Hey everyone I just rooted my girlfriends phone and I was wondering. What is the best rom to have with great battery life? I tried a team nocturnal rom and cyanogenmod but they're not that good. And with cyanogenmod, I hear the phone vibrate during calls. It's a bit annoying.
Anyone have any suggestions?

This is best suited for the Questions and Answers section. This is Development and I can see how you thought this was the right place but it is not. This is for roms, mod, and developmental threads. Please post in the right section next time.
Now to your question please keep in mind that what works for me might not work for you as every evo is different. The best way to know is for you to try different rom and kernel combinations till you find what you are looking for.

miui with tiamat or save zen. I never use 4g so I don't care that it's missing. I like sense a lot but miui looks/feels just as good if not better. it's a seriously great ROM! Fast, stable, easily customizable and themeable. And battery life is the best i've had since running myn 2.2. Try it out.

of course MIUI gets the best battery life.
nothing on it works, so your phone just sits there as a paper weight, and that hardly takes any battery to do.
depends on usage...
I sit most of the day without touching my phone. with synergy rls1 Id go 2-2 and a half days between charges if I was home and almost never touched my phone, but Id get 3-4 hours(if lucky) if I had to use it.
With CyanogenMod 7.1 Im seeing 13hours of life if I dont touch it, but Im getting more like 7 of use

HERE This has alot of great names behind it, have not came across anything yet, battery is very good though! Kernel is tweaked so you can overclock it if needed.

Finally someone with a similar experiance to mines. Im also using synergy and if im not using it the battery life is excellent. I have installed juice defender and also freedom 0.9 agreesive kernel. I use battery monitor widget to see what kind of drain im actually having. I check the history and using all of the above and if phone is just sitting on the table my avearge reading is 28mah.
If i start using apps and doing stuff on my phone though im lucky if i get 4 hours of use on it also i dont use 4g at all ever so thats not a factor. I just wish i knew why the drain is so high when using it. Ive also done hte battery recalibration so thats not the problem.
Decks can be pretty good and/or runs overclocked pretty well and i still push about 20 hours out of it.

I've never overclocked a phone though. Don't know how comfortable I'd feel about doing it, especially not knowing how to get the phone back to stock.

I have tried almost every rom for the evo and I look for stability, internal memory, battery life, and speed. For a gingerbread rom, I keep coming back to KingsROM Alliance SENSE 2.1+ 3.0 HybriD 3D " The BREED " with ChopSuey v9.1 kernel for good battery life. That is my daily rom. For Froyo rom, I use Koni ELITE Series III with Netarchy 4.3.2-havs-more-universal and I get amazing battery life.
I'm currently looking for a ROM base to modify to my needs. I really like the features available in cm but I'm not sure if cm10 (stock) is stable enough for production use yet. Does anyone have experience with this?
Been using it for about a month now and have no issues what so ever, I recommend the builds by Euroskank as he adds some really useful features.

I threw CM10 on mine and I had some radio issues. I don't know the technical details but the signal wouldn't lock in completely. The signal notification on the top bar would never turn blue no matter how perfect signal was, the wifi wouldn't lock in blue either. Reverted to stock for now.
Other than that it was awesome!

FYI - even though your bars are gray, you still have an active data connection. When they turn blue it means they are connected to googles servers

I just got my Verizon GNex about 3 days ago and right when I got it I rooted and put the CM10 preview ROM on it. I haven't found one thing wrong with it yet. Works great for me

You can also try Paranoid Android which has CM10 as its base and this ROM has been very stable for me. This ROM can be used in stock phone layout, phablet, or tablet modes.

How is your battery life? GPS? Still no bugs?
I'm still running Pete's Bugless Beast and its so perfect but just no mods or customization. I want to be able to customize but I don't know that I want to risk losing my bugless JB...
Has anyone compiled cm10 from source with no customizations other than the camera, NFC, and GPS files? How is that build? I'm going to be modifying it for personal and perhaps submit back.

GPS is perfect. Locks immediately. Battery life is nothing to write home about. I have the official extended battery and with decent use I might get 8hrs if I'm lucky. I'm up for ideas on other JB ROMs for Verizon that have better battery life.
Everything is perfect except for the battery. Almost afraid to flash another ROM because everything on the CM10 preview works for me.

I've been using XenonHD ROM for about a month now and find there are many features that were present in CM9! Runs fast and smooth!

JTFC, that's awful. How does it compare with what you had on ICS? I get decent battery life on JB (CM10), but still slightly lower (10-15%) than on CM9, but 1.5 to 2 days is still possible with my use + 3 hours screen on or so over that time. This holds true for all the JB ROMs I've run. 4-5 hours of screen on time over a workday of hard use is still possible for me, but idle drain seems to be hit/miss, some nights 0.25%/hour, other's 1%. Sync seems to be a more of a battery eater on JB, and I haven't bothered running Google Now since the first day or two I ran JB.
Shall see how today's JRO03L build performs.
Running vicious rom, the cm10, great with Franco kernel and his app. No complaints. Only thing is i can't get play music to download to my phone from the cloud

Unfortunately I don't have anything to compare it to. The GNex was a warranty replacement for my old Thunderbolt. After I got the GNex I immediately rooted and threw the first JB ROM on it I could find. I will keep searching through various threads in the development forum and see what I can come up with.
Oh and thanks for confirming my suspicion that my battery life is below average. The weekend is here. Plenty of time for experimenting

I highly recommend Better Battery Stats if you don't have it already. There's a free XDA version posted on the site, but the Market version is well worth the ~3$ also. Sync and location services (GPS or Google) and Google Now seem to be the biggest offenders on JB. I run sync and location sparingly.
That said, the GN is definitely no battery queen unfortunately :crying:
I am a long time Android and long time CM user. I have been using an LG G2x for way too long and finally got fed up with it. I have a brand new Galaxy S3 arriving tomorrow and am trying to figure out what to do when I get it.
For those of you have have used both the stock OS and CM 10, what are the advantages of each? By rooting and installing CM 10, what stock Samsung features will I lose? Are there any you think I might actually miss? So just in general, I was hoping someone who used both the stock OS and CM 10 for a decent amount of time could explain to me exactly what I will gain/lose by rooting and installing CM 10 on this phone. Thanks!
Not a good thread at all to start up man, just try them out and see for your self. Every one likes different things so it's kind of hard for us to just assume your needs... you know what I mean? Lots like both for different reasons, some always revert back to a stock rom some always go back to a cm rom.

Leave it stock but rooted for the first few days to see what you think. Many think the extra features and that its stable and fast are worth staying stock based. Still a lot of others opt for cm or aokp regardless. Just give em both their fsir chance!

That is why I didn't ask if I should flash CM 10 or not. I very simply asked what the differences were between stock and CM 10. I am wondering what features I will have with stock that I will lose with CM 10 and vice versa. That is a very fair question to ask of people who have already used both. I am trying to avoid trying both by going through a hassle and having to reinstall my programs and reconfigure my settings multiple times if I don't have to.
You lose all samsung stock features. That should be a no brainer. No motion activities, no smart stay (natively) no touchwiz, no wifi calling. Vanilla stock is what it always is, clean, no bloat, and super fast... what I said wasnt in any way being rude. It was exteremly truthful, and to the point.

Wifi calling doesn't work on CM 10? I have been using it on CM 7 for my G2x.
So do you miss any of those Samsung features? I guess are they gimmicky or actually nice to have? From reviews, I have read that stock is really fast, so not sure if I gain speed by going to CM. Have you noticed speed improvements with CM 10 over stock?
I know but its so deeply integrated into framework and settings now its a pain. And no I personally don't miss those gimmicky features, but allot of people do. I stick to tw roms, because of battery. It always seems to last longer on stock based roms for me. Otherwise I prefer cm based roms. Lets just say I'll be moving to cm as soon as I feel it is closer to 100% in my eyes. Or the nexus 4 lol. And the only way I can feel it being 100% is by me testing it, not asking others. That's what I meant with my 1st post.

I wasn't concerned with battery use, as I consider myself a battery expert. I was more interested in performance and features that were exclusive to TW and AOSP. They are so different that the only way to really get to know each other is to test drive them yourself.
Now I am on LiquidSmooth (AOSP base) and I love it. I am getting massive battery life, have tethering (I thethered my tablet to is almost all day yesterday after a bad flash [on the tablet not the phone]), Theme chooser springs a bit of life back into the eyecandy part. <--sometimes people flash not bc they want a new ROM but a new look .
Will I go back to TW? Sure. I tested Doc's ROM before he released it and I like it plenty enough to run it as a daily driver. But this is XDA and what are here for?
What do we want? A custom ROM

I personally never ever ran a touchwiz or sense ROMs on any device I've ever owned for more than a day. I just missed the full control cm ROMs give. Ever since my HD2 I've ran cm7 up to cm10 on my s3. I really never notice the features being lost from a tw ROM mostly because I don't use them. Never really thought their "advertised" features were all that.

I am running on a CM10 based rom and the only stock Samsung feature I miss is the Smart Stay. Everything else was just too gimmicky

I stuck to stock ICS TW for a couple of days and I didn't enjoy it.
It just seemed too much and I wanted a closer to stock experience.
Made the switch to CM10. Greatest thing ever.
It's simple, effective, and works in pretty much every way that I would like.
The only thing that I miss from TW is the Messaging app.

Do you use Skype, Vox, or any other VOIP app? If you do, then don't flash CM10, AOKP or any other AOSP based rom.

May I know why? I'm right now with the Galaxy SI and on CM10, hoping to get the S3 and on the same dilemma. Right now my Skype works well on the CM10, Viber works only on speaker phone.
Having tried cm 10/aokp as well as TW ROMs for extended periods of time, I can say the following:
Although at first missing a certain TW feature might seem like a drawback- the feeling comes from what you're used to, and after a few days or week you will likely forget those features which you previously had which you thought were so important. For me the TW calendar (s Planner) was the big thing I was missing- since for a while I really couldn't find a good substitute which looked as good and performed as well! Finally I found one, so now I don't even compare anymore, but even if I hadn't found a substitute I'm sure I would have moved on at some point.
Point is, base your choice on the majority of the benefits that you'll get from the respective ROM. Personally, I like aokp/cm10 precisely because of its overall simplistic aesthetic ( I'm in love with the native jelly bean fonts used in the notification bar) and its native ability to theme. In terms of performance and extra tweaks, there are plenty of custom TW ROMs which are on par with the aosp ones (IMO). So I think it comes down to the overall feel/look, and pure personal preference.

you will lose wifi calling, you will lose the ability to upload music straight from the music player to drop box, you will lose your mind, however, once you run a JB ROM and use google now for the first time, and you will go ape over the amount of customization available to cm10 users.
honestly, used "stock" for about 3 weeks when i first got my device back in july, flashed cm10, and never looked back. words cannot describe how amazing and feature-packed a cm10 ROM is...
flash hellfire 1.3 (if you don't mind the red), and give slim bean a shot if you don't want the red. I have had nothing but positive results with those two.
also, follow my guide in this section for the flashing process.

WiFi calling
For me WiFi calling is the biggest feature, and extremely important. I don't have T-Mobile signal in my lab, where I spend most of the time and WiFi calling is the only hope. This is why I'm staying with the stock for now.
But if anyone can show me a way to get WiFi calling on CM10, I will be really thankful. Hate the stock rom from the bottom of my heart!!

The camera on cm10 is whats holding me back but once they come out with cm10.1 based on JB 4.2 then i think ill root and rom my phone.

Hello hello!
So, I've had my evo for ages, (ages in modern tech terms of phones evolving, not an actually long time by human means) and, long story short, got a new phone, don't have the new phone, back on the evo.
I have the twin turbo GTR ROM and the battery life on my phone sucked. It wasn't the ROM, just letting you know that's what I have if it matters for this question!
So, I decided upon getting an extended battery. (I think 3500 or 4500 mAh, I can check when I get home, the case is fairly stuck on right now) and....I can't figure this thing out. The guide said that the phone will charge to 1,500, say 100%, but not truly be full, so you will need to leave it plugged in.....So I did, and upon unplugging it.....dropped, 99, 98, 97, all within about 10 minutes (normal for the evo, not for this new battery I would assume).
So, how do I make this work? What's the trick? I assume I can actually change the battery....settings(?) in the phone. I remember while in recovery seeing something about resetting the battery settings, and I vaguely remember something about DO NOT TOUCH THAT EVER UNLESS YOU KNOW WHY. Would now be a good time?
TL;DR; New extended battery, tips to get the most use of it? Also, since I am rooted and recoveried, what tricks can I do to make it properly read the new battery and it's larger mAh size.
****If you have a good ROM that you must recommend, or kernal, I am okay with that. I have no love for anything on my phone currently, kernel. rom, recovery, I'll replace it if you guys have good suggestions.

First off, you want an SBC kernel on your ROM. Mason G if you have gingerbread, which you do, or Mason I if you're on ICS. Mazwoz's if you choose JB. Flash the appropriate kernel, charge the battery. Leave it on the charger for an extra hour for the hell of it and use it normally and let it drain fully. Recharge to full and it should calibrate. If not, there are plenty of battery calibration apps in the market.

Awesome thank you! Also, if you or anyone knows, when i was using my evo last, they just started getting ics on it. I remember 4g was broken, and it seems now with the ics and JB roms, it's the same story. Are they planning on finding fix, or is it known that 4g will mst likely only work on GB? Either way I'll reflash my stuff, make sure I have the right stuff, charge, drain, and see how that goes. I would love to use JB simply to see if project butter helps my phone. The only phones I've used it on are at least 2-6x more powerful than my evo, so I can't tell how much project butter is helping, versus the few extra Ghz and cores.

Yeahhhh. That's why I switched to my S2 but long story short, here I am again with my Evo.
Have you used the JB ROMs? Does the project butter make it better than a GB ROM that is tweaked for speed?
I think tomorrow at work I may spend the day trying new ROMs so I may just see for myself, but input would be appreciated! Also, thank you for all the help so far

I've tried most all JB ROMs. I even developed one. They run well but still not as well as original gingerbread. The 2.3.5 kind. Not the CM7 kind. Never really liked it. Personal opinion though. If you want a perfect Gingerbread ROM, check of Decks ReLoaded or some of MBQsniper's work. As for jellybean, try the ones I listed. You'll find something you like, guaranteed.

I have used all the jb ROMs out there. They are usable if you over look the small things. No FFC, GPS, a few glitches in video. Miui is not good yet. But most all builds before 4.2 are very good and 4.2 will be there before long.
If you want a good sense with all bells and whistles sense 3.5 works. Only glitch is htcfacebook.apk but FFC GPS BT everything works. On 3500 battery 1 get 24 hr heavy use 12 hrs streaming videos. Normal use 4 days and minimal use up to 8 days. Same goes for the sense 1.0 ROMs. For me I have not had much luck with 3.0 sense.
I have flashed almost everything out over the past 2 years I have had an evo.
As far as special tricks for extended battery there recall are none. Just plug it in and use it.

I have seen a few people ask this question- (will project butter help my phone?) Well project butter isn't actually a thing, it isn't an app or a system, its more of an idea. And the idea is to make the system run as smooth as butter. You can't dig through your system and find Google.projectbutter.apk lol. It is optimizations and implications for ease of use within the new phones coming out, and likely what they implement won't help on our evos because of our aging out of date hardware.

Are you sure? I know it isn't one thing, but I very clearly remember reading that google did some sneaky tricks to get things running more smoothly, but I felt like it had to do with just basically making the hardware work more effeciently than it currently was.

I read stuff basically like that. I suppose the more correct question would be, will putting a jelly bean OS on my phone make it run smoother than my current GB ROM. I usually understand that the newer ROMs on older phones tend to mean more lag and whatnot, but if the project butter tweaks make it run BETTER than the older ROMs, I may want to use it.
However, I am getting my S2 back tomorrow! That will have JB on it once it's back in my hands, and that thing was silky smooth with ICS so I'm not worried.
As a general question though, have people noticed differences from ICS to JB for speed, responsiveness, and smoothness?
Hey guys, I have an old Galaxy Nexus which is currently unrooted and on stock AOSP Jelly Bean. I'm from Europe so not sure about this Sprint/Verizon mumbo jumbo. It's started to get pretty slow and battery life is quite appalling. I've visited the development forum but it's all quite overwhelming - with loads of ROMs and variants of those ROMs, plus a bunch of kernels.
I dont really care for tiny customisation or the extra features of e.g. CM, just about performance and battery. Perhaps the only thing I'd like is Screen Mirroring (which, as far as i can tell, isn't enabled on the latest Galaxy Nexus SlimKat rom). Can anyone reccomend me a good ROM/Kernel that will extend the life of this once great phone?

You are using a maguro if you are wondering I'm sorry but the only answer is to try for yourself.. Just download a ROM and see if you like it. If you dont then move on to the next. Same with kernels. If you want maximum performance or battery tweak some stuff with trisckster. Nephilimps settings are a good starting point.

Fair enough, i might give that a crack. In all honesty, I'm sure there are multiple solutions to my request, I'm just wondering what other people had grown to be happy with, so I'm not stabbing wildly in the dark.
I'm gonna say fancy kernel and Slimkat is a great place to start. I use fancy with max frequency at 1036MHz for good battery and performance. Slimkat is small, not too many features, and it has most bugs ironed out, so it's stable. If you really want good battery, then I would use a 4.3.1 rom. Take your pick there, I recommend Vanir.
