Hi all,
I've been looking for an alternative to GTALK since 2.3.4 completely destroyed it making me a sad panda. Some family recently got a tablet and I'd love to chat face to face via GTALK.
VTOK won't connect between my Xperia and their tablet (just sits on "connecting" or ringing).
Are there any other chat clients that allow GTALK video? Pay or Free don't care.
Otherwise which non-google video chat has the best quailty. Tried TANGO but the quality in Audio and Video was lacking.
Otherwise I'm experienced with modding non-android (Symbian, Windows) phones. How easy is it to flash back to 2.3.3 USA Version VERZION
Thanks everyone!

I don't know about a GTalk alternative, but to flash back to 2.3.3, use this tool to flash this .ftf file.

I was hoping that Nimbuzz would work better with Skype on the Desire than it did on my Magic but sadly it doesn't. Has anyone got a working VOIP Skype solution using 3G?
Cheers
Aidan
I might be wrong but doesn't FRING work well as a Skype client?
Why doesn't SKYPE themselves have software, or did they used to have but took it away like they did for win mobile?
I used fring on G1 and it worked fine. Didn't have a chance to install it on Desire yet.
Fringe works fine as a messenger on Desire, haven't tried it as a voip client yet.
There is Skype Lite for Android.
You can't use it to make VoIP calls.
Can't you? I'm just about to upgrade my old nokia to a desire but being able to make skype-to-skype calls over 3g is a very important feature for me. I use it often on my nokia. Skype mobile's android website suggests that its possible (at least on Verizon). Perhaps it's more to do with the network than the software? I'm hoping on vodafone in the UK it won't be a problem. What do you think?
Before skype symbian i used both fring and Nimbuzz with limited success. Fine for messaging, but laggy for voip.
I read somewhere that Skype is working on a full version for Android, but I guess you need it now and not later

I made a test call on fring over WiFi. Sounded fine. Might try VoIP tomorrow - a little too late now
Yes Fring is the option atm. it has most of the im's integrated and you can have skype voip, their own or 3rd party. I used it on my WM phone and SE m600 works fine, and my friend using it on the Hero. Can't wait for my Android phone.
And the best thing that Fring implemented video calls over the skype, but not sure android is getting it, except for Evo which has front camera.
Check out the G1 forums, there's a skype app somewhere on there which has been pulled from the 3 Hero. 3 offer free skype to skype calls on their phones and have their own skype (skype branded but i think made by them) app.
It would also probably be in the Hero forums.

I think you might find it only works through the 3 mobile 'relay' servers. Worth a shot though.
I would like to buy this wonderful phone but first i need to ensure that skype works..Has anyone tried it yet?
I have searched all over the internet and i have found that due to cpu freq skype does not work smoothly, especially when the screen goes blank(proximity sensor) and the OS drops the cpu freq. But that answer was 6 months old So i hope for a bit advancement in skype development..
I would be grateful if anyone that has tested skype in that phone could give me a more accurate answer!
I can confirm it works without any doubt , plus you have possibility to add voip accounts without installing any extra app
Thanx man! Btw not so important but does the front cam work with skype ?

It doesn't have a front camera
but, Skype is working Perfectly (Y)
@koki-tytnII
which version do you have runing on it? coz on mine it just make problems when I speak, and exactly when skype is running on background, that means when the display is turning off
thanks
you can find skype app at market.
So my own experience with Skype and that "****ty", but cheap, cellphone (Wildfire S, by the way, I used the official HTC ROM)... So that's just impossible to handle the calls with Skype. I tried Skype, Skype lite, Skype on 3 (a special version of Skype which allows just the chats, so NO CALLS)...
So I installed Viber. The calls are pretty good even if the sound is quite low... But compare to Skype (desktop software version) that's not the same quality/rapidity!
To sum up : Skype doesn't work well for the calls! Okay you can use it to chat with your friends but some better applications exist (like WhatsApp).
A buddy of mine used tasker to setup a profile to keep the screen ON when i'm on a skypecall, so skype has benefit of the max cpu produced.. I've got crystal clear skypecalls over 3G here
I use Skype_on_3 without any problems: audio cristal clear.
With normal skype instead, I have the famous choppy sound that make it useless (3G or wi-fi is the same).
I tried to use headphones to leave the screen on, but the problem is still there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
(Wildfire S, Stock ROM, S-OFF, last skype updated yesterday from the market.)
Skype works perfectly normal, and its very good to use with head set, and there is no lag. tho` there is no front camera for video calls ... and i think the 600mhz wouldnt handle video calls
skype doesn't work for me either (Wildfire S, Vodafone Ireland, Standard ROM, S-ON).
I think it works when the phone is flat and I use a headset, but that's pretty limited!
I tried downgrading to an older version (Skype 1.0.0.984 and Skype 1.0.0.983), no success either. Any suggestion?
I had the same problem, i uninstalled the new version and installed the old v1 and works just fine, no problems whatsoever

Where can you find an old version? The market only has the latest. I wanted to use skype over wifi and the sound is to bad it's useless. I thought it was a bandwidth issue but I tested and got about 10 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up so I know it's not that - glad to see that others are having this issue also not just me. But I'd be even happier if I could get a fix
I found skype 1.03 and it works without the new versions chopped-up sound - works just FINE!!! Found it here
Hi,
I agree about using an old version. I do it as well and speaking works very very good, and sometime better then my old notebook.
Just one thing that I really dont like, with such old version skype doesnt support sending sms, which means, when I need to speak I use the old one, for sending sms the new one.
Perhaps there is a stable version from skype which allows sending sms? Or is there a way to install two version of skype?
thanks
I'm almost shocked that my brand new nexus doesn't have the option to do video calling. My Sgs2 makes and receives video calls fine but on the nexus i can't even receive one from another device. Is there something I'm not aware of? Or is the nexus unable to make video calls for some reason?

Standard 3G video calls? Don't think its supported.
Its not supported. Crazy i know.
Damn why didn't i know about this earlier? But I'm sure Google plans to add support for 3G video calling soon right? It's really stupid for a flagship device to not have such a simple feature while the others had it from day one.

i`m agree with all of you guys...
i have desire s, it`s have front camera, but it can`t use to make video call. when i want to make video call, i should use third party application. it`s really not usable, and commonly gadget now can use video call without use 3rd application.
i hope google soonly develop video call for android user...
Hi there,
A friend of mine is low on funds and I'm suggesting he find a used android smartphone that he can make and receive calls in the US via WiFi (with no wireless carrier service).
What's a good choice that will definitely have an unlocked or unlockable bootloader? I would like to set him up with something that runs CM12 nicely - he'll be using Google Hangouts for phone calls and VOIP video conferences, maybe Skype for video calls now & then too. I don't care which carrier since it won't be activated.
My own experience with Verizon has me gun-shy about anything that's gotten a firmware update that firmly locks down the bootloader.
Thanks,

Why does the HD video call not work across carriers??? I don't understand this at all.. there's no need for Google Duo if they can just make the devices talk amongst carriers.. anybody know the specifics behind this?
I.e. I can't use the built in video call to call my gf ATT N7 from my Verizon N7

Well google duo is a google thing and the built in video chat in the dialer is a samsung thing. Even if they were to work across carriers, both phones would have to be newer samsungs. Google duo is for people with any phone manufacturer who want to video chat between each other.
