i have a kindle fire with cm10 on it and i just wanted to go in to backup what's in the /data/app/ folder and i just noticed that adb doesn't work. when i start the adb server and type the command to show the devices (adb devices), nothing shows up. what can i do to get it to show up? thanks for the help in advance!
Do you have debugging enabled?
Plz remember to change bootmode to normal (4000). And u may consider this as I faced similar problem n it worked well for me:
• Connect the Kindle Fire in normal mode (fastboot mode) to the computer
• In the Device Manager, right click on the device and select "Uninstall"
• Check the "Delete the driver software for this device." box and press "OK"
• Disconnect the Kindle Fire, reconnect and reboot in normal mode (fastboot mode)
• The Device Manager should show "Other devices -> Kindle" ("Other devices -> kindle")
• Right click on "Kindle" ("kindle") and select "Update Driver Software..."
• Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
• Do not click the "Next" button, but select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
• Select "Android Phone" and then press the "Next" button
• Press the "Have Disk..." button
• Click the "Browse..." button, point it to the "C:\kfu\drivers\kindle" directory and press "Open"
• Press the "OK" button
• Uncheck the "Show compatible hardware" checkbox
• Select "Android Composite ADB Interface" ("Android ADB Interface") and press the "Next" button
• Select "Install this driver software anyway"
• Press the "Close" button
The device should now appear in the Device Manager.

Correction, Linux does need the adb driver and there is some configuration to be done. So...it doesn't "just work".

So do you have your udev rules set up for adb and fastboot? Also, if you're using cm10 there is a good likeliness that the product ID (PID) is different. Do you know how to check?

I wrote this guide for the Htc Evo3d-Cdma ver and started a thread there but I also wanted to start one here in case it might be helpful to anyone.
I take no responsibility if you screw up your phone. "IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS GUIDE IS FOR OR HOW TO USE IT PLEASE DON'T".
How to install adb windows 8 Developers Preview
From what I've read a few members were having troubles installing adb on Windows 8 dev Preview-64bit
I have it installed and running and thought I'd share how I did it.
Ive linked a zip file containg the adb drivers, the java.exe, the android-sdk and the easytether.exe
I take no credit whatsoever for the htc/android driver I downloaded them from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514942
Thanks to xda member "1wayjonny" please hit the thread up and give thanks to him for all his hard work.
There are alot of other methods to get adb installed on windows8 this is just how I did it.
Laie1472 link
http://db.tt/z5avjkJS
Here we go
Download the zip attatched to the link.
#1-Extract the "laie1472.zip" to your desktop or folder of choice.
#2-Extract the "universal zip" into the same folder.
Now install the jdk-6u22-windows-i586.exe if your running an intel i5 if not then download the correct java version from here-
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
and let it run that's all for the java.
Second extract the android-sdk_r07-windows.zip to your c:\ drive.
Meaning right click on the android sdk and choose extract.
A window will appear. In the address bar of that window is were the files will currently be extracted to. Please delete everything in the address bar except the c:\ Then click "ok" and close the window.
Then go to your start menu and click on it. From there go to computer and click on it. Then you will see an icon that says (c That's your hard drive were you extracted the android sdk. Click/Double click on this icon. From there you should see a folder named Android-sdk something something, Right click on this folder and rename it to "AndroidSDK" without the quotes.
Please rename the folder exactly as I wrote it capitol letters and all.
Next make sure that you have usb debuggin enabled on your phone. If you can't find this, "PLEASE STOP UNTIL YOU DO"
Now run the easytether.exe "free app included in the zip" file and when it opens up it will give you an option of Easy tether core or Android USB drivers. Please choose the Android USB drivers. But "STOP" and click the little arrow next to ANDROID USB DRIVERS. A menu will appear. When it does please choose ENTIRE FEATURE WILL BE INSTALLED ON C:\ DRIVE. Check that option as well. Click install and let it finish.
Now please REBOOT your Laptop/Desktop.
When your pc/laptop is up and running, plug your phone into your pc while powered on and choose "charge Mode only".
Then select the windows key on the keyboard
Then select "control Panel"
Then select "more settings"
Then select "device Manger"
Once your there look for the ""ADB DRIVER" or while in device manger unplug your phone from your pc and then plug it back in and choose "charge only" and watch for the device driver that shows up.
Then "right click" and choose "update driver"
Then select
"browse MY Computer for driver software"
Then select
"let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Then a window will appear.
Then select
"Next" from the top of the window.
Then select
"Have DISK"
Now when that window opens select "browse"
Then another window will appear.
Now at the top of the window you will see an "address bar" with a "down arrow next to it".
Select the "down arrow" and then a drop down list will appear.
From here browse to your desktop or where ever you extracted the laie1472.zip to and find the universal folder.
Then select the driver
"android_winusb.inf" and select "open".
Another window will appear and then select "OK"
Windows will prompt you to install the driver, also it will warn you that the driver is not signed but press install anyway.
When that is done close out all windows and unplug your phone.
Now restart your laptop/pc. You can do this by holding the window key and press the letter "R"
Now type "cmd" and press enter.
Now a command window will appear, in that window type this or copy and paste it
shutdown /s
Then press enter. Another window will appear saying that windows will shutdown in 60 seconds press ok.
Then type
exit
Then press enter and wait.
When your pc/laptop is back up and running plug your phone into your laptop/pc and choose charge only.
Then hold the window key and press the letter "R"
Now type "cmd" amd press enter.
When that command window appears. Type this command or copy and paste it.
cd\
then hit enter
Now type cd\AndroidSDK\tools\
Then hit enter
Now type
adb devices
You "should" see a bunch of numbers
Those numbers. Represent your phone.
Now type
adb shell
Then hit enter on your keyboard.
You should see the # sign. That means you have adb installed. To test it just type reboot recovery and it should reboot your phone into your current recovery. From there you got it.

If you need help installing adb on windows 7-32,64bit,Vista-32,64bit or Xp-32,64bit see my thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858118
Also the sdk I included is the older version, I haven't tried with the latest one. If you do please post if your successful to benefit the community. Also the path to the tools folder will change with the latest sdk, the command should be
c:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools\
This is not for development only for adb. You have to download the development platforms via adb tools.exe to do development.
Hope this helps.

I had a lot of trouble getting the adb drivers on my work Win7 x64 laptop working. Here's what seems to have done the trick.
1. Pull up a commandline, go to Documents and Settings\username\.android directory, and do
Code:
echo 0x04e8 >> adb_usb.ini
if you haven't done so already.
2. Install KIES. (Downloading the separate driver package didn't work--the driver package refused to install.)
3. Set device in adb mode (Settings | Applications | Development | USB debugging(x)).
4. Plug device into computer. You will get a tray icon with stuff spinning. Click on it. If things go fine, you'll eventually see a list of drivers with "Ready to use" and green checkmarks.
If all the drivers have checkmarks, you're done--you had it easy. This guide is for cases like mine where you find that two drivers, "CDC Serial" and "SAMSUNG_Android" are labeled "No driver found" and adb doesn't work.
5. Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties, then "Device Manager". Expand "Other devices".
6. Right-click on "SAMSUNG_Android".
7. Choose "Update driver software" | "Browse my computer for driver software" | "Let me pick from a list".
8. Make sure "Show All Devices" is selected and click on "Next".
9. Click on "Have Disk" and type in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\USB Drivers\25_escape" (auto complete made it easier to type; if you have 32-bit windows, the " (x86)" should be omitted).
10. You will get a two-pane selection of the drivers. Selecting one of the two "SAMSUNG Electronics Co., Ltd." listings (you may need to look through both) in the left pane gives an option list on the right that includes two "SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface".
11. Choose the first "SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface" and click on "Next". You will get a warning that Windows cannot verify compatibility. Accept this. Windows will install the driver and once it's done you'll click on "Close".
12. Windows installed the driver and ADB started working. (If it didn't start working, I would now have gone back to the Device Manager, right clicked on "SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface", and then redid steps 7-11, but this time with the other "SAMSUNG Android ADB Interface" driver.)
This is enough to get adb working. But it's still probably worth fixing the CDC Serial device.
13. Repeat steps 7-11 in the Device Manager with the "CDC Serial" device now, except that instead of the ADB driver you will look for and install "Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device" in the right pane in steps 10-11.
If all goes well, you will get more spinning stuff in the task bar, and eventually Device Manager doesn't show any devices in "Other devices" with yellow triangles. But if things go for you like they did for me, you'll have "CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM) in "Other devices".
14. Repeat steps 7-9 in the Device Manager with the "CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM)" device now. (You may have some USB Modem options showing up in some places, but I ignored those, and did the same "Have Disk" move as before.)
15. I got a single-pane display showing only "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem". (Maybe you'll have two-pane display and you'll have to find it as in steps 10-11.) Select it and click "Next". I didn't get any warnings. Windows will install the driver and once it's done you'll click on "Close".
At this point, Device Manager showed all devices correctly functioning. And "adb shell" worked fine.
16. If you don't want KIES, just uninstall it, but make sure not to uninstall the drivers (the KIES uninstaller will ask).
Man, thank you so much. I was going crazy with this. Worked for my T-mobile SGS3. :cyclops:
One thing that's not mentioned, after I fixed the ADB and the CDC driver, it threw an error in the MTP device, I just let Winblows install that one automatically and it worked fine.
There is less steps needed,i got my ADB working in Windows 8 64bit RC1 developer preview flawlessly.
Just disable driver signature, install sdk,add sdk folder to windows environment and you are done.
nice. I didn't have any problems with mine, just sayin. Its always nice to see people help each other.

Great guide man! Helped solving some driver issues with Windows 8.1 and Note 3, particularly installing the SAMSUNG_android adb device manually!
Thank you very much!
I thought I would never find a tutorial like that, it saved my life lol. Thank you so much!
It just doesn't show up in ADB devices. However, when I change ROMs it does, but gives me an error when trying to mount "not permitted"
Amazon was of no help. They gave an add on link to enter into SDK manager but it would fail every time... something on how it failed to update the status to complete. I'll add images later.
Can anyone help me with this? In case stuff goes south with my phone, I want to have a chance at recovery through ADB.

After OTA from 8.00 to offcial 8.1.0 I ran into MTP problems, device not recognized by windows 10(x64)
After searching on Google I found a few options but this one works for me:
- Go to Settings->Apps & notifications->App info->Tap 3 dots in top right corner->Tap 'Show system'.
- Find both 'External storage' and 'Media storage' apps in the list and clear cache and data for them.
- Restart your phone and let it settle (wait a minute or two) before connecting the phone to your PC.
- The phone now shows the 'USB connected for charging' notification again, tap that notification and select file transfer.

No luck for me... any other workaround?
The same situation, in android 8.0 no problem, 8.1 and windows 10 x64, no MTP working...
I experienced the same problem. What I did was:
1. Search for device manager and open that up.
2. Go to portable devices
3. Click and right click on MTP(?) and select update driver
4. Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
6. Manufacturer should be on (Standard MTP Devices) and Model should be MTP Devices
7. Click Next and click Yes.
Only thing is it's temporary. But you can do it again and pretty much get used to it in no time

Hello, I followed your mentioned steps but in my drivers its showing "Samsung Android Device" is that okay for my asus zenfone max pro m1 device? Or there is one portable device option, is that it?
Hi guys, specially opened an account because of this issue. I am unable to run the fastboot devices command even after following all the aforementioned steps. Phone screen turns black and a message appears on the top left stating "press any key to shutdown", while the fastboot devices command gives a "??????? fastboot" response on my PC. PLEASE HELP!

After I completed all the steps, my phone showed on screen "press any key to shutdown" and even in device manager it shows android ADB interface as hidden. Help please. Rebooting again to fastboot mode doesn't help because it shows the same screen "press any key to shutdown" on reconnecting with PC.
May Asus x01bd can't in to the mode fastboot..how to solved it?

Well i learned this from somewhere but actually you need to turn off the secure boot in your PC from the BIOS. That's what helped me do it

Well you know how there's a BIOS in your PC which contains the basic commands required to run a computer. There is a setting called secure boot inside your BIOS. You need to turn it off and then install fastboot tools. To open the BIOS, repeatedly press F10 or F8 on your computer while it is opening. This is how it worked for me atleast

this happen to me,, and i have solved this,,
step:
1. U must flash ur Phone via qfil,(*)
,than u will lost ur IMEI and SN will Change to 111111,, but dont worry thats can be back again
2. next step is u must recover ur IMEI and SN back (in tele group u wil found the step) after that U just flash stock firmware modified (via TWRP/ORFOX)n then ur phne willl back normally
Note : (*) in firmware for flash via qfil replace the recovery.img with twrp/orfox (rename To "recovery.img") this will bring u a twrp/orfox recovery after flash via qvil
