Jellybean Developer Challenge - Current Total: $340 - Samsung Captivate Glide

I'm writing on behalf of the Samsung Captivate Glide community here on XDA. We are seeking to establish an X prize style thing to kickstart development for our device. Essentially, users are pledging ten or more dollars to be put into a pool to be awarded to the dev that can give us Jellybean. We feel like this reversal of the regular donation model might be able to attract a dev that might not otherwise take the time. We recognize that it takes a lot of hard work to make a rom, and we'd like to make sure they were at least a little bit compensated.
We've only just started taking names, but its picking up steam quicker than I could have anticipated. I expect that we will exceed our modest goal of $200 fairly easily.
In order for an interested dev to claim the prize, they would need the following:
- Jelly bean running on the captivate glide
- Root access
- all phone functions working (BT, wifi, accelerometer, gps camera, etc)
- Battery life equivalent to what we currently have
- Button Notification Lights
- A paypal account
Current Pledges
Tyfighter - $20
Sbiricuda - $10
Dudejb - $10
Gab1288 - $10
Jayjayjoker2 - $10
Dotachin - $10
TheHow7zer - $10
Pablo 13 - $10
Jonnyleechee - $10
Jlc0312 - $10
Jbstanford - $45
Lookin4trouble - $55
Clockwork58 - $25
Mes3 - $50
Luquiyahni - $25
Ewoload -$20
Antharr - $10
Current Total $340
Because users may discard their Glide in the future because of being stuck on GB, we are setting a tentative deadline of January 1st 2013
NOTE: Once released, we do NOT want to see the rom restricted to paying users, we merely seek to compensate the awesome dev that can pull this off

I think it's a good idea.
Since Samsung is on its way to release ICS (or so they say), we could directly promote a JellyBean ROM

I second this. Since I doubt we will see Jelly Bean on this Device, I would pay 10$ for a Jelly Bean. But if we are going to do this we need a list of people willing to Pay and we need to state what we want on the ROM. Then the other question what about the people who didn't pay do they get access to this ROM (If were nice) Or do we restrict this only to the paying customers??? I am just asking questions not sure which I would choose. We would also make like a cut off date as I will not pay for this in 3 years as I will change phones by then but perhaps 1 year may be acceptable of course we always want it yesterday, but must be logical!!!

Ok, so let's say we settle on JB. And perhaps new year's as a deadline?
Edit: with regards to whether non paying parties should have access, I say of course they should.

Im in, but for CM9 jelly bean, not a modified samsung rom.
-Edit: I think I'm wrong and cyanogenmod jelly bean would be CM10, whatever, you know what I mean
-Edit2: 20$ if: -buttery smooth
-never reboots or freezes
-hdmi works
-dpi is changeable with app
-decent battery life
-within short time, not worth waiting 6 months for this as ill just change the phone.

So what would we need.
* Need Jelly Bean set up on Galaxy Glide (Full Jelly Bean not just a theme)
* Need Root.
* Need All parts of the Phone working including, Camera, WIFI, GPS, Motion sensor.
* Need Battery life to match what we have now at least, if not better.
Optional
* BLN (Button Light Notification)

I wouldnt mind. your right it takes alot of work to make ROM's these devs deserve it
sent from my captivate glide

Ok lets take names as who would be intersted in Contributing a minimum of 10$ If you wish to give more that is up to you.
So far here are the names we have:
-----------------------------------------
Tyfighter - 10$
sbiricuda- 10$ CW10 full JB ROM would be fine.
DudeJB - 10$
Gab1288 - 10$ If CM9 jelly bean
jayjayjoker2 - 10$
Dotachin - 10$ If GPS works in South America
TheHow7zer - 10+$ I'm in for at least $10 for ics, more if jelly bean!
santimaster2000 30$ GPS working for South America & CM10 (JB)
-----------------------------------------
Total so far - 100$

If they also manage to finally make the GPS lock in South America, count me in.
(Yes, yes I already tried everything)

If it don't take more than one month i'm ok with $10,00 for CM9 or JB. Because if it take too long i'll change my phone again, i loved Glide but my old and tired mimmi already has CM9, my GT-1000 is tasting JB and the Glide with better equipment still locked in GB, unfair.

You have to be reasonable it will take longer then a month to make. You have to understand we will be offering hopefully 100-200$ not Thousands so the Developer will still be doing this part time.

I'm in for at least $10 for ics, more if jelly bean!

Count me in with $ 20 for a fully functional ICS AOSP ROM with GPS working for South America, if we are talking about CM10 (JB), then count me in with $ 30.

The important thing to remember here guys, is that if you do pledge your money - while you are not technically on the hook so to speak, you will obviously be expected to pay up when and if the day comes. I don't mean to be a nag, but its a crucial part of the plan

Kind of have to keep your Word. Or this all falls apart.

I sent a link and some info to android central, hopefully we can get even more people in on this.

Android is kind of open source. We all usually find support and encoding and developing for free, so I respect this idea and this spirit. That's why I am on android and not on iOs.. so I'd let non-contributers get the ROM.
I'm in with my 10$ bucks.. a CW10 full JB ROM would be fine.
Please don't forget to insert a wide range of languages, as some developers who built custom glide Rom didn't feel the need to do so. No critics intended, it's just to say. But that's the main reason for I stay with (rooted) stock ROM.
So please don't forget: spanish (another user asked for it, but i don't remember who), italian (ciao by me!) and if possible arab.

I second this. No way to downgrade, of course.

I'd happiliy chuck a tenner in the pot for a couple of jelly beans
Would need to be fully functioning camera, battery life, all the essentials covered.

I'm in for $10
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium

i'd throw in $10 for a slick upgrade.

So I caved and bought a Galaxy Nexus - few questions

I know I've made a few topics across XDA (and other forums) regarding my next phone, but after heavy consideration, I ordered a Galaxy Nexus, and the following case in black:
http://www.obostore.com/imak-colorf...slim-case-for-samsung-nexus-prime-p-3941.html
(I just really like the design - not concerned about protection level since I'm great with my tech)
Anyway, a few questions. I've used an AOKP ROM on my G2 with and without a tablet UI for a little bit, so I'm a little familiar with ICS and its features, but one thing I'm not sure of - what apps are specific to ICS and/or the Galaxy Nexus (other than Chrome and Google Wallet)?
Must-have mods/tweaks or ROMs? I haven't delved into it much, but so far, I'm liking ParanoidAndroid for the hybrid phone/tablet support and MIUI v4 for the looks, but looking for anything else is like a needle in a haystack - I have no idea which ROM is actually better/faster than the other.
Disadvantages of rooting the Galaxy Nexus? I know Play Movies doesn't work (but I'm not concerned since I don't use it), but does Wallet still work? Any other apps/functions affected?
Must-have accessories? I'm looking at getting an MHL adapter at some point, but I want to stay away from any docks (at least for the moment) just because of how expensive the official ones are, and not sure if there's any other such accessories I should go for.
Cool housing replacements? I've looked at tear-down videos and the Galaxy Nexus seems really simple to take apart, and I've seen white housing replacements, but I'm wondering if there are any other nice colors available.
Where can I get the official extended battery back/door? From what I understand, the case I'm getting won't fit the new battery door, but by the time I scrounge up the $50 or whatever the kit costs, I'll probably be bored of it and want a new one (not too big on having multiple cases, but I wouldn't mind another nice one just to have a little variety).
Any other things I need to know about the Galaxy Nexus? Don't tell me anything gaming-related - not too concerned both because I'm not a fan of touchscreen gaming, and I intend on getting a used Xperia Play for gaming purposes only.
I forgot to mention that I bought the GSM version off the Play Store.
Anyway, I did a little research, and it seems like everybody prefers the recent JB ROMs - are the JB features/enhancements really that good?

Welcome to the world of rooting
All your questions stem from an assumption / insecurity regarding rooting and trying out things.
There are not that many ROMs out there, learn nandroid, keep a stable copy on the PC. And just try these things out - it's so easy to jump around on ROMs (I've tried 2/3 in one day) that within a few tries you would settle down with something.
Lot of it is subjective, but one thing that remains constant - its safe to root. just follow the guide properly, and do not screw up installing CDMA roms on GSM and other goof ups like that.
happy rooting. (and you can unroot as you probably already know - so its not a one way street)
but then, once u discover the charms - it actually is a one way street
p.s the movies work with root now I believe. I'vent tried but read about it somewhere.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with rooting and whatnot and have no issues with it, I was just wondering if there's some specific exception against it. And I may just load a few ROMs onto the device and try them out before I put my SIM in and start using it as my phone. Any recommendations (other than something JB-based)?

AOKP
CM9
and as you noticed, paranoidAndroid is just awesome (based on CM9. its hard to go to any other ROM after the customizations this one offers in using the real estate of your screen)
can try bigxie's APEX, fairly generic and combination of options
then franco kernel, supposed to be one of the fastest and most efficient kernels out there

Here is a response that was given my a verizon employee for a customer who requested about jelly bean update status for his Nexus.
Good evening XYZ(Name Removed),
*
This is G (Name Removed) and I do not use excuses. I use truth.* I know you are not alone in feeling that Verizon is "dragging their feet" on this update to the software.* I have no specific date for release nor would I try to invent one just to lead you on.* You are not asking for dismissive answers.
*
HSPA + is different from LTE/CDMA (Verizon's network), so the update available to one carrier will not necessarily work on another.* That's it, that's the simple truth.*
The same model phone needs one type of programming to work on HSPA+ and another type to work on LTE/CDMA.* Therefore, any software update for an Android phone will need input from the manufacturer, Google, and the carrier.
*
I will not pretend to know which, if any, of those three parties are "dragging their feet", Randy.* Please check for the new software directly from your phone at your convenience so that you will be one of the first to get it when it becomes available.
*
Sincerely,

Vicious is decent, some of the other ROMS have too many tweaks for me, I just wanted something stable to hold me over till AOKP. I found many of the other JB ROMS get updated way too often for my taste, and it's always some weird tweak or bug fix.
In the end try a few and see what works better for you.
I am rocking on BuglessBeast nightly 7/14. Very stable and great battery life!

I am very tempted to try BuglessBeast, as it was my first ever custom ROM from back in my Captivate days and the speed improvement was incredible. However I can't imagine anything being faster/smoother than my current setup so I'm holding out for the time being.
Vicious with Lean Kernel and Trickster Mod works well for me. G/F is running Vicious with Faux Kernel and no problems on her end. Thinking about trying out JellyBelly over on Rootzwiki w/ the lean kernel.
The newest Vicious is nice and fast....however, the MMS compression is horrible--be warned.
Please post Questions in the Question & Answer (Q&A) sections.

If you do, might as well wait until tonight, word is 3.8 will be available this evening.

if I buy one with ICS, would I be able of updating it to JB?

So my question is pretty simple:
if I buy a Galaxy Nexus from someone on eBay (a Galaxy Nexus that is not for sprint or verizon) and the phone comes with ICS:
would I be able of updating it to the latest version of Jelly Bean, so the phone is just like the ones that the Play Store is selling right now?
PLEASE LET ME KNOW! AND SORRY IF THE QUESTION WAS TOO STUPID, BUT I JUST WANT TO BE SURE THAT I'LL HAVE A STOCK-STABLE JELLY BEAN VERSION ON MY PHONE
Unless he said he bought it from the Play Store, just statistically the chances are it won't come with "takju" or "yakju" firmware on it (and considering it still has ICS, I'm about 99% sure it isn't takju/yakju). This means that the device isn't updated by Google, but rather Samsung. More broadly, that means that it won't get an OTA for a while, as the Samsung updated devices are slower on the OTA train than the Google ones.
Doesn't really matter though, as if you're willing to spend a few minutes figuring out how to run a command line, you can flash any GSM Galaxy Nexus to "takju" firmware, and be on 100% stock 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, and receive OTAs directly from Google from that point. If you do so, I highly recommend you follow this post, which will give you an idiot-proof guide to flashing to stock takju: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
Basically though, think about how much you're paying for that eBay phone and consider just buying one from the Play Store for $349. It's a fantastic deal and you'll get a brand new phone with a complete manufacturer's warranty. Something to think about.
thank you some much, amazing help here!

Thanks a lot for your answer, you solve all my questions about the topic, I really appreciate it!
So I did as you told me because I found it was a good advice, so I bought the phone from the Google Play Store and actually it came with ICS, but as soon as I synced it with my google account immediately offered me upgrading to Jelly Bean, so now the phone has the 4.1.1 version.
The phone is fast just out of box so that's pretty good, but I was reading about Trinity kernel I'd like to hear your opinion about. To be more exactly, does it worth it to change the rom and kernel considering how fast already is? There is big improvements in battery without loosing too much stability?
Please let me know your opinion as I consider that you're really well informated

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.
It will have 4.2 before we even get 4.1
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

*shrugs* there was an update from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4
I know what you're saying tho... I always look at devs like the CM team who have already put out updates way before the OEM and think... how come a billion dollar company is so slow?
I wish carriers would allow users to do soak tests and **** before release to send bug reports and stuff.

By the time we even get Android 4.1, Android 4.2 will already be out in the market.
First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!
This phone is awesome straight out of the box. I'm just a flash junkie and I love new shiny stuff. I wonder if there's a support group for flash addicts?
I dont understand why carriers have to tweak the software when samsung already does it. I dont think carriers change the software that much that it takes so long. Someone please enlighten me

Its not the OS they are changing, it takes them this long to make their BS bloatware work.

Well and doing carrier certification. I think that's more of what ends up taking a long time than updating any carrier add-on software.
Sprint is receiving their OTA to JB starting today. So I'm sure we're not too far behind.

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...

[Q's]Looking at getting one of these

Hey all, I've been informed by my carrier (Rogers Canada) that I'm eligible for a phone upgrade- and the Optimus G is one of the cheap options!! I have a few questions for the community before I'm totally sold...
1) How big are the /system and /data partitions? I'm on an old Optimus One and it's PAINFULLY low on storage.
2) Any word on NFC working in CM 10.1? I've done searches and whatnot but it seems to be quite the quandary right now. NFC is a pretty big draw for me and unfortunately I read that the hardware chip is different from the Nexus 4.
3) What is the latest root-able stock ROM? A lot of guides I see advise against going past 4.0.3, but I would like to run 4.1 (Google tells me an update was released in December) .
4) What are the odds of custom kernel/ROM support going forward? I have no idea what the community is like for this phone, and these boards look rather sparse. Hack-ability is a big (perhaps the biggest) feature for me too.
I really am leaning towards this phone- it's either the G or a Note 1, and it's a tad behind the times (dual core, 1 gig/ram). Though the Note 1 does have a really active hacking community.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply. Cheers!
Keep everything stock, just root it and delete all the bloat ware.. works great.
1)On korean version sysyem is 2gb and data 25gb

no idea but it's a 32gb phone, there is probably no problem with it.

no rom support NFC or hardware cap keys as of now

The latest Rogers is rootable (it's easier to root first and update later, keep root). Korean 4.1 update is rootable so I would guess Rogers 4.1 will also be rootable. We actually have a pretty good Can Dev community.
4) What are the odds of custom kernel/ROM support going forward? I have no idea what the community is like for this phone, and these boards look rather sparse. Hack-ability is a big (perhaps the biggest) feature for me too.
As of now there isn't much custom roms (you can see that yourself) But there is lots of potential.

I also got a OG from Rogers and I might sell it and just use my N4. Storage is not an issue for me. More money in my pochet in the end and endless community support.
I would get a LGOG. The Note is really old and it's going to be two generations behind once new phones are launched in Q1 2013.
Wow, thanks for the replies! All that's left now is hope Rogers doesn't try and pull a fast one on me.
Update: The phone's on order! Can't wait to play around with my new device.

I tend to agree. I was planning on flashing some ROMs, but after playing around with the phone for a few days, I must say I actually like LG 's Android skin. Not as heavily skinned/modded as Sense, but enough tweaks to add to the stock experience rather than detract from it.
In my opinion anyway.

Once you get it, root it, unlock it and throw the jelly bean Rom on it.. I loved my phone before but I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is better now.. more responsive, some nice built in features and better battery life..

I'll probably stick with the stock ROM for a while. It'll be nice when some replacement kernel's start turning up. I use CIFS a lot on my current phone, and I would like to have OTG. Hmm, I might be able to insert the relevant modules once I have root...
Hell, if it ever gets Android 5 officially I might not have to flash a third party ROM at all .
