Baseband is the frequency ur phone transmit. Higher the baseband better reception. Tho it may consume ur battery faster than the lower 1s. So thats what baseband is.
As for flashing, all the custom rom require higher baseband. Reason is we're not on the same country/area & our coverage may differ from 1 another. So having higher baseband on custom rom determind whether u get ur connection or not.

Title = Question.
The closest I got was the MIUI ROM that's up on the front page of the development forum right now. It was so close to working. It said "No SIM Card" but the calls worked!! And the -36 baseband was recognized! The only problem was that with that status message, the phone would not allow me to save any APN settings, therefore I could not get data access.
I also tried it with the -42 baseband. These should be the newest AT&T specific basebands available that are AT&T specific.
The real problem is, I can install 62 just fine, but it only supports the slower HSPA data speeds as these are for the R800i.
I don't really expect a solution but I thought I'd ask

I am running CM9 (Cyanogenmod9) FXP127 with Mjolnir Kernel and modules, and I have hspa+ and it is a great ICS rom in my opinion:laugh:

I run FXP127 which I beleive was released fairly recently, Video does not work... ALTHOUGH if after installation you flash the Mjolnir4 Kernel and the modules (wont get wifi if you dont install the modules) the video works fine... the only problems I am having is the proximity sensor (just realized that today) as long as you dont leave the number pad up and close it when you dont need it, it doesnt bother me much. I am however going to research a fix for it this weekend.

Thanks again. The proximity sensor is one of those really tricky things. I don't mind Bluetooth audio not working, and other minor things like that. Video does have to work for me.
Actually I never had a problem with a non-working proximity sensor, except for Skype handling it very poorly. So I basically need it to work.
I have gotten all ICS roms that I've tried working on my AT&T play 4G(lol 4g). On some I may manually set the APN. I've tried KA11-14 Rom, Xdarkmario's Rom in .42 & .62 Firmware with Doomkernel ICS beta v.3, & CM9(can't remember which build) with CM's Kernel & recommended FW. I haven't tested for differences in speeds(data), but I got the H signal on all.
Edit** In NY area I hear that the. 42 FW with -56 baseband gets better call reception & less drops then newer .62 fw.

I noticed when I installed the new ROM on my Arc that there are a few basebands mentioned (56. 60. 70. etc). What is the difference between them? Which one is best for me? Are they location specific or is the higher number always newer/better?

Baseband is the software for the CDMA cgipset in your phone (GSM and wirelles). Baseband version represents the software version and offcourse like any software is best to have the latest software . Now, the latest baseband for arc / arc s is BB72... but from my personal experience for better battery life BB70 is the best.
Now, be carefull before flashing any baseband, Kernel and Rom is dependent on this baseband, and certain combinations (basebands and roms) might not work .
Here is my configuration, which i find the best posible :
Baseband : 70
Kernel : Arc night 3.3 Stock or Sirkay if you want OC
Rom : JJ`s Hybrid Rom 3.2 stable
not the latest is the best, it's location specific! See Flashing a baseband and why you should do it. Optimum baseband means harmony between battery life and signal reception. Try to look in the thread for your location, if it is not there, try experimenting with various basebands (make few phone calls before switching to another). For custom ROMs its best to ask its developer.

So I just got an S2X from Koodo and am using it with wind mobile.
I just want to know if any one would know whats the best radio to use ?
Unfortunately, modems vary. Most just seem to work well... latest is not always better.
Anyway, to get at least some guidance, you need to specify where you are located, and what baseband you're currently using...

Im in Calgary and am using the stock koodo baseband.
Funny thing is, when it was on stock I got a decent signal, when I flashed Jedi Mind Trick the signal seemed a bit weaker (still the same stock baseband)
When I last flashed JMT, it said "unknown" for baseband. From what I hear, it may be worthwhile to re-flash a modem after doing a ROM switch.
I'm currently using TDJ's RILS-removed LC8 build. The LG3 build I understand has been pretty good for others. I'm in USA though, so I don't have any info in your area.
And when you say stock, what are you on? ICS stock: UVLE1?
I want to Install the newest baseband, but I don't know what's that .

This forum is about 3 Models. Xperia S, ACRO S and iON. So mention your current model and the baseband you have right now. So that other users can help you with that.
I don't know it clearly. I just flash the XZX ROM,and my signal always lost. So, I wanna ask for help
You are using Xperia S? The XZX ROM is using the latest 0.55 firmware base by SONY. SO I am thinking the it includes the latest baseband already.
It's not necessary that the latest baseband will solve the issue. You can try the 0.45 or 0.50 baseband too. See which one suits your network. And contact the developer of the ROM also.
Tell the problem that you are facing, post in that thread too.
Hello all. I have a I9195T (Telstra, Australia - Serranoltexx), which I took the plunge and rooted (thank you arco68!) and then installed CM10.2 direct from the CM wiki page. This is working great, but I am bit confused as to how the modem works. I appear to have retained my baseband (phew!), but wonder how this translates to using other custom ROM's from XDA etc.
If they are made for a different baseband (but for I9195) is it possible to backup the MODEM firmware, flash another ROM and then flash the MODEM over again to retain the baseband? If this is possible where do I find the MODEM firmware to back it up? I've had a search but I think I am missing the really low level understanding of how the MODEM itself fits into the ROM picture.
Any help appreciated, even if its just a search term suggestion or link.
edit: I should put my baseband is I9195TDVUAMH1, using 1800mhz LTE.

As far as i know our devices does not have any limitations concerning flashing ROMs and having an "incorrect" Modem.
I would recommend though to have always the latest modem.
