[Q] SD card storage not accurate after roms. Any ideas why? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It doesn't happen every time. But after flashing multiple roms over the last several months, occasionally my SD card will show that it is much more full than it actually is. It shows the "storage space is getting low" message occasionally. The last ROM showed that my kindle was nearly full. I assumed it was accurate, got rid of a couple larger apps that I had on the SD and ran some SD Maid utilities. But it shouldn't have gained me that much. I ran Hellfire cleaner and installed gederom 1.7 (jelly bean not that great yet IMO). Between internal memory and SD I gained nearly a gig. I haven't lost any data as far as I can tell. Never gained this much, but it has done this before. Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening?

What does Titanium Backup report, space-wise, for each partition?

Don't have my kindle right now but TiB showed something like 482 m internal, 512 m on SD and something around 300 m system or vice versa on internal and SD. Before I installed gederom 1.7 SD was full and internal was around 100 m. Funny thing is even when I had just over 100 m left on SD and over 100m internal Play store wouldn't let me install apps "not enough space". Weird!

External SD card issues?

I picked up a Black Friday A100, and spent the day playing with it, when I discovered that the micro-SD card I installed wasn't being read properly by the tablet. I had pulled it from my Nook Color, and while the A100 seemed to mount the card just fine, it couldn't see any of the contents. After reading a thread where someone else had a similar problem and solved it by replacing the tablet, I exchanged it at Wally World only to discover that this one has the same problem. I've tried multiple SD cards with no luck, and also noticed that the tablet doesn't give me the option of formatting the card.
Anyone else have this same problem? If so, do you have any suggestions for a solution?
Thanks in advance!
i also picked one up yesterday and popped in the SD card from my Nook Color, but I had no issues reading it.
Picked one up myself and had the same problem but found that the microSD is at /mnt/external_sd and not the usual /sdcard. They either have an internal sdcard for the tablet's memory or they have mapped onboard memory to the normal sdcard location.
Enjoy the tablet!

After a bit of research, it seems that the problem isn't with the tablet... it's with my expectations. Apparently, with Honeycomb, Android dropped the ability to move apps to the external SD card. The 8GB internal card is where the apps are installed, and the external_sd is only for media like movies, books, pictures and music. It seems like a strange step backward from Froyo, but it makes sense if a lot of the problems with performance and FCs had to do with apps running off of potentially crappy SD cards.
So... the stuffs still there, but it's just buried under root mnt/external_sd. For things like Titanium back-up, you just need to move the folder to the internal sdcard for the program to see it.
I hope this makes sense.
If you do need to free up some of internal storage (if you have a bunch of games with 200+ mb resource packs) you can install a root-access app called "GL to HD" that lets you move the game files to SD.

8gb tablet only showing 5gb avail whiped

I don't know when this happened but my tablet is missing more then 3gb of avail memory (only shows 5.45gb total space which can't be right) Only thing i can remember that gave me the most trouble was trying to get ubuntu to work on the side with android using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987740 only to find it was getting all sort of errors with the repositories so i ended up deleting it but still i know that seeing a few hundred meg to a gig is normal but a lil over 3gigs missing entirely something gotta be wrong x.x
Anyhelp out there since can't connect this to my mintbox netbook so i could check the partitions an make sure nothing is abnormal
Its totally normal, its what the Android team introduced with Honeycomb, universal storage, all 8GB a100s show 5 or so due to Android system etc.

well i feel like a dork now :x I have a captivate that has ICS on it an it shows 1.83gb used for internal an the remaining 13gb on the internal (16gb cappy) But sheesh lot of memory being used x.x
Ya just how it is. Thats why I have a 32gb sdcard in there for my videos and music. I leave the 5.45gb for apps only. And if I have games that require mass amount of data to be downloaded then I use GL to SD app so it stores those game data to sdcard. Root is required to use GL to SD though. With this setup I havent had the need to delete apps or even bloatware. I'm sure I have over 100 apps in mine.

GL to SD

Theres also a mod to make your SDcard as your internal. So basically the 5.45gb will act like an external drive while your SDcard will be your internal memory. But if you go this route might be good to have class4 card or higher.

I've been using the sd swapped since i got my tablet downgraded back to HC with ICS I was ending up using to much of internal storage with game data an other content.

I hear ya man thats why I'm still on HC till we get perm root. I have tried the SD swap but my 32 gb is almost full already so after I was all done I was left with about 2gb space. About the same if I just went with GL to SD so wasnt really worth going through all the trouble doing the sd swap. Plus I remove my SD card constantly so for my rom to be ran from it wouldn't be a good idea for me.
My 32 GB SD card is on its way, I never thought too much about music etc on my tablet seeing as my phone has 16 GB but now that I practically live with my tab, Daddy needs more space baby

Not enough room to update apps?

Hi guys, in the last few months a strange problem has started appearing on my n7100 with 4.1.1.
It won't update apps, often when the apps are 20 mb+, but it happens with smaller apps too. It says there's not enough room on the device, but the whole time I've had around half a gigabyte on the internal memory, so I can't see what the problem is. Right now it says I have 660 mb free on internal, and 1.35 GB on the sd card.
Sometimes it has helped deleting some apps, but the problem comes back.
Any ideas?

You need like around 500 MB for your other apps to work .. Some apps will write and put files in your internal storage so they can function properly .. You have to delete some of your internal storage ..
You can't put apps in your External SDCard (unless you use some of the apps that makes it do that)..
BTW, update to 4.1.2 it might be the problem

That seems a bit ridiculous to me, when already the effective space is 10.36 GB. I would think that the space it needs to perform, was included in that. My old Htc desire was able to fill up till the memory ran out (which admittedly was very quickly).
No no, I know that, just wanted to give a detailed overview.
I would update, but with all those battery consumption problems I've been hearing about, I'm waiting for the next update, and then I'll see what people are saying.

[Q] Firmware 4.3 'Move to SD feature' broken

Hi guys, I posted this over at android central but I also wanted to post here to get as much help as possible.
"Guys, quick question. I haven't been on stock rom for a long while but I kind of missed using the S-pen and someone suggested a stock-based custom 4.3 rom that I actually like so I've stuck with it for the time being. Now, I never really bothered with move to SD mods because I've learned to use my internal and external memory more efficiently but I figured if it's feature in TW I might as well take advantage since I'll be traveling abroad for two months come Dec. Well I've noticed that even after the apps are "moved" to the SD card, I don't regain any usable space on my internal card. I downloaded a game that's 779MB. My internal reduced from 3GB to 2.2GB. Okay. So I moved the game to my SD card. It moved 778MB to the SD card and 656KB remained on my phone. However, my internal only went from 2.2GB to 2.3GB. What?
I went back and calculated all the games I moved over and I've barely recovered more than 500MB for close to 30 games/apps moved to SD. All the games are still taking up close to their entire size in internal memory. Then what's the point? I have a 64GB class 10 card. Can someone enlighten me on what the hell is going on? I normally would just shrug of when things fail this like this but actually being tempted to use it and then finding it broken is really irritating."
"Also, I should point out that none of the storage is taken up by game data. Usually when I finish game and haven't touched it for a while I just clear data and uninstall. However, I will be traveling with a organization that specializes in providing AIDS/HIV care and education to developing nations, so I will going to multiple small villages across five countries. I'm not counting on having any kind of service for a good majority of the time so I thought "great" I'll take advantage of this new feature and download every game I've ever bought so I have something to occupy my time during the plane/train rides. I haven't downloaded any games on my phone since I got the N7 so every game currently on my phone is newly downloaded and never opened, so, no game data."
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah...I know.

[Q] Internal Storage problem.

Ive had the phone for about a month and my internal storage seems to have disappeared. So it has a 16gb Hard drive in the phone and I have a 16gb SD in the phone as well. When I go into settings, storage and look at the storage its says Ive used 14gb of 16gb, which seems weird because I dont have much installed on the phone. I have continually uninstalled apps to keep my room available but it seems I have less and less apps on it and less and less storage. I then plug the phone in to my PC and also use clean master to see what my storage is and they both say I have 1.7gb remaining out of 10gb.
So my question is where has the 6gb's gone?
TL/DR
Phone says ive used 14gb/16gb but my pc and clean master app say Ive used around 8gb/10gb
Try using app called diskusage, it should help you a bit.
