Whats a galaxy s3 worth with a bad esn? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Reason im asking is i met a guy today to check out a white s3 and he was straight up in his craigslist ad and said it had a bad esn. He bought it off CL and got burned. He was asking $300. The reason im considering it is bc my daughter has a galaxy player 4.0 and wants a 5.0. There $220 new. A girl in her summer camp mother offered her $160 for it plus she has $100 left from her bday. Do you think its worth it if i sell her galaxy player and giver $40 more bucks for the s3? I have a blue my gf has a white one and shes always playin on my gfs phone wants one bad lol
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Yeah, if you pay the $40 more for your daughter, you can get the S3 which has much more features. I think it's a good deal.

use cmda workshop to change the ESN to a valid one than activated. Plain and simply. I have done many of them.

I think im a get the s3.....i think she mainly wants it bc i have an extra pink ballistic maxx and she wants the case bad lol. Worst case scenario bad esn ones go for $350 ebay

NOTE - This is illegal in the US

Bad esn usually means stolen. You want to get your daughter a stolen phone? BTW, cloning ESNs isn't like rooting or flashing roms. It's seriously frowned upon, sleazy, and illegal.

Even though it probably was stolen, you're still legally (and questionably ethically) covered if the guy says in writing that he legitimately bought it off someone else on craigslist and got scammed with a bad ESN.
You could just pull a GGG move and buy the stolen phone for $300, try to find the original owner, and give it back to him/her for free.

Bad ESN can also occur in the following scenario:
1) The motherboard is replaced, the ESN is not in Sprint's database yet.
2) Former owner decides to cancel contract or not pay their bill.
ESN cloning for the purposes of fraud is definitely illegal. ESN cloning a donor phone so that you can use a phone that you can't normally use w/ other providers is somewhat questionable and debatable.

Agreed Speaking of ESN changing, Is it really that easy to change the GS3's ESN? through DFS/cdma workshop? The radio isn't locked?

To unlock the radio you just have to open up your SGS3 to the motherboard and remove parts 1, 3, and 5 as seen in the diagram below:

I agree but why have a useless phone laying around for. I learn one thing about life, If you don't cheat than you don't win. One day you'll understand.

In Joliet, IN for business and I'm getting between 17 and 20 down and 4 to 6 up. Not bad considering I'm not getting anything in North Dallas where I live even though the Sprint Coverage map has me completely covered in LTE.....Sprint Coverage map sucks to be honest.

Well first off verizon is literally twice as expensive then sprint. So you really screwed the pooch on that. Second is verizon doesnt have WiMax And they use a different CDMA Freq as well. So you could talk and text but you wont have any data. And the other issue your gonna run into to is the 4 major carriers started communicating device IMEI and sprint will lock the device IMEI for non payment so you will have a worthless paperweight.

no reason why you can't use it on verizon... just won't have lte. 3g should work fine.
use the same method people are using to flash to boost etc.

I think everyone is missing something here... Yes you can flash the ET4G to work on Boost or Cricket, there are plenty of threads on how to do it.
But as the OP posted... He owes Sprint $1400 dollars!!!
I'm betting his ESN has been locked by Sprint already. If I'm not wrong that would pretty much render his device and any other device connected to that account unless.
Best bet may be to put your device on Craigslist as a parts phone and use the cash to get something on Cricket or Boost. They've been releasing so ok devices lately.

Sigh please don't post if you don't know what you are talking about..
This device CAN be flashed to Verizon or almost any other CDMA a carrier, even if the esn has been disabled by sprint. If he does want to flash it to Verizon it would be very easy to get 3g working. Just need to pull the AAA key from the donor phone.
I personally would suggest flashing to boost mobile or if you want to be on Verizon's network and you use 1gb of data or less a month I would flash it to page plus $50 plan (pre paid on Verizon network). For what ever carrier you choose you will need to buy a phone and activate it to use it as a donor phone.

Boost doesn't require all that.... just persistence. I've done it on sprint branded phones myself with no problem. You wont have wimax service though. Just keep calling back and ask them to activate your phone. They're on the same sprint network anyways. The statement earlier about Verizon using a different cdma band is wrong, Verizon uses the same bands for cdma as sprint so voice and 3g will work fine (who do you think we roam on anyways?) but the lte bands are different even if you had sprint lte phone (which you don't). The only way to get a sprint phone on Verizon is quite illegal and requires a donor phone. But their service is way higher ... your best bet is to just go with boost so you can keep your existing device, have cheaper service, and not break the law.
Ive actually talked to sprint about selling my phone to a friend or giving it to a family member , i asked them about the esn number and they said that it can be used, i didnt ask the proceedure.
but well were basically going to have to use the droid bionic pro for a bit till samsung comes out with a good phone on verizon until i can get this mess straight with sprint.
I do like the idea of using boost or virgin

I do not get all of the Verizon hate, it isn't all that much more expensive anymore than Sprint. The only thing Sprint has going for it right now is Unlimited Data. Unlimited Mobile to Mobile is already offered by other carriers. And with the whole Unlimited Data at dialup speeds over 3G? .
Yea, Verizon does try to charge you for retarded things, but so does Sprint! Half the reps at Sprint do not explain fees associated with upgrading/new line of service, so unless you know your stuff... you may get shafted too. Not to mention, did we forget about Premier Fiasco? Or BTA fiasco? Or yearly upgrades? Or Upgrade fees going up big time? Or TEP going up on newer phones? Or how Wimax was an empty promise? Or how LTE is only going to be in select markets in 2012-2013? Or other major issues they've been having lately?

Anybody else here STILL think its a ripoff paying a little more outright at BEST BUY for a brand new phone with their $10/mo protection plans with no questions asked, NO deductible, Unlimited replacements (within 2 week periods)???
Sprint can stick it.
Best buy protection is the best service I have ever had. Always got a replacement, for water damage, smashed screen, stolen, bricked, they even offer loaner phones until your replacement comes in.
This is the reason I never have an intrusive screen protector on, or sport a bulky ugly case that can never slide out of your pocket just right.
It doesn't cover stolen or lost but I have to agree it is one of the better ones, I have it myself. I paid for it for 2 years up front

I have worked for a Sprint Retailer for over a year now and still this the TEP is a bit off.
If your prone to normal wear and tear and cracked screens Best Buy's is much better. If your prone to losing it constantly, (no more than 3 times in 12 months however) then TEP works.
It's just another way to make a few bucks. What's horrible is without the TEP insurance, if a speaker blows or something your looking at $35 for repair
My only question is...will this count as a material change in T&C for our phone? I'm looking for an easy upgrade and have been waiting for Sprint to change the contract (they always do).

It won't count as the T&C hole applies to your wireless contract.
TEP is an add on so doesn't apply towards that.
(Already checked)
No questions asked doesn't exist at best buy. I bought a transformer prime from them. The prime has had a number of confirmed quality control issues and I had to exchange it twice until I got one that works. After the second exchange, they told me I wouldn't be able to return or exchange anything from them for 90 days, even if defective. I told them to keep the prime, got my money back, and haven't stepped foot in their stores since. I used to spend thousands of dollars a year there. No wonder they are going out of business.

Not true. They don't charge for warranty. If you want expedited warranty service, you have to pay the $35, otherwise it takes 1-2 weeks to get replaced. If you play your cards right, you can get the $35 fee waived.

Not false, sprint does not charge for warranty replacements. It would be illegal to do so. They provide a service for $35. If you object to the $35, they handle the warranty through the manufacturer which takes more time. However, if you threaten to cancel, they almost always waive the fee. This is probably just a case of you being an uninformed lower level employee.

I have always preferred best buy myself too. It seems that they are always willing to do what is right for the customer and I have never had any issues...
I read somewhere that someone had a bad experience. Don't let that experience ruin it for you... Could have been an employee with a hair up their ass that day and was taking it out on you... ALWAYS confirm things with another employee, customer, or even go to another store. I won't hesitate to drive to any of the three around here to confirm something or to grab something that wasn't in stock at the other store.... Worked for me so far! Otherwise, there's always the sprint store

I switched to best buy when I got my gsII.. I haven't had to use it but they just seemed way more pleasant to deal with than my local sprint store, and obviously like everyone else said the sprint plan is better if you're prone to losing/getting your phone stolen. Personally as long as best buy isn't going out of business and time soon I will buy my phone from and use best buy insurance. Just a personal preference.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Save your money. Equipment protection is a rip off. The phones have a one year warranty. Keep an old phone that you can port to for a couple of weeks while you send it out to the mfg if you can't afford the $35 for repair service. But if you pay 15/mo for 2 years + $100.00 deductible, you end up paying $460.00. Sounds like a huge waste of money to me when you can buy a new phone outright that is an older model for like $200.
Best buy protection used to be even better. I used it to pull off 2 upgrades with no cost to me. They have since changed it.
Before i took my evo in with a spider web for a screen. They sent it off, and a month later they said they were just going to give me a new phone. I got a gift card for $649 and they let me change phones.
Now, they only do rapid exchange with a referb. I had bby btp on everyone until this phone, because i got it in Amazon on black Friday for $.01.
And best buy does NOT cover lost or stolen, only sprint does.

[Q] Bought a Galaxy SIII , turns out the ESN is bad..What to do?

Hi guys, seems being on AT&T made me too comfortable with SIM swapping being so easy and I bought a S-III off craigslist that turned out to be on MetroPCS's bad esn list. I have done tons of research on the seller, his full name, he's a student at a local college and his phone#, etc and I have the text messages and ad. He won't return my calls or texts and now I'm not sure what to do. With all that info is there anyone that has actually gotten their money back if reported to the police? I'm not sure if the phone was his and he reported it stolen or if it was someone elses? Any insight would be greatly appreciated

I'm sorry that you bought a stolen phone. I think your luck in going to the police is fairly slim, but it's worth a shot. It kind of depends on how bored your local PD department is. This seller most-likely used a fake name and a google voice number to call/text and dumped it after scamming you.
I've found a number of threads that had had the exact same issue that you have.

Link 3 (This one gets a bit personal, haha)
There are genuine people wanting to sell their phones, but a lot more people trying to make a quick buck. Some people will even give you their ESN number so you can call Sprint to see if it's clean. Even this can be scammed, 'cause they can call the second you pay them (before you activate it) and claim their phone is stolen. It seems that the best policy when buying a Sprint phone off of Craigslist is to meet them at the store and get Sprint to activate it on your account before you pay a cent to the seller.
Unfortunately, unless you want to round up a posse and deal some vigilante justice to this punk selling stolen phones, you might be out a couple of bucks on this one. I'm sorry this is how it turned out for you.

Thanks..I was just wondering if anyone who went through the trouble of involving the police ever got their money back...since I have all information including his name and his address. I'll just go ahead with the ebay auction as parts or flashable to try and recoup my money...and make his life a little miserable as well.

Wait...you have his name AND address? set up camp on his doorstep.
ha! I dont have a lot of patience, I'll end up doing bodily harm to this young man. But yes, I have so much info on him since he called me from his real phone# and he has had an online presence including being a student at Georgia State University. I just dont wanna waste my time going to the cops if NO ONE has ever gotten their money back in a situation where they involved the cops. I cant use it at all, someone even said the GS3 can't be flashed to another carrier. So...all I can do is part it out or sell to someone and let them do what they want with a "BAD ESN" phone.
Spent hours going through proper channels. Didn't do any good. Cut ur losses or encourage this person to return u the money.

Thats why its on ebay now. He won't return calls or answer calls from any number. I even went thru people who were mutual friends on facebook after I tracked him down. Needless to say, he deactivated his account, must have figured that was the only info I tracked down. I think I'll make some flyers and spread them across Georgia State University's campus where he attends school as well

Yeouch. Sorry about the bad luck. I'm assuming you needed the phone fast, or the deal was too good to pass up, for the reason you purchased from Craigslist? Buying on eBay at least affords you buyer protection via eBay and Paypal. I say this as a top rated seller on eBay buying/selling new and used phones and tablets. We're located East of Atlanta, btw.

I actually prefer local sales and got a lot more relaxed when I left Sprint and went to AT&T, because I could just pop the sim in and go from there. Truly wasn't thinking that there could be an issue and the price was about the norm for what everyone else was selling them for Metro..didnt want to have to get one and then get it flashed especially since Metro is saying they are doing flashed phones anymore.
File a police report. Then take that to the university administration. Some U's hold students to a strict code of conduct. Worth a shot.

You can actually take him to civil court and sue him. I've had success with this. Beings he's a college student a judgment could possibly keep him from getting a job because its on his credit report. Worth a shot.

So yeah. After all these years of rooting and flashing I finally made a grave mistake. Flashed the international PA rom instead of the sprint one thinking I was in the sprint forums. I cant turn my phone on. Red LED comes up when its plugged into charger with no battery. I've done lots of research and have pretty much come to the conclusion that I'm screwed. Any last words of hope? I've tried ODIN already but it wont detect my phone... I feel like such an idiot.

It all really depends on who you deal with. My local also let's me bring in busted phones and other electronics and I get credits on my account. Now I don't have the TEP but if I did hard brick my phone than my next step would be Craigslist. People abusing the system does aggravate me BUT when Sprint managers say ANYTHING is covered than I guess its OK to take it in to them. My local also replaces with brand new units, no refurbs till you hit 3 exchanges (which no one should in their right mind). Sorry for the long post but that's my two cents. OP, try a JTAG and if that don't work than tell your local Sprint what happened, don't try to hide it, most of them will work with you. .

TEP covers anything, that's for sure, even if your phone gets stolen. But you should always have to pay the deductible ($150 for our phones) in order to get a new (read: refurbished) phone. I don't know why your Sprint store is saying (and doing) otherwise, but I know that the TEP is through Asurion (I've dealt with them before on my old EVO) and the deductible sucks, but it's there for a reason. I'd wager a guess and say that someone at your local Sprint store is doing something shady with those bricked phones. Probably claiming 15-day returns. Don't know exactly why they'd do that, but there it is...
What others have recommended in the past (even within the last two days), is straight-up fraud: going to Samsung directly and claiming ignorance "my phone wouldn't turn on this morning." Myself (and others) have called this for what it is: defrauding Samsung.
You were told by your Sprint Store that this is ok, so I don't have any qualms with you over that, but I know that the course of action you've described is not sanctioned by Sprint Corporate or by Asurion or Samsung.
Just wanted to give you a reason so many people are crying out "Fraud!"

Its not fraud I've actually asked sprint representatives and they told me as long as we were honest up front it won't matter if its bricked due to rooting as long as we pay the fee to replace it should be ok. Fraud comes in when you lie to them and get a free replacement phone out of them and a deductible that big is for physical damage like a broken screen or something not for a bricked phone.

Oh no please no more discussions on the ideology of what's right and what's wrong. Personally I go with JTAG, repair my brand new device. Not get a refurbished one that you really have no idea what happened to it.

All I was doing was rellaying one message (from Sprint) to you guys. I've never filed a claim and probably never will. Hard bricks are almost always user error based soley on not reading or paying attention. I feel that with user error you should bite the bullet and figure another way vs taking it in to Sprint. I don't have a cooperate store near me, they're all Absolute Wireless so that could have something to do with it. But again, I DO NOT condone fraud nor do I condone the TEP exchange for hard bricks. I especially don't condone filing a warranty exchange by calling Samsung. Again, just telling you what they told me.

The simple answer is NO .... The Blue HTC One is a Best Buy exclusive , and from my understanding Asurion cant get it unless they are replacing a Blue HTC One on their insurance . Easier way is to upgrade through Best Buy and get Best Buys insurance .

Great question!
We try to replace your device with the same device. However, we cannot guarantee color. It is based on availability at the time you file your claim. If your original color is available at the time you file your claim, the original color will be sent. If your original color is not available at the time you are filing your claim, your options will be discussed with you at that time. You can find more information about the coverage we provide by visiting www.phoneclaim.com/verizon. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Thanks!

I beg to differ , I have Best Buy insurance and I can take my phone with a broken screen to any Best Buy and exchange it right there with NO deductable for a Brand New Phone where on asurion I would have to send it in , pay a deductable and get a refurbished phone and thats if they will fix or replace it , I pay $9.99 and you pay $7.99 . But I guess to each his own . Dont get me wrong if asurion was my only option I would have it but honestly the $2.00 is worth it .

The rep is correct.
Geeksquad protection does not cover theft or loss.
Here is the exact wording from their policy:
Exclusions to Coverage.
This Plan does not cover:
Products that have been lost or stolen (this Plan only covers products that are returned to us in their
entirety); cosmetic damage to your product including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic
on parts, that does not otherwise affect its functionality or materially impair your use.

There are more exclusions then the one I posted here, but that is the relevant part regarding theft or loss.

As much as bestbuy sounds nice the theft/lost is a winner here on Asurions side and 2$ cheaper / mo.
I do know the deductible but if I lose it bestbuy will say I am sorry.
One thing I don't like about asurion is youvonly get two claims in a year. After that they cancel your insurance. I ghinkcits not right as I have to pay 99 bucks for a refurbished phone that I hope has been fixed right. I have had asurion for years and had to do a claim because I cracked my bolt screen. Got my replacement and about a few months later it fell and cracked again. If I would of replaced it again I would of lost coverage. All insurances has its ups and downs. I heard squaretrade is a good insurance for phones.

Best buy now has a deductible too, probably losing money on insurance claims.
And why would someone need more than two claims a year?
