Nowadays the rule of thumb is to never use ROM manager to install cwm unless its specifically stated to do so by devs for that particular model. I've seen it cause too many bricks. It may work but it may also brick u. U are better off using the recovery provided here.

I am currently running TWRP to see if the IMEI goes missing using it. If so we can rule CWM out of possibilities.
Gotta say though, I am liking it more than CWM. Give TWRP a try.

Well, if you've checked the IMEI thread and read my posts I've done quite a lot today using TWRP. Even restored back to stock unrooted via Odin straight from JB AOKP. I'm not sure if it's how CWM does something with the partitions or what. I used TWRP because there weren't any reports, so I wanted to test and see.

I'm coming from being a heavy htc user. What is the benefits of having these files. What can these files do that source code cannot?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
This is the bone stock file that. Ame loaded on the phone. These will fix most problems people run in to. They have the modem, system, bootloader, and cache.
So odin files is to Samsung as ruu is to htc? Any hope for multi task screen Or should I not count on it?

Yup, just like an RUU. It won't really have anything to do with multiview, but with the files available, devs can get a little more creative and try new things without worrying about having no way to bring the phone back if they mess up. So that could potentially get people working on multiview.

1+ Do not, I repeat, DO NOT flash custom roms, recoveries, kernels, ANYTHING until you are sure you know what you're doing! Unless of course you need a $700 door stop or maybe you have table with a short leg and need to stuff something under that short leg to balance the table.

Hi I am new here and I would like to root my device to make it my own and get rid of all the apps that came with it, but I have a few questions.
1, Once I am rooted which rom is the best for my AT&T GN2?
2, Will I still be able to update my GN2?
3, What happens if I messed up during the rooting process?
4, And how often do I need to change roms?
5, Is rooting the way to go?
I am going to be dead honest here, I am a girl and some of the steps of rooting I dont quite understand, if someone can help me explain things I will be so happy.

1. Try each rom out and find out what YOU like. I personally use CleanRom 4.0.5 with no problems.
2. Why update when custom roms are better than stock roms?
3. If you mess up thats on you. But its not to hard root. I rooted and installed a custom rom before leaving the att store.
4. If you find a rom that you like you will most likely flash a new rim once its updated.
5. Yes rooting has many advantages. Ex. Wifi tethering, removing bloatware, custom roms, etc.....

No. You can be rooted using the "stock" rom you are using now out of the box. You will have the ability to delete apps using the app mentioned before.
If and when you do decide to install new roms. You will have to install a recovery. Which that exynos abuse apk does not include.
A recovery is a whole other thing.
For recovery I use twrp.

I'll be honest, this smells of a "phone won't turn on" thread in the near future. You're not ready to root your phone and go playing around in recovery. You might be ready to root once you'd studied up on exanose abuse and the rooting concept in general. But right now I would hold off if I were you. TBO the Gn2 runs so well out of the box that you're almost there anyway. Make sure you are confident that you will know how to do each step BEFORE you attempt to root, and are sure you have another web-enabled device so that you can come here for questions while your Gn2 is down.
Let's us know what you decide...

your phone your choice
Benefits of rooting? Basically none for me. Yeah sure you can play with stuff. Install custom roms... void your warranty etc
I always rooted and installed custom roms but decided to go stock and only bother updating roms when updates are officially released and havent missed root one little bit.
It greatly depends on what your trying to achieve. If getting stuff done with no disruption, stability and an intact warranty are important to you then stay stock. If you enjoying tinkering, flashing "new" roms etc then go for it!
I was burned though, i got the complete piece of crap that is the htc one x last year. Voided my warranty with htc dev unlock THEN found out the phone had many issues due to awful build and quality control. I then vowed to never buy htc again. Bought an s3 then an lte note 2 and wont be looking back

I'm new to rooting/flashing roms, kernels etc but i can tell you... Do your research before thinking you're god. If you're unsure how to do it, research it.
When you 'think' you know how to do it, read more. Only do things when you are 100% sure you can.

Glad that you realize theres nothing like a good root.
I wouldn't sweat rooting until you find an app that you want that requires root.
There are plenty though. My root apps:
Afwall+ - firewall
catlog - browse logcat (for debugging apps)
cerberus - security program
LBE security master - block apps from using various permissions
multi window manager - use any app in multiwindow
quickboot - nice boot program, makes it easy to boot into recovery mode.
titanium backup - backup/restore your phone or programs
xposed installer/settings - change dpi for individual programs
directory bind - Put game data on external SD card so they don't fill your phone up.
And of course, install roms and junk.
Changing/randomly adding things is more customizable if you have root - cool bootup movie, lightsaber sound when you pull out the stylus, etc etc.
- Frank
