Screen glue melted and seeped through screen - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Yup as the title states last night I had my phone on charge while I was using it laying down in bed then fell asleep. This morning I found it halfway under my pillow, so while checking the time I noticed some sticky residue on my screen protector ( by the way I have a black tpu case on it also because I have a hyperion extended battery) anyways, I wiped it off and got ready for work. When I arrived to my desk at work. I saw more of that brownish gooey stuff on the screen. So when I removed the tpu case and phone cover assuming it was possibly battery acid leaking from the battery. It was all over the inside of the case but not a drop inside the phone where battery is, and battery was fine. I was stumped... so I applied a little bit of pressure to the screen and low and behold the gooey stuff started seeping out the side of the glass. Im guessing its the glue that holds the screen or digitizer in place so cleaned it off thoroughly. Removed battery, sim and sdcard and place phone in the fridge for about 30 min to harden back the glue now its good as new. The irony is my 30 day warranty ended friday. Seems like being partly under the pillow while charging generated a lot of heat, causing the glue to melt. Just thought id share.

Suddenly I have visions of waking up with my S3 glued to my face....
Thanks for the heads up!

Call samsung and you can probably get a replacement since it's defective from manufacturer.

I notice that too I went to bed once and i had my phone charging next to me in bed and when i woke up it was extremely hot didnt melt the glue but was super hot My 4s had that issue too so its not the phones fault just that charging creates alot of heat

Evo temp..

I recently got water inside my screen. The phone still worked, but you could see the water blur when the screen was on. I turned the phone off, removed the battery, and put the phone on my dashboard with the defroster running hot. Not SO hot, but on the cold-warm-hot dial, I had it just past the mid point of warm, and at 2 of the 4 fan speed settings.
I left it on there for about 30 minutes, and now I've just taken it off. The phone was really hot, (remember, it was also OFF with the battery removed). It wasnt much hotter than it gets on the charger, maybe MAYBE 10 degrees hotter. I can hold it to my cheek without hurting. Just wondering if this is bad for the phone, or if anything could have been damaged. I'm waiting for it to cool back down before I try turning it back on.
Can't really say until you turn it back on. If it turns on and works as it should, no harm done.

Think of it this way, the phone is used to being hot, but not to having moisture in it

ok I turned it on and it booted up fine, but the screen is still whacked out looking. Truth is, I installed the new screen protector and used a LOT of the applicator spray to get it just right. I guess it seeped into the speaker and/or sides or wherever and got under the screen.
Should I put it back on the defroster?
When I had my Blackberry, I would put it in a dish full of rice overnight. The rice would extract the moisture. I have not tried it with my EVO, but I would *assume* the same results.

I had the same issue with my EVO. My kid had been using it as a teething toy and eventually got water behind the screen. I tried heating it up and drying it on heat vents in my house. It didn't work. Ended up paying $100 to get it fixed. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Done that twice. Lol sucks glass seal wasn't good for me.
Well, after 2 hours on the defroster, nothing has changed. The brightness continually flickers low to high, and the streaks just make it look like crap.
If this doesnt dry itself out by morning. I'll call sprint. I'm REALLY not wanting to pay $100 for it to be fixed. The evo 3d is starting to look nice..
The evo 3d does sound nice if you can wait that long.

The rice did not work. Unless brown rice has different characteristics. I left it in a pan of rice with the cover on, no change at all.
I called Sprint today, they made a ticket up, etc., so either today or tomorrow I'll go to the store. I could hardly understand what the guy was saying, but I did pick up the words "replace" and "$35". It would be nice if it was a new phone, but I'm hoping for at least the screen replaced, with no crazy charges or anything. my back speaker is getting really bad and I had been waiting for it to get worse before I made a claim, hopefully I can get that taken care of as well.
Yes definitely put in a sealed container of rice. Rice absorbs moisture. Better yet, if you have any silica packets out of shoe boxes, toss those in a sealed box with your phone. Both absorb moisture out of things better than trying to evaporate and possibly damage your phone.
I put it in a sealed container of Sprint techs.
I took it in today, they replaced the screen AND the rear speaker, and it was only $35. Very quick and easy, and they even just billed it to my account.
I can tell they scratched the new screen though. I wish I had noticed it before I left.
I told myself that if it was going to be any more than $35, I would just buy the tools off of that ifixit.com site and replace the screen myself.

[Q] Dropped Epic in Toilet

Dropped it in toilet drunk, got it out. Noticibly slower, many things FC, some keys don't work.
Already have 2 insurance claims this year, can't get a replacement that way. How can they tell it's water damaged? I noticed a pink sticker thing on the battery, is this some sort of water damage indicator? I have a spare battery if thats the only thing that would alert the techs to this being my fault.
If I took it in with a different battery after odinging to stock would they just think it crapped out on me due to no responsibilty of my own?
That suck man.... here's a link about the water indicator's..... and I think the reps would look for corrosion over the indicators because if they get the phone before it rusts then they can dry it out correctly......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147570
Yeah, looks like I'll have to take it to them and play dumb, and if they mention the water damage and refer me to asurion who I don't think will do more than 2 claims in a year, I'll just pull the cancel card, bring up the 2 100 dollar rebates that I never got and get a nexus s for 250
this is the third time i've heard about the epic being dropped in water and it still worked(ish) freaking incredible! kudos samsung
I could be mistaken but I thought TEP allowed you more claims than just 2 a year, maybe quite a few more. Good luck.

Me as well. Someone dropped theirs in a pot of Tomato Soup and it still worked. If you havent , let it dry without battery, back cover, also remove SD. You may get lucky and have a full functioning phone again. If that doesn't work, try saying you work construction and phone got damp from being in your pocket while working. My touchscreen broke and I took it to get repaired. At first the tech said I was screwed because of a hairline crack in the plastic around the screen. I explained that it failed before that. So, I was extra friendly. I started talking about upcoming phones, etc. Well, he ended up giving,me a new screen, keyboard, back cover. Only my motherboard was original. Paid nothing. If you don't have insurance, be cool and don't get upset. I bet $35 gets you a new whatever needs to be replaced...maybe some extras like I did

I think it will dry out, it was running fine for a bit, all keys working, not going slow, then it started going slow and a few keys stopped working. Decided to just go ahead and get the nexus s, CM7, oh yeah...

Yeah, you do get three claims but I figured dry out and sell the epic if I get it working 100% keep a claim in case I drop the nexus, and enjoy cm7

Ha. Dropped mine in the toilet 2 weeks ago. Seriously had it out of the water within 1.5 seconds. Left it in rice overnight. Worked on bootup the next day. But after about an hour it went kaputz. Had to use assurion.

My girl dropped her EVO in the toilet, dead. I dropped mine in a sink full of water, it actually sat there for about 3 full seconds until i reailzed what the splash was. Pulled it out, set it next to a little portable heater for a few hours and to my astonishment it still worked perfectly. Some water must have gotten in the screen as it is a little blury in a small spot but other than that I'm still using it like it's new. If you've ever taken one of these apart, it is easy to see how hard it would be for water to fully get inside the case.
Son spilled soda all over mine. I cleaned it up and dried out battery. That was 7 months ago and it works like a champ. I am getting a galaxy s 2 when they hit the u s.

Just dropped mine into the toilet about an hour ago. when i finished getting over the idea that I, too, was now one of those people, i put down the litter box I was about to scoop and fished it out.
Next thing I did was rip the back off and dump the battery, idea being to avoid any shorts caused by water mixed with power on circuit board. It had been in there for like 3 seconds, maybe 4.
I knocked it about for a while to see how much water would pour out - not much! So I let in dry out for like 10 mins, knocked it out a bit again, then put the battery in. First thing I noticed was that it seemed to turn on BEFORE I pressed the power button, something I specifically noticed. Hmmm.
The rest seemed normal enough. I was crazy impressed! Even a small dunk in a toilet (clean, luckily) is not a drop in a shallow puddle.
However, a bit later I needed to boot into recovery, and I couldn't get the freakin' phone to shut off. I mean it would shut off but come right back on again. I was thinking, water drop in the power button or worse a permanent short.
When I took the back off I saw that the camera had moisture inside of it. I remembered when this happened to a telephoto lens of mine recently and I extended the lens all the way as I walked. The lens casing heated in the sun and the moisture came out through the uh, rings? of the fully-extended lens.
So imagining that if the water could get in, it could get out, I broke out the hairdryer. It's a small one I've used for putting that plastic stuff over windows in the winter. I put it on high and held it like 2 or 3 feet from the back of the phone (cover off) for a while, always moving it to avoid hot spots on the phone. After a min or 2 the moisture was gone. I spent another min waving the dryer over the power button.

If anything goes wrong I'm sorry to say it was because you rushed it all. You more than likely should have had it drying days not minutes and you never use a dryer. But, I'm knocking on wood, good luck!

I suppose one has to know the rules before you can break them. I have some experience with electronics and circuit boards, and have a feel for how much heat I could safely apply to the thing. I tried to indicate this in the original message by writing that I kept the dryer a few feet away from the phone, that it is a small dryer, and that I always kept it in motion. Oh and that I performed this maneuver over a period of a few minutes.
If anything goes wrong I'm sorry to say it was because I dropped it into a toilet. The age old tried and true blow dryer method, when properly applied, wouldn't be a problem.

Sorry to hear. Take solace in the fact that w/ most scratches, a screen protector will hide it and you won't even notice it, assuming the scratch isn't too deep.
EDIT: I just saw you said there was no scratch found. Glad to hear.
the weight of GN is lighter than my last phone Desrie HD, I think this is why there is no scratch
My phone fell out of my pocket in the theater last night onto the concrete floor and I was worried for the rest of the movie. Got out and not a single blemish on it! Seems to be fairly durable so far, not that I want to be testing that out.
I dropped my GSM version down a flight of stairs... about 6-8 steps at work.
Stairs/floor was carpeted though.
Phone bounced, slid, flipped.
Not a single scratch, dent, etc.
I had no screen protector on either.

You guys are lucky. Mine slipped off of a table onto concrete from about 4 feet high and I have some pretty nasty chips/dings on the plastic around the screen. I'm going to sell this one and get a new GN and keep it in a case at all times.

+1 for the shudders every time I read each experience with their "falls".
Dropped mine in an optus shop on their tiled floor, was comparing it to a moto razr . not a single mark
i know people always say that light devices feel 'cheap' however imo i prefer it causes less damage when you drop it, while i havnt done it yet with my cowon s9 when listening to music and if you drop it its too light to actually disconnect the headphones so it just swings there , im hoping the GN will be similar if it ever happens
I was jogging and dropped my Nexus on pavement. Got some scratches in the housing...*cringe* but the screen is still flawless. :-(
got 2 light scratches on the sides thinking of calling Verizon and making up an excuse to get another one sent

So how resilient is the One X? Place bets... NOW

I use my phones when running to time and track them, pretty common.
Tonight, half way through my run an epic downpour of flash flood creating proportions occurred drenching me in seconds, whilst the One X was attached to me in a neoprene arm band. There was pretty much zero useful cover
I hid in a large bush to take the worst of it and powered the phone off. The rain never stopped (although it was much less absurd), so I had to finish the remaining 3-odd miles in it, trying to shield the phone from the rest of the rain.
It's now in a bag full of rice (brown, one of it's five a day) on a radiator. Fingers crossed I'm just paranoid and it will power up just fine tomorrow.
If it's perfect unit without gaps and stuff like that, i guess it will be fine .
Hmm.. horrible story, no pocket, roof... nothing to hide? .
I would leave it with the face down and keep my fingers crossed it will function again.
Good luck with it!

Well the problem with one x is the micro usb and headphones that will allow water to seep through. however as you switch off your phone before its fully wet and do not switch it on again until its fully dried, the chances of getting everything to work will be very-very good.
I got soaked to the skin in our beautiful British weather way back in June, an absolute torrential downpour. I was out all day walking, weather was sunny for most of the day so it was a pair of shorts and a shirt and that was it. Walked about two miles in said downpour to train station, I couldn't have been any wetter if I'd jumped in the sea fully clothed. I shielded my hox as best I could just with my hand. Dried it with some paper towels when I got to the station and have never had a problem since, I doubt you'll have any problems.

Yeah that was my plan, getting it powered down as soon as possible should mitigate things.
When taking the phone out of the armband (foamy neoprene, so that should have kept the worst at bay) it was a bit streaky on the surface as you'd expect, but wasn't dripping, so it was towelled (carefully, didn't want to hit the power button) and bagged.
It's been in the rice bag for about 13½ hours now and will stay there 'til this evening (as I am at work now). In the meantime, it's strange not having something with notifications going off all the time, hell I haven't even bothered with a spare phone today... silence is golden
Unibody is a good thing in cases like this, the rear speaker is pretty well sealed, and I don't have any (noticeable) gaps around the screen.
my HOX has fallen on to our wooden floor on 6 or 7 occasions, apart from one tiny tiny svcratch on the screen, this phone has no other blemishes. Quality build!!!!
Crazy downpour 0:1 HTC One X
It has less to do with the phone's design and more to do that regular water just isn't a great conductor. I've pretty much soaked every phone I've had in the last 10 years and never had one fail.
Dropped mine in sink of water months ago. It freaked for a bit resetting itself drained all its battery and wouldn't stay off or charge properly but after a few hours of drying whilst rebooting it was fine. Water marks behind screen cleared after a few days.
Then it was knocked off a table from 4 foot height onto stone floor. Screen shattered. The major weakness of this phone is the protruding screen edges. Glass shatters easier from the edges.

my Note 2 got wet but still working fine?

Hey everyone, in the middle of the night a cup of water fell over my phone. I only realized it when I woke up some hours later and saw my phone soaked in water. I quickly cleansed it with a cloth. I turned the phone off, Removed the gel cape, the cover and battery (which thankfully was not wet). And I let it dry for the rest of the night.
Today I woke up and turned on the phone and it was working just fine. Everything is working but im afraid humidity or corrosion will bite me in the ass later.
What do you guys think?

If a cup of water fell on it and your phone stood in water all night - and everything is working fine, i think it's safe to say that water didn't actually make it to the interiors. If you let it dry for a day and it still works - i don't think there's anything to worry about.
I dropped my galaxy s2 into a toilet in India and it was floating there for 30 seconds. Disgusting and true story. I washed it off in the sink, wiped it with hand sanitizer, took it apart and put all pieces in a big bag of rice for 3 days. This was 7 months ago and it works till this day. Bag of rice was the savior.

There's a video on YouTube where they submerged the Note 2 in a fish tank for a few seconds, Phone was still ON and then they pulled it out turned it off dried it for 2days and it still worked. As long as you can get it completely dried you're fine but if any water is still left inside it might cause rust on some metallic components such as the usb port and audio port. Also tou might wanna check the water damage indicator beneath the battery to see if it ahows any indication as that might void your warranty aswell.

My old g1 was dropped in the toilet while I was talking on it (was helping my toddler get onto the potty while I was on the phone). I watched it turn off while in the water, pulled it out, took it apart, and then put it in rice for 3 days. It worked fine after that.
It still works today.
I think your note 2 is fine.
