Sprint ditched the Epic branding - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So now that Sprint has dropped the Epic 4g Touch branding from its Galaxy S II variant, will the forum be renamed to Sprint Galaxy S II?

Idk why they would, this phone is still pretty epic
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

i guess since the sgs 3 blew up they wanna change the name so normal people know its a Galaxy phone

What is this I'm hearing? It will no longer be called the "Epic 4G Touch"? Oh my...

I suspect it's a way to try and get around the potentially upcoming injunction IMHO. That and they're doing the same with Boost. (Our MVNO used the E4GT name but for marketing dropped it where possible since Japanese customers know that brand VERY well.)

[Q] 4g LTE?

I went to the sprint store today and asked them about their 4g LTE upgrade and they said that they already had a phone compatible with 4g LTE when it arrives, The samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch, now im guess they're probably wrong though. Does anyone here know if the samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch will support 4g LTE when the service comes next year?
No, the Epic 4g Touch is Sprint's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, and has been out for about a month now. It only supports WiMax, not LTE. I'm sure the Sprint rep was just assuming you were looking for generic "4g" and just referred you to Sprint's 4g which is NOT LTE.
hmm well the rep specifically said that it was one of the phones that would be compatible with the 4g LTE service but i doubt he knows anything about it. the other rep had no idea what i was talking about when i asked him about 4g LTE lol
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus that was co-announced with Android 4 (ICS) is an LTE device. I read that Sprint already lists their version of this phone on their books, so it supposedly is coming. Probably not until Sprint gets LTE rolled out though.

Well while i was at the store i asked one of the guys about the next nexus phone and he only knew it was coming to verizon first. And he didnt know when it could come to sprint, he even thought it was the Nexus Pro lol so he was kinda clueless. but im assuming it will come to sprint either in December or Q1.
i would never believe any of the sales reps they never know anything and if they do they play stupid pretty damn good
Ditto. Sales reps rarely know much of anything regarding devices coming to their carrier.
People going into the stores are pretty stupid too, it's not always the sales reps. They probably deal with idiots all day that hear about LTE and ask if this phone will still work when they switch from WiMax. Of course they don't state it that way, they probably say "will my phone work with LTE?"
I'm sure we can all agree customers in any place are - in general - stupid. Plain and simple. If they were smart, employees would be forced into being a bit more intelligent. Remember how the iPhone 4 was '4G'? Prime example.
It will be awesome if they pull a moto xoom type deal where you can send the phone in to get a new radio installed.

[Q] Any devs jumping ship this summer?

I'm not going to list roms or name names. All of you who develop, code, crack, hack, and post for us, the users of Sprint's Wi-Max flagship device, are awesome. And I normally HATE sprint customers, but you are a special class. Where are you going? Will we suffer a brain drain? I know where the Evo devs are going, and the Evo 3D devs, and the suckers who bought an Evo Design (btw, really? do you even know how to read a spec sheet?) Where are all of our SGSII-E4GT devs going? Preferably, no where. This is not a discussion about phones that do not exist, (i.e. SGSIII, also the SGSIII will be announced soon, for the WHOLE WORLD, not for the US, not for Sprint, and look how long it took for us to get the version we did, THERE IS NO SGSIII FOR SPRINT YET) I know the SPH-L710 is around the corner, but we have no way of knowing what's in it, could it be a CDMA Galaxy Note? or even an LTE SGSII? But we do have the Galaxy Nexus and the EVO LTE. WiMax devices can not, will not, and never will work on LTE. That being said, Sprint is committed to supporting WiMax through the End of 2014. Sprint is committed to supporting Wimax devices through the end of 2014. So DEVS, how long are you committed to supporting the SGSII-E4GT?
Im sticking it out til LTE is rolled out in my neck of the woods.

I just tried the Galaxy Nexus, it was alright. Don't get me wrong though, It was smooth, pure AOSP. LTE, Beautiful screen. It got really hot though after liek 20 mins of usage. I didn't even have it on LTE/CDMA. I got it replaced by sprint. Same deal... I should also mention that battery life is much better for me on the epic touch. I'm happy I came back to my E4GT. I might try out the SGS3 eventually.

Sprint Lte,Wimax phones

Question to anyone I called sprint and asked about the Lte roll out dates of course there is not much of a schedule to it if any but they said we have Lte capable devices out so I said if I purchase a lte capable device will I be without 4g until lte reaches my area they said no the lte devices can run wimax and lte so if that is the case why can't our epic touch run lte when it becomes available in our area.I think they are full of sh!t and just saying that to get us to buy a new lte phone.Unless the new phones will have hardware in them that allows them to run to different types of technology
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I guess it's possible that new phones could have hardware that works with LTE and WiMax, but I can't confirm this. I agree that the person you spoke with could be feeding you BS. It's been my experience that Sprint is a very dysfunctional company. I wouldn't trust anything they say that's not in writing!
As far as the E4GT being able to use LTE, I think it's lacking the hardware to do so. Maybe someone with more knowledge on LTE can comment.
There is no phone with wimax and lte .....none ....there is a pc card that will have both but no phone will be able to get wimax and lte ....they are 2 different radios

Fact is the Epic 4G Touch, can not and will not run on LTE - EVER. The Exynos processor is not LTE compatible, therefor the Skyrocket variants both have Snapdragons in them.
As for other phones, it would be theoretically possible to build a phone with both radios but that would be dumb, because space in the phone is tight to begin with, plus it would suck on the batter twice as much. I believe there is a rumor that the Photon may have both in it, but I really doubt it, and I also really doubt that any new LTE phones would have "old" WiMax radios built into them.
Sprint told me that our epic 4g touch will work on lte.... I know this not to be true..... Just remember that those wonderful customer service reps do not spend the time researching our devices like we do... So they are very mis informed

Looks like there will be a new Photon that will have lte capability. The present one probably does not.

It's pretty dumb that they got three different radios going at the same time they need to have more LTE coverage before they made the phone and just start closing WiMAX customers

There is ONE Sprint device that can run EV-DO, LTE, and WiMax, and that is their upcoming hotspot. That's it. I was a technician at Sprint, and to sum it up like the other guys said, it is impossible for WiMax devices to pick up LTE, and also even if you implemented an LTE modem into the Epic 4G Touch, Exynos wouldn't work with it. Not even the new generation of Exynos processors does LTE, so prepare to be disappointed when the Sprint S3 has a Snapdragon S4 (which isn't bad). I think this is gonna be like OG Evo vs OG Epic, where the Evo 4G LTE is gonna win.
Me personally? I just got my Galaxy Nexus (Sprint version of course). Trying development vs power this time. I don't like the route HTC is going with bootloader unlocks that aren't real unlocks. Plus I only paid $400 for this baby
Once LTE service his your area, and BTW, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston are all in the process now of roll out, you will still have service with 4G, but no you will not get LTE service, the performance difference is noticeable, but not enough to run out and buy a new phone over. Those who still have dinosaurs that do not have 4G capability, as well as crapPhone owners well lose service as 3G is phased out, hence the coming crapPhone 5 which is an LTE phone. E4GT well not be LTE compatible, however GS3 IS an LTE phone with the superior quad core Exynos processor that has been fixed to support LTE and benchmarked higher than any other phone currently available or set for release soon. So, if you are thinking of upgrading to be LTE ready when it happens, research your phone and it's stats, in the end, only you can decide which phone is best for you and your needs, study the processors for phones you are considering, check benchmark scores, and ask people you see with those phones their opinion...in the end your choice can't be wrong if it meets your needs

Galaxy Nexus is a decent phone. The coming hotspot is getting horrible reviews about constant LOS problems, and the US gs3, Sprint or otherwise, will have the Exynos processors, again, a little research and digging goes a long way....Snapdragon 4 is a decent processor, agreed, and as a former OG EVO owner, I believe that once again just as OG EVO vs OG EPIC, Samsung and the GS3 will prove to be the superior device, just in case though
I am getting my EVO 4G lte on release day, and adding a third line to get the Blue GS3, winner stays with me, and loser goes to some lucky bidder on EBay, be watching for an EVO 4G LTE listed by same screen name, current benchmarks on both phones show result, but I wanna test on my own. The added line will get a new whichever phone wins, and my son is super excited about his new GS3 as well...just sayin

EDIT: the new generation of Exynos processors is currently supporting LTE, that issue was fixed, announced and proven at the phones debut in London. They'll be doing another "launch" in NYC next week, and have already confirmed Exynos in every carriers version of GS3, not gonna repeat issues seen with GS2 because carriers want to mod the device to make it their own, Samsung clearly stated..."all carriers will release phone on same day, as shipped from Samsung Corp. with only addition of carrier specific applications allowed....any carriers not agreed to release with no hardware modifications will not receive the phone as well as any carrier not prepared to offer phone on date set forth in contracts between carrier and Samsung Corp." It's about time a manufacturer put Sprint AND VERIZON in their place!

And ATT, and Tmobile. I will go ahead and say I don't think Verizon will get the S3.
I'm interested to see how long it takes HTC to pull that same weight with carriers.

Do you have a source? I'm not trying to call you out or anything, I would just like to read about it some.
Pretty sure our GS3 will get the s4 dual core chip as Verizon's is has already been benchmarked with the qualcomm chip. Exynos quad is only compatible with Korea's lte atm. The LG eclipse beast will have a quad core s4 with 2gb of ram in quarter 4. Research peoples.

Radio on S III

Current Epic 4G Touch user here. Looking to upgrade but worry about the Samsung Radio. Since upgrading to Galaxy S2 from EVO OG, the radio has been very week. 3G speeds are terrible, and GPS takes a long time to get a lock.
Wondering if the SIII has the same issues.
The s3 is much better

MUCH better
I filed FCC and Attorney General complaints against Sprint over the E4GT because the radio was THAT bad.
Ive been very happy with the S3. Ive owned almost every Samsung handset that has come to Sprint in the last 4 years and I have to say, I swore off of them after the E4GT fiasco but they have won me back.

Is the Galaxy S II still the Epic 4G touch?

I went in to the sprint store today and saw a phone they were calling the Samsung Galaxy S II... not calling it the epic 4g touch. So... is would the ROMs be under the S2? Or are they still under the touch?
Still same thing my white one is gs2 and my gfs black one is eptouch still in my account page
Yes it is still a Galaxy s2 and the roms would be under Epic 4g touch section so if u go to epic 4g touch android development that's where the ROM for Sprint's Galaxy s2 are.. o.o
it's the galaxy S II epic 4g touch
the at&t version is just galaxy S II

Not sure if this was Samsung or Sprint making the call but seems it was to reduce confusion when Boost and Virgin also released it. Sprint was an oddball in having a different (and long!) name for their version of the S2.
If it came from Sprint it's the same model though, no matter what the "title" is. Can always verify against the sticker on the back of the phone as well!
