Hi,
My name is Adeel and I recently upgraded from a Google Nexus One to a used Samsung Galaxy S2X, which I really love. It's running the Darkside ROM, which is alright but nothing too fancy. One thing I did notice was that when i turn the phone off, it doesn't turn off (the soft keys stay lit, and I have to remove the battery and turn the phone on to turn it back on) which is weird, but i'm sure it's a glitch in the ROM.
Anyways, flashing different ROMs is just a hobby of mine, something I like to do in my free time. Since I'm not familiar with any ROMs in the development section, I would like your opinions on what is the most stable ROM (good battery life, and with the least issues). I have heard the new Jellybean ROM is good ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852105 ). What are your thoughts on that? Any help would be appreciated to get me started because this phone was already rooted, and I don't really want to brick the phone doing any bad flashing. I was very comfortable flashing on the Nexus One though.
Thanks a lot!
uh oh - I can't even boot into recovery. When i reboot into recovery, the screen turns black and the soft keys stay lit... (no sd-card in the phone). Any help?
If you hold the power button for long enought the phone will restart. That way you don't have to do the batt pull.
For roms, I'm using darkside right now and don't have that problem; but I was using Infamous before and its really good too.

I used Darkside v8 as well, and never had the problems you have with the buttons' lights.
Right now I'm on Jedi Mind Trick v7 and I think it's as good if not better than Darkside. It's veeery smooth and veeeery fast
Edit: about the boot problem: wipe cache. I think it's a common problem with darkside (at least older versions)

Yeah I was able to get into recovery through ROM manager and flashed jeddi...the boot problem was fixed with the cache wipe.

JB is alright but not quite there yet. Many users are experiencing random reboots and SODs (sleep of deaths, when the phone goes into sleep and doesn't want to wake back up). On top of all of that, I usually experience a lockscreen freeze...
Most stable would probably be CM9 Final/Stable.
And most stable TW based ROM (at least for me) was Jedi Mind Trick v7.

What ive learned since i started flashing is to flash them all and see which one works best for you and ur phone. Just because a rom works very well on an s2 doesnt mean it'll be the same for another s2.
That being said... The best performance ive had is with darkside rom and infamous. Juggernaut v5 is actually very good too but its GB and updates have halted a long time ago.
Try them out and good luck.

CM9 Stable, or AOKP 7/15 for aosp. I don't rock any touchwiz roms anymore so can't help with those.
I suggest going back to stock and see if the random reboots continue. Darkside V7 is not known for random reboots. If they still continue, could be hardware related.

Well sure, as far as testing if its hardware related, it makes no difference.

This is the only one I can find, will get you back to GB Stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
You can then use Kies to upgrade to LDE GB then ICS stock if you want
Hello. I have a Desire HD which was rooted with Gingerbread and CyanogenMod 7 when I bought it. I heard of upgrades from a friend and decided to update to Android 4.1.1 and it is now running Jelly Bean. Before I upgraded I was happy with many of the features on my phone such as the volume output through my ear-buds being louder. Now that I have upgrades I have allot of issues.
My system info:
Baseband Version
-12.39.60.19u_26.06.04.06_M
Kernal Version
- 3.0.42KangBang-Kernal-g24b00f1
AOKP Version
- aokp_ace_jb Sept-01-12
Build Number
- JRO03H
My main issue is the lagging. Sometimes when I'm using an app or just have my music open my screen flickers or loops slightly, and on most occasions it freezes until I press the power button on the top to make the phone sleep. Another issue is back when I was on Gingerbread I was able to control my music using my Volume Up and Down buttons. Now I can only control the actual volume instead of being able to switch tracks. I also use Textplus app which allows me to call people via my 3G. Back when I was using Gingerbread everything was fine, now when I try to call someone my screen just turns black for minutes at a time. Why is my phone acting so bad compared to the old Android I had? How would I fix these issues aswell. Thanks
Its important to understand that JB is still in development and will never be officialy released for the desire HD. With experimental ROMs comes issues. The best JB currently out IMO is random blames jelly time. He puts out updates at least once every 2 days and the one he put out tonight is very stable for daily use. As were the last few. If you would rather not deal with any issues and just want the full functionality of your phone then I recommend just sticking with GB ROMs. Gingerbread is the last supported os for your device by HTC so it will have kernels that have been made specifically for the dhd. Though there are great devs out there that know how to make kernels so try different ones out to see what you like. You can always return to stock if you don't find anything.

Your on AKOP - try Jellytime 99.9% of that works well for many
and if you do dont for get to do a full wipe, system, dalvik etc and grab Gapps as its not included in the rom
Jellytime by randomblame is a great rom. I was using it for a while. Its buttery smooth. His version of jellybean was the only one I used. However I went back to aospx ics. The reason why is because he pushes out update every other day. I grew tired of loosing my information. Other then that great rom.

Gotta ask, did you flash back CM7 to see if your phone is actually ruined?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 4G using xda premium
I don't think you can really blame Jelly Bean for "ruining" your phone...
1. It's not "ruined." It sounds like your issues are mainly some performance issues and some additional functions; the Textplus thing could be an app that hasn't yet been udpated for Jelly Bean. Also, if you don't like CM10, simply flash back to CM7. Since (I'm assuming) your phone boots and has a working recovery, you can do that easily.
2. It's not Jelly Bean's fault. If you're migrating from CM7, which has had a lot of time to mature and is supported on this hardware, to CM10, which is brand new and not even supported on this hardware, performance issues and missing functionality must be expected. That is why your phone is "acting so bad compared to the old Android you had."
3. You're using an older build. You said you've installed AOKP. Neither randomblame nor synergye have updated their AOKP builds in quite some time. I don't know of any other dev with a Jelly Bean AOKP for Ace (Desire HD and Inspire 4G). Try updating to a newer version: JellyTime CM10, Unofficial CM10, or codefireX (CM10 with lots of additional options). And this is assuming you flash properly (full wipe and check md5sum; I recommend using 4ext).

So your just flashing new ROMs on top of old roms. With no wiping of anything. I've never done it that way. I always wipe. But if I did a deity flash what kinda issues would I be looking for if their were going to be any. I'll do it if I don't get issues.

I usually dirty flash (wipe cache and dalvik only) first and see if there are issues. Usually there aren't, but if there are issues (examples: mobile data or wifi for GPS doesn't work, graphical glitches, laggy), I then do a full wipe and flash. If there are still issues, report.

It only works with same ROM updates. Issues would be force closes or updated features not showing up or worse. All i do for a dirty flash is wipe cache and dalvik. Leaving data keeps the way you setup your desktop and all apps plus data. I haven't had any problems though with jelly time. I have encountered problems with other ROMs though just doing a dirty flash.

Dirty flash works for most ROMs I've tried, but one thing I noticed is if you do it long enough, you may start to see issues. I noticed a drop in performance of MIUI ICS rom after a couple of months of dirty flashing on a weekly basis.
Having said that, I'm currently on JellyTime by RB. Haven't had any issues. Everything works fine for me. Perhaps the only issue I have with JellyTime is that it's feeding my flashing addiction
Well after doing some reading I understand abit better thanks. I haven't tried flashing back, but I have flashed the Team Kang rom over CM10 in vice versa to see what the problem was. I will look into Jelly Time and hopefully everything will be fixed.
Agreed flashing can be very addicting. Once I started I was hooked.

ptmr3 has a zip to flash back to stock on JK3, just saying.
my 2 cents
I stay with jedi mind trik 7 (I'm to lazy to update ) and after about 3 weeks I haven't had any problem.
I just added the tw calendar.
I moved from stock because of skype, that didn't work properly on stock ICS, but I have to say that this rom is really smooth and nice, therefore I think you should try to reinstall again everything before move to another distribution.
A tip, I reinstalled all app, instead of using titanium or similar, it's cleaner and in the end not so long with the market.
I suggest also to have some fun with google now
Dark side is definitely the hands down winner in TW roms. Besides, Jedi and all those other ptmr roms borrow heavily from tdj. Just saying.

Afraid I have to agree. My warranty replacement S2 came yesterday, preloaded with 4.04. I think I'm just staying here for a while. At least until I get my upgrade next month.
I had been on Paradox for probably 6 months and never really had many issues with the gingerbread roms, most are very stable. I tried jmt and sith as well as Beastmade, in a few different versions and flavors and they were ALL buggy. Most are putting way more time into themeing than into to trouble shooting. Read the posts...most issues are blamed on a bad flash or you used the wrong recovery method...NEVER the rom. To be fair I never got to try a Darkside rom as my phone went back under warranty... supposedly developed the bad power button thing and started boot looping and freaking out. I'm still not sure it wasn't rom related as the way it started it had nothing to do with the power button...that was the biproduct of a really unstable Sith rom.
All that said, if my stock 4.04 starts to lag and bog down with background bloatware, like my original s2 did that sent me here in the first place, then I will probably be back to flashing...or on to the S3.

Exactly why I haven't even touched any if these new roms. No offense to any devs but our trusty ol' developers are almost all gone. Hi there. As the title suggests, this is a question to those members who've tried a bunch of different ROMs. Can you please suggest the most stable one out of the ones that you've had a chance to try out, one with the least amount of bugs. Please don't go around posting annoying comments like "why don't you try a bunch of ROMs yourself". If I had time to try different ROMs, I wouldn't be typing this right now. I really need a stable ROM, and any suggestion is appreciated. I am currently using Jedi Knight 4, and it keep messing up my data connectivity every 15-30 minutes. It would go on an off non-stop every 3 seconds, and it would only stop if I turned the Airplane mode on and then off. It's really annoying, and I really need something stable, since the next few weeks are going to be incredibly busy for me, and I will need to rely on my phone a lot. I don't care whether it's ICS or JB, as long as it's stable and functional enough. Good battery life would be a huge plus, though not absolutely necessary, anything within decent range would suffice. Thank you in advance.
Have you tried to flash another radio?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
I have not, but that's not my only problem with the ROM, just the most annoying one. I still need something different. Plus I don't really think that the radio had anything to do with it. It only started happening after I flashed the ROM, and that ROM wasn't too different from the rooted 4.0.4 update that I was using prior to that, and I never had problems with my connectivity with that one. Either way, maybe I'm wrong, but in that case, might you suggest a good radio?

I suggest to flash again the same radio that you have.
When I flashed All-dev AOKP version, my wireless got messed up in the same way as you are experiencing. Also sequential roms flashed after I noticed this issue did not fix the problem.
There is nothing to lose if you flash the same radio. Maybe only 1 minute of your time.
After I did this, I no longer experienced issues with my wifi connection.
I've tried many roms but i always go back to juggernaut its just stable and smooth its the daily driver for me. I wish team Kang will ever go back and edit that rom and add new themes and good update.<-------------- this is the answer untill they ever come up with a good stable release of jb roms they look cool and much more choices but a headache.

I already flashed a newer one, seems to be perfect at the moment, but thanks for the suggestion.
Curious what everyone else out there does. I flash nightlies on the same rom for a while, but I only stick to that rom for a couple months. So I guess a hybrid(you can pick multiple choices)
Probably every two or three weeks.

I wait after a major update to Android until a stable ROM appears, so maybe every 3-4 months.
I was quite a big flashaholic for some time. But the thing was that I, while being on a different ROM, forgot how fast and smooth stock actually is. When you're using a different ROM, placebo effect takes care of the rest. Suddenly, 1 day of battery with 3h of screen time seems amazing, while in reality, stock can do just as well. And since I don't miss any of customization, I'm good. So, to answer your question, I'll stay with stock till I buy a new phone. No more custom ROMs, no more flashing. And I Iove it.

i don't understand how people flash roms every day? do they just not have any apps to reinstall or what?
Titanium back up pro. Push one button, restore all apps and data in minutes. Just don't do system apps and you'll be fine

I used to go from one ROM to another but finally just settled on CyanogenMod. Now I must admit I dirty flash all the time, I ,mean I flashed Cm10.1 over a stock ROM with no issues it ran perfectly. I haven't used Titanium Backup in a while. In addition I use CyanDelta to flash nightlies so I don't really have to worry about reinstalling apps.
Miui updates weekly... so usually every week so long as the build proves to be bug free.
On my sgs2 I flashed different ROMs every month, but on the gnex all I've been using is miui (stock android is boring to me, plus I like all the new features).

Iam a flashaholic to the core.
I try out each rom's each version
the max. time i stayed with a rom was 5 days , cant remember which one maybe cna or bamf.
Anymore I only use stock and rasbean. I used rasbean till 4.2 came out, used stock unrooted 4.2 til about a week ago and am now back on rasbean for the minor added features.
I agree with the poster that stated stock gets just as good battery and just as smooth as custom though. I simply flash for fun and the additional features.

I think I'll keep with stock 'till warranty passes like 1 year or something... BTW I'm getting the phone tomorrow
Depends on the ROM. If I like it I'll stick to it for a while.

For those staying with stock... Don't you flash your kernel also?

I find stock kernel the fastest and most reliable. Sure, I could get better battery life with custom kernel, but since I mostly charge my phone overnight, 10 hours of battery doesn't make much of a difference. And stock just works. You don't have to worry about SODs or reboots or anything. Perfect for me.

For most of my time with the GNex I have been on stock but with a custom kernel, though the stock kernel does work really well I got used to the extra things like headphone volume boost, colours/contrast, fast USB charge, etc. If anything I favour those features over battery life, though to be honest I have never experienced bad battery life no matter what ROM or kernel I've tried.

I run the CM 10.1 nightlies, and only clear my cache and my Dalvik cache before each flash. My apps are not affected by the frequent updates. It's only when a version change occurs that I have to fully wipe and reinstall everything.
I was a major flashaholic until I found xblack, since then I haven't flashed anything else, so been like a month. I'm trying to live a life that doesnt consist of messing with my hone daily. I found something super stable that works great, so I've stuck with it. Only thing I've flashed since is the latest zen kernel
I'm battling a flashahlics addiction and the bad news is I can't afford to get cured at Passages Malibu but I flash a new one like every 2 weeks since I stopped flashing every single daily
Sent From My Maguro With Cm10.1 & Franco Kernel
I've been flashing EOS nightlies as they are released, I was flashing francos kernel too but I'm using stock at the moment.
