I notice the SMS/MMS notification tone works fine when receiving a text, but if I allow my conversation with someone to grow to a large amount of messages within the thread the tone will eventually not work anymore when receiving messages (or it will only play a quick blip of it). I can fix this by deleting the entire message thread. Really odd and I've noticed it with more than one person. Perhaps there is a glitch with my device, anyone else experience this or care to test it out?
Just some clarification, this is only when the thread is large rather then many texts within a certain amount of time?
I have some very large threads going with more then 1,000 messages in one and have not experienced this issue. Perhaps you could use an SMS backup app in the mean time so you could keep the conversations archived for whatever reason but clear them out from time to time as needed

This seems to be the symptoms of setting the Text Message limit (mine is 200) and also setting "Delete old messages". When it reaches this limit it has to play the notification sound and also delete the oldest message in the thread. What happens when you turn the delete setting off. Does it play the sound correctly?

Correct, many messages within the thread. Does not matter the amount of time they're being received.

You may be on to something! I'll remove the settings, continue using, and report back. Thanks!
BTW this should have gone in Q&A yes?
I hit 200 in one of mine yesterday, I turned the setting for "Delete old message" off and the notification sound works properly again.
Interesting bug.
I'm having the same issue....
Its been a week or so now and i have not experienced the short tone issue. Seems to be an odd bug.
Ok wow this just happened to me too today. I thought tasker was acting up.

My alarms are already spotty at best. I've caught them going off for 1 or 2 seconds and then silencing themselves. This morning I did not hear my alarm go off at all and instead woke up to some very strange text messages I had just sent.
I left Google Voice open last night as I was texting someone and the text window was open. Instead of my alarm going off, a bunch of random garbled text started getting sent out. I don't know if it was the vibration (I never heard the vibration but I could have slept through it) causing buttons to accidentally be hit or if it was some weird redirection of alarm "go off" commands being redirected to the nearest text area.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? I notice similar random text messages sometimes waiting as drafts for me after backing up and restoring text messages.
That sucks! Are you running a custom ROM? if so would you by chance be using a 'Vanilla' Lock Screen?

I'm 100% stock unrooted fully updated.
wow, I have absolutely no idea! sorry! I would think it would have to be an app doing that. Can you recreate the issue? if you can, post it and I will try to do it on my phone.
Have you tried using a diffrent alarm app one from the market

I seem to be having a problem with the messaging app (the HTC one)
While typing a message, for some reason, the app will scroll upwards slightly (not to the top of the thread, just a bit up so the text box is JUST out of view). I then have to scroll back down to continue typing. Does anyone know why this might be happening, and if I can do anything to stop this?
Thanks
In landscape or portrait?
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
Only landscape as far as i know. I'm not sure if it happens in portrait since I only ever reply to texts in landscape.
I'm having a similar issue where the phone will start doing things on its own. I'll go to start sending a message and it will scroll and press random buttons.
Has anybody seen anything like this before?
Yup I have the same, strange and quite irritating.
I get this too, don't think it's happened in portrait for me yet, just landscape.
Also, when I'm deleting text it'll sometimes pop up the screen letting me delete messages instead of the text, so I have to go back and reclick the box to carry on again.
I've also noticed that sometimes I'll get like a new text message notification after I've replied to a new text, even though I've obviously read it?
This is quite frustrating after a while, can anyone look into this?
Im having same issue as well.
On top of that my received messages from people are time stamped a couple hours behind. Not sure whats going on here

Does anyone else have a problem with the phone typing in CAPS right after you slide out the keyboard?
Also, anyone know how to tweak it so when i press "enter" it sends the message?

I also have this happen to me, and the caps this has happened to me too. I hope this is fixable.
Hey guys,
just to update my findings, it sure seems to me that it's a light-sensor issue. Most of this happens in low or inconsistent light scenarios. In my case it happens specifically under or near one lamp in the early morning.
Can anybody else verify that it's happening in situations like this?
I'm seeing this scrolling issue too. As has been said, it looks like it's due to the program loading up all the previous messages, i.e. when it's finished doing that it then "jumps".

this is also exactly what is happening to me. perhaps a future update or a custom ROM might fix this..can anyone confirm?
I'm still very new to Android. Is the messaging app an HTC thing (my own guess) or a standard Android utility ?
Check this thread, particularly post 22 onwards, for details on how to replace the HTC version of the SMS app with another one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846231
To answer my question above - yes, it looks like the stock version is an HTC app, not an Android one.
Can confirm it's a HTC app. On my old HTC HD2 I used a total clean 2.2 android rom and the app is very different
Got both scroll and CAP problem, sometimes
I have the scrolling problem and also my sms notification does not clear from the notification window shade unless I click on it there. Going directly into the messaging app and reading/replying to the sms leaves the notification there.
I was using ChompSMS but that gave me jip with repeatedly sending the same sms again and again, so i switched to the standard HTC sms app - which has these problems!
had the same problem... handcent doesn't have this problem, and I installed a rom with the stock sms app (villsion) and have had zero issues since!
Yeah, switched to the vanilla messaging app and all is well.
When I receive a SMS, the phone wakes up.
Having a hard time finding the setting to turn it off...any insight?
bump for this - I don't see why the screen needs to come on every time a sms message comes in. I haven't seen this happen with email(exchange), gmail, GTalk, etc... so annoying to waste battery for no reason with the LED indicator enabled.
I've looked and looked and don't really see anyone complaining about this, which I find really strange.

bump - seriously no one cares about this wasting battery for no reason?
No one has found an answer? Just got the AT&T version and I do about 20,000 texts a month, so this is very annoying and wastes battery, ESPECIALLY since it has a notification LED.
I got so tired of it, that I just switched over to handcent.

Just called Samsung and he searched and put me on hold for a while and came back saying there is no way to change this. He recommended downloading a 3rd party texting app or seeing if there is an app that will do this :/
here is a fix from the Sprint GS3

Just tried to flash, didn't see any changes in the Messages settings. Not the screen toggle or mms server issue

It was annoying me as well, the only fix I found without switching to another app is to go to Settings in the messaging app and make sure everything is unchecked under Notifications. If you do this, you will no longer see new text messages in the notification bar, but if you want you can use Nova launcher premium that has an add on called Tesla unread plug in (it adds a number to a messaging shortcut when new sms arrives).
Hope this helps.
Any ideas why this is happening? My notification tone (the old spice commercial jingle) does not always finish playing when I get a notification. Sometimes it plays the entire jingle, other times it doesn't. At first I thought maybe another notification was interrupting it but it happens when I get single notifications. I then changed notification tones and it does it on another one also.
Any ideas?
Try unchecking delete old messages in sms settings.
If thats not it try some other settings. I cant remember the exact fix for sure but it has been addressed a few times on here in the past.

I tried that, it does this for other notifications also: email, RedditSync, calendar, etc.
I have had this happen before as well. Even did a factory reset the first time it happened thinking it may have been caused by something I installed.

Now that you mentioned that, I uninstalled Lightwave LED notifier utility. Lets see if that is causing any issues.
The notification noise (for texts, and I don't know if it's for anything else) just runs forever and ever until I actually open handcent or the stock messaging app. I've looked through settings and don't see anything that clearly says it'll turn that off. How do you do that?
All my notifications only ring once. Is it handcent? Are you on a certain rom?

it only happens to texts. it happened before and after I installed handcent. it's annoying and weird
In your text app Go to Settings> Message Alert Repetition where you can adjust how often it will notify you.

I already turned off notifications in the stock texting app so it was like I don't have it installed without actually uninstalling it. I'll see if it's one of those things that magically goes away on its own after a while.
Did you try looking at the settings in Handscent for the same type of setting?
Something Experimental...
Yeah :/
Yep, your not alone. I have the same issue when using GoSMSPro. As best as I can tell this is an issue when you use a Third Party SMS app. FYI: I am on a custom ROM and have the issue. If I uninstall Go SMSPro the issue disappears.
