I've searched the forum some, but I'm wondering if there's a quick, straightforward answer here. I'm going to a prepaid service (Virgin/Boost most likely). Has it been done before having and unlocked GNex run on either of those services?
I'm very unaware re: how those services run; I just know they use CDMA towers, so to me it would seem an unlocked, CDMA GNex would be able to run on say, Boost mobile.
Thanks for any info!
Not sure how well unlocking the CDMA Gnex works. but why not just get the unlocked GSM Gnex and use the tmobile 30/month plan? Better than having to worry about it working or not.

Had no idea that even existed, thanks for the help!
Like I said, I'm new to the prepaid world, I'm trying to figure this all out. 'ppreciate it!
+1 on the T-Mobile prepaid.
I don't think the concept of an unlocked CDMA phone exists. To my knowledge, all CDMA phones are carrier specific.
I came to tmobile from Virgin. The plans are good. But the 3g data speeds here in Indianapolis were abysmal, like 150 kbps down.
Since then, have move to the GNex on Tmo. Couldn't be happier.

Check this thread out. Everything you need to know about prepaid for the unlocked gsm galaxy nexus.
If you have/are looking to purchase a CDMA (sprint/Verizon) galaxy nexus, I suggest you read up on this thread. The benefits of an unlocked gsm gnex are insane.

Hurry up and find the best prepaid solution that meets your needs and enjoy the savings. As for me, my wife and I were paying about $185 a month on VZW for 2 smart phones. Now, it costs us $90 a month for 2 smart phones on Straight Talk's $45 unlimited minutes, text and mobile web access. Keep in mind that with Straight Talk (other prepaid providers as well) that unlimited data is actually limited. They will throttle you if you use to much.
Tmobile 30/month prepaid plan FTW

straight talk would also be a good option. It's $45 a month, but If you're like me and are serviced by AT&T but not T-Mobile in your area, it's a good deal. Unlimited everything btw

Buy the GSM model and choose one of the good prepaid options out there. Straight Talk and T-Mobile Monthly 4G are the best choices right now.
I recommend you read through the 100s of pages of great information in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014 . We've answered and covered just about every situation possible in there.
Looks like I'm going the GSM route! Just ordered the unlocked GSM Neus from Google Play.
Probably some of the most helpful responses I've ever received on a forum, thanks to everyone for all the help.

Anyone using the unlocked gnex with straight talk? If so how is the coverage and speed? I am in central Indiana and Sprint just sucks. I was looking at this option because I don't like the contract anymore. Let me know if you have any feedback.
Thanks

My girl has her nexus one on straight talk and it works great. Detroit area.
I had a GS2 on Sprint that I just dumped for the Gnex on Straight Talk and I couldn't be happier! The speeds are amazing and the coverage in my area is better than I had on Sprint. Best of luck!
You should ask in the Prepaid Thread...
My fastest speed on st att from the last 3 weeks has been 200k.I am surrounded by att towers. I got a tmo monthly 4g Sim and I'm getting 4.9mbs down right now with fewer towers.

That's hardly the norm. There was a problem with your situation (whether your fault or the local tower's). Because those are EDGE speeds. There's something going on in your area that is just not right.
Also, remember that Straight Talk provides service on T-Mobile too, if you prefer slightly higher speeds and are OK with the lower coverage. You can choose at the time of purchase whether you want AT&T or T-Mobile coverage, and the GNex can use either one.
I'll have to read more into what Straight Talk is, but everyone needs to keep in mind the following:
We choose to sign the contracts. You are welcome to buy phones for full price and use service without a contract, as I've done before.
Often, contracts might save $200 (arbitrary numbers here) on a phone, and you're cancellation fee might be $200. They're not stealing your money if you cancel, they're simply reclaiming the money they gifted you for agreeing to be their loyal customer.
Oh, and I'm on Verizon.. so I really love hearing about people having success with carriers that don't keep your wallet ultra-light.
Edit: I think I got into slight rant mode about the "..I don't like the contract anymore..." I just always like to make note the contract isn't mandatory. =)
Let me start. I would go to at&t or t-mobile in a heartbeat.

It's just really annoying to see a bazillion threads about Sprint this, Verizon that, AT&T OMG, T-Mobile stole my money, I hate Bell, blah blah. Carrier discussion is phone agnostic. There is little that is specifically relevant about the carriers to the S III. Yes, the software differences and radio differences are important, but other than that it's just pointless and adds clutter here.
Man, people are getting their bums hurt when someone talks bad about the Yellow. Yikes.
Well, personally it would be a hard choice. If Sprint tossed unlimited, Verizon could be a choice, but seeing the locked boot loader, etc is worrisome. ATT doesn't have the same coverage. And TMobile... well can be hit or miss.
Imho I wouldn't really care at all since it would also have a benefit - The network load would be relieved and everyone will have faster data.

I dropped Sprint to go to T-Mobile when the GS3 dropped a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. Every carrier has their weak spots but I feel that T-Mobile offers the best combo of data speed and price.
The one thing keeping me with Sprint was the unlimited data, but T-Mo gives you 5 gigs for 35 bucks w/ free hotspot. Sprint charges 30 bucks + 10 for "premium" data and no hotspot. I think I went over 5 gigs once while on Sprint. Pretty fair trade in my book. If my market was one of the early ones pegged for immediate LTE deployment, I may have stayed though
The things I will miss with Sprint, however, are their customer service and in-store insurance program.
I left for Verizon last week. Couldn't be happier. I had unlimited data with Sprint but only used about 100MB a month because it was pointless to try and use mobile data due to the crappy coverage and low speed in my area. I have 5GB with Verizon and that should be plenty, although this ~25-30mbps LTE is making it really easy for me to use the internet on the go...lol

I just got booted from Sprint in May, thank you 00001.prl. Spint 3G for me was <100Kbps and no Wimax or LTE scheduled for my area.
Currently testing Net10 (Sister to Straight Talk both are Tracfone). So far so Good. I've been buying the refills from CallingMart and with coupon codes it costs $46.50/month, $49 normally at CallingMart and no tax . I chose them over ST because Net10 is supposed to be able to roam and there were no complaints of being booted for excessive data useage. First month I used over 10GB, not threats and no throttling. Been getting 4-8 Mbps, there is no LTE in my area. I normally use 4GB/month but am pushing it to see if they whine.
So far I like the service. I'm starting my second month. Don't be afraid of the prepaid stigma, my phone's banner still says ATT.
I would go back to comcast land line.. lol... Seriously, I need unlimited data, had straight talk for 2weeks and they sent the message of death, had at&t & verizon felt like i was being taken advantage of, my bill was like being compared to paying a brand new Cadillac Escalade car note.. T-Mobile had more dropped calls than the pentagon "did i say that, sorry" all though sprint network crawls it's unlimited & I like that! But to each its own... Here's a better question, if xda shut down what the hell would we all phone geeks, techs, devs, trolls, mods, contributers, flashaholics do?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
My family switched to Sprint from AT&T because AT&T's customer service sucked and we wanted the unlimited data (overall our plan is cheaper). I know they can't keep it unlimited forever especially after LTE rolls out in more cities, but hopefully it lasts for at least another year or two. There's no LTE in the cities I live or go to school in yet unfortunately...
I'm getting my first Android phone (Sprint GS3) in about a week when I get home from being abroad and I look forward to playing with it.

this is a SPRINT phone so it classifies as a sprint thread......
and i left T-mobile for sprint on monday and i think i would have to go for verizon again
I've seen some threads that are close, but I wanted to know if I can flash my GS3 from Sprint for use on the Verizon network? I'm not trying anything shady, it's just that Sprint's network has me about at my end, and I was given a demo S3, and man, it's not even close.
So, I have an S3, with no outstanding contract from Sprint, can I use it with a new account on Verizon? Just trying to avoid ending up with a Sprint GS3...
Thanks
No, you can't. I'm pretty sure the Verizon version uses frequencies that the Sprint version can't. For instance, Sprint's version uses 1900MHz for LTE, but Verizon's uses 700MHz.
Even if the radios matched, it wouldn't work because the Verizon one requires a removable SIM for LTE, and that's not an option on the Sprint one.
On the bright side, there's a chance you could do an even trade with someone who has the Verizon S3, so no one has to spend extra money.
Verizon and Sprint use a different frequency between networks, the actual hardware in the phone (radio) cant pick up anything else than its been made to see. Best bet is selling sprint phone and buying a verizon model
Really? My Sprint GS3 was flashed to Verizon with no issues. LTE of course does not work but I knew that prior to flashing. My 3g speeds are pretty good anyway, much faster than Sprints.

hey dudes,
im for a few month in the USA and i got my german galaxy nexus with me. I just wondered now if u can tell me where i can get the best mobile internet plan here and for what i have to care. I read in some forum that i can just use edge with at&t? i talked with a guy from verizon and he told me they just sell contracts with verizon phones. im kind of confused. somebody was in the same situation and can help me?
thanks a lot
you need to use a GSM carrier in the US (ATT and tmobile). both have prepaid options/no contract plans. There are also other plans that are not through ATT or Tmobile, but use their towers.
you can use HSPDA if the area you are in supports it.
you need to stay away from verizon and sprint.
Yah as long as ur phones gsm, you can use T-Mobile or att. If T-Mobile has good coverage in the areas your going to be in, use there prepaid plan. If they don't, I would go with straight talk using att service.
As long as your gnex is pentaband you'll get hspa+ on both T-Mobile and att. If your phone is not pentaband, then use att. T-Mobile uses an odd hspa+ frequency that really only works with there phones.

That's not expensive at all. Maybe compared to the price you paid in Germany but for the the US its normal.

no, there are 2 CDMA models of the galaxy nexus as well as a GSM model. im sure you have a GSM model since you're in germany.
the $50/mo price is fairly common in the US. you might consider (if you have a place to ship a package in the US) straight talk. uses att's network (which is larger than tmobiles in the US) and its only $45/mo + sales tax.

tmobile has a unlimited text and 5GB of internet, with only $100 min for $30/mo.
First, I want it all, duh. Talk, Text and data - all unlimited and not the new definition of unlimited.
So which carrier will give it all and for the lowest price? Not sacrificing service too much.
What would help is your actual bill after taxes, fees, etc.
Secondly, which version of the Note II (Verizon, Sprint, etc) is most adaptable to changing carriers? Obviously the GSM ones are the easiest to switch, but there are threads of hacks to change a CDMA phone to GSM. Most are works in Progress. Which version would be the easiest to convert?
Well, your kinda asking two different things. As for adaptability, i7100/7105 probably. As far as best plans, Sprint I think, why else would anyone stay with them?

Tmobile also has unlimited data(which has great coverage btw and it's close to 4glte speeds) but it throttles you down to 2g if you pass your
High speed internet limit(unless you get their true unlimited data, which is pretty expensive).

Straight Talk - $45 +?
CDMA Verizon/Sprint's network
GSM T-Mobile/AT&T network
MetroPCS - $60 +? CDMA
Virgin Mobile - $55 +? Sprint MVNO - CDMA
Simple Mobile - $50 +? T-Mobile MVNO - GSM
*Ting - Sprint MVNO CDMA Oddball, but I may break even with their generally low prices. I am not sure of my data usage.
Also, since I am buying the Note II outright, which version for your prefered provider from the list above?
Go over 300mb of data in a day or 5GB in a month and risk losing your phone number forever with StraightTalk . They are supposed to warn you before they cut you. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't! If potentially losing your phone number permanently is not a big deal for you go with Straight talk.

I have 3 phones 2 with data i pay about 180$ 1500 minutes unlimited data and texting. Sprint service will be better then verizon by the end of this year at the earliest first quarter of 2014. LTE will be beyond better then verizon. just give it time i have sprint and i love it.
look, it depends a lot on how you use your phone. Sprint is my only option since I use over 30GB a data a month on it. If you're into switching carriers all the time, maybe GSM is a better option for you. GSM is used just about everywhere. As you know, Sprint and Verizon are the only CDMA in the US (or at least major carriers); they may be some others that may be using Sprint or Verizon's network such as Credo.
As for the phone, they're all the same. On only minor differences between the international and US versions.
No carrier is going to be perfect. Find that one that fits your needs, wants and both in the future (to your best guess) and go with it. One thing is true about Sprint, it's unlimited and they don't throttle. I would replace my home internet with it, but unless you're using data like that, they'll not going to hassle if you pay your bill.
O.K. guys, I made a decision and have a question.
I am going with Ting. I will just have to watch my data usage and if it gets bad enough, I can go back to Sprint.
Now, do Sprint ROMs work with Ting phones? Anything I should be made aware of?
It appears that you're talking about taking your Sprint Note II and intend to use it on a different carrier? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's indeed what you're doing, prepare for an entirely different undertaking & decision making process.
There are many here (including myself) that do this, and one thing holds true...if you're using a CDMA phone, the best you're going to get is 3G...that being said, I see hundreds of posts throughout these forums where most people that do it are only getting 1x data speeds. I've been very successful in getting 3g no matter what handset/carrier I flash to, but if you do some reading you'll see it's not something beginners, or even moderately skilled people do consistently so bear that in mind.
If that's your intention, then you have a much longer road ahead of you than just picking a carrier...I can definitely help with *most* of your questions on that topic, but depending on a few details, there are things that are just not discussed or condoned here in these forums.
androidjunkie71 - I really appreciate your offer of help and I'll make you regret it.
I bought the Note II from Ting, so it will already be set up. Also Ting/Sprint you can (supposedly) transfer easily back and forth between the two carriers. Other carriers may be too big of a problem for me. Also Ting supplies 4g via Sprint.
