Boot with no backlight - failed on CM10 - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Kindle Fire (KF) is rooted and i have TWRP installed. I downloaded to /sd - the CM 10 build 8/24.
[ROM] [CM10] Jelly Bean ROM using SGT7 enhancements [20120824] [Linaro]
Installed via TWRP but when it boots, there's no backlight on. I can hardly make out the CM10 boot logo but it never fully boots. I leave it for 5 minutes and I have to turn it back on then its back at the KF boot logo.
Am I missing a step?

On the initial boot its really funky at least on this last build due to kernel changes when I had the black screen I just lightly and quickly pushed the power button about 4 or so times and the ani popped up it was very brief. Did you wipe good on install if so what did you wipe?

I wiped /Delvik, /Cache and /System. Do I need to install FFF via Kindle Fire Utilities?

Also if you have issues try the previous build....Well if you can get the system to boot I have a work around for fff but yes you need fff to access recovery
Did you wipe factory reset?

You get it sorted al mon?

Yes, that worked. The steps have to be:
1 - In Kindle Android - USB and copy the ROM, Gapps, Samsung switcher
2 - Root
3 - Install TWRP + FFF
4 - Boot in to TWRP
5 - Wipe everything
6 - Install ROM + Gapps
7 - Enjoy.
Many Thanks!

just dont wipe your external storage and I dont get what samsung switcher has to do with the kindle but glad you got it sorted

Accidently Installed Jelly Bean and...

I'm going to try to make a long story short
I downloaded a Jelly Bean ROM and the Amazon Update Stock ROM
I renamed the Jelly Bean ROM to Update.zip (there's my mistake)
I booted into TWRP recovery and applied Update.zip, when I rebooted I had Jelly Bean
No big deal right? I used Kindle Utility to reinstall TWRP, rebooted and was stuck on the Kindle Fire splash... No big deal right?
While trying to correct the problem, I went from not-so-bad to very terrible.
Eventually a fellow co-work built a factory USB cable for me I was able to finally get back to TWRP recovery, flashed the original stock ROM and when it rebooted, I was stuck on Kindle Fire splash again. HELP! Well I had the birght idea of taking all the knowlege I learned to get back into TWRP and was successful in doing so, I then re-flashed the Jelly Bean ROM... lo-and-behold, My fire booted into Jelly Bean
Now with all that said, I would like to know if anyone knows how to take the Kindle Fire back to stock from Jelly Bean, would it be the same as reverting it back if there were another ROM installed? As you can tell by all the problems I've had, I'm a bit hesitant...
Any direction would be apperciated
I went with this following suggestion and was able to get back to the stock look and feel

Thank you everyone for your suggestions... I was very hesitant to re-try it again, this is the first time I've had anything happen like this too me and I've been using Andriod Cupcake days!
I just hope you did a backup before updating and so forth? If so, restore from that.
Otherwise, you'll have to do a Google search and try to find a zip of the stock ROM.
Did you wipe

Dunno what your point is about returning to stock but just flash modaco instead use ota root keeper for your prime video and enjoy the benefits of the Google android market a sort of have your cake and eat it too deal when flashing place modaco on your sdcard wipe factory reset wipe cache wipe dalvik wipe system flash modaco reboot and enjoy

Wow lots of information there...
I did make the mistake of trying to flash stock rom and lost fff and twrp, I was able to recover from that by using a modified USB cable
I would like to go back to 100% stock even without root, I've had my Fire rooted from day one and don't really use any of the features that rooting unlocks, basically I use it to view Netflix and Amazon prime, play some games on it... I thought I'd use it for work but if work wants me to have a tablet, they'll buy me one! HAHA
If I decide to use the rom you suggested, I'll make sure not to use the version you said to stay away from
If I make a backup now, it's going to just backup the existing freshly installed rom. What's the difference between backing up the fire now and reinstalling the JellyBean rom?
I appreciate all your information

First of all you must flash gapps after your ROM secondly don't you have fff bootloader use that to enter recovery if you don't have fff will need to add it using kfu if you can't get kfu to see your kindle likely you will need to reinstall your drivers to do so
Daniel if you have a yellow triangle when you first boot hold the power button till it turns orange this will take you to recovery where you can flash jb gapps if you have a screen with white kindle and blue fire press your power button quickly a few times till you get a small boot menu at the bottom select recovery with your power button this will take you to recovery sorry you can't use smirkis unless you can get to recovery so completely disregard that
Thanks. I would like to flash gapps, but as I can not access recovery mode I dunno how to do it. I don have FFF, how can I install it once having JB 4.1?

[Q] Stuck in bootloop on Jelly Bean?

I need to know why when I flash any Jelly Bean rom it is on the spinning triangles for hours. This is getting really annoying as I would really like Jelly Bean. I have never installed a rom before.
Do a full wipe minus your external storage and flash it again. What recovery and which jelly bean? Please don't say cwm.

My recovery is TWRP. I've tried both the Hashcode and Jandycane build.
Okay which twrp and follow my instructions at the bottom of my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923010 for flashing a ROM if your using twrp 2.3.1.1 you need to be using 2.2.2.1 initial boot always takes time if you continue to have trouble in twrp select mount make sure there aren't checks in the boxes of system and data if so uncheck them and try reboot then system.

There's a flashable zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592681&page=21 in post 208 flash in recovery then select reboot recovery remember to thank the member for providing it. You could also restore your backup then use kfu to revert.

Stuck on Blue/White logo (not previously answered)

Hi,
So I used the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105 to set up my Kindle Fire 8.9 but I keep getting stuck at the blue/white Kindle Fire logo. I have tried this about 10-15 times and I get stuck every time. The exact steps I do:
0. Use KFFirstAide to restore device back to 8.1.4 (after getting stuck at blue logo)
1. Use KFFirstAide to root, confirm root with rootchecker.
2. Install FireFlash.
3. Place rom/gapps on sdcard.
4. Use 8.4.6 freedom boot image and and twrp 2.6.3.1 image in FireFlash, checking the right boxes (apply stack & bin if red warning is there).
4a. In a few attempts, have also tried using the 8.4.3 freedom boot image with twrp 2.6.3.1.
Then when I try to reboot normally after using FireFlash (without installing a rom yet, I just wanted to test going back to Kindle OS) it gets stuck at the blue logo. Other times, I have tried to install a rom right away (going straight to twrp after FireFlash) but after rom installation and reboot, it gets stuck at the blue logo. I have tried using cm-10.2 with gapps-jb-20130729 and also cm-11 with gapps-kk-20131209. Both of those lead me to the stuck blue logo. Since I can't even load into Kindle OS after FireFlash, I'm guessing this is a bootloader issue?
The weird thing is that, if I flash cm-10.1 with gapps-jb-20130812, it works! But I do not want this version because I want the Kindle reading app fix available in cm-11. More important, this is a new Kindle Fire 8.9 and not being able to flash the other two roms means that something is inherently wrong. I tried to flash either cm-10.2 or cm-11 after successfully flashing cm-10.1 but I get stuck at the blue logo.
I have tried many different iterations and attempts, but cannot get it to work. The previous blue logo threads are because the person wiped their data and don't have a rom on the sdcard, that is NOT my problem here. The CLOSEST thread I found was this one where he seems to have the exact same problem, but he didn't mention how he fixed it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579418
My adb seems to be working correctly, I can get the device into fastboot mode by using "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" in cmd.
Thanks for any help!
OK first question, when trying to flash cm 10.2 or cm 11 have you factory reset'd the device? I do wonder if this another selinux issue since selinux was introduced in cm 10.2. If the factory reset didn't do it I would say backup your sdcard and wipe internal storage. Easy way to backup the device's sdcard area is to run "adb pull /sdcard/ /backup" it would back it up to your c drive in a folded called backup in that example. If that still doesn't work I have a command you can try that will probably do the trick so try those things and if it still doesn't work I will hand you a command off to test.

Sorry, I forgot to include those details.
Before I flash a rom and gapps, I wipe system, factory reset, cache, and Dalvik cache. Then I flash both rom and gapps, then I wipe cache/Dalvik again, then I reboot.
Do you mean you want me to wipe internal storage as well, and then sideload the rom and install it like that?
So I tried two things:
First I wiped everything - system, factory reset, cache, Dalvik, and internal storage. Then I sideloaded cm-10.2 and gapps and flashed. This resulted in getting stuck at the blue logo again.
So I went back into twrp, and wiped internal storage only, then rebooted. But same thing happens, I get stuck at the blue logo

ok while in twrp make sure to unmount the userdata partition first, just basically uncheck it in the mounts area, if you don't things could end badly because we are basically reformattign a partition and its bad to do that while its mounted. Now go into "adb shell" in a command prompt and run
Code:
mke2fs -T ext4 /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/userdata
see if that fixes the problem, so far that tends to work to fix selinux issues, kinda wish there was a button in twrp that would perform that command or just make the internal storage wipe do that, thats like a actual format of the /data folder/partition instead of just wiping the contents.
Sorry, can you clarify what you mean when you say go into adb shell?

well you need a copy of adb, look through topics i have made and there should be one about a tutorial for pushing a rom onto the device, grab teh adb zip file i posted with it and extract it somewhere like to a folder on your desktop, and to make things simple hold shift and right click the folder that the adb executable is in and hit "open command prompt here" and in the command prompt that comes up run "adb shell" then run that command i mentioned.

I'm back in town and I'll try to follow your recommendation. The first thing I see is that the link to Hashcode said is to 7 "HD. Does it work for 8.9 HD also?
The other question is that Hashcode says: you need to have previously installed the 2nd bootloader and send to him original link to 2nd bootloader install and TWRP 2.6.3.1. Also he says this is a flashable. zip file for installing in your current version of TWRP. Then I think I'm in circles because I must have the old TWRP to install the new, but my problem is with the installation of the old because I stuck on blue / white logo when I try it.
Perhaps I can follow the instruction to install the 2nd bootloader as he suggest in his original post an then install the new 2.7.0.0.zip instead the old 2.6.3.1. zip. Is correct?
You can just pull the IMG file out of the zip and boot into fastboot and flash it without flashing everything else that was done in the entire 2nd bootloader installation process.
7" images are not compatible with 8" and vice versa. Not sure if I'm helping much as I kinda just got up and went perusing the forum while half asleep.

11 is nice, has less ram consumption, though I personally haven't gone past cm 10.1 because of the lack of stock cm with tablet ui on cm 11, I'd have to grab a different ROM to do it.

Nope, I don't do much streaming from the browser, I have vlc installed and I watch all my anime with sanime pushing the url's through vlc. And when I want to watch TV I have a time warner cable app since I have service with them. Suppose you could try the "request desktop site" button in the browser. [Q] Update From 4.2.2 To 4.4

Hey guys,
It has been a long time since I posted.
My Kindle fire is on CM SmoothRom v1.3
Kernel version 3.0.69 [email protected] #1 wed mar 13 12:18:03 EDT 2013
Twrp v2.4.4.0
I'm planning to update it.
1) what rom should I update to ? I'm looking for something fast which doesn't have any major bugs and its compitble with all of the new things.
I was thinking about InFriction ROM v11 or HellFire™KitKat
what do you guys think ?
2) what would be the exact stages I need to take in order to update ?
do I need to do something with FFF or do I need to update TWRP ?
please advise!
thanks in advance.

for cm11 (and likely the other 2 you listed) you will need to update TWRP recovery to 2.6.3.x or newer
several ways to do that
1. download http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/blaze/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-otter.img
copy to fire's sd card, then install with Flashify
2. Download http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/otter/recovery/flash-zip/zip-otter-twrp-2.6.3.0-selinux-recovery.zip and install in old TWRP
3. more options in my list Updating Twrp
If Gapps are not included in rom make sure you install a gapps version that works with the rom installed
I've been using http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip with Cm11
edit; Hashcode recommends gapps-kk-20131119.zip

I haven't tried either of them, currently using OFFICIAL CM11.0 + 3.0.72 Kernel for Kindle Fire [NIGHTLIES] which is working well for me.
for cm11 (and likely the other 2 you listed) you will need to update TWRP recovery to 2.6.3.x or newer
several ways to do that
1. download http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/blaze/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-otter.img
copy to fire's sd card, then install with Flashify
2. Download http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/otter/recovery/flash-zip/zip-otter-twrp-2.6.3.0-selinux-recovery.zip and install in old TWRP
3. more options in my list Updating Twrp
If Gapps are not included in rom make sure you install a gapps version that works with the rom installed
I've been using http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-kk-20140105-signed.zip with Cm11
edit; Hashcode recommends gapps-kk-20131119.zip

I downloaded http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/otter/recovery/flash-zip/zip-otter-twrp-2.6.3.0-selinux-recovery.zip
and installed in old twrp, after it said the installation was successful, I pressed "Reboot"
Now my device wont boot
I press the power button and nothing happens.
how can I fix this ?
no power or bootoop?

I pressed the power button for 3 mins and it suddenly started, everything seems fine now.
I decided to install InFriction ROM v11 [SPEED]
and it requires TWRP 2.6.3.1, can you give me a link? I would like to install it from the old TWRP.
after installing the new TWRP I only need to wipe x3 and I can flash the new rom ?
I dont need do something about the kernel for FFF ?

what does 'update recovery required for install' mean

Its been over a year since I installed a custom ROM on my phone, and was about to install one when I ran into something I need an answer for. Below are the install instructions for a ROM and Ive got everything ready to go (everything is backed up, etc) but am wondering what the bold items below mean.
Downloads and installation
+ Download the Latest ROM from HERE for d2tmo or HERE for d2usc
+ Download the GApps from here
+ Copy the ROM to the SD
+ Copy the GApps to the SD
+ update recovery required for install of android 4.4.x
+ Boot into your recovery
+ Back up your ROM
+ Enter recovery
+ Make full wipe "include formating system/data"
+ Install the ROM
+ Install the GAPPS
+ Reboot - the first boot can take up to 2 minutes
+ Recommended to Reboot again after ROM is up for the first time!
+ 2 second to up ! and 1 second to restart or shutdown !
Not sure if this info helps, but Ive got CWM version 6.0.3.1 installed on my phone.
.Thanks!
It means you need to update to the latest version of cwm or twrp recovery or the install will fail.
