I was tired of the constant crashes and poor wifi performance on the ICS leak so I tried to downgrade. Only way I found that worked was to restore a nandroid. Every other method, including flashing stock rom, just left me on the SAMSUNG screen. Anybody else discover a way?

I think its the bootloaders because a nandroid probably restores the bootloaders and the ICS leak changes bootloaders

Perhaps through KIES? I read a few users had problems flashing ICS and they could only fix it by doing an emergency recovery through KIES. Maybe you can dowgrade that way, too?
Strange, had a Nandroid of gingerbread and downgrading worked.

Alright now is I have gone from ICS to gingerbread but not stock. I used inception gingerbread rom.
I'm sure the wikis fresh factory phone root procedure in the sticky thread method with Odin install of at&t or rogers root guide should work.

6/30/2012:
Sprint SGS3 received the LF9 OTA update from Sprint today. If you used our previous root method, applying this OTA update works. After applying the update, you need to flash the latest version of our Root .zip in order to retain custom recovery and root status. You may also want to upgrade to CWM for SGS3 LTE variants version 4 as it contains an important fix for backups.
Reportedly LF9 fixes the Google Wallet not Certified issue.

No, although you need Root .zip v4 after you upgrade to yesterday's OTA.
Funny thing is I did not have a problem with wallet before I tried to update ...the update failed in cwm obviously

Looks too easy but can't wait to root
ODIN'd back to stock, found my security update inside the internal cache (stock recovery) and was able to run it from there just fine....yup, had unrooted and run the update; it downloaded but failed to activate.
ODIN'd cwm/rooted then opened wallet, activation went fine........after, ran the Store update: now I get the Unsupported Device message (4 rooted devices)............go figure!
** still, wallet works just fine! Rooted users, just ignore the message........all wallet users should be aware: your working wallet needs to be reset direct from the open app (not cache/not data) PRIOR to flash or device hard reset. Otherwise you may end up borking your wallet and bricking the secure element. So, prior to flash: open wallet then navigate Menu/Settings/Reset google wallet.........now you're free to flash.

Does the flash actually fail with Odin? Or are you accidentally letting the phone reboot before booting into recovery. The Step-by-Step directions are there for this very reason. If the phone boots up without flashing our Root .zip v4, the stock kernel will rewrite the stock recovery back to the phone and you will have to start over.
Question? Do we need to install busybox and let it update?

Thanks Agat! Just an FYI, you can factory reset on this version but it still has the issue where it won't install certain apps from Play Store. Gate Guru for example. I confirmed this on 100% stock FI03 with this kernel. Gives the Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card error.

This app thing is starting to really bug me.
Just tried Gate Guru and it installed without any problems.
Can't try Where's my water (to big for download without wifi) as I know that's another app that causes problems.
I'm running my FH23 rom with FI03 repack kernel.
FI03 repack has been flashed with mobile ODIN over my 0.5.4 kernel which didn't cause any problems either.
I'm starting to think that there might be more to this problem besides kernel itself.
May be some scripts or tweaks that are included in other roms do add something to this.
Same was with FH13 and FH23 repacks. Was able to install any app while running my roms which are tweaked very little.
I don't even know now what to say or how to fix a problem since I can't recreate it on my phone.
Please any one with same problem let me know what rom are you running with it and how did you install it.
Did you guys perform full wipe or installed current rom over previous one?
Just give me as much info as you can and we will try to get to the bottom of this problem.

Try it on my stock FI03 Rom and see if you can reproduce it. I can reproduce the problem on every version of the repacks on the stock Roms. I have only tried it on the completely stock Roms installed with a complete wipe. They have nothing but root and busybox added.

I'm usually on my roms.
Can't stand stock colors.
As mentioned above will try to run on completely stock.
Let see what happens.
I am installing the actual stock tar right now to see if it does the same thing. I want to make sure it isn't something wrong with my Rom.
Edit: Ok so I used desktop Odin to install the full stock tar provided by sextape. I let it boot completely. Booted into Odin mode and used Desktop Odin to install the repack kernel. I let it boot up again and signed into play store. Tried to install Gate Guru and received the same error message.

So, as of RIGHT now, is it safe to install this repacked kernel or do Play store downloads not work after getting Agats kernel on a completely stock FI03 setup???????
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (SPH L710) from Sprint that I rooted a few months ago. I'm not too familiar with rooting, but knew I needed to do it to utilize the Wifi Tether app I wanted to use. It's worked pretty well ever since, only have to re-start the wifi app sometimes to make it actually connect.
For the past week I've been getting tons of pop-ups advising that there's a new update I should accept and install. I would assume this is Jellybean. So, I have a few questions:
1. If I'm already rooted and I accept this, will it delete my root?
2. I have SuperUser v. 3.1.3 which has a check box "temp unroot" If I check this box then allow the over the air update, will it allow me to go back and uncheck this box after the uprade to JB, thus restoring my root?
3. I researched apps in the Playstore and came across one from Voodoo called "OTA RootKeeper" if I use this, (or can I even use it on this device?) will it allow me to simply accept the OTA upgrade and then it'll re-root the phone afterwards?
4. How can I disable the OTA pop-up notice?
Please excuse my elementary questions... I know enough to read a basic set of instructions to get the root on the device (I've previously rooted a few Evo's and unrooted one all successfully), I also know how to Google questions I have and tried using the search feature here, but didn't really see answers to the questions I have.
I'd appreciate the assistance!!
It's not jb, but if your stock rooted just use root keeper and temporary unroot.

The update they want me to load isn't JB? It's pretty big, like 85MB... Any idea what it is then? Think I can simply accept it and it'll install or will I need to check the temp unroot box in SuperUser first?

its the li3 update. Would temp unroot. you need stock recovery too with no altered system files. Would be easier to use one of the ones from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099 or here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923
Once rooted, you cannot accept OTA updates due to having a custom recovery. You can get rid of the notification, without installing anything or losing root, two ways (that I know of). The easiest is by accepting the OTA and letting it fail.
Possibly the hardest/riskiest is to edit your build.prop and change everything that references the older build to the newer one, ie changing all LG8 references to LI3.
Updating is, once rooted, based upon preference. You should always investigate the changes from one version to the next, & decide if those address issue(s) you may have experienced. Updates will generally address one, or all, of the following: kernel performance (could impact battery life, hardware performanc, etc.), baseband performance (could impact cellular reception, network speeds, wifi performance, bluetooth, etc.), firmware updates (could impact overall hardware performance & functionality), &/or system software updates (could impact hardware/software performance, user interface).
The beauty of being rooted is that you have the choice of addressing all of the above at once, or being selective and updating only the items that address what you want them to. For example, you can choose to update your kernel only, or to just flash a new baseband & update your modem.
I choose to run a custom ROM based on the LG8 software build, paired with the leaked LIF baseband & firmware, and the stock LI3 kernel. I've found this combo to give me the best battery life, cellular & wifi performance, hardware performance, and stable day-to-day UI.
If you absolutely just have to have the latest of everything, use one of the methods described in the previous posts.
Good luck, and have fun!
EDIT: PRL can be updated regardless of root status...just an FYI...

That would be the easiest way. Get all the updates, then root once. But, you will need to use one of the previously mentioned methods for all future updates, like JB. When you get to that point, I have found the easiest way to do it is to get rid of the notification by letting the update fail, then waiting for one of the nice people here to offer a rooted version of the update w/kernel (odex, not deodex, unless you plan on developing stuff yourself) and an AIO (all-in-one) firmware update like here. You can just flash those through CWM or TWRP.

@jmdatcs: Thanks a lot for the reply. I will apply all updates and then will do the root using qbking77 method which I guess is the easiest or should I use the qcom toolkit?
I do not want to flash any custom ROM right away as it has ICS by default. I will get the custom ROM for Jellybean once its available, through CWM or TWRP as you mentioned.

- For android 4.3, there has been a lot of talk on the developer section, and from what I can see, the major bugs/issues have been fixed. Like the ROM not rebooting correctly. For those using 4.3, is this true?
- Also, from what I understand, this was due to the recoveries not being ready for 4.3, however CM released their own bare bone recovery to fix that issue. And then I've read that the TW recovery has also been updated to solve this problem.
-There is a lot of information in the development forums, but I have not seen any post on the steps on what to do in order to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3.
-Right now I have CWM 5 recovery, because that's been working for me, and I never bothered changing (bad experience with trying to upgrade/change a recovery). Now from what I understand, I should be able to flash the newest touch recovery (via the goo app?), and then wipe and flash any 4.3 ROM. Any detail instructions would be a help, or if someone can create a tutorial post, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Here is a post I made yesterday about how I switched from 4.2 to 4.3
I hope it helps. I have been on hellybean 4.3 for two days and everything is running great.

You could just install ROM Manager and update from there. It's super-easy (you need ROOT, but I presume you have that since you're flashing ROMs anyway). :good:

Many people have had bad experiences with ROM Manager. Especially in the Gingerbread days when its use was more common for this sort of thing.
Just my 2 cents.

Interesting -- always been good to me, although I only use it to update the recovery; for the ROM itself I use Cyanogen's update util. I also use CWM, not TWRP, so there's that...

Ur best and safest approach would be to DL Odin and the drivers for ur phone, then go to techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and DL twrp2.6.0.4, this is the 4.3 compatible version, then put ur device in DL mode and connect to odin, load the tar file in PDA and click start, 30 sec and u have the latest and greatest twrp recovery, now go get hellybean 4.3 or beanstalk4.3 and flash it, watch the beauty take place...

I updated my rom today like I usually do from the CMUpdater and it updated from 4.2 to 4.3. I didn't mean or want to do that, but it didn't tell me otherwise. Now I'm having issues left and right......the one time I don't back it up...grrr.
I'm having the most issues with Gapps. I downloaded the new one and installed it and Google Music and Youtube keeps crashing. I guess I'll be doing the full wipe now.
Did u update to 4 3 gapps? It won't do it automatically, even if u updated through goo it just looks at what version is installed and updates that version, 4.3 gapps can be found in any 4.3 thread

Why do some of those files say hercules, and others sgh-t989? Aren't they the same phone?
I have had this GNEX for a while. I have not done anything to or with it. It is rooted and works ok. I am thinking it is time to do some updates on the phone. Any recomendations as to what I need to update would help. I haven't done any of this since I had my HTC Shift 4G.
I am sure I need to do my homework and see what all this means again.
OS - 4.2.1
Baseband - L700.05 V.FH05
Kernel - 3.0.31-gd5a18e0-dirty
Build - full_toroplus-userdebug 4.2.1 JOP40D
I am in much the same situation. I've been on a 4.1 ROM (toro) for over a year. I simply got too busy to keep up. I still read the forums off and on.
I need to update and am thinking about going to Carbon. (or open to suggestions) I need it to be reliable, tethering to work, bluetooth to work and to be stable.
I have CWM Recovery udpated to latest.
I just want to make sure I don't have any hiccups updating. I need to use correct GAPPS.
I need to change Titanium over to "legacy" when in new ROM....correct? (so it can find everything else)
Is there some else major that I might need to be concerned about? There were some concerns with losing Root and having to flash SuperSu again . Do I need to have that available in my Downloads to flash along with ROM & GAPPS?
Just some quick tips would be grand.
Thanks!
You guys should check out the 4.3 ROMs, I swear it breathes new life into our GNEX, just bought a tablet stuck on 4.1.2 with no unlocked bootloader (thanks Acer) and this phone always brings back my love for android.
You'll never look back after 4.3, I do know 4.4 is around the corner but 4.3 finally built fstrim right into the OS so its always snappy quick!
Edit - I'm running latest AOKP nightly (mr2 4.3 @ AOKP.co) and AOKP kernel but I usually flash CM nightlies and tiny kernel, just got a little tired of crack flashing everyday.

I appreciate the info. That's my plan to move to 4.3. I'm just wanting to make sure I do it the right way. (as efficiently and painless as possible)

Ahhh well I'm still on the old TWRP so recovery doesn't matter, the old one works for me golden and the su (root) problem only persisted on the beginning 4.3 ROMs. If you grab any custom ROM now I believe the kinks are worked out. Before people needed to flash supersu.zip to regain the binaries.
Titanium also fixed the su bug so if you update from play store it should work without having to change it yourself.
What I did when I went from 4.2.2 to 4.3 is
1. Factory reset with CWM or TWRP (not sure if CWM saves music, pictures and what not, twrp does)
2. Flash whatever ROM you have chosen for 4.3
3. Flash 4.3 gapps
4. Wipe cache and dalvik cache.
5. Reboot. ( give it ten minutes to boot 1st run [fstrim kicking in] )
6.(optional) kernel (not 100% on toro as I'm on maguro)
Hope I kinda helped!
Edit : if all else fails restore stock image (Google "factory images for galaxy nexus (toro)" it should link you to Google.developers.com) download that and use the toolkit by @mskip to return to stock then follow steps 1 - 5 (after pushing custom recovery or letting toolkit do for you.) or if you're not so new to this use the toolkit for everything. If @mskip hasn't updated it yet (last 4.2.2 image) you can still use the restore to stock 4.3 procedure just select latest.

There's also this myth about having the latest bootloader, doesn't matter as far as I can tell.
