NFC Hack issues - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Android phones hijacked via wallet tech

tiny bit scary

Google will figure a way to stop the vulnerabilty as they have before now that It Is revealed so I'm not scared.

I think that all they have to do is make it so you have to accept the command

You have very little reason to be scared. NFC only works when the Galaxy S3 has its screen on. Unless you like having your screen on while your phone is in your pocket, or your hearing/sense of touch is so poor that you can't hear the sound/vibration that any NFC action makes, you have pretty much nothing to worry about.

Not really, it uses NFC.
You have to be very, very close (1-2 inches) for NFC to work.
He might as well steal your phone if he's that close.

Even that doesn't work. Because NFC is turned off when the screen is off (IIRC).

In which case it goes in the NFC hack thread I think everyone who hacks their phone knows all bets are off.
I'm just saying the circumstances for this hack are very remote on a stock phone.

what about if you have the whole NFC off on your menu settings?. would that be a barrier to hacking?.

NFC uses (or useless)

Anyone use nfc? I still have yet to find a use for it. If you use it then what do you do with it. If you don't then do you feel it is useless?
at least we have it... some dont
Not using it yet.....
Sent from my SecuLAr
Yeah, for now it's pretty useless in the U.S. Other countries are using it though, we have just fallen behind as far as NFC goes.
NFC doesn't seem to work with CM7 on my phone, it just straight doesn't turn on. I haven't seen it in the list of "not working" stuff in the threads, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it yet, so I'm not too worried
I use it, I bought my own programmable tags from tagsfordroid.com , I have one stuck in my car mount so as soon as I put it in the car mount, it goes to driving mode , turns wifi off and bluetooth on ...
I made another so as soon as I get home it is right next to my desk, so it turns wifi on connects , turns bluetooth off .
Yeah these are mundane uses but until we get google wallet or something like it, real world uses are slim to none ...

I've been playing with it also with simple routine stuff like this. As soon as I get more tags i'm going to make some for checkins at my favorite hangouts... etc. But to date the most useful tasks I use NFC are checking the balance on my Clipper Card and Door entry access.
I've been trying the ports of CM7 but as soon as I've checked it out I bounce back to a backup because it won't work under CM7 and I need that door entry access.
Cheers

It's a shame so many people think NFC is "useless" - they don't see the potential it holds. If the iPhone5 comes with NFC I guarantee we'll see real-world adoption very quickly.
I wrote a really big blog post on my personal blog about the potential of NFC.
There's also some great demos showing what it can be used for on this Google I/O talk.
Buy some blank NFC tags and let your imagination guide you.

Worst part is iphone users will act like apple pioneered and invented NFC.
I disagree. I think you will see a lot of the users of older iPhones will upgrade and if NFC is incorporated into the phone those pesky Apple Fanboys you love to deride will be advocates for the cause. The monolithic platform will work in it's favor unlike Android phones that have NFC built in and functional but crippled because the platform is fragmented by the carriers. All those users coming online at once will be what gets us to critical mass... but I doubt they will claim it as an apple discovery.

I disagree. I have an all out apple fanboy at work that swears the drop down notification bar was invented by apple even though it just got implemented in ios5. Swears that apple pioneered 4g. Invented the touchscreen. And a few others.

I don't find it hilarious at all. Once these "rumors" get out people are going to keep spreading them and then when the actual next Nexus and OS is announced people are going to complain that feature x isn't in there when it was supposed to be.

Of course they retracted that story. It made no sense to me. Google wouldn't create a "customization center" for Nexus devices to run a alternate UI. If I was a Googler, I would of been laughing at that too.
rumors are great; i still get the iMorons coming into my store going "hey can you show me the new holographic keyboard on the 5?"

An end to fragmentation, better battery life, widespread adoption of AOSP in high end devices... it all seemed too good to be true.

[Q] Anyone else using NFC tags?

So I got the 10 pack + keychain kit from tagsfordroids.com. So far, the only real uses I have found were one for work and one for home. When I get my Bluetooth carkit thing from Dice Electronics this weekend, I may go ahead and program the keychain as well so the phone will connect to the car and such once I am in it. I am using NFC Task Launcher to program to tags.
I was wondering if anyone else uses NFC tags and for what uses?
I just got a few and do the same. I have one where I come home it turns on certain features, I have one in the car that turns on bluetooth, and one on my keychain that turns off WiFi, BT and a bunch of other stuff to save battery while I'm out. It would be even easier if someone would hack our nfc.apk so the setttings would apply at the lock screen or while screen off.
I use AnyTAG (free market app). It doesn't actually write the NFC tag, just reads the ID number from it (so you can still reuse "locked" tags). Would highly recommend it if you're the only person using your tags.

This was one of the first things I noticed immediately. Yeah, we know it's not much more to unlock the phone first, but would be soooo convenient.
I am moving this from General to Q&A because well, its a question. But I am very interested in how to use these better. It is a function out there for these phone that I think is not tapped enough. Maybe this thread will generate more information on the subject.
Thanks for the move. I struggled with whether is belonged in Q&A or not.
You have to unlock the phone to use them?? From a security standpoint I guess that's good but for convenience it almost makes them pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless. They can be programmed like a batch file, performing multiple tasks, not just a single function, but I agree that being able to do them with the phone locked would be nice.
I suppose though from a security standpoint, it does make more sense, didn't think of potentially harmful NFC uses.
For me its not worth buying tags for something I can just take a couple seconds to do or automate with tasker.

...? Where did you see that? And can it be done on a stock SG3 (not rooted or anything...)?
FWIW, here is a small 8 min video I just saw when I was looking for something else about some of the functions of NFC. He is using the same NFC launcher app that you are using as well. But also talks about how some Samsung NFC tags won't work with Nexus 4 but do obviously with GNex.
It is from Gigaom, off the Reuters news site.
http://www.reuters.com/video/2012/1...-phone-an?videoId=239430247&videoChannel=3400
Can't watch it while at work so I will check it later, but I have heard of some tags having weird incompatibilities and such. Every now and then, when formatting a tag or programming, I will get the weird error about the tag's memory being too small. Not sure if thats what the video is getting at, but I will check it when I get home.

I got a set but I've only played with them. It's a neat novelty but at the cost not really practical. If they were cents each rather than dollars I might use them more.
Just register your phone on Samsung.com and you'll get a 50% off coupon...buy your TecTiles with that. I have mine by the door to toggle WiFi, in the bathroom to launch Play Music, and by the toilet to launch YouTube.
I use mine a lot, but my only gripe is that the phone has to be on and unlocked in order for it to work...but its better than nothing I guess.
I have thought about putting one in the living room for guests to use to connect to WiFi without asking for the password.

Not ubiquitous because people like you keep saying it isn't. Buy it, try it out...you may find something interesting that will intrigue another to do the same. My local mall uses NFC to give out free songs or magazine articles. What's a couple of bucks gonna hurt? You already bought a $300+ phone...might as well use its features.

believe me, I wish I could think of uses for them that would do something I thought was functional, because gawdamn, the idea is cool. and I do love anything new tech-wise. i'm always an early adopter.
(and I bought the phone outright. $700 bucks w/ tax. worth every damn penny.)
so far, the only implementation I am seeing make NFC worthwhile is sBeam/filesharing, and google wallet (if it worked right now).
I will be keeping a watch on the tech, and I tend to make frivolous purchases (like the AllShare TV dongle), and perhaps I'll keep an eye on you, see if you come up with anything that sparks some ideas.
Anything useful for my personal routine (turning off ringer at work etc.) I have set up in tasker. For little stuff like opening you tube while on toilet, (lol) it just doesnt seem more convienent to tap phone to a tag than to click the app on my homescreen. Tasker really does all of the automation for me for work, my car etc.

yes, just set it up to Toggle the bluetooth - that way if it's on it will turn off and visa versa.
I have similar setups and it works like a charm.
and the tiles will work with Every phone that has NFC, so even when you get a future phone, the tiles will continue to work. I think they are the bees knees.
they become more useful once you mod the phone to work with nfc screen off (someone posted a mod but it only works from lockscreen not screen off hopefully that will be fixed soon)
I have one each on my washer and dryer. they set a "timer" that goes off and tells me when the washer and dryer are done (30 minutes for washer 70minutes for dryer)
I have one on my car to auto set my car locator position one the dev for car locator gets that working right.
I also plan to use them for geo caching. I hope geocaching.com integrates NFC functionality into their service soon is VERY ideal for that.
I also plan to use them on "bins" in storage. I store what is in the bin in the tag. tap and now I know whats inside (working on that soon)
you can use QR codes but they are a pain (have to load an app) and then wait for camera to focus AND they don't like low light. NFC don't care tap done.
also plan to put on on my Radio Transmitter for my competition rocket gliders. tap and 15minute countdown timer starts.

NFC Ring - anyone got one?

I've been waiting so long for the NFC Rings to go on sale and now you can pre-order them: http://store.nfcring.com/
Anyone got one already, from the Kickstarter batch? Is it easy to use/worth getting, or is it just fiddly and a pain in the backside?
EDIT: Oh yeah, does it work through a case? I have Diztronic TPU case. If it don't work through that then I won't be interested.
Wow that's a pretty cool idea. I'd imagine it would work through a case. I use android beam between my phone and tablet and they both have cases on them.

I think it's a great idea! It's like 2-factor authentication. Just tap the back of your phone. NFC draws VERY little power when on. I wonder if it could power on the phone as well as unlock it in one fell swoop. That would be even better.

The screen does have to be on and device unlocked for NFC to be used. It's a security thing. There are custom Kernels that allow NFC to be used without unlocking the device. Don't remember if it allowed use with screen off.
I have my current ROM (Mahdi-ROM) set to power on the screen when I take it out of my pocket anyway, so that wouldn't really be a problem for me.

Motion sensor I assume. It freaked me out the first few times it happened because I didn't know it was an option in the ROM, and I thought my phone had been awake in my pocket. But upon digging through the settings, there is one under Lockscreen > Lockscreen Notifications called Pocket Mode You can set it to always wake the screen whenever you take it out of your pocket, or only wake if there are new notifications. Also it goes back to sleep when you put it in your pocket again. It's pretty dope.

The screen does have to be on and device unlocked for NFC to be used. It's a security thing. There are custom Kernels that allow NFC to be used without unlocking the device. Don't remember if it allowed use with screen off.

Using NFC LockScreenOff Enabler and Omni ROM. Using NFC tags to unlock my device even when the phone is locked and in standby mode (screen is off).

Are you using the xposed module or is it baked into the rom?
Hey guys, I'm the creator of the NFC Ring, thought I'd just jump on to say thanks for all the comments.
I'd agree with most of your points, you wil find your own use for your NFC Ring, it might not be unlocking your phone for example.. We actually provide all of our source code on github so you can build your own apps on the back of the NFC Ring..
We don't want to box people into specific use cases, we just provide a few example ones to get hackers started with the possibilities.
Just to answer some criticisms directly:
1) It's just two NFC tags on a ring. Pretty much but the amount of R&D that goes into doing that well is actually a lot, RFID and metal don't play well together and we have to build our own antennas specifically for this use case.
2) RE Derek's video, yea he had an initial poor first experience, we ship both a classic and alpha size ring, the alphas sweet spot is larger which makes it more useful for when you can't see the phones sweet spot. After conversations with Derek (read the comments) he does mention he didn't spend any time with the ring before doing a demo and we do encourage people to get used to using the ring. It takes a few days but this is new technology so there is an inherent learning curve..
Overall I'm really proud of what we made with the NFC Ring, it's been a lot of work and we have been completely open about everything and shared everything from day one. We're shipping another 1,000 rings tomorrow and I'm really excited to see what folks hack together. Our job now is to support anyone who wants to build something with their ring, whatever that may be..
If you do wanna engage with the NFC Ring community perhaps nudge some of the community members to jump over here and share their thoughts
We're still a small community but our goals are big Why would you want to keep those pesky unsecure keys that scratch your phone?! That's really what we're at war with..
Thanks again guys, every bit of support really helps and even if we're not the company that provides your NFC Ring I hope we were the ones to at least kickstart things in the right direction with sharing and open-source at the core.
