Windows BSOD while flashing ODIN - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

After spending a couple of days reading up on flashing ROMs on the GS3, and IEMI woes, I finally decided to try it this morning. I was using the "No Tripping" sticky post here and everything was going great until Windows decided to blue screen of death me and rebooted right in the middle of ODIN flashing the phone! My kids were in the room and nearly saw dear old dad throw the laptop across the room. Thankfully the phone stayed in download mode. I left it plugged in to the laptop, booted up (the laptop) and started up ODIN again.... and it was able to start flashing once more and finished this time. So if anyone else gets BSOD while flashing, don't disconnect anything and definitely don't reboot the phone! Common sense probably, but the pucker factor was high at that point.

Lol. The pucker factor. Yeah I've had some Odin flashes fail back on my GS1 that scared me a bit. Just unplugged the phone, rebooted the computer, and went to flash again and all was well.

Yeah I have had my computer fall asleep on me while flashing my gs3 through Odin. Don't worry just flash again.

That is not the answer - flash again
He will have BSOD again!
What kind of advice is that?!!
First - reinstall Windows fresh, probably long due. Then apply all Windows patches.

Except most BSOD aren't even caused by the software it's usually a hardware issue or he needs to update his drivers.

Well, he got it working on 2nd try :good:

Yeah worked fine second time around. As for the BSOD, I'll worry about it if it happens again. No interest in debating windows on an Android forum anyway

BSoD Multiple times while in Odin
I've had my laptop BSoD on me about 4 times after clicking start while in Odin. My VZW SGS3 is in Odin mode and waiting to receive the download. After I click start, my laptop freezes up and BSoDs on me every time. Any advice?
Yes I downloaded the drivers from Samsung and I'm trying to do the Stock Root, not flashing any custom firmware.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't mean to necrobump. Didn't realize it had been July since someone posted.

Hmm I wonder how many people have gotten a bsod with those drivers. I downloaded the ones off xda and not from Samsung. I didnt crash during odin, but I did a day later and saw in event logs the cause was those drivers. It had caused quite a few critical errors as well before it crashed. I removed them and 2 weeks have gone by and everything is working fine again.

I would recommend drivers from Samsung. Just saying...
And sometimes it helps to run Odin as administrator.

I always run as admin. I've got a 7 year old Toshiba that is still going strong. When I had the BSoD while flashing my Skyrocket, it was due to the fans being clogged up, and letting the old gURL get all hot n bothered. Gave her a quick blow, and all was good to go.

[Q] Horray! I bricked my epic...

Ok, so like...two days ago, I followed qbkings video on how to root & clockworkmod an epic with EI22, well it worked. I got recovery working A ok and played around with some roms and stuff. They all worked for the most part, but after rebooting my phone, the SAMSUNG loading screen wouldnt fade away, realizing it had been soft bricked. I tried recoveries but they didnt work. tried tutorial after tutorial after tutoria, but no luck. When trying the Odin unroot method It'd always be stuck on like a factory. file, and keep getting the phone - ! - computer error afterwards. Ive tried looking around the forums and such, but no go. I really need help with this.
You didn't look to hard. There have been 5 threads like this in the last 2 weeks. Go to the stickies, top of development and follow post 1 of How to restore a semi-bricked Epic.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Uh yeah, that was one of the first posts I tried. Never worked for me. Followed exactly step by step and repeated the process five times, but ive been constantly getting stuck on factoryfs.rfs
oh ****, now it wont even turn on. tried charger usb, nothing! no indicator or anything. damn. am I screwed?
I think you were better off leaving your phone alone. If following instructions is difficult, than that should have been your first clue. Id post a link to help you, but you have already read and tried it, and even that didn't work........time for you to buy an iphone I guess.
Sent from cyandroid
Try pulling the battery and sd card, let sit for an hour with usb unplugged, then connect to usb cable with odin running and try to boot into download mode.
If it goes, pop the battery in and load up ei22 or another odinable tar along with the recovery in qbkings videos. Make sure only reboot is checked in odin.
If not, go back and try every step in the sticky. I doubt that you have a problem that has not been experienced already.
Sent by my CleanGB Epic using XDA App
So you tried buying and using a better cable? And tried with both the battery and sd card out using only the computer as a power source like the thread in Development said to do?

Sometimes the truth hurts.
I tend to agree with that sentiment, nothing against you OP, but there are some that gravitate to technology and feel at home, and then there are some that gravitate and lack the necessary skills for something like this.
This is a very straight-forward task, especially with all of qbking's hard work in making those very easy to follow videos, and other's time typing out tutorials, so I really fail to see how most have so much trouble making it work. Maybe they belong in the latter analysis.

We all started somewhere on this, and I bet most people didn't have success right away. I know I didn't on either platform I've worked on. I'm just sick of the n00b flaming around here. These people might be the ones who's roms or kernels you running in a year. Just show some respect.

Youll have to find one of them jigs to get you back into download mode I assume usually time heals all mistakes though if your inpatient id look up how to make an odin(download) reset jig ( I think its called that). I think there a thread about that lying around here somewhere...

Yeah, not trying to knock on you too hard, but qbkings videos should be all you need for successfully rooting and flashing. He works hard on them and is very clear with instructions.

Yup, Ive tried different cables, ports, no battery, battery but got nothing. I thoroughly read through the entire post and tried what was suggested and got nothing. Phone wont turn on or do anything. I'm thinking that i'm screwed. I have been thinking about getting a replacement epic for a while, cause some time ago I actually accidentally dropped it from my desk and this happened to it http://imgur.com/ZBlNn still worked fine, so I didn't really bother thinking about replacing it, but now I'm guessing that I have to. If I do end up requesting for a replacement, any tips/fore warnings about what I should say when I talk to the guys over at sprint before i end up mumbling like an idiot.

With the soft brick you might have been able to save it. It happened to my brothers phone and what I did to fix it was wipe everything, factory reset
Then flash stock rom. Wipe everything again
Then flash stock kernel
Wipe everything again
Then it was perfect.
If you had already been flashing roms.and such then your problem wasn't following directions.
You just might have flashed a rom without a supported kernal. Causing bootloop
As far as where you are now.. maybe tell then you dropped it and it never turned back on?
I don't think they can ever find out you rooted it if it never turns on again lol

Don't use the broken screen as the reason or they will charge you around $100. Just try and make sure you get across the point that its the faulty phone (even if it isn't) and make sure you have an accurate believable story on how it got bricked. If you mention anything about messing with root or anything similar they won't replace it.
True. But on another note you can't say much. Only other thing I can think of is saying maybe you tried updating the device and it died

Did you try the mythological magic button? The pin hole behind the cover next to the camera lens?

[Q] Bricked... but maybe a way out?

so I was on vacation in europe and my wifi wouldn't connect, so I flashed CM9 as on a whim and the wifi worked great (for google voice wifi calling). The phone was acting wacky so I went into recovery to wipe cache and I accidentally did a full wipe (I blame the jet lag) using the included recovery and rebooted..and my phone was bricked. no samsung screen, no download mode, just solid blue light.
here's my question...
I read in another post that you can try holding the vol down and power until the blue light does the single blink and see if odin recognizes it and trying oding el29. I'm at work, so before I drive all the way home to try it, is there any truth to this idea or should I just wait patiently for my replacement phone?
thanks in advance
I have heard it doesn't work for a full brick, which it sounds like you have. Wouldn't hurt to try though. Usually if you can't access the download screen you're done.

I know. and I knew immediately what I did. Not my first brick, lol. having TEP removes all safety protocols I should take when flashing, which I do about 10 times a week
but seeing that post gave me a glimmer of hope that I won't have to keep using my old blackberry until my replacement comes
You'll probably be able to get into ODIN D/L mode and flash everything but your /data partition. The problem is that usually when people do what you did, their /data partition memory gets corrupted in hardware, so you can try, but be prepared to get a replacement.
Oh no Wiz. Weren't you one of the early bricks from CWM Touch? I'm afraid sfhub is probably right. Getting Odin to connect is actually the easy part in these cases. Getting through data.img successfully is another story. Sorry man.
Sounds like you'll be stuck at data.img if you get into Odin. Best of luck though.

I actually never had a problem with the cwm touch, lol. my first brick was when I tripped over my usb cable while using odin XD
after that I got a usb jig... which I recommend EVERYBODY get. It's saved me from that fate at least 3x already.
but it didn't help now
didn't work. odin wouldn't recognize it
guess I'm stuck waiting for my replacement to come in..
I hate using this stupid blackberry

Bricked?

So yesterday I was going to switch from PA to BeanStalk and ran into some problems, i restored back to PA.
Last night I went and downloaded LiquidSmooth I believe it is, went into recovery *cwm 6.0.2.7.* wiped data, cache, dalvik and formated system.. Installing the zip I ran into a status 7 error. I went to restore my nandroid from earlier in the day, my stable PA setup. No restore files could be found, internal, or external.
At this point I powered my phone off so take my micro sdcard out so I could download a rom through my laptop. While the rom was downloading I decided to go back to recovery to see if there was anything I was doing wrong there..I couldnt get to recovery. I couldnt get into download mode.. Plugging it in to the wall charger I wasnt even getting a charging light. I let it sit overnight on the charger and decided to start on it this morning..
Any button combo I do yields no result.. So I'm fearing this may be a toasted device.. If anyone has insight please let me know.. Much thanks..
plugging my phone into usb cable to laptop, driver goes to install: 'qhsusb_dload no driver found
looking this up in google just re-enforces my suspicions..
yeah dude your phone is now a doorstop. this happened to me once as a noob android "modder" as i was trying to install an rom made for the international version of the gs3 (i9300) onto my north american at&t gs3

BeanStalk 4.3 was yesterday morning. I had a hard time getting it to boot back up after wiping cache n dalvik. It was really unresponsive, holding buttons and releasing took forever to yield a result. So there was alot of battery pulling and buttons. I got pissed and just said **** it and left it alone and it booted up, I booted to recovery and switch back the Paranoid Android. There was a small handful of people in the thread all kinda saying the same thing, long delays and unresponsive..
My PA setup was stable, I've had it on for months.. I was in a flash kinda mood so I decided to try a different rom, something not 4.3 based.. So I downloaded the LiquidSmooth rom but it error'd during installing.. I wasnt able to restore, And when I shut it down it just seems I couldnt get it back up to do anything..
It could be a combination of events.. Just a minor bump in the road.. Not the first phone I had brick..
Eh.. Guess I get a new phone..

I got a laugh out of that, but I'm sure its true. With the amount of phones on the market, I'd love to know the percentage they take back in and replace.. It's gotta be astounding.. It's a small thorn in my side for a day and a half, but my phone should be here before noon. I just gotta go and find my rootkit folder and get it all ready
This is the 2nd phone I've wound up bricking. I didnt get my first true smart phone till October 3yrs ago. HTC droid incredible.. that phone was seriously tuffer then nails.. It was dropped so many times, i just stopped caring if it fell cause i knew it would be ok.. Went down a flight of wood steps into my basement during a call and didnt blink.. I wound up melting the back cover to the battery once, my daughters * i have twins* were destroying something and I had torch on looking for something. I wound up putting the phone down on a towel w/ torch on facedown.. I got busy cleaning what they messed up and by the time I remembered my phone I went to get it and it shut down as I picked it up.. It was extremely hot and around the LED you could see a ripple from where it melted. I pulled everything apart, let it cool off for like 10minutes and it booted right back up.. It bricked way later on, I was way more flash happy back then, then I am now. I'm pickier now, back then I was just trying anything..
This sII was bought in October of last year. But it's seen its number or battery pulls and restores.. Tomorrow we will follow up the same..

Yeah we've all bricked a device lol, I had a Samsung galaxy precedent that I beat to sh*t, threw, dropped, whatever n it always booted, still to this day actually lol its sitting in a draw somewhere, my daughter plays games on it lol, but yes honestly the amount of s2s that have been refurbished is astounding my buddy is a tech for T-Mobile which is how I know all this but they hardly ever even send u back the same device when u send for repair, just junk it for a new refurb, wipe and restore the broken one and someone else gets it lol, there tough and almost unbrickable but almost is the key word, how u bricked urs though is strange, I've never had it happen like that before, good luck with the new one and switch to twrp, much better recovery for all the new roms out there

I got this phone under the "free" section of craigslist.(lucky me)
this phone was perfect, no cracked screen, no scratches, just a bump in the side. The only major problem was that this phone was hard bricked.
What I did was that I went to ebay, and found a random seller with decent reviews for JTAG service. The whole thing cost about 40 dollars. (since I got the phone free, I would only lose $40 if this was a scam)
This dude was really nice! I got my GS2 back within a week completely fixed. with stock touchwiz loaded and prerooted alerady
new phone arrived a few hours ago. been running some errands and such.. now to root this one.. tmobile picked the tab up on this one..
so i threw cwm recovery on via odin, flashed my superuser zip. it failed a couple times, 3rd time it took.. booted up and titanium couldnt get access.. in the su update fixer its also failing at "gaining root access"..
any idea's?

Got T-mobile Galaxy S2 T-989

Just updated my Evernote and Tumblr apps last night

It is not rooted.
I cannot connect to Kies as it's frozen on startup screen, little man won't even show up to blast off :crying:
I've tried a soft reset - afraid to do a hard reset - don't remember wen I last backed up.
Any suggestions?
Mine is the same too, I let my phone drop and it did the same. However I am rooted. So I don't know if that made a difference or not.

Have you at least tried flashing again with ODIN? I was rooted, however I did a superwipe, then flashed 4.1.2 on again and it worked fine. Hopefully this sticks now.

Bootloop unless connected to charger

i need help! ill donate a little cash to the first person that finds a working solution im absolutely stumped on this. two weeks ago i tried upgrading my rooted sprint note 4 from android 4.4.4 to lollipop and everything seemed to go well until i opened up the camera and i went in to a bootloop. since then it hasn't stopped. i have tried flashing stock tars with odin. ive tried CM roms, noterized rom, tons of roms with custom recovery. ive used windows xp, and windows 7, 2 different computers, different cables, different usb ports. odin with administrator rights. nothing will stick. ive gotten passes and fails with odin. when it passes the phone will work as long as im on a charger after first boot once it comes off the charger it immediately goes in to a bootloop and then will not go past the samsung logo and if it does it reboots at the Spark logo. ive wiped cache 3x and factory reset 3x prior to flashing ive checked threads for the past two weeks and only made this account to ask for help. im not new to rooting and have never encountered and issue like this before. i can get in to download mode and recovery so i still have hope its just beyond my knowledge. occasionally recovery bootloops unless im on a charger as well. can someone PLEASE help me?? its making my stomach sick. my only option for internet is a galaxy s5 i bought with root for hotspot so everything i do takes forever to download. sorry for the legthy post im just trying to be detailed as possible for what ive already tried. like i stated above ive done my research this is my last option. thank you.

i was thinking that as well but with my luck figured that would be too easy of a solution and weird that it decided to go ploop immediately after the flash. i play XBL off my hotspot and it can get rather hot. i usually keep an ice pack with a piece of cloth under it when i run it for an extended period of time though. ill buy a cheap one on ebay as a test. appreciate your input.
