or Tablet" for a example of remapping hardware buttons. Xposed is easy to install, and has a lot of support (on XDA and other sites).
Yeah, I've got xposed already on my nexus 5, as well as gravitybox. I'll have to look through the list of xposed tweaks but I couldn't find any hardware settings. I'm pretty sure it exists, I just don't know if it exists for infrared actions.
