I first posted this help request on Nokia Support Discussions on August 13, but amazingly I received no reply to date (I can't insert the link since I have no privileges for that as a new user).
I am experimenting a very weird and annoying problem with my Lumia 900. Some weeks ago, the volume level during the phone call became suddenly very low and barely noticeable. I can hardly hear the other speaker both calling and receiving a phone call. Apparently this behaviour is restricted to the phone call feature in normal mode. If I press the loudspeaker button, for example, I can hear the conversation perfectly as usual. Same using my earpiece: I can hear and talk without any problem. Moreover, the audio output appears to be OK outside the phone call itself: when using apps, music, games or any other feature except the phone call, I can't spot anything abnormal in the volume level, everything appears to work properly.
I would like to point out that:
1) the volume level during the call is set to the max. level as usual (10/10)
2) the master volume of the device, as set though both right-hand buttons, is set as usual to the max. level (30/30).
3) I turned off and on the device, I removed and reinserted the SIM card many times since then, unfortunately the problem persists
4) I did not notice any other problem before this happened, nor the device suffered any "catastrophic" event (such as drop, water or similar).
Basically, I can only hear a speaker during a phone call either keeping the loudspeaker always on or using the earpiece. It's like my call volume were set to 1 or 2, while it is actually set to 10.
Can you help me determine whether this issue may be software or hardware related in first place? Unfortunately bringing it to the Nokia Customer Care is not the first option for me at the moment. I bought my device in Europe, but I am currently in South America. I may consider using the local Nokia Customer Care and paying a fee, but first I would like some clarifications from engineers or advanced users.
Finally, a guy on another forum suggested me a hard reset. I confess I never did that before, is there any step-by-step instruction for this? Or does it make sense to wait for the next software update through Zune (currently I have 8779.12201, a new update however has been already released and should be available for my language within days or weeks).

You can wait for the update or try a hard reset. A reset will restore you phone to factory fresh, so you will lose everything currently stored on the phone; photos, apps, messages, settings, etc. So be sure to sync with Zune to backup photos and videos first, and sync with your Live ID mail account to sync contacts. Restoring email accounts, contacts, apps and media are all easy, but could take a few hours (depending on how many apps you have). If you prepare for the reset (as you can) it makes things easier.
If your other option is to send you phone out for service, that could take weeks. So while painful, rh hard reset is the "quick" fix. If your volume problem persists after the hard reset, then you know its hardware related (be sure to check before and after installing any apps to eliminate any possibilities). If so, and after telling Nokia Care that a hard reset didn't solve the problem, it might just get you a replacement. Quicker than sending it out for an inspection. Hope you get it worked out.

It makes no sense to wait. I assume you are still under your initial warranty, so do the hard reset...after, as jimski says, you save off any pics or music specific to the device. You will lose SMS and SMS history , and any game scores.
Use reinstalled to reinstall apps after the reset, to get or apps installed more quickly.
Hard reset is a harsh way to test this out. However, if you test the phone before reinstalling apps, you cut to the chase real quick. If this is a hardware issue, do NOT wait for a fix. Replace the device and be done with it.

I'll start by saying, the Hard Reset will not force you to re-flash your phone. It just resets it back to stock settings. This is in fact the easiest and best way to try to resolve problems with your phone. To do so, go into your settings menu. Go to About, and scroll down to 'reset your phone', tap that, and follow instructions. This will delete all your data and messages, so be sure you've backed up first.

One other thing to check (and what I suspect to be the problem) is the speaker itself. It sounds to me like you either have a failing speaker, or something is in the speaker hole. Look closely at it and see if there is dirt/lint/chocolate/peanuts/earwax/etc packed in the speaker grill. It's pretty easy for this to happen. Try blowing it out with canned air and see if that helps. Otherwise, it's probable that the speaker is going out or the connection is failing.
Good Luck, and be sure you decide before your warranty is gone. Send it off ASAP if the above items don't help. PS: Flashing back to stock may void your warranty, so decide if you want to take that chance, rather than wait for repair to return it.

One last question. Would you please clarify whether Lumia 900 has one or more speakers? The speaker grill on the bottom of the device has apparently no noticeable dirt or other foreign material inside it, anyway I will try blow it with air, maybe it will help. One thing I can't explain to me is why everything appears to be OK with the volume level except during phone calls. As I mentioned in my first post, the audio output with music, apps, games etc. is normal. When I use the loudspeaker in phone calls, no problem. So the question: is there any other speaker in Lumia 900 which is used for phone calls, for example on the top of the device? I don't think so, but if yes, this would definitely point to a hardware problem of THAT speaker.

There are in fact two different speaker outlets. There's the one at the bottom which is speakerphone, games, apps, etc... Then there is the one at the top in that little slot. That's the one I suspect is either clogged, or going bad.
EDIT: Do you have a case installed that might be blocking that speaker?

Got it. That makes (unfortunately) perfect sense. Chances are then that the issue is actually at hardware level

Wow! I thought I was going crazy....'cause I've had the same issues for the past few months. When I got my Lumia 900, I was pleasantly surprised that my in-call volume actually DIDN'T need to be set to max (10/10), and I usually dialed it back to 8/10. Nice...but it began to get quiet so that even on 10/10 it was difficult to hear callers -- especially if I was standing outside. I thought it had to do with a ROM or firmware update, but so few people noted the same problem that I just assumed my phone was faulty.

Anyhow, I found this thread just 30 minutes ago, read through your story, and (for whatever reason) thought it thru more fully. I realized that since I keep my phone in my pocket, maybe the thin ear speaker grill (just above the screen) is full of lint?!? I grabbed a soft, dry toothbrush and took about 30 seconds to brush it out. I could actually see the debris clearing away. Made a test phone call and voila.........my earpiece volume is loud once again! Easy fix. Almost too easy

So i recently bought ebay Lumia 900 they are going for cheap =) loving it!
In my case the speaker was working great actually the first week it was way too loud kept it under 7/10 all of a sudden now
i cant hear almost anything below 8/10 and when i go all the way to 10/10 it sounds muffled like a blown speaker already tried cleaning the grill
very carefully it had dust but that didn't help and also erased averything from the about settings
.
Anymore suggestions? Im in the latest update and obviously no warranty .

How do you to a hard reset of the phone. I am ready to try that to solve the low volume problem. I literally took the phone out of the box on Thursday last week. I am getting very frustrated.

Well, I've never connected headphones to my Defy (oft give reason for this failure) but today my handset's speaker works no longer. Actually, I hardly ever used it, prefering instead to use the (excellent) speakerphone, but where more privacy is desired there's a need to use the handset's speaker, so I will be asking for my Defy to be replaced/repaired, BUT, I've customized it extensively (it's rooted, and all) so I'm wondering what should I back up from it, and how, to later restore it all to the replacement device, and be back to where I'm now?

1- do a nand backup in order to restore it when defy is repaired.
2- do a full factory reset from recovery.
3- Flash you version of original firmware from http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
Thank you both for your suggestions. Here's one thing that still gives me a concern; what if the reason for the failure is somewhat software related, or a hardware/software combination. Then, restoring en masse the original software could potentially overwrite the software part of the fix.
BTW, I'm not going to rush to exchange the device, and chance getting another one that would fail again until this whole affair settles down. So far Motorola has been pretty mum on the issue, even if seemingly responding in the afirmative to the guy in Germany who took appart a failed device and determined to his satisfaction that the problem was with how the speaker is soldered. His contention was that it was the interaction between the speaker and the headphone jack. OK, this seems like a reasonable conclusion, BUT, I have not used headphones with my Defy nor have I ever dropped it. The speaker simply worked in the evening of one day, and it didn't the following morning after the device was sitting on the nightstand during that time.
Update: I stopped by a T-mobile store hoping to see if they had phones from the new production runs and exchange mine. The store had no Defys at all, so the clerk arranged for a warranty replacement. It will be cross-shipped. Holding my breath now, but it sounds like in the States T-mobile is repairing the phones. I was told that my replacement will arrive without the Sim, the memory card, or the back cover.

So, I received the replacement phone. Happy to say that it's a new unit from the new production run; mine is the BT09 series. Also, having the phones side by side, I see no difference in build quality (there was a post suggesting that the newer phones were of lesser built and lower quality materials); both phones feel equally solid, with no rattling switches, and the materials (plastics) look and feel the same.
Now, it turns out that restoring my old setup on the new phone will take some doing. Since I was not using Blur for my e-mail accounts (except one Exchange account for work) I needed to recreate my Google accounts. Nothing to it, but the Market apps are a different matter; only the paid apps were "remembered". Should I just restore all my apps from Titanium Backup backup? BTW, the Blur version is still the original one, before the OTA latest update.
Alright, this is very disconcerting, my faith in LG may be gone.

I have had this phone since launch and have been on this forum since the day it was started. I have rooted, debloated, and changed launchers. I have no dislike for LG, so please do not call me a hater or a fanboy.
PROBLEM:
Starting a couple of days ago, during calls the person on the other end would only hear static and clicking. I finished the conversation through text. I called somebody else the next day and it worked fine. Today, I was talking to someone for about ten minutes then the static happened and I had to finish the conversation in text. Since the person I was talking to is a close family member I troubleshooted and kept calling them, and then a phone of one of one of my roommate's so that I could hear the problem first-hand. It sounds HORRIBLE. Since then I have used a voice recording app to test the problem.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
I have done the following to determine that this is indeed a hardware problem:
-Turned off all data
-Unlocked ALL "debloated" apps
-Restarted many times
-Put only the original battery in(I have two spare official batteries)
And the problem persists.
QUESTIONS:
-What should I expect will happen with the return/exchange process?
-My original battery has the pink water damage thing turned pink. This phone has never touched water, I think it happened because I have kept the battery in my wallet, which probably has gotten sweat on it. Will LG try to be a **** about this?
-Should I unroot and otherwise restore this phone to stock? If so, how do I do this?
-Is there anything else I should know?
-I need a phone to use, if I cut my SIM card to fit into my old iPhone 4, how will I get it back in?
Thank you, and if there is a possibility I could just return it I may. I LOVE this phone, but I have never had a microphone defect in any other phone I have ever owned. I am starting to wonder how such a large company like LG can allow something like this to happen, rightly so, I am very unsure of the longetivity and overall "completeness" of this phone.
The only other quick and easy thing I would suggest to narrow down the issue would be to try a wired or bluetooth headset.
It's pretty easy to find micro SIM adapters for sale online for 1 or 2 dollars.
I feel like I have some comforting responses to many of your concerns.
First of all, you should have a 1 year manufacturer's warranty against hardware defects. You should be covered.
They will most likely look for the water damage indicator on the battery, but if they are all official batteries then the store clerk won't know the difference. If it says LG on it then you're probably fine.
I saw an "unroot" option in SuperOneClick, but I cannot verify that it's functional for the Nitro. Yesterday was my first root ever. I would find a way to unroot it to be honest. Then do a hard reset and take it in.
As for the SIM going back to the iphone 4, it can be done. I just pulled my SIM and snapped a couple of pics to show you how to cut it and still use it. I didn't cut it myself, it was done by an ebay seller that reactivated my Unlimited Data plan and mailed me the card. He thought I had an iphone 4 so he cut it. I then told him I didn't have the iphone 4 so he set it back in and sent the whole card. It's worked in several phones since then.
I say if you love the Nitro then don't worry. AT&T should honor the manufacturer's 1 year warranty. I've never dealt with it so I don't know how they'll handle it, but they should take care of you.
Just a heads up, the battery is supposed to have pink + signs on it. When those bleed and the sticker is just an ugly mess of pink blotches, that's when it touched water. Not sure what yours looks like but I figured there may be a chance you are seeing the pink + signs and thinking you are screwed.

Thank you, what I was seeing was indeed the little pink crosses.
@gmkelly - thanks for the tip, I tried it out and my wired mic does work.
After unplugging the mic, I set it aside and when I checked again, the nitro's mic was working. I made a call and halfway through the issue started up again. Since then, I have replicated the issue multiple times using the recording app. The mic will work, and then usually stops working again after a few minutes of it being on, usually about 3.5 minutes. Thus the problem is intermittent, and I can replicate the problem for an AT&T rep.
What I really need to know is what to do about it being rooted.
EDIT: Dammit, I am having trouble replicating the problem now. Is there a chance that something in the headphone port is causing this. Ahh, I have a program to write for a C++ class and this is not a good time for this to be happening. Been recording now for 10 minutes and the mic is still working fine.
EDIT 2: Does anyone think showing a recording of the static to an AT&T rep be enough evidence? If anyone wants to hear some static you can get an earful here.

Oh btw, I recalled something an AT&T rep asked me when I was sending back the Atrix for an RMA. He didn't ask me to check the battery for water damage by looking at the pink crosses, he asked me to look for a white dot on the phone itself. The same white dot is on this phone. U can see it right above the middle screw to the right of the SD embossed sign. That white dot will change color (I forgot what color he said, maybe pink too) if the phone is water damaged.
I think nowadays the battery moisture indicator does not really apply anymore. At my job, we have tons of BB batteries that has indicators showing moisture damage but works perfectly fine. It's most likely just because the batteries get warm n moisture can build up by it.
Ok I'm sort of confused. Is this only happening with something plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack, or are you referring to the actual built in mic on the bottom of the phone?

anywho, do u have an at&t authorized repair/warranty center by where u live/work? I say bring your phone n recording over to them n show it to them, let them hear it n explain this happens sporadically. If u want, tell them u can call their phone there n let it sit for 10 minutes or so until it happens again. But just make sure it can be recreated in their presence though. Otherwise u should just call 611 (or is it 511...411?? ) talk with them n wait till it happens over the phone lol!

The mic in question is the Nitro's built in microphone.

Thanks, the Chicago Warranty center is a couple blocks from my work. It looks like I may be able to get "same-day, face-to-face warranty and technical support." This certainly is good news. And thanks for the info about the water damage indicator, white gold!
I guess my main concerns now are backing up and unrooting.

Easiest way to unroot is to download superoneclick 2.3.3 and click the unroot button with usb debugging enabled on the phone. I have done it several times without fail.
Which method did you use to root it? I know in the SuperOneClick program there is an "Unroot" button.
use malninion's unbricking solution to unroot your phone and restore it to factory if you are concerned about a root getting in the way of an exchange and are unable to deroot. also, all exchanges of this phone under warranty are for refurbished units, LG policy.
Refurbs are fine if they still hold the 1 year warranty. Do you know the details?

The LG rep and the ATT rep I spoke with yesterday said the refurbs are better and they carry full warranty. I *thought* I heard the LG rep say our phone has a 6 month warranty, new or refurbed but it very well could be 1 year. Both reps said all refurbished phones are tested v. 10% of new phones are tested. Not sure how that makes a refurb better but that's all the details I was given re: the exchange policy.
Also, I went through the troubleshooting of mine on the phone with ATT, that agent issued a return authorization that I could have used locally by just bringing the phone in and getting a replacement. I got the impression that there would be no on-site attempt to fix my phone, just a visual inspection of the glass, case and water damage marks.
I was able to fix my phone so I didn't have to go through with it all.
Maybe it's 6 months on a new one. I think I heard 1 year, but I guess I'm not positive on that.
It does not matter which method you used to root your phone (doomlord or superoneclick), superoneclick can unroot the phone fine without restoring the phone via Mal's guide. I use doomlord to root and superoneclick to unroot on my phone.

Or, you can simply remove the super user icon from the app drawer and they won't even know the phone was ever rooted (unless they go into applications and search for it, which I HIGHLY doubt they will even bother). About backing up, how many apps do you have on your phone? Does it really matter if u have to reinstall them again? If it does, then get TiBu free edition n manually accept every reinstallation process.
As for contacts, sync them all to your gmail acc, n your emails should already be synced anyways. For sms/mms, get go sms pro (free) and it has the feature to backup your sms/mms to the phone which u can then back up to your computer.
Don't bother with restoring to factory settings, just hand the phone to them, removing any icons of apps that might indicate you are rooted.

I haven't seen any threads pointing out the issues I've been having with my Lumia 900. For context, my Lumia is a pre-order cyan model that has been updated via Zune to the latest firmware.
My observed "unique" issues:
Pressing the Windows button, especially inside of games act CRAZY. Pressing the Windows button does nothing - the phone won't go home to the tiles. This is consistent across most games. Sometimes it will simply go into "voice" mode, but then am unable to cancel the voice by hitting back. It just sits there, no matter which key I mash. This is not consistent...sometimes it acts this way, sometimes it acts normally.
Pressing the "back arrow" key...pretty much identical to the above, except instead of "voice" mode, I get the app chooser. When in the app chooser, hitting the Windows key does nothing. At times, the only way to exit some apps is to hit back arrow into app chooser, choose another app, then hit the Windows key to go home. Again, only in games.
My Lumia randomly picks up capacitive button input, even when my hand is nowhere near the buttons. This almost manifests itself as a "Search" key press. Again, this only seems to happen when playing games! What is strange is that I can reasonably consistently repeat this behavior by touching the metal bezel around the camera.
Why in games only? Reasoning seems to suggest that Nokia may have slipped some detect code into the OS that alters capacitive button behavior when gaming to address a major WP7 complaint regarding accidental key presses exiting games. It's well within Nokia's rights given they have a customization exemption from Microsoft. That said, I've heard of no such "feature" existing, nor have I heard of anyone else having the issue.
I'm likely going to go back to the AT&T store and request a new device, because on top of this, my phone has the annoying vibration "buzz", as well as the phone generally seeming less responsive and reliable than my old Focus.
Thoughts?
I just tried in a couple of games to verify, and I don't have any of the issues you've described. I'd say get it swapped out.
I have none of these issues either. I also recommend a swap out.
I'd also suggest returning it.

I just returned my cyan phone. No problem from the AT&T store at all. One sales guy was unaware of the problem, but the guy next to him was up to speed. They had cyan un stock and was going to do a straight swap, but I was aware enough to ask about white...they still had 2! Cyan would have been a straight swap, but for a $35 restocking fee, I could have the white. On top of that, he did I could return my cyan bumper case, so id be $20 out of pocket for a phone that wasn't available in the $100 rebate timeframe, yet still keep the rebate. Done deal!
FWIW, fit and finish in the white phone is noticable better: no loose buttons, no vibro rattle and the gloss white looks great. I'll know more on the soft key issues after I reinstall more apps.
I'm a very satisfied customer.

Does your new phone not have that issue? Here's a test: play a song through the built-in speaker, wait 10 seconds...do the capacitive buttons not respond properly, or act as if you've long-pressed them? You can "fix" the issue by plugging in some headphones.

My new phone works perfectly, given the repro steps above. Playing music through the bottom speaker and waiting over 10 seconds, the capacitive buttons work just fine...no long press behavior, at all.

Interesting. I did a side-by-side comparison with my co-worker -- same phone, same color (cyan), purchased at the same time. His phone is fine, mine is not. I can repro the issue at ANY TIME by simply playing a song through the speaker. I can fix the issue at any time by simply plugging in headphones. Wacky.
Looks like I need to swap my phone, which kinda sucks.

I thought so, too, but after having the gloss white, I am happy I made the switch. I noticed that the matte finish cyan was starting to hold dirt, requiring cleaning to keep it looking good. I think that the gloss white will have no such issue.

Well....after testing my co-worker's phone (that didn't have the capacitive button issues), I decided to head to the AT&T store and swap my phone. The sales rep (at AT&T) sympathized with me...as he also had the same issues. His was a "launch day" phone, and he noted that only the earliest phones seemed to have this issue, though not all of them.
Anyhow...new phone...no issues, thus far. Bummer that it required a handset swap, but what'cha gonna do! Glad to have a healthy Lumia 900 (in Cyan) once again

My internet connection is very unreliable. It'll lose data connection out of no where. Dedicated camera button will not always work. Usually I have to wake the phone up first for it to respond.
Internet explorer is rubbish. Sometimes it will load the page with hella glitches.
This is the second lumia I've gone thru. I even did the software update.
As much as the higher ups want me to sell this phone I refuse to. Maybe I've just been unlucky twice but IMO they need to extend the $100 credit for another month.
I gave this phone an honest chance but as soon as the HTC one comes out I'll be ditching this phone.

Those are *NOT* normal issues. I would say swap it out once again...
Mine has been great. None of the regular issues I've read about. The only problems I've had is the disappearing keyboard, which is an OS problem not a hardware problem. Even though it's supposed to have been fixed, I still have this problem with my Radar, HD7, HD2 running Tango (refresh), & my 900. I digress, my bad, I've also just started to get a weird white flashing on my IE9 address bar. It flickers in & out, just started yesterday & continues to do so everytime I'm online.

All of this is the same for me, except this is my first WP7 phone.
Just had to try it out, but have decided it's not for me. HTC One X when it comes out, then trading for One S or Xperia S..
Anyway, I want to add that I used the headphone jack for the first time this past weekend, and I noticed that there is a TON of background noise when playing sounds, but goes away a few seconds after audio stops... so it is very obviously coming from the phone itself.
NOT impressed.

Hmmm....well, at least you get to replace it. Good luck with your One. Noticed it too has a nasty bug it shipped with. But, thats OK, its Android, and is not held to the same standard as anything Windows. Wait a minute....didn't the iPhone, the latest one, ship with a Siri bug or something...nahhh...couldn't be, I have to be remembering wrong. We all know that HTC and Samsung absolutely deliver the most impressive, long Lasting, bug free devices in the universe, with a solid reputation for innovation and length of use.
But, really, good luck with whatever choice you make. I'm sure you'll be very impressed.

haaaaahhhhhh I know what you're getting at, but at least android has a huge development community to take care of just about any issue that pops up
If people were hacking the crap out of the 900 (which I'm sure will come in time) then I might stick with it just to see what is possible. But for now, it just isn't for me.

And that needs to be ok. I left the Android community because I believe that many of the OEMs rely on the dev community to get somethings right. And I'm really not ok with that for everything.

This is typical of the early phones that had glitches. My cyan had all of these issues...my white 900 has none.
It's a bummer that the 900 had so many issues out of the box...pretty inexcusable, actually. But having had the experience of using a first gen device, I knew that it wasn't the OS, it was the phone.
When your 900 is running significantly worse than an old Focus, it's the phone.

You know though....every phone, every brand has these...'glitches'. Its only a matter of 'if' they happen to you. Every phone mentioned on any forum, as being superior, has its own list of complaints that a significant number of people subscribe to.
I also think that if anything, Microsoft is held to a different standard than others. Just as Apple is begining to take heat for the slowing down of innovation. Basically, more people, more interest, more issues.
Even Android is running into problems based on quality of hardware, and the lack of testing on all hard ware in general, instead relying more on the dev community to help them out.
None of it is excusable, but I 'notice' that only Microsoft seems to be held accountable for such things.
Anyone here ever get an Android phone that was basically a piece of crap? I'm sure we can all supply examples....for me, the LG G2x, the Motoroal Bionic and the Motorola Droid 2x, as well as the HTC Sensation. The nicesst words I can use is....Rubish. But, like everything else, it only matters if it happens to you. There are fans of those phones all over the place. Yet, for me, POS's.
Not everyone likes every phone. I like Windows Phone. My son does not. He said to me....Dad, its nice, its ok, but it doesn't wow me. And I want to be wowed. That needs to be ok. He didn't say Microsoft was crap, and, Windows OS sucked. It just wasn't for him. Even though his last phone, the Sensation, had just stopped working, he ran out and got an HTC One-s . Go figure.
People that have problems with any phone, should be disinclined to venture in that area again. But, I repeat, it appears that people hold Microsoft to a higher level of accountablity in the Mobile area, than say....Google.
Just my Opinion.
Very true alodar1! I love WP OS and all my phones running it. These things will be fixed & for me, at least, they are not deal breakers.

Hello All,
First off, hardware: I9250, stock ROM build 4.3 Build JWR66Y, not rooted, but bootloader is unlocked (CWM might be on there, it's been a while).
I noticed a few weeks ago after upgrading to 4.3 that I can no longer make phone calls without resorting to Bluetooth or Speakerphone (speaker ok, people can't hear me on the other end. I tried calling another phone I have (old N1) and I have to literally yell into the little hole at the bottom to start hearing anything in the N1). I have seen this problem being discussed with other phones (mainly N4) but not much on the GN.
Tried using an app called SoundAbout to disable wired headset detection, no go.
Tried booting into SafeMode, no change. I thought maybe using Volume+ might be incompatible with the OS upgrade or something.
1) Is anyone else having this problems? Supposedly this was a problem on 4.2.2 which got fixed on 4.3 for N4 users....
2) Anything else I can try before trying to downgrade to see if it fixes the problem? Factory wipe is something that I want to avoid like the plague.
3) Is there a way to test the hardware? Before I try and buy a microphone assembly?

I have the same issue. After a nasty drop and some rain, I had to replace the screen. Now it works wonderfully except the earpiece during calls emits a lot of static and I can barely hear the other end, and they can't hear me.
Strangely though, with a headset or while on speakerphone, both directions are perfectly clear. I'm betting someting in the motherboard (i.e. audip processing circuit) is fried, because I've already tried replacing the earpiece.
Anyways, hope you find your issue, and let us know. Otherwise you'll have to stick to speaker or grab a new phone.

Yes, I can rule out physical damage from falls, as I am anal about keeping my phone pristine. I haven't dropped it, and its protected by a good case in case there was some unknown shock.
I find it hard to believe nobody has ever come across this problem, even if not on a GNex. I'm just biased against any product made from LG (huge history of poor build quality outside of asia), and I'm pretty adamant about having a Nexus phone, I'm going to have to wait until Nexus 6 and hope that it doesn't go to LG yet again since motorola is eneligible for Nexus award (go HTC! the N1 was awesome).
I'm really hoping that someone can come up with a solution to this problem. Back in September, my mother purchased a s6 edge+ under the At&t Next plan. Everything worked fine until November, when calls started dropping and people were saying that either they couldn't hear my mother or she couldn't hear them. There's also a lot of static when making calls.
The first thing we did was take the phone in to an AT&T store for repairs and they figured it was an issue with her sim card. After replacing the sim card, the problem went away, but eventually came back. Going back to the store a second time, a representative suggested taking it to tech support. We did and they couldn't do anything except get a warranty replacement. However, when the replacement came, it had the same issue.
Now my mother is practically ready to rip some heads because basically, no matter who higher up she talks to, they're saying that the only thing they can do is keep sending replacements. There's a complete refusal to offer a different type of phone or any other kind of help at all.
My question is does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? If not, is there any other route she can take or is she stuck paying for a phone that is defective?

Well, the only thing you can do that I know of is to try and sell it like it is or for parts.
Be honest in the description but be satisfied with the income because its actually pretty high.
1. remove all personal info including all synced accounts to the phone
1a. Make sure you take the sim too
2. soft reset
3. hard reset
4. clear the cache on the device
5. reboot to make sure everything runs smoothly
buy a new phone.
That's what i'd do. Not a XDA expert. Maybe if you hold onto it for a few months a solution will come up.

There issue could either be, A - service where she is at is lacking for the phone, and/or it is how she's holding the phone; holding near the bottom by the base of the phone, it does cause interference with talking on it when using. Try having her holding near the middle to avoid call interruptions or even using a headphones for calling. Reason for holding it differently is because the antennas of our phones are located on the bottom, hence holding the bottom of the phone will cause call interruptions. Furthermore, the only thing that AT&T can do is offer a replacement.

For the most part, she uses a Bluetooth headset. I also use at&t and call quality is fine for my Nexus 6p
Yes, but she has a 6 E+ correct? As I said, the antenna of the phone is located on the bottom and thus holding the bottom WILL cause call quality to be little to none leading to dropped calls. It sucks so I use a headset to avoid that and/or I hold it differently. That is the only thing 'bad' about it.
Yes, yes, comparing 'other' phones isn't going to help to justify call quality; it's redundant. I gave the two best options to fix the issue; hold the phone differently than the bottom and if it still doesn't work normal, keep on bugging AT&T for replacement(s). Those are the options. If you don't like either of those, (just my hunch ?) sell it and hope to get enough money for a new phone.
