Hi everyone. On Tuesday I recived a brand-new One X. I applied all the updates (it was until .11). It seemed that the battery didn't last a lot, and on the stats it showed a high usage coming from Android OS.
Yesterday I applied the Sense 4.1 update from the RUU, as on some forums I've read some suggestions to do a factory reset. – I've all the default settings.
Today, it happened the same. (I attach some screenshots).
The problem isn't the usage of the screen (14% –*18minutes), instead, it shows the biggest drain as "Android OS" which had a keep-awake time of 5h 16m out of a total 6h 11m of usage.
It has drained almost 4% every minute.
I don't think that the problem is caused by any app, as I have the stock ones and WhatsApp, Flipboard, FB, Twitter, Instagram, Pocket, Evernote and Chrome, yet, I haven't really used them...
Could you suggest me anything to try to solve this battery drain problem? I checked the battery stats thread and Android OS usage is 5–6% on average.
Some app is preventing your phone to sleep, there are 2 ways to find out, start uninstalling apps untill you find the app causing the problem or better reset and install one by one
Hi,
I've further researched and I found a question on Stackoverflow – I can't post links yet – which says that by using the following command
Code:
adb shell dumpsys power
you could see what wakelocks are on the phone.
I've tried it, but it seems that there's not any wakelock:
Code:
mPartialCount=0
mWakeLockState=
mLocks.gather=
mBroadcastQueue={-1,-1,-1}
mBroadcastWakeLock=UnsynchronizedWakeLock(mFlags=0x1 mCount=0 mHeld=false)
mStayOnWhilePluggedInScreenDimLock=UnsynchronizedWakeLock(mFlags=0x6 mCount=0 mHeld=false)
mStayOnWhilePluggedInPartialLock=UnsynchronizedWakeLock(mFlags=0x1 mCount=0 mHeld=false)
mPreventScreenOnPartialLock=UnsynchronizedWakeLock(mFlags=0x1 mCount=0 mHeld=false)
mProximityPartialLock=UnsynchronizedWakeLock(mFlags=0x1 mCount=0 mHeld=false)
mProximityWakeLockCount=0
mLocks.size=0:
mPokeLocks.size=0:
Should the app that created the wakelock be running, or it can also be stopped? Would work disabling an app instead of uninstalling it?
I'm not a Pro in this matter but I had that problem with every ROM I was using ARHD, IC u name it!
I found a temporary solution to that problem. Turn ur phone off for a good 10 minutes. Then u will see it go away completely to 2% or 3%.
Doing this on a 80+ charge does the trick!
I'm using the stock ROM. I will start by using BetterBatteryStats to find any deadlock.
Before using BetterBatteryStats I disabled automatic uploading to Dropbox, and I think that's what caused the big battery drain. Now, it's a very good battery life.
disable auto-sync if possible...
Android OS battery drain on unrooted HTC
I have the HTC one X and unfortunately ive been plagued by issues from day one. initially the issue was with the screen. I raised a ticket and the HTC singapore guys took like 10 days to get it replaced for me. after the 'repair', The WiFi reception wasnt great and there were tool marks all over the body..!.. i raised a ticket again, and this time they changed the stuff pretty quick. I got a new body and they claimed to change the internal boards and stuff.. Well i got my fon back the day before and the WiFi was great. But then came the next issue. The battery drain. and it was the Android OS process which was eating up by battery. I have attached some screen shots.
I read through a couple of posts in Xda and installed BBS. BBS showed a kernal wakelock which was keeping my phone awake 100%..!..
Could anybody help me resolve this issue please?. i have flagged the issue again to HTC, but im just plain tired of the cat and mouse game that i play with the service centre guys..
Also, Could this be a hardware issue or is this just a software issue?.
PS : i have tried factory Reset once and it did not help me.

So i rooted my evo and installed a custom rom pretty much as soon as I had it out of the box. And then started installing apps. And i've pretty much NEVER had a fully charged battery last for a whole day even with very little to no usage of the phone.
A few days ago my friend also got an evo but hasn't rooted it or installed any apps yet. And he is easily getting TWO days or more out of a charge.
so i decided to do a full wipe of my phone, and what do you know, I'm suddenly getting 2 days out of the battery, maybe even a little more then 2 days.
Previously, i had setcpu installed as well as system panel. And i was never able to figure out what was draining the battery. When i looked in system panel the only thing that was using the cpu a little bit was system. Pretty much every other app listed was showing 0.1% of cpu usage.
So i'd like to know if there's a better method to figure out what's draining the battery. Do I have to install apps one at a time and wait a few hours/a day to see if the battery starts going down? or is there a better method?
thanks
I always check the awake time versus the time on. If the wake time is very high that means there is an app acting up.
What I'll do to investigate which app is I'll just go to the little stock battery report thing and look at what is using my battery.
Also, it should be noted that be wary of the facebook app. That thing is a complete and total battery hog. It was draining my battery from 20% over the course of an hour.
I was checking the stock battery report - it wasn't showing me anything useful when the battery was going dead.
right now i'm getting amazing battery life compared to before.
90 minutes since the phone was unplugged and it's only down to 96% and that's with me using it a bit. Previously, it would have been down to 85-80% by now.
I just have no clue at all what was causing the drain. I was hoping there was a better method other then installing apps one at a time until the battery starts draining to figure out the culprit.
There's an app called Watchdog and it monitors the background activity happening on your phone. If some seems to be getting out of hand it will notify you.
I had the same problem I installed Smobile security and it was KILLING my battery. Watchdog was able to tell what it was.
Hope this helps.
It looks like watchdog does basically the same thing that system panel does. and system panel wasn't showing me anything unusual. System panel shows the cpu usage of apps - and none of my apps were showing high cpu usage.
I guess there's really no app that can actually show you the battery usage per app - it can only show you the cpu usage.
You can try SpareParts from the Market,it may help you see if you have a wakelock issue of some kind and its free so no harm if it doesn't help.

actually, the rom i am using already has spareparts in it. I'm not sure what you mean by wakelock though. How do i determine that? What is it?
Hi all,
After instaling OTA 1.72.405.3 the android system is eating away my battery like crazy.
After 5 hours my battery was down to 29% (71% was used) and the android system was responsible for 60% of this. In my CurrentWidget log I can see that (with the phone in standby) it uses ~130 mA to ~160 mA.
Does anybody know what is going on or can anybody help me by telling how to find out what is going on?
[edit: If you have the same problem, please post a reply so we can find out if this is a big problem! Thx]
This happened to me yesterday! Found out that the system process had pegged out the CPU @ 100%
I couldn't fix it, and in the end restored to factory settings. Has been OK today but I killed the battery in about 4 hours.
Radio and kernel updated?

yes, i have the same problem! i posted another thread about it (titled constant sync after OTA update) as i first noticed the issue when the sync icon was always being displayed.
today my battery hit 20% after 6 hours with android system taking up 50% of the battery usage. its ridiculous!
if anyone has a workaround or a quick fix please post it up - this is untenable!
I have exactly the same issue, no problem with battery life before the latest OTA, and now the phone is dead within 8 hours with no usage, simply in the pocket with the display off.
Not happy at all, the phone is virtually unusable at the moment as any action accelerates the drain.
Strange! My phone is now with more battery life, after the update. It is SIM free ...

I posted this in another thread -
There seems to be a bug in the update for anyone who had HTCSense.com sync'ing turned on. Either disable all sync'ing for that and / or sign out of that account. It was consuming 100% of my CPU cycles and keeping the processor at the 1ghz mark. Once I disabled the HTCSense.com sync and rebooted the phone, all is good. I went from 100% CPU usage to about 4% and less when idle.
Personally, I'm not sure about HTCSense.com anyways. Way to buggy. I have all my SMS's backed up with SMSBackup+ to my Gmail and my contact / calendar is on Google. I've Wave Secure to lock down the phone if needs be / to find it. I think it's more reliable as well as I used to get a lot of "can't connect to the phone" on HTCSense.com and Wave secure uses at Text Message based system to activate the necessary features along with locking down the phone if the sim is removed / replaced! NICE!
Anywho, anyone who is having battery problems / finding the CPU is topepd at 100% try the above and see!!

I followed up with this:
I must say, I'm quite impressed with the battery life since the update (after I got rid of the 100% CPU bug).
I plugged the phone out at 11am this morning. Quite heavy texts (50+ sent today and at least that received). 10+ calls (incoming and out going) at 3-10mins each. Some Angry Birds, Some Market Updates. Disconnected my Facebook Acc and reconnected to cure a bug in the calendar (facebook entries were there twice), so all that data had to reload. Twitter usage through out the day. WiFi on all day. GPRS Radio only.
Now at 12.15am (so over 13 hours later), I've still got 50% Battery left! I would NEVER have gotten that previously. Not with the heavy use I gave it today.
How are other people finding it!?

Thanks for that. I dont really use any of the sense features myself so i've now disabled sense syncing completely and will see how it goes (once its fully charged again!). will keep this thread updated with any news from my end in any case.
I did notice the sync logo was up quite a bit... interesting!
Mine did it randomly... couldn't clear it so just went for factory reset which appears to have fixed it!
May turn of HTCSense however if it is likely to be causing problems...
I got the same Battery problem after new OTA and Im going crazy! What can I do? My battery lasts only about 4 hours now!!!!!!
Should I factory reset and wipe everything???
As ive posted in a few other threads i went into stock application manager and force closed everything i could to do with google, htc , friendstream, maps, facebook etc. After that my cpu 100% problem stopped, has never returned and battery life has improved compared to before the update.

I have disabled now HTCSense.com sincronization. I will see how this works tomorrow for me. I will let you know guys
I had htcsense.com enabled but to be frank I never really used it much...
disabled its syncing (every 3 hours I had set), rebooted, still had "android system" at ~65% and htc sense running at about 15% (tell me, I use launcher pro 99% of the time, is there any way to actually kill the sense ui? I swear its in the background)...
This did nothing, I tried actually removing the account, and even before a reboot the proc. usage dropped down to about 15%, which was apparently being used by the monitor I use (osmonitor). rebooted, let the phone settle, it did a sync, all seems well... So in my case an actual removal of the account was needed.
Try turning USB debugging on/off. I have it off after the last OTA and I have no /INIT problems. Maybe they fixed it...
I had the same problem, with the cpu running constantly at 100%. For me the solution was to remove the HTC Sense account, and then adding it again. After this the cpu usage dropped to normal.
well its been nearly 4 hours unplugged and i'm down to around 80% with around 30m of calls made and a dozen texts. not fantastic, but much better then before.
Did you try USB debugging? previously that has been mentioned as the CPU eater and battery hogger... just a thought..

Confirmed. I had the same exact problem and removing HTC Sense account did the trick.
I tried adding it again, but the cpu drain started again..... so I'll use it for some time without SenseSync.

Hey everyone
Got a Nexus a couple weeks ago after having iphones for a couple years. Loving it so far.....ICS is very polished.
Initially, my battery life was adequate. However, recently the OS is using 45% battery and the phone gets a very hot when idle (I can feel the heat in my pocket)
I did a factory reset and still the same problems.
Is anyone else coming across these issues?
An old bug cropping up again?

Can you please install Watchdog (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite) and let us know if it's the suspend process (which shows up in the battery meter as part of "Android OS") burning through the battery?
My phone has been on standby for about a day and has 80% battery left. However the battery consumption shows:
42% Android OS
37% Phone Idle
16% Cell Standby
- Also what is the difference between phone idle and cell standby
MY BACKGROUND APPS RUNNING ARE:
- Battery Monitor Widget (I need this on so I can tell what my battery life is easily)
- Google Services (What is this, can I kill it?)
Media (What is this app, can I kill it?)
Music (Again what is this, what happens if I kill it/should I? I never used it.)
I have the same problem. My SGN died after 7 hours without any usage.

Yup, me too. This morning, I took my phone off the charger at 98% for an hour and 15 minutes and didn't touch it. The battery had gone down to 88%, with Android OS using 64% and Android System using 14%. The phone was 'awake' for the entire period. I've had my Nexus since Wednesday and I haven't been getting great battery life. I'm hoping there's a fix for this.
Same problem here... (I testing radio UGKK7, XXKK7 and XXKK1... all with the same problem).
- Lightflow increment "Android OS" battery use.
- By using, Wi-Fi "Android OS" uses less battery.
try disable wifi when not on and unchecked "use wifi network" for location.
another thing could be some active widgets, i remember this was a problem a while back.
Note sure that this has got to do with wifi at all as I reset my phone to factory and I still have the 'Android OS' usage taking 23% of battery. I have no apps nor have I yet linked phone to my Google account.
I have read some comments to do with the Galaxy S2 which too suffered from the same problem. I remember reading something about Samsung driver implementation causing this with the S2. I will update the links when I find something conclusive. Also I have another HTC desire that has the AOSP code compiled rom and that does not suffer from this at all and it is happily sitting idle at almost 2 days with nearly 70% battery still left.

Yes, the problem was with the suspend process eating up CPU. You can install Watchdog and set it to watch non-Android processes, and that will be able to tell you which "Android OS" process is actually the one eating up battery.

Do you have your email or anything set up to receive things instantly? That can have a noticeable impact on your battery if so
Thanks Chirality, but I assume that this is happening to all users? Samsung have seen this before so shouldn't this be fixed from the very start? Wrong person to ask this question to, but it is annoying..
Anyways I will install Watchdog like you say, but unless I can kill the 'suspend' process, I am helpless.

No, that's why I reset the phone to factory settings and the current behaviour is without any apps, or registration with google, no emails, nothing installed.

Is there anything in the logcats that could hint to a problem? Like errors or something unusual that it keeps repeating
I have the same problem with high system CPU usage. I used SystemPanel to monitor the phone (unplugged, standby mode) during my 8-hour sleep and here's the results.
The System Processes were using 49min of CPU time while the phone was idle
When I clicked on the system processes I got a list of individual processes. Anyone knows what are there kworker processes for?
When I clicked on one of the System Processes (kworker/u:1), I got its CPU usage. It was doing something almost the whole time
Finally, I should also mention that the phone lost about 7% in these 8-hour test. Seems ok but I think it would be even better when this high system CPU usage is fixed.

Hmm...Now that you asked this, I remember watching logcat output and was getting a null Notification event almost one every minute a couple of days back. I therefore proceeded to uninstall all my widgets/apps but I could not reach to a conclusive outcome.
Anyways as Chirality pointed out this post (Link) indicates a 'suspend' process issue. And this guy identified the process causing it (Link), I think!

A driver issue definitely sounds plausible but there are also a lot of things different between these two phones, especially between GB and ICS.
Watching /proc/kmsg should show something if it is an issue with the kernel

I have installed Watchdog and set the settings to what you indicated. I am a bit confused around the app, so I have added screenshots to update you of the data at my end.
Do let me whether you see the issue immediately or need any further information.
My experience is somewhat the same.
Out of the box battery life seemed pretty good. After the update to fix the volume issue I started to notice that the battery would fall even when the phone was idle. Android OS was the culprit. I am now running MCR and I have the same issue.
It's not terrible battery life, but it's substantially worse than it was out of the box.
I did wonder if the problem was related to how they fixed the volume bug. Is something always running to pick up the volume bug problem and deal with it when it happens?
Just a thought.

Interesting. I've been thinking the same thing, and the annoying thing about that is the problem doesn't affect my network (T-Mobile), so I could be getting reduced battery performance for no reason! Ah well.
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3 (rooted, but no custom ROM) through AT&T where it's losing battery power at a much higher rate than normal every once in a while.
Specifically, today, I was using the GPS feature and charging it in my car, and yet, even though it said it was charging, the battery continued to lose charge. Also, in the past, the phone has lost charge very quickly, and when I check the battery usage, "Android System" is very high on the list, up to 60% (with "Screen" being at 11%, which is usually the biggest culprit for me since I leave the screen on a lot). One time, I went to bed at around midnight and had forgotten to plug in my phone. When I woke up it was off. I turned it back on and looked at the battery stats using 3c's Battery Monitor Widget and saw that it lost charge quite slowly until about 5am, when suddenly the usage went up dramatically, and the phone went from about 60% to 0% in the course of an hour and a half of non-use.
Because this is not a problem I can reproduce on command, I'm not sure exactly what application/process is causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone else experienced things like this happening before? (Besides me having to pay for the "betterbatterystats" app?)
Edit: Also, "Android System" sometimes is sometimes listed as "gsiff_daemon" in the battery stats, and within 3c's Battery Monitor Widget, Android System is separate from "gsiff_daemon", where gsiff_daemon's usage is almost 15 times the usage of Android System.
Checkout this thread to see if the gsiff_daemon is your problem. tl;dr when the system is hot and tearing through the battery, go to system settings -> Developer options -> and check Show CPU usage. If gsiff_daemon is the top or second highest on the list, then that is your problem. To solve it for the moment, use system tuner, or something else, to kill gsiff_daemon. There is no permanent cure at the moment, other than to delete gsiff_daemon. Both of those fixes require root, the non-root fix is to reboot.
If gsiff_daemon is not on the list, then something else is the problem, but Show CPU Usage should give you an idea of what system process is running hard.
Samsung Push problem
J M L,
Thanks for the information. I'll do that if the problem arises again. However I also did something else that looks like it may have been the solution for my particular problem, which was disabling the "Samsung Push" service in the Application Manager. So far, my battery life has gone back down to very reasonable levels.

Interesting, I installed "micro cpu monitor" shows thin line at top of screen showing both cores.
I haven't had this happen for some time now but after playing with google play and maps downloading offline maps etc I noticed my 2nd core pegged out.
Having seen this in the past & ignoring it I now realize that majorly drains the battery as well as it getting warm.
A simple reboot seems to be the only thing that fixes it. Clearing ram and closing recent screens dies nothing to clear the "cpu jam".
If left alone, it always shows the culprit as "android system"
As to what part of "android system" I don't know.
But until we figure this out for good, that little micro cpu monitor. App is sweet for peace of mind to know all is well or whether a reboot is needed. For what it's worth, I also noticed that after the event, that my auto rotate to landscape was mysteriously unchecked?
If it jams again, I'll have to see if it gets unchecked again, unknown if there is a relation.

I read the thread about gsiff_daemon culprit. I had it listed as a possible battery drain culprit. The thread says the issue may happen after a hot reboot...which I did have. Killing gsiff_daemon was not immediately effective. I renamed the file so it wouldn't get used...like the thread recommended. I had to reboot to get normal battery drain back and have yet to see the issue again. But i wont know for some time...or maybe when/if i get a hot reboot...which is really rare. Do yourself a favor, and buy better battery stats. Its a must have tool...and it's not expensive.
I wonder if this problem has been solved with latest lj7 jellybean from sprint

so with some trial and error i found some resolutions ..
first, i used Watchdog and it told me that the media services is killing battery too.
so doing a full wipe does not always fix this.. but what does, is reboot and wait about 1 hour charging and it will calm down. this was just something i noticed. so what i did is wipe out my SD cards, both of them, cleared them out 100% formatted the External SD, and used recovery to format the internal. From there it seem to work, i put my stuff back, and it seems ok.
problem is, when you install a lot of rom's and have bad reboots some files get messed up and you have to do it all over again..
problem was with AOPK, CM and TW roms.

My experience with froyo/gb/ics is that things have been getting progressively better over the years. But with each so called UPGRADE of an OS or even APPS, we often have to deal with bugs or incompatibilities. I am eager to upgrade to a stock based JB soon, but wisdom says, for 20 things improved, there will be 5 things broken....or hurting in some way. Early adopters suffer the most as usually these issues get ironed out...most of them.
BUT...these stuck drains...wake locks etc., it seems they will happen when they do no matter how many issues get fixed. Over the years, I've had random standby drains caused by Maps/Nav. Maybe it's ok for months, then after a particular update, it's back...and unpredictable. The YES...a reboot, just like with a PC, is a quick short term workaround.
Finally, with the App CURRENT WIDGET, there is a provision to watch for high drain in standby. It watches MilliAmp (ma) readings over time..to determine if you have a rogue drain. That's different than monitoring the CPU. (Some drains do not cause much CPU activity) BUT UNFORTUNATELY, that app won't work with our S3's because of a lack of hardware support. Works great with HTC and many others. It's a bummer because I used to use it and have my HD2 reboot if a 15min consecutive high drain was recorded in standby....thereby saving the battery and usually killing the bug.
Crapppp
Jellybean didn’t solve it. Gsiff_daemon just popped up for me. Just renamed it AGAIN.
Hopefully it won't pop up again

hi, has anyone experienced the battery drain when the phone is idle?
last night i've left the phone on 20-22% battery and when i woke up - the phone was turned off because the battery reached 0%...
when it charged - the idle battery consumption was off the wall...
device is about a month and a half old...
i'm using stock MIUI (latest, EU), not rooted
phone is slightly debloated via adb fastboot tool...
phone doesn't use 5G network at home or ever, mobile data is turned off when i'm home
i just can't figure out what is happening...
thanks in advance
Debloated too much I think. Have the same issue when I have Samsung Phone and used adb debloater
not sure about that...
i didn't touch any crucial Xiaomi apps, just recommended ones and never had any bebloat battery drain issues on any device which was debloated or even rooted
update:
last night i left the device with 38% battery, just to see what would happen
in the morning, 8 hours after - it still had 35% charge strange...
note: in the meantime, i adjusted some apps not to work in the background if not needed and uninstalled (almost) never used Google Lens (which i've installed few days ago to try something)
didn't touch any battery settings for common social and messaging apps that i use (Facebook, fb messenger, google messages)
so, maybe the culprit was either google lens or some of those adjusted apps - or the device doesn't read the battery well when under 30%... i'll see what will happen in the next few days...
@60nine Settings > Battery > Battery Use (check "Daily battery usage chart")
Look there if you see any app that has consumed much battery.
you seriously think that i don't already know how to check this? (how do you think i've found that the idle was draining the battery?
no suspicious apps there, idle battery consumption was at the top...
Sorry, I overlooked that you have already wrote it is the idle drain and not a specific app
no problem
