I am a new owner of a Sprint Galaxy S3. For the first few days, it worked perfectly. But now, for the last week, call quality has been crap. I found that this issue is mostly when the mobile network selection is set to LTE/CDMA/EVDO. When set to CDMA only it's at least understandable. I rooted it so I can try to upgrade the radio. I installed the lg8 update, but that has not helped at all. Any suggestions? Has my phone developed a hardware failure?

Good to hear it is not only me... and it may very well be related to the LTE/CDMA switch! I only just switched that on on Friday I believe and over the weekend all I had was folks telling me they couldn't understand me! I'll switch back and see what happens.
I'm in ATLANTA so was hoping to snag some LTE goodness but haven't yet run across any so I guess I won't miss LTE if I switch it off!

I think I just figured it out! I installed a CPU settings app and found that the cpu was running at about 2/3rd it's full speed. As soon as I cranked the min speed all the way up, my call quality improved dramatically.. I wish I knew how this suddenly became a problem, unless I'm just didn't notice the exact time of the call quality problem..
As I fiddle with it more, It looks like these cpu control programs are not working quite right and possibly setting the cpu speed to much lower than the menu says it is. I'm not sure how to get around this.
Anyone know what file I need to edit to set the defaults back?.. or a good free cpu control app that works properly on this device? SetCPU doesn't seem to have a free or demo version anymore.

Has anyone else install Freeza's boot animation CPU speed fix? Now that I'm thinking about it, this problem actually started after I installed that.
Basically, it manifested itself as, after coming back from sleep, calls would be "droppy" kind of like how they are with a really bad signal. Both sides were impossible to hear, but it would never actually drop (nevermind, absolutely full signal). But a reboot would help it until a little while later when I had to reboot.
This was on Blazer 1.7 with Freeza's fix installed. Does anyone else's situation match that? Also, does it go away permanently if the governor is set to performance?

I was having the same problem and after a little digging around in the menus I found under Phone dialer/call settings/Additional Settings is "Noise Reduction". It was on by default. I turned it off and call quality is much better. I was getting choppy audio on both ends of the conversation - very similar to my experience with a fancy Motorola bluetooth headset. It was cutting out more than just noise. Don't know if this is the same problem you are having but it's worth a try. Good luck.
Ok, all of my working with it seems to be in vain. It isn't the cpu, it isn't signal, I think it's just a defective radio. Just need to have it checked out at Sprint and likely replaced. Can't have a phone that no one can understand me when they call.
Had my wife take my phone to the Sprint store for them to check it. Switching phones did not fix the problem. They say it's some kind of network problem. Their advise is to make sure the mobile network setting is set to CDMA and not use the LTE network.
I'm thinking of asking for a refund of the $10 a month they charge for 4g because if I try to use it, the phone is useless.

I was wondering if anyone else has this issue. I think most people know by now the issue we all ran into with 4G after we flashed roms with the new OTA update. The 4G would just be stuck at "scanning...." and never connect.
Anyways, I did manage to fix the 4G issue using bigbiff's steps here. So now the 4G connects with no issues but there's one problem: when I leave 4G area or go indoors and come back into 4G area it won't reconnect by itself. I have to either turn on and off 4G or hit the "Scan" button.
If anyone can give me any insight or ideas as to what's going on that would be very awesome.
I have the same problem, and I have seen at least one other person mention this problem (it's kind of hard to search the forum for this problem, since all you get are the folks having problems connecting to 4G).
This started after the OTA update. If the 4G signal fades out, the 4G status remains in "scanning" even in known 4G areas. I made one 4G change to try and fix this - I changed the wimax_idle_sleep time from 10 to 300 as was recommended in the 4G problem posts.
I am wondering if anyone knows what the other 4G settings do and if any of them would fix the problem. So far the only way I know to reconnect to 4G is to turn the radio off and on.
I posted this in another forum, the more frequented one. I thought it was more applicable there since this might be an issue concerning rooting, custom ROMs, home ROM flashing, or all the above. Until I see a wave of non-rooted users complaining about this, I think Sprint has found a gotcha for rooters and flashers. Input from some ROM developers would be nice if they happen to visit this forum.
I can enter a 4g area, turn on 4g, and connect. When I leave a 4g area, turn off 4g, then turn 4g back on before re-entering 4g area and enter a 4g area, it is stuck scanning. It never attaches to the 4g network in the area I entered. If I turn 4g off and on while in 4g area, it will connect.
Are unrooted stock users having these problems? It is a real let down and PITA. Is 4g working perfectly in all scenarios for any rooted user?

I also think it's related to one of the images we have to flash to get root, as the behavior is definitely different than stock. I noticed this after I first rooted / nand unlocked my phone, but before I applied the new radio & wimax. On my phone, however, 4G does eventually come back up. It might take 5 minutes or more, but it does eventually reconnect.
I'm not sure that it's really a bug though. I actually prefer this behavior because it results in fewer dropped connections when switching between 3G and 4G. For streaming apps (Rhapsody, Pandora, Youtube, etc) the frequent switching forces you to have to start the stream over. I think it might have been an attempt to increase the stability of the data connection at the expense of having a 4G connection less of the time. Could be a hold over from one of the older engineering builds we had to flash during the rooting process? It's strange that the behavior persists after flashing a new radio/wimax, but maybe it's actually controlled elsewhere.
Add me to the list. This is from my post about 20 hours ago which hasn't received any bites:
I have seen various issues reported:
1) 4g won't turn on. PERIOD.
2) 4g turns on but only scans - never connects.
3) 3g/4g alternate so there is never a stable connection.
4) 4g turns on and connects but after a while disconnects and won't reconnect until it is toggled on/off with the widget or check box in settings.
I used to have #3 until I did whitslack's "start over" method and now I have #4. I've changed my wimax idle sleep time to 300 in ##data# and verified a good MAC so other than the 2 evo last resort method I think I've tried everything other than the above.
So, does anyone know if renaming/moving macaddress.tree.xml is for my issue #4? Or does anyone know a specific fix for #4?
If it matters I rooted with toast 1/2 and am still on the rooted stock ROM from whitslack's "start over" method.

Some Observations:
I've noticed the following differences since the OTA (with Root-from the "How to Start over with 1.47.651.1" thread):
1. The 4G reconnection problem.
2. Bluetooth no longer auto connects when my headset is in range.
3. I have been getting "Error 67 Data Connection Lost" errors. This error blocks me from 3G data connectivity for a few minutes. During this time, "Mobile Networks" shows "Turning On" in the settings.
I suspect it is one of the following:
a. There is still a radio problem with the rooted OTA
b. the PRI that has not been updated since the root crack matters with this release.
c. Sprint/HTC introduced some new bugs.
d. Some hardware settings need to be tweaked (like the timeout that folks are changing from 10 to 300).
So we need to figure out who is having this problem, and under what circumstances.
I did however note something very interesting. I have repeated this 4 times today. If the 4G disconnects and stays in scanning, if you then place a call it will immediately reconnect. This leads me to believe that it is indeed a setting, and a voice call triggers it (if you recall in May, Sprint was saying that they hope to have Simultaneous Voice and 4G - so there is probably some code to trigger 4G at this point).
What do you folks think.

I would take C out because I have not read complaints by non-rooted users.
The latest PRI is 1.40_003. Right?
Who can bring this over? ROM developers say those features are not part of what they do. If not them, then who?

I think being rooted currently sucks. One of EVO's greatest strengths, connectivity, has been crippled.
sw99, did you try the move the xml file with your mac address solution? If so, I guess it didn't make any difference.

I will try making a call tomorrow when this happens and report back.
I had the same problem pre-root.
I wont be able to help anybody too much with technical stuff 'cause I'm basically a non-technical guy, but I've had the same problem with wimax dropping & not reconnecting ever since the OTA update (1.47....). I went to a Sprint store & the guy just went cross eyed, so it may not be too common.
In my case the connection will SOMETIMES come back on its own with a really strong signal, but rarely.
I just rooted tonight so I have no idea if it's worse or not, but I'll find out tomorrow, eh?
I've also had difficulty with Bluetooth automatically connecting, but I have a new stereo so I don't know where the issue lies.

Nope. Didn't touch the xml file, as my 4G was connecting, and the fix was for 4G just scanning.
I still think we can tweak the WIMAX settings and make it come back faster.

Well at least its faster than toggling the 4G radio - just find a friend with a mobile phone so you don't waste any minutes.

Just dial your own number which takes you to voice mail and shouldn't waste minutes. I'll probably put a direct dial shortcut on my home screen until a solution comes along. Not that I'm worried about wasting my regular minutes....I used 29 of 450 on my last bill!
I can now confirm that moving/deleting the xml file does nothing for our problem. At least not on my EVO.
So, I've been looking at the WIMAX settings (using ##DATA# and my MSL).
There are some settings that look like they could be effecting this problem. Be forewarned, however, that some of the values preset are not considered "valid" when you make a change (leading me to add credence to my theory that HTC/Sprint goofed), so I'm hoping a nandroid backup will recover them. Open each parameter and deleting the values, gives you a popup of the valid values and units.
Here is what I tried so far:
wimax_idle_sleep(s) changed from 10 to 300 seconds - effect: little to none.
wimax_scan_attempt_timeout(s) changed from 1 to 20 seconds - effect: little to none. (note only 5-300 are valid values after this change).
Other parameters that look interesting and their default values:
Wimax_scan_retry(s): 300 Seconds
Wimax_entry_delays(s): 300 seconds
wimax_exit_delay(s): 2 seconds
idle_mode_timer: 60 seconds
Standby Time: 10 Minutes
handoff Threshold: 6
Anyone willing to mess with these (at the risk of losing Wimax, of course)?
That is one place I'm not going to mess around. I saw a stern warning about that recently on the dev forum.

I had posted this in someones thread just thought I would rephrase the topic. Just got of the phone with sprint after 2 hours of troubleshooting. They made be restart my phone a million times didn't work, they made me reactivate the phone didn't work, and finally got transfered to someone with a bit of knowledge and its been working so far.
what they did with me on the was:
1. go to settings
2. system updates
3. update profile
4. restart
It hasn't gone to **** yet hope this works for the long run not for now.
Once again this is temporary fix until they figure out whats going on with the phones.
Its a samsung phone, for some reason they have some of the weakest gps signal I've dealt with...
it's because it's a cdma samsung phone. every single cdma samsung phone i've ever used or owned has had absolute terrible gps signal and support. granted, this phone has the best gps signal of any cdma samsung phone i've used yet, it's still ****ty in comparison with HTC.
gsm samsung phone dont seem to be plagued with terrible gps support.
I agree, I just switched from a HTC EVO 3D and never had any problems. That sucks because it's a great phone.
HTC EVO and evo3d, moto photon never had GPS problems, my samsung moment and ET4g always have, cdma has nothing to do with it.
I think one of the biggest things Samsung really needs to improve upon is software development and programming. Compared to other smartphone manufacturers, they suck at it.
Thats amazin...Ive never had a problem with GPS thru Sprint on all my EVO phones and now the Galaxy...Ive had many a custom Roms on here and still never a problem...Locks in Seconds...Only problem was with the ICS builds ...but there was a fix for that ...So now still on a ICS build fb21...Locks in seconds...
evo 3d no problems at all. the moment i switched to e4gt i started have problems with it locking on with stock brand new phone. have a new one now and it started doing the same crap again i'm using the fb21 before the fb17/15 and the same thing. i have learn to just do the quck fix and live with it until theres a permanent fix for this problem.
I have my E4GT flashed onto Boost mobile. The GPS has NEVER worked. When I try to update my profiles, I get an Error saying "Error: Client Authentication Error"
So, I assume it's because I'm on Boost.
Anyone know of a way to update my stuff? Maybe get this GPS working?

Not to burst your bubble, but people that have GPS issues almost always try to update their profile and or restart the phone. That's kinda basic I would think. Typically the issues are with the radio like people pointed or the drivers if flashing different ROMs. THis used to be a huge issue on CM7 back on EVO I remember.

Even though you are on Boost, the software and qpst for the E4GT is still set for Sprint. You have only manually changed the important parts to connect to the network.
You cannot update Sprint profile and PRL through the phone for boost. The way to "update your profile" would be to reset the APN settings and re-provision the device.
Running fb21 with little issue with GPS, no stupid fixes, it just worked. Un like other updates....just saying.

wow back to the same crap again with the new e4gt this is frustrating i thought a new phone later it will work but still the same crap. does anyone know pf a better fix than this before i go hostile on sprint. they still try to tell me its the area i live in. i just lost my evo 3d thats why i got this phone and never had one problem at all.
I no that i am not the only person who has this issue and it is driving me up the wall. for some reason when i loose signal alltogether it wont auto recontect when i come into signal again instead i have to force it to reconect.
At first i put up with this becasue i loved the phone and i thought that three would be doing somthing about it to fix the problem. but as i have recieved no fix i am getting more and more tiered with the phone and im swaying more and more towards the S3.
The only way that i can hold a signal is if i set it so that i am on 3g only which helps but suks becasue there are alot of ares which dont have the 3g signal.
i have also noticed that the phone looses signal when i put it in my pocket so if somone is trying to contact me while i am not actually using my phone its like i might aswell not even own it.
This signal issue is pretty much rendering my phone usless does anyone know of any fixes that i can posibly do i have not applyed any OTAs directly from three but i have unlocked my phne with HTC DEV and have installed the latest stock roms to try and sort it out with the latest euopean radio to no provail.
does anyone have any sugestions for me? a posible fix? news from three or should i just give up on the HOX and switch phones altogether.
Same issue here dude, minus losing signal in my pocket. Also, I have to use the airplane mode and not toggle the network connection to get it to work

There is a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613521 and basically if you dial *#*#4636#*#* choose phone information and change set preferred network type to WCDMA only the problem is solved - for me anyway but only until restart as the setting is reset.

You can make the setting permanent by instead going to "Mobile Network" in Settings, then "Network Mode" and select WCDMA Only. That sticks across reboots.

it has been 2 months though and it still hasnt been fixed HTC are taking the piss with this
Also another thing I have noticed is the signal is slightly worse in a case than without.... So mine at work can be hit and miss even more. I am on Three to with the Three firmware.
It has actually been better since I got it back from HTC repair. They seemed to have changed the whole housing and battery in the report for the squeaking and moving lcd screen. Maybe they have done a better job at putting it together than from Taiwan?
Although I didnt have this exact problem with my HOX from Three…. (just had crap signal, would re-connect OK though, but was hard to get from 3g to 2g and back again sometimes) mine just had poor signal everywhere…. so much so, I cancelled the contract. Cost me £500 to get out of it…. but well worth it TBH.
S
I purchased my one x from amazon and got three to swap my sim from my desire to a micro sim. I only get loose network when im at home.
I reported the network drop to them and they got back in touch. They said that there was not a problem with my phone its just the location of my house and the distance away from the mast. After someone from the network team called me they said that we can offer you a "home hub" (for free) which connects to my home router which provides signal in my house. There is always a catch with companies. They wanted me to renew my contract as i have 2 month left. I am not going to renew as i can find cheaper sim only deals.
I guess what im trying to say is that if you have a long contract left with three file a fault online and push for the home hub.
There is no harm in asking.

I have the same problem with Three and at first I was just like ahh I can live with that.
Now its really starting to annoy me no signal indoors what so ever and when I leave the house will not auto connect I have to enter and exit airplane mode for it to pick up a signal again, Ive sent in a complaint will see if they get back to me.
Just a heads up the signal not reconnecting seems fixed in the latest system, custom ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601543

Hi all, I posted in the CM10 support thread, but this issue doesn't seem to be well known so I'm raising it in its own thread.
I'm not having much luck with my newly-purchased Defy+. The factory firmware suffered random reboots, which is pretty well documented. I installed the latest CM10-20121018-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip, and the random reboots have stopped. However I now get occasional dropouts of phone and 3G service.
Usually, I find out when either I try to use data and even though the 3G icon suggests a connection, no data is transferred. Then the phone app hangs when I try to make a call. If people call me, they *do* get a ringtone, but my phone doesn't make any sound or visual feedback that there's a call coming in. Aircraft mode doesn't rescue the situation, I have to reboot the phone to get it to work.
Hope someone can help - I came from a rock-solid CM7 / HTC Desire HD setup, and this is doing my head in. Am happy to provide any more debug information as required.
NB I see from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31440310&postcount=321 that there is a known 3G data dropout bug on these phones, but that's not what I see - I can't make phone calls either. Plus my ROM has that fix in.
I have installed Connection Checker which will hopefully give me details of if there's any pattern to the problematic behaviour. Look forward to any feedback, thanks in advance.

Change baseband. I had the same problem. It's solved changing the baseband.
Mine was Europe\central Europe\3.4.x or 3.4.2-145 changing to 2.21 no problem at all.

Thanks for the response, it's interesting and heartening. I can't find a factory SBF so I can't take it back to the shop.
FWIW, I find the baseband screen confusing. My service provider is Golan Telecom. They have a UMTS 2100MHz network, and rely on roaming with another local provider - Cellcom for GSM 900/1800 and UMTS 850/2100.
I think I understand the frequencies but not what the 2.21 etc means.
As I type this, the phone has been on 2.21 for 20 minutes, and is now exhibiting the problem again.
I am now trying Asia / China 0.26/1.10 which has frequencies 850/2100 MHz. If for no other reason than Israel isn't listed in the list. However, that didn't work for long, if at all. I'm absolutely hating this.
Can you or anyone add to this by suggesting how I might choose the right baseband out of the options given?
Try one by one according to your location.

Well, my location (Israel) isn't in the list. I've tried many settings, with varying results, but not one has been able to avoid this problem where the phone (app as in the actual telephone) just hangs and I lose voice and data. I can keep going, but I don't understand why one would magically work. I think 900/2100 should work with my SP, and I don't understand the differences between the myriad of options that still result in the same frequencies. Have I missed something?
Is there anything else worth trying? I have heard that sometimes it can be a SIM problem, but my SIM isn't even a year old.
I think I have a fix, due to great work by coas (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31025913&postcount=34).
My carrier (Golan Telecom) has a national roaming agreement with Cellcom. It seems that flashing the Cellcom radio for the Defy Plus has fixed the issue. It's been up for four hours now, which is four times as long as before.
I guess the issue is that flashing the SBF to root the Defy Plus, messed up the radio in some way, but I don't really understand the whole radio issue, and what is different in radios from different carriers' firmware. I thought GSM was GSM and UMTS was UMTS. Anyway it seems to be working so I'm not complaining.
Just wanted to put this here for the benefit of anyone else who might be having the same issue.
Sadly, it was a short-lived "fix". Still unreliable, just not quite as bad. I'm going to try the Orange (Partner) radio .sbf which coas tells me is updated, and if not, then return it to factory firmware and take it back to the shop.

If you are willing to stick with a Custom ROM, you can try a different setting on the CPU Settings.
Not a long time ago, I had similar problems and solved it enabling "load all modules" and "conservative" settings in the custom recovery.
Good Luck and let me know if it worked for you.
Hi, thanks for the answer. I didn't update the thread, but I can confirm that I took it back to the shop. The guy knew about the problem and replaced the handset, and now it's fine. So it's a hardware issue - he said it happens on around 1 in 5 Defy Pluses.
Hi, I had the very same problem with my defy+, it suffered that issue on CM9 and CM10. I could not resolve it and had to go back to stock, it works fine now.
It seems the problem is more frequent with national roaming in use.
After the replacement, is everything working fine even with CM10?
I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!

In HDR menu there is a LTE only mode..... beware you wont receive calls or texts so if you have google voice set up then perfect
