Hello, as the title states. Is there a way to have Amazon recognize my Kindle Fire as a Kindle instead of an Android Tablet? I need to download some textbooks online and they only can be read on the Kindle Fire native app or the Ipad Kindle app (stupid that it can't be read on the Android Kindle App). But I love my ICS, and really really don't want to have to go back to stock. So I was wondering if there was a way to trick Amazon that my ICS Kindle Fire is actually a Kindle.
There probably is a way to fix this by editing the build.prop? But I have no idea how.
Thank you so much!
I have a back up off the stock ROM and jellybean, so whenever I need to get my free book from the lending owners library, I just restore to stock, then get/read the bbook, and then go back to twrp and restore to jellybean!

As an alternative you could also dual boot the KF with both stock (modaco) and ICS/JB using the modified FFF bootloader which would allow you to quickly switch between stock and another ROM so you can have your cake and eat it too!

Last poster, you can find dual-boot instructions in the KF Development threads.

I found a great option with BuritoRoot3, but seems im screwed because I have 3.6.x stock. I want FULL root. I don't care about Kindle desktop or stock crap. I have a ROM I want to run (HellFire) but I dont fully understand now without BuritoRoot3 how to go about
1) Rooting
2) Making a backup / recovery
3) FIREFIREFIRE
4) TWRP or CWM ?
or some easier why to go about this. Like a drop back to 6.2 stock some how ?? is that possible ....
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It will get you caught up on basic terminology, installing drivers, relevant fastboot/adb commands. Focus on post #3... near the end, it has a step-by-step on how you should go about flashing a custom ROM on a stock device. You do not need to root the stock software if you are going straight to a custom ROM. The document is slightly dated as it refers to an older version of FFF, but it will get you started nonetheless. You can update to the newest version of FFF when you are all done without much trouble.
Right now, the preferred recovery is TWRP because CWMR has problems flashing ICS based ROMs, so you should probably go with that one. Backups/restores should be pretty self-explanatory once you get TWRP installed.
The most recent Fire I bought, I didn't waste any time going through the rooting crap. I just put it into fastboot, installed FFF and TWRP, and used adb to push ICS to sdcard for flashing in recovery.
I never even let the stock OS boot
Use TWRP for now, CWM has issues with the latest kernel.
And definitely read the guide kinfauns gave you a link to. As long as you have a couple of brain cells to play with, it'll give you a good foundation to work from.

On a stock device, you have 2 choices...
1) Use a factory cable to get directly into fastboot mode
2) Use pokey9000's fbmode exploit to set the bootmode to fastboot (4002) and reboot
In the URL I gave you, there are links and directions on how to use fbmode near the end of post #3.
Fastboot....

I had the same question when I first started with the KF. Basically you need to change the "Bootmode" of the KF to boot into Fastboot mode. This is most easily done using the Kindle Fire Utility then restart your KF.
It is really not necessary to do this to root/install a custom ROM and it has lead a lot of inexperienced users to get "stuck at the yellow triangle," but if you want to play around with it, it is easy to do.
Hope this helps. Thanks for listening
Sincerely,
William

It's this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414832
They didn't fix it in 6.3
Alternatively, it's "easier" to hop into fastboot mode with FFF, so that shouldn't worry you much once it's installed.

I think It'd be pretty tough to "fix" fbmode without locking the bootloader. It's only a matter of time though.
So I really like the Android 4.0 ICS Rom that I put on my Kindle Fire.
But I also really wanted to keep some of the Kindle Fire's app such as Amazon Instant Video, and Kindle.
I know I can get the Kindle app from the Android Market, but there is no Amazon Instant Video app in there.
Is there a way that I can still get the Amazon Instant Video app while running ICS 4.0 Android ROM besides just running a ICS launcher on a Kindle Fire ROM?
If not, is there a way I can alternate between the Android ROM and the Default Kindle Fire ROM?
EDIT:
Queston 2:
So I can't get TWRP to work properly. Like... It doesn't feel like it's installed. The only way I can get TWRP to show up on the boot screen, is when I manually have to each time, use the KFU, Press 3+Enter, and then reboot my kindle fire that way, and THEN it'll just load TWRP. I never see the yellow Triangle for some reason. Any reasons why?
Currently running on 6.3.1 using KFU version 0.9.6
Not that I know of

You want prime stay stock you want ics no prime that is how it is but you can alternate from a backup of each via recovery.
Keep a backup of both stock and ics on your SD card when you want to watch prime use ota root keeper to protect root and temp. unroot on your stock side always remember to restore root and delete superuser backup when your done . Always make fresh backups before returning to the other. Always do good wipes when moving back and forth because of the difference between the two systems as this can cause problems during restore. Ultimately its as big hassle and an be dangerous if you mess up or take an ota and loose root while on stock. Problems that I have had when switching lost game data particularly glu games, kindle books, market problems, bad backups, SD card space consumption . About your twrp and bootloader issue I would use smirkits scripts to update both of them starting with twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935 read carefully on how to apply these with root browser if you want help just ask for it in a new thread someone will be more than willing to walk you through it .
Your bootloader and recovery are the two things you don't want to make any mistakes on.
I'm pretty sure I haven't made any mistakes though. I've followed tutorial word for word, and even by videos...
What do you see when you boot your device do you see a white kindle with an orange fire? Or a white kindle with a blue fire? If you see the second one depress your power button a few times quickly till you get a tiny list of options at the bottom of the screen press your power button till it looks like --recovery-- that will put you into recovery. If you see the white kindle with the orange fire your bootloader is not installed.

Yes, it is possible to dual boot the Kindle Fire, but I wouldn't suggest trying it without doing some research first. And considering the second question of your post, I would suggest doing a LOT of research.

I don't have Prime but I've purchased tv shows and rented movies on Amazon and I can see them on my Kindle running ICS through the Amazon website (changing user agent to Desktop on the browser settings) It works pretty well (accessing controls when in full screen mode is a little bit hard and messy but if you don't try to go back and forth in the movie you'll be okay)
I know is not the same as the stock video player but it works
So I might be getting a K Fire today and I'm wondering if this still holds true?
I already have a Galaxy Nexus so just being able to use ICS/browsing the internet isn't a big deal for me. I plan on using the device primarily for reading and video (whichever service is best - amazon, netflix, ect.).
Is the kindle app just as good as the stock interface? Would I loose much from the transition from stock to 4.0.4? I'm guessing that ICS offers a smoother interface and browsing but is that worth the switch?

The Kindle app for Android is nowhere as good as the reader already on the stock rom. Seeing as all you're going to do is read and watch videos, stay on the stock rom or try MoDaCo.
Hey everyone. I am ready to root my kindle fire and (if its a good idea) put a custom rom on it. I wanted to know what risks i take with using KFU and if its a good idea to use a custom rom instead of the stock rom rooted. I like some of the jelly bean ROMs, but I am ok with anything. I love customizing my devices, this is my first Android device. I don't really like the stock rom at all. I just wanted to make sure KFU is safe and I don't run a risk of bricking my Kindle.
Thanks, x10knight

Well, When I rooted my kindle it was very simple to root and I had absolutely no issues. I am not sure if amazon has been up to no good and did something to make fastboot more difficult to enter/use because a lot of people lately have been getting stuck in fastboot and needing help getting their kindle's "unbricked". If you would prefer using an AOSP ROM I would recommend trying one of the ICS roms first just because they are a little more stable and battery life is much more reliable. That or you could try Modaco to ease yourself into the rooting/ROMing game, it is rooted stock + google play. The rewards of rooting your device outweigh the risk but you just need to be patient. If your KFU seems like it is stuck, give it a few more minutes before you unplug your device or turn it off. Both of these leave you vulnerable to soft bricking your device and while it can be an easy fix, it is a headache that could be avoided. I am not completely up to date with it all but I would be happy to help if you need any advice or run into any difficulties. Best of luck!

There always is a risk of bricking a device when Rooting /Flashing. At lease with my experience with the fire the risk is no higher than any other Android based device. Flashing a Rom mostly revolves around if you are a Amazon Prime member and use there services like Video Steaming and Lending Books from Amazon I would recommend using a launcher like ADW Launcher but if none of that apply to you I will recommend This
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766829
Edit I have not use the above ROM mostly because I use the Above services but if I did not use them this will be the one I would have chosen
Ok, I tried rooting twice. Everytime it says something about cannot download recovery, and i have to force the kindle out of fastboot.

couldn't you just download twrp and place the .bin into the twrp folder in KFU so that they don't have to mess around with the fastboot commands themselves?
I did but since goo.im was down it decided to delete twrp instead of using it and it was twrp 2.2 the correct file hopefully soon it will be resolved... someone stated that the server is back up but I can't test it till much later tonight...

I can host twrp on my mediafire account until things get back up and running.
just place the TWRP.img file in the folder /recovery in the KFU directory then just run the utility and it should just go to the part where it flashes the file to your kindle. Is it downloading FFF fine?
http://www.mediafire.com/?f3sr33214229pr2
Ok so we download that file and then we make a folder called " recovery" inside the Kfu folder? . and just run the utility again and do the perm root?

Remember that if you somehow break the system while rooting(rather hard) the FFF bootloader can save you ass because it can switch Kindle in fastboot mode.
hello.
I write this post because right now I'm desperate. my kinde fire was rooted and works great. I wanted to install an unofficial ROM and there came all problems.
first of all I want to say that I resort to this message because I've tried everything, but I did manage to save my device.
My Kindle was rooted and TWRP works well. I inadvertently left the device without an operating system. I forgot to put a rom after you wipe. After this, when the device booted, first came out the white and orange logo, then white and blue recovery and eventually returned to the first logo.
First I tried to recover it with the original firmware. I could not access the device via the file browser windows, so I copied the. zip with adb push. after several attempts I went to plan B, because I always got the same "error 7", so I tried to install the cyanogen rom, but I had the same fate.
After that, I was reading about fastboot, so I downloaded kindle fire utility. I think something went here even worse, because now TWRP gone.
I finally discovered unbrick kindle utility, but now my pc does not recognize the device. drivers are installed and kindle fire utility says "adb: online", but I can not access the device.
I searched a lot of information, but I think I am increasingly far from the solution, so I decided to write this post.
anyone can help me to recover the kindle? I'm desperate now. I'd like to have everything as before, I do not lose the root
thanks!!!

Hi. I was just commenting that a lot of people are rushing into doing things without reading, or even checking what model they have. Admittedly Amazon hasn't made it easy by advertising it as the Kindle Fire 2. All the recent posts in this section of the forum are from people bricking their devices, mainly because they did something wrong.
I don't know how the situation can be changed, apart from building some checks into the KF1 rooting/modding tools.

Hey guys, I tried to install TWRP by following this threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105 and I successfully boot into TWRP.
But then terrible things happened. Maybe I got wrong by clicked one more bottom on fireflash herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168512.
Then TWRP tells me no OS found, I can only boot into recovery now. Since Kindle Fire HD got no external SD card, what can I do about it?
Only factory cable, which I nerver want it, can save my Kindle?
