How to change - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do you change soft keys on this?

If you're talking about the home, back, and history buttons, you have to edit the framework-res.apk

Okay is there some sort of toolkit or mod package for this?

Google search "edit framework-res" and see what comes up.

Problems with Cyanogen Mod 7.2.0

I have installed the Cyanogen Mod 7.2.0 for 2 days now and I have encountered a problem that I don't know how to fix it. It is that on the main screen the button that enables to enter the apps section is missing and I can't get to those installed apps. However other shortcuts that are the main screen are working and can receive calls/sms/emails, etc.
There was a square button on the screen that helped entering the apps section, and now it is replaced with a star and it is inactive, by pressing it says "no application defined yet, drop something here".
does anyone how to fix it?
Press and hold on the main screen then select launcher actions then app drawer.
A shortcut to menu will be created.
Drag it into dock bar.

Thanks a lot... it helped
one other thing... is it possible to add more short cuts to the drop down? I see only for wifi, bluetooth, gps, and sound.
Yea go to settings/cyanogen/interface/notification power widget

[Mod] Disable home button wake

Not sure if this is the correct spot to put this but... If you are like me I HATE the home button wake feature especially with my wallet case as the case ends up turning on the screen when its in my pocket. So I found this guide for the S3 and followed the same procedure with a slight change to the file.
S3 Guide here
You will need to locate the file in system/usr/keylayout just like in the guide but you will need to edit gpio-keys.kl instead of the one they mention.
I used ES File Explorer with the following options checked under Root Settings: Root Explorer, Up To Root, Mount File System.
I opened the file using RB Text Editor, found Key 172 HOME and delete the word WAKE. Save and reboot and voila.
omg..why, i love this feature. so happy to finally have a real home button again.
I'm sure this will come in handy for quite a few people. Personally I like the home button wake.

I hate that it comes on with it, I wish I didn't need root. I rooted the first note 2I had but had it replaced so don't feel like rooting yet. Thanks very much though, I'm saving this so if/when I root I can get this dumb feature disabled. Phone doesn't need to have another wake button.

I love the home button as well. I have had no problems with the button activating the screen in my pocket either.

Galaxy note 2 hardkeys not working. Only home key.

Hi there. Changed my build prop to use softkeys, which I have done many times. Soft keys are great. But until there is a permanent soft key for menu I like turning off hardkeys but using the menu hardkey. Some reason now they have stopped workin except home key. Anyone have any idea's.

Not sure if you have solved the problem but....
There is a thread in the Android Development forums
....../showthread.php?t=2022058
In the second post, you can see where you can enable/disable keys. Check those values if they are commented out or removed. If so, uncomment or add them back in.
Hope this helps!

No dedicated menu button

I found there is apps I need to press menu to get to a screen but there is no menu or dots... For example holo launcher HQ I have to press menu in order to hide apps but I can't! Is there a workaround? Thanks. I tried googling but I don't think I am phrasing my issue right.

Touch and hold?
Sorry, no new info to add.
One example is in holo launcher HQ in the app drawer. I'm supposed to press menu to enter 'hide apps' ....can't touch and hold there. There's no way to add a menu button to the onscreen nav bar?

Cancel this dumb question. I discovered the settings in the launcher settings. Its optimized for the on screen buttons, oops

Customizing Buttons

I am wondering if there is a way to customize the Menu, Home, Back buttons. Since I am so use to how S4 buttons were. My S5 custom rom have this as built-in feature. However, the custom rom I am using on my Tab S 8.4 doesn't. Any idea?

I Googled about this a while ago and found an XDA post describing that you can make some changes to the HW button functionality. It required root and manually edits to a build.prop or similar system file. Unfortunately I no longer have the link to that post but you can do the same searches that I did. I was hoping to modify what they initiated and to add long press functionality. What I found only did some of what I wanted.

I was able to change the left soft key to menu button by editing two files located at /system/usr/keylayout/:
1) Generic.kl
under # samsung
key 254 RECENT APP
Change it to
key 254 MENU
2) gpio-keys.kl
Add this line to it: key 254 MENU
Save both file when you close it. Reboot into custom recovery, wipe cache and dev cache. As for the long press Home key to bring out Recent App, I can't seem to find a solution. I was able use a work around way. I use Nova Launcher, which allows me to assign "Recnt App" as double press on Home key. Hopfully someone will be able to assign long press Home key for it. I guess I will have to use my work around way for now.
