Now that the great devs hear have finally found a fix for the imei backup and restore does that mean we can flash the other carriers roms as long as we use the correct apn and modem ?
Imei backup and restore does not change anything about compatibility with ROMs built for other devices.

T-Mobile is similar. With that in mind I have never been one to fuss with roms for other carriers that have different hardware
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
No you can't use them and why would you want to? Makes no sense all carrier roms suck to begin with it.

He means roms developed for other carrier devices not stock carrier roms.

Yes and no.
Tmobile- yes, somethings may be broken but the porting script by cpu99 should fix that.
Sprint- not sure but there are ports and a porting script should work
Verizon- no, but the porting script might work
International- no. The script may work on that but why test it, too many people have hard bricks from flashing these.

Let's just keep it simple and say no.

Mostly no. Some T-Mo roms are compatible with this model but it will be stated (or usually is) by the dev in the OP of that rom.

I'm new to installing roms on the s3. I've had many different roms on my old Desire so I'm not entirely new to this, just had a few questions.
How easy is it to lose your imei number when flashing a new rom?
Is it dependent on anything specific?
Easy to fix if it does happen?
Anything else I should be worried about before flashing?
I'm looking at testing out cm10.1 and Task's rom as well as a few kernels.
Thanks.

Imei loss is random.
Best thing to do is to back it up. Easier to back up than to inject it back in manually. (Still not overly difficult but always have a backup)
Nothing to really worry about. Just don't flash a ROM not intended for your phone.

Actually most people loose IMEI going from a custom ROM to a stock based ROM.

So say im just stock att and rooted, and wanted to flash say csrom. do u think i would lose my imei? I had a gs3 last year. I flashed cm10 from the stock rom, then two days later flashed another rom cant rem which one. thats when i lost my Imei. fixed it. then just used my one x. til last week when i got another gs3.. its rooted and and stock right now. guess i just need to back up etc. before flashing just to be sure. etc..
So I guess this is just a problem we sometimes need to live with? Just back it up and restore as needed.

Sounds like it. I have been flashing roms and since my first android, htc hero.. never had a bricked phone or anything etc.. before that win mobile, again never had any issues. as long as you read and pay attention all will be good. I want to flash a rom on this s3 but gotta find the time to back up and such. kinda hard with a wife that's a RN working 12 hour shifts and 3 kids lol..
Yea, same here. I've flashed so many roms and kernels on my old s3. Had no worries ever about changing the partition table sizes and am familiar with adb just haven't found the time to look into all of the s3 stuff yet. I've had the phone since launch but just rooted it for the first time a few days ago.

custom i.e not based on a samsung ROM. It's not common but more common going from custom (aosp, aokp,CM) to any TW type ROM. Just back it up anyway, even though you more than likely will never have to worry about loosing it.

What exactly is the reason that note 2 ROMs aren't compatible with all note 2? If you can flash modem/radios and edit apns then why won't any ROMs work?
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
There is more than one "Note II" some of them have different hardware or are cmda instead of gsm ect. There are different sections for each version so if you go into the section for your specific phone all the roms should work. APN's/modems only go so far but they can enable you to use At&t(i317)/Canadian carrier(i317m) roms and in some cases International LTE (N7105) roms
Flashing a different modem/radio on your device! That isn't for your device, then you'll have yourself quite a bit of problems on your hands. That's why they are different Rom's, for different devices!! For all the other countries!!
But look here!
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Enter your device model# up in the top right. And you'll see all the different Rom's for the different places!!

But if I flashed a Verizon or sprint ROM and while still in recovery flashed my modem (the modem for my phone of course)shouldn't that allow service for the phone. Besides that stuff what is so different file wise that they aren't universal.
BTW I haven't checked the links out yet I will when I get off work.

Ok what you need to UNDERSTAND is that if you flash something that had the modem included! Then you'll be looking at a very expense paperweight:banghead:!!! If no modem then possible you can take that ride??? But personally I wouldn't flash nothing that's not for my phone OKAY!!!
But do as you please to do, it's your device.
Good luck with your choices

I don't understand why so many people insist on flashing roms not found in our very own development section. Those are there for a reason.

Okay so go get one. They work fine.
But to say there is no support for the t mobile version is just misinformed. There are multiple roms specific to it, at least one GREAT kernel (Chronic for TW and AOSP. You don't need any other options in my not at all humble opinion) and most of the various mods and add ons for the 9505 work fine for the t mobile s4.
So what are you looking for that you feel is lacking.

^ This. Really, the only ROMs we don't have that other carriers do are the carrier specific modded TW ROMs; and for the most part, we can run them as well.

I have never ported the roms... I do think if you use any of my roms or from other dev it should just work without any issues, all u need to do is just check ur apn settings to make sure everything is correct so u can get data and mms working. so just make a backup first, then flash the rom..
