So, due to some screw ups on AT&T's part, I managed to upgrade to an S3 from a Skyrocket for free... and I love it. However, I seem to have an issue and I am not sure if I need to return the phone or not.
Whenever I play music I have copied from my PC to the SDCard, I hear clicks and pops constantly. Too narrow down what the issue might be I have done the following:
- Played the music through the speaker, clicks and pops present.
- Played the music over bluetooth pairing to my car stereo, clicks and pops present.
- Played the music over an audio cable plugged into AUX input on my car stereo, clicks and pops present.
- Played the music through the included eaarbuds, clicks and pops present, BUT only in the left earbud.
- Played the music with google play app, and the included music player, clicks and pops present.
The music doesn't have this issue on my PC, and the music is stored on the same external SDCard that was in my Skyrocket. The Skyrocket had no issues at all. Obviously the problem isn't with the headphone jack, since it happens over bluetooth as well. Also, It seems odd to me that it would be only the left earbud.
Has anyone had a similar issue? Anyone have any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks for any help in advance!
Sounds like a hardware malfunction. I'd take it to a local COR store and exchange it, shouldn't be an issue

+1, but you might want to try a factory reset just for kicks and may be reflash stock firmware? maybe OTA updates?
Also [FIX] Pops and crackles in headphone output.
There is an ota out for a sound fix but I didn't have that issue with mine before hand. To be safe, switch it out.

I would go exchange it personally. If you just got it, it won't be a problem. Which color did you choose?

I went with the white. I like it a little better than the blue (no idea why) and the red wasn't available yet.
Exchanging will be a little more of a hassle than just going to a store since I got it shipped to me and dealt exclusively with them over the phone. I think (I could be wrong) that means I will have to do the exchange process over the phone as well.
Thanks everyone for the responses so far, really appreciate the input.
Ok, another test.
I downloaded intune and tried out a few music stations, no clicks and pops at all...
Maybe I should reformat my SDCard and try starting from scratch.

It would be a bit of a hassle, but luckily they send the phone first then when you have your new one you can send the old one back, makes it bearable!

If it was purchased from AT&T directly you can exchange at a corporate store with no problems at all. Saves the hassle of shipping and no restocking fee since it's defective.

Yep. Stopped at the store today, no worries if I need to trade it in. However, I want to try a new SDCard first. I formated the old one last night and copied music back onto it. It had the same problem, BUT different songs had the clicks and pops. That sounds an awful lot like an SDCard going bad to me. I picked up a new one and I am copying music onto it now. We shall see what happens.
Any luck with new SDcard?
I've had same issue with mine from Telus since the day I got it. Playing music from Play Music and samsung player both clicked and popped, but youtube was fine.
I tried a "soft boot" (power off, battery out) as Samsung suggested then a factory reset and the problem is still there.
It seems like a software issue, but if others haven't had the problem with same software, could a batch have slightly different hardware that is conflicting?
I also have this problem. Unfortunately, I got my phone off Craigslist. However, in my case, Poweramp does not show any of these problems through the headphones or the speaker. I'm not sure why this is but they have a trial if you want to try it out.

I tried that as well and it was still there. The only place I didn't hear it was Youtube.
After doing a soft reset followed by a hard reset as suggested from Samsung. I got fed up and returned it to Futureshop for another one that I tested first to see that it didn't have this issue.
Must be a bad batch of them.
Similar issues here. Charging and using Aux causing a whining, popping, and cracking noise. When you unplug the charger the noise goes away.
Hope they sort this out soon. Really don't wanna have to exchange if I don't have to.
Never had this issue on either of my past iPhones.
Did you reformat the SD card when you moved it from the Skyrocket to the GS3. This can sometimes cause issues.

I've had my phone for about a week or so and since that time I've had it randomly shutdown during phonecalls while plugged into my charger in the truck. I think it did this while playing music through Google Play as well as talking to my wife, but it keeps happening. The phone is NOT rooted and I suppose it could be an app I have installed, but it's frustrating trying to figure out which one if that's the case.
I haven't confirmed it, but it *appears* to be only happening while either A) connected to BT or B) plugged into my charger in the truck (which I used previously for my Atrix) or C) maybe it's while both are connected? I haven't noticed it happening other than when it's plugged in and using BT. Also, forgot to mention it shows me a picture of the battery when it drops (whether it's full or half full or whatnot) and I can hold in the power button and it comes back up.
I scoured Google and saw several posts about this issue, but none of them provided too much information. Anyone else have this happen yet? Should I contact ATT and get it exchanged? Any help is appreciated.
If you've only had it for a week, I'd take it back to an AT&T store for an exchange. My first GS3 was stock and had issues out of the box with random shutdowns and reboots. Took it back and asked for a new sim card also just to be sure. The replacement has been rock solid, so the first one was just a dud. The AT&T store I took the first one back to was very helpful and made the swap with no hassle.

So some of them are just random duds? Well that's good to know I guess. Hopefully they'll be willing to exchange it at their store. Is there any other possibility anyone can think of or should I just swap it?
Thanks for your help btw.

My first one was shipped from AT&T wireless. Took it to an official AT&T wireless store (not just one of the authorized dealers) and it was swapped quickly with few questions asked. Lots of these were made in a short period of time to meet demand, so some made it through half baked. New one has zero issues.

Mine was also shipped via ATT Wireless.. Okay.. I'll print out this thread and just show it to them.. lol..
Thanks again for the help.
My first one did that and i found that it always did it to me and i tried to replicate it and found that if left in heat it random reboots everytime.
Ive always left ever phone ive owned in my truck while playing bball and this is the only one that does this.

Mine reboot on its own several times a week. Usually while in my belt case. Planning on getting ATT to swap it at some point, but am lazy and not super motivated yet. They were good about similar issues with my old Captivate at the real ATT store.

Love this awesome phone but as of late the proximity sensor on this note has either broke or is buggy. First started to notice that the red light of the proximity sensor would not turn off. After a while as I make phone calls my screen will turn off but as I put my phone away from my face it doesn't turn back on. This may not seem like a big problem but if I can't have full control of my phone it is rather bothersome. For example I cannot properly end calls or switch to speaker phone or utilize my phone during the call. It is rather annoying talking while keeping the screen on because I end up click all sorts of things while my face is on the phone. Need help in fixing it. Tried rebooting, turning proximity sensor on and off, battery pulls but nothing. It sometimes returns back to normal after a while but due to my line of work I cannot afford to estimate when it's going to work. Any help would be great. I apologize in advance if this issue has already been addressed. Thanks!

I do have a case but I tried taking it off and it still has same symptoms. I also tried turning the settings on and off. Maybe it's the screen protector but my sgp sits right below the sensor so I doubt it's that either.

It happened while completely stock and also rooted as well. I also tried rebooting and battery pulls but same results. I think I'm going to bring it to the sprint store. The funny thing is I brought it in before and magically the tech got it to work again. I was thinking maybe it was the way I was holding it. But I tried holding it with either hand and it still occurs. Hopefully this time I can reproduce it again. I'm fed up trying to figure this out.

It does not appear to be software related.

Just an update:
I brought it back to my local Sprint store to have the device checked out a 2nd time last week. I was able to reproduce the problem to the CSR and they immediately took it in to get it repaired. Told me to come back in a hour to come pick it up. Hour came up and as I inquired about my phone, the Sprint technician told me there was nothing she could do since it was rooted and simply handed me back my phone without a single explanation. I asked them how rooting a phone physically caused my proximity sensor to not work, and they simply shrugged. I then asked the CSR to please tell me what I can do alleviate this problem and he simply said, "I never rooted my phone before, so I don't know what to tell you". I was shocked because I work in sales and never before have I ever said that to a customer. I decided not to argue even though I know I could have and asked for the manager. I then decided to unroot my phone and go back to stock to see if that would magically fix my problem and of course it didn't.
Today, I went to the Sprint store near my work place, and HOLY COW, it was different. No wait, no line, and when I went to talk to the CSR and technician they were friendly and took the time to try to fix the problem. The tech went to through all the basics, doing a battery pull, hard reset, and even suggested to take off my SGP screen protector (I KNOW! I really didn't want to!). Unfortunately it didn't work, and the CSR told me to come back in a few days so they would order me a new one. Excited to hear that, I then asked them to specify which day and probably not wanting to deal with me anymore, decided to give me a brand new one on the spot. They set everything up and even gave me the box and everything, so now I have an extra charger, cable, and earbuds. It just goes to show how different Sprint procedures are. Both stores were Sprint owned stores, and both had the same technical support yet I was treated so differently.
To anyone having the same problems, please do yourself a favor and just unroot it just in case. I find that some stores will do or say anything to not replace your phone. I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 6 years and I feel that they will still treat you like crap.
i would report the first store for sure

Brought my phone in to a sprint repair center store. They fixed it by replacing the sensor. Before I left I inspected it thoroughly, they broke the volume rocker and now they're ordering me a new one since they didn't have the grey in stock and back ordered.

The reason the red light stays on is because you have smotion on. With smotion the proximity sensor stays on the whole time. If you turn it off the red light will go off. Don't know if that will also fix your other problem. With the smotion on I don't have any issues.

Well after a few hours of work/waiting I am sad to say that I did not benefit from the good customer service you got.
I went in today around 10 and dropped off my phone to be looked at by the Tech, who was not in until 11.
Around 12:15 I got a call (on my wifes phone) and they let me know that the phone would have to be entirely replaced. The tech told me he could not swap one out for me. I asked to speak to a manager.
Manager, "hello this is Matt"
Me: "Hi Matt, (explained issue again) and I was hoping you guys could replace my phone for me. "
Manager: "We don't have any phones available for that, we will have to order one from the depot"
Me: ' Oh, you don't have any note II's at the store?"
Manager: "We do, But they are for new customers and activation's only.
Oh... WAIT WHAT?
Ok ok. I understand that if he isn't allowed to and MUST order them from the depot....BUT HOW ARE YOU STUPID ENOUGH TO SAY THAT?
I have worked in various customer service capacities for most of my life, and here is what he said sounded like to me:
(not a real quote): "Here at Sprint and/or our store new customers and activation's are the priority."
What he should have said: "I am sooooo sorry. I am not allowed to do that, I absolutely would if I could. How about I order one from the depot for you and let you know as soon as I have an arrival date?"
sigh. So after all that, because I don't have TEP (sprints monthly insureance) I have to pay $35 to get a "new device"
They PROMISED me that it would be new and not refurb. So we will see how that works out.
Thank you for patiently hearing (reading?) my rant......
Hey folks, I've done some searching around and I don't see any similar issue here, so I thought I'd ask around to see if anyone has had any similar experience. My wife has a totally stock, non-rooted AT&T Note 2 and she's having some weird photo issues. Several of the photos that she's taken only partially display in the gallery. Funny thing is, that when they first load, it seems to show the complete for a split second and then part of the image is replaced by some solid color or artifacts. I'm including an attachment here to show an example with a photo of her phone that I took with my Note 2...
Anyone else seen a similar phenomenon? Should I take it to AT&T or send it into Samsung for service, or is there a solution somewhere? For what it's worth...I tried to clear the data and the cache already for the Gallery app, but it made no impact to the situation at all...

I have this problem as well. I'm on Rogers and bought it very close to launch as well. I just came back from a trip and took lots of pics, none of them had the issue. THe ones I had issues were pics from halloween.
I'd be interested to see how this could be resolved (I might flash a custom ROM).
Well, we went to a nearby device support center and they said the Note 2 was too new for them to service the device yet.
Anyway, they directed us to contact AT&T support via phone. It's late tonight, but that's what we plan to do tomorrow.
I've had 3 dealings with at&t customer service and the've all been positive. I trust them over samsung.

You know, funny enough, I really haven't tried them on a PC, but she's emailed a few to me and they were still messed up looking at them on my note 2.
Called the AT&T support line today and they just had her factory reset the phone (after asking all the requisite damage questions of course). We'll see if it happens again...
Make sure to back up because you may wipe important files. If it is a software bug then this will work. Odin the stock file if you want to ensure this. It will wipe all. But is a normal procedure and wont increase flash count or anything.

I have this same problem but only when I have my pics set to save to sd card. Strangely i also had the same problem on my Galaxy S3. Also downloaded pics from internet that are saved to sd card do the same thing. Not sure why.
You know, I started suspecting the SD Card tonight as well. I think I'm going to back up her card and reformat it. Maybe that'll help.
never go to an at and t store for service issues with your phone. They will just piss your time away and frustrate you to no end. They will make you call the friggen warranty department and wait a minimum of two business days to get a refurbished phone or if you are lucky a new phone. If they ship out your phone on Thursday or Friday then you will be waiting until Monday-Tuesday for a new phone. This might not be a big deal for something like a picture problem, but if you had a dead phone you are pretty much f u c k e d.
You might get lucky and be close to one of their warranty centers where an exchange can take place on the spot.
Hi guys, I have a weird problem and I need your advice.
My brand new galaxy Note 3 Sm-N900T is having screen blackouts....
Its like after the screen timeout the screen goes off and then when I press the power button it doesn't go back on again.
Or if I turn the screen off it doesn't go back on again... the buttons are working the sounds are on, I can answer calls and everything but the screen is black.
If I play with it (pressing power or home buttons) for a while it comes back on. Sometimes the phone restarts (rarely, I think because i press power button).
I have tried everything from playing with settings to wiping the cache and resetting the phone few times.
It looks like its a software issue to me, or maybe sensor.. but i think that when power button is pressed the screen should turn on regardless of sensors.
I do have the custom S-Case but I had the issue even before I got that.
Now.. I have few choices :
1. Go to t-Mobile and get a replacement.. probably refurbished, not a fact that the problem will away because I heard of lots of people having this issue ...
I of course do not want to do that.. I have this phone for less than a month.
2. Wait for KitKat....
3. install some kind of custom rom and see if problem goes away.
If anyone can help, Id really appreciate it.
I would do an exchange.. you paid good money for it and a defect is a defect, I wouldn't depend on a 3rd party patch for this

?
go to the store for change this defective note.
This may be jelly bean bug... Lots and lots of people report the same problem...
If I replace my piece I will probably get a refurbished one with a great chance of having this or some kind of another problem......

sucks man.
I know on my htc onei have the purple camera problem but everything else was fine. they had to send me 2 replacements because the first one had a yellow screen and worse camera then mines.
Tmobile doesnt even check there replacement. Most of the time there phones that people traded in. And all they do with those is a power on check.
Now if you just got the phone and within the 14 exchange you can take it to the store and get a brand new one.
Had it for more than 2 weeks now.. since i was always playing with it i did not notice the problem .. (the screen was always on).
I called Samsung and Tmobile. I told tmobile that samsung said i have a defective phone. so Tmobile is sending me a "Like new" phone meaning that someone returned it within 14 days. I get to check it and if i dont like it i will just send them their phone back. and suddenly mine doesnt do the problem for 30 minutes lol.. maybe it got scared. Personally i think that KitKat would fix it.
Any force closes? I had this problem too untill I stopped using the crapy My Magazine bloatware, which was also sometimes force closing...
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
No, no force closes, but one time it was funny, a little bit of status bar appeared from the bottom and on top it was a little bit cutoff.... like someone slid the screen up few pixels.
And whatever was cut just came from the bottom. Its weird... for $700 phone it should be flawless... I hope they dont send me crap phone and i hope they dont send my phone to someone else.
How can i get rid of it to see if that was the problem?
My phone works perfect and I had if since the first week they came out. .. It's not a jellybean thing you phone has a problem. ..

I figured id try to reflash (not data reset, but reflash via Kies) so far so good no problem.
The whole thing looks like soft prob, not hard.
If it comes back Ill let you know. This could be a nice fix if works.
I'm in nyc, and my local store called the warrenty center and got me a brand new SGS2 one time. It still had all the blue plastic in the sim card and sd card slots, and plastic on the screen. So I'm know they can request it, just depends on your store if they are willing.

My sgs2 had problems out of the box. After I installed custom ROM they went away. It does happen. Restored stock via Odin, still no problems. Sometimes the software doesn't flash correctly from the manufacturer.

Well, I dont know what to think anymore... Looks like the problem persists but happens so rare that without the past I wouldnt notice it.
This makes me believe that with KitKat it will probably disappear. If soft changes cause this to go away or be less it means (to me) that the phone is not defective. New phone is still on the way, to bad I did not purchase it at local store... I did it online, so there is no one to yell at.
It will arrive on Feb 6th so I have plenty of time to test my phone, with some luck KitKat will roll out during this time and then I will be able to definitely see. And if new phone is cool I have the option of exchange anyway .
Thank you all for your help, keep posting, its an interesting issue.
:/
Phone went worse and worse everyday ... now the S-Pen "Air Command" doesnt pop up, several weird disfunctions...
Waiting for the replacement.
Sadly my Note's home button no longer works and I'm not sure why. Yesterday I woke up to find that my home button stopped working. Mind you, it's never been dropped or anything. No water exposure, nothing at all. I called Samsung and asked them about it and they said I could send it in for repair except it would take approx 3 weeks and I don't want to be without a phone for that long. I printed out the shipping label they gave me and went about the day. I went out that night and it started working for maybe 3 - 4 hours. After that it stopped again. Anybody know what it may be? And if I took it into ATT do you think they'd swap it out for a new one if I tell them the circumstance? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
I had an issue with my note 4 home button and I called AT&T to ask what I should do because I was worried it would turn into a problem. They shipped a replacement phone to me and I simply sent the old one back. My situation was a little different because my home button worked, but felt extremely clicky which I thought was normal until my wife got the same phone and I realized hers was not like that. I think my replacement phone is refurbished since the battery feels much tighter in the back, but I would much rather take my chances with that over using a defective home button that could stop working at any time.

Just call AT&T and have a warranty refurb shipped out.

No problem, Good luck. I am sure they will help you. Also come to think of it, couldn't the launcher you use also cause that? I would check your default action for home button in the application defaults and see what it is assigned to. Mine is apex launcher since that's what I currently use. Hope that helps.

Try a factory reset and see if that work? its a last resort anyways.

Sorry that it's been so long since I replied. I did try changing the launcher to the stock one from nova, and then to go launcher and that didn't help.
I went ahead and called the warranty department and talked to a lady and she tried to walk me through some things. I found out that ATT can remotely see you phone through this because she was describing where I was at and was talking to me about things I was doing, such as backing up my phone, going through sms, etc. She could also see what apps I updated and the times. I'm not too sure how I feel about them having that sort of access. I ended up factory resetting it and that didn't do anything for me so they said they'd send me a new one out.
A few days after I got a brand new note in the mail. Just the handset though, no s pen, battery, or back cover. I had to keep that from mine. I boxed the defective one back up a few days later and sent it back. Yesterday I got a text saying that ATT received the device and sent it off to their warranty center.
I think that about sums it up. They were pretty easy going about it so that was cool. I had a feeling it was going to be more of a hassle and it wasn't, so that's a big plus for them. I don't think there's much more to it. Everything was free of charge by the way. Thank you guys for your help, I really appreciate it.

That was basically my experience with them as well. Glad you got the replacement and the issue is resolved.
