Hello Galaxy Nexus Community! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am in the process of dropping the Motorola Triumph and upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus, and I'm quite excited! The Triumph just had too many problems, and I was about to move on to my 4th replacement, so I've decided to sell it and move on! Can't wait for Jelly Bean! And all the ROMs I could ever imagine!

Welcome

You made the right choice.

Funny thing, I bought am International Samsung Galaxy Note a little over a month ago. I just placed my order with Google Play for 2 Galaxy Nexus's (Nexii?) One for me and the gf. I'm going to return the Note -- While I liked the beautiful display and device in general, lack of community support (just seems to be in its infancy), lack of a freaking LED notification light (My old phone before the Note was the Nexus One,) and realizing that all the extra features I thought I was getting weren't really necessary at all persuaded me to swap over.
The S-pen, while I do like it, is certainly unnecessary, and after the novelty wore off, I found myself chewing on it more than using it for anything useful. I guess it was nice if I had sweaty hands lol, but as far as taking notes, or doing anything outside of doodling or showing off, it was pointless. I originally thought I could use it as a super accurate way of hitting buttons (say the full screen button on in-browser flash videos), but I found that I couldn't even hit the buttons in a lot of videos because the S-Pen can't reach the very side of the screen.
So while I wouldn't be disappointed if I was keeping the Note, ultimately I decided that I'd be much happier with Jelly Bean and better community support

[Q] What phone are you upgrading from ?

Since Samsung/google are being total idiots and not announcing any carriers pricing figure Id ask.
So what phone are upgrading from ?
If GN doesnt hit your carrier...what other phone are you looking at ?
Me
Currently: Nexus One
Backup: Amaze 4g (?)
How do you feel about your backup plan opposed to GN ?
I honestly prefer the Amaze shell.(love the white)
But ICS /720p screen / Zero lag camera have me highly interested.
Currently T-mo G2.
I'm waiting for the GN. If it doesn't come unlocked to the US I won't pay that much to import. I can wait my G2 is working perfectly atm.
My last few phone rotations have been Nexus S, MyTough4g-Slide, and Blackberry 9930.
The fact there is no release date for the Galaxy Nexus is making me loopy. I am contemplating buying a new bionic just to hold me over. I feel like every day there is no information, the more time I spend contemplating the Razr. It's making me crazy. It doesn't help that I will be traveling on the 17th as well.
DX2 which I hate, I miss my Nexus devices
Possibly from an iphone 4. Still need to play with it to be convinced.

I am upgrading from a Samsung fascinate on VZW so I WILL be getting the nexus. @NAZology, that would be a huge fail bro as all moto phones are shi**y locked devices. Nexus all the way man, wait for it.

I'm upgrading from an ancient HTC Hero, cause it's just too damn slow to be honest.
I don't really care if my carrier (O2 Germany) gets it, cause I'll be buying it from an online-shop anyway.
For me there are no alternatives to this phone. I don't like Motorola as a brand, never did. And the new HTC Rezound doesn't appeal to me at all. Since the presentation of the new ICS UI, Sense has become kinda pointless, imho.
I'm upgrading from a Sensation 4G. Due to T-Mobile having ongoing data problems in my neighborhood, I am taking my 2 line family plan to Verizon and getting the GNex.
The one negative thing about Verizon is the lack of dual-core LTE-enabled Android phones with a physical keyboard. The physical keyboard is a must for my wife, and I really don't want to get her the Samsung Stratosphere (last year's specs). What to do, what to do.
I'll be moving up from an old Droid Eris. So really looking forward to it!
Nexus one stock. Have a G2 hanging around as well running cm7. If tmobile doesn't officially get it I'll probably import.

Galaxy Nexus in August....

Hey guys,
My contract ends at the end of July. I've already been looking at what device to upgrade to.
I'm seriously considering the Gnex. I won't be able to afford a high-end device like One X or the Galaxy SIII, so I was kinda settling on this, or possibly the One S if it drops in price.
I'm a HTC Sense fanboy, but recently I have began to get annoyed with the way Android works. I'm frustrated that it takes OEMs ages to push out OS updates to their handsets. (E.g, my phone is getting ICS around May/June, by then Jellybean would be announced, making ICS 'old')
So basically I'm think of going the pure Google way.
My simple questions.
1) will the device still be worth it by August?
2) how futureproofed is it? Will it get official upgrades beyond Jellybean?
3) how much can I expect the rough price to be of a Gnex by Summer? (Sim-free)
4) when will Google announce the succesor? (At the jellybean event or around October?)
Thanks for the assistance
EDIT: sorry, this should have gone to the Q&A...! Sorry guys, hope you can still help!

depends on what you consider "worth it". Yes, it will still be just as good of a phone in August (I'll no doubt still be using mine). And especially if you're cost-constrained.

I'd be surprised if we see the next version officially after JB. But we'll see what direction Android goes in. That's a long time in the future.

Again, who knows? Its already in the mid $500's, dipping to mid $400's on deal sites. I expect it to be in the low $400's (if you're talking brand-new SIM free units) if I had to guess. But no one knows. That's at least 4 months from now.
For comparison, look at the GSM Nexus S, which still sells for just shy of $300 unlocked right now coming up on 1.5yrs old.
4) when will Google announce the succesor? (At the jellybean event or around October?)

They announce a Nexus with each launch of Android. Probably again in October/November 2012. We may hear about JB earlier than that, but they launch the Nexus to actually release the new OS version.

Well I know several carriers/retailers in the US are now offering the Nexus free with new 2-year contract, so if you find the same type of deal in the UK then I would say it is definitely worth it.
Edit: Should have read your OP closer. Looks like the sim free Nexus off contract is still around $500 in the UK.

The galaxy nexus is still worth it, and imo the best smartphone you can buy. Although if you can wait 3 months maybe, the next nexus should be releasing November/December and it might be better to use your contract on that phone instead of the $350 current nexus.
Cheers guys! Been leaning towards this as well. The phone is on a 2 year contract, so my worry is, after 2 years, will the phone still get Google support? I mean, how much more can android advance now?
What else are they going to add, which will require more powerful hardware?
The next nexus is likely to be based on The S3, and there doesn't seem to be a huge change In performance.
Hmmm..

If your other choice is the One S, I'd still go for the Gnex. You can be sure that it will be supported longer than the One S.

Well with the Nexus being a 'pure' Google phone I would think it will be supported longer than other devices but the thing to keep in mind is this has been out for 9 months already, so I wouldn't expect much in the official update department come a year or year and a half from now.
To this day there is still no phone available that I would take over my Galaxy Nexus.

Bingo! :good:
First things first
1. Its surely worth it to buy a GN. I played with my friends SIII and it sucks. It looks like a ugly white big egg. My GN performs a lot better than his SIII
2. We will get future android support yes. Imagine that the nexus s has official jellybean support.
3. I bought mine for only $403. Do you know sweet that is for such a beauty of a smartphone
Once you buy a nexus phone you will never go to a non nexus phone again... ( who agrees with me)
Andddd you will get the best custom roms and kernels, because we have the best developers. Also a GREAT community.
But see for yourself

+1000!
I just came off a 2-year Verizon contract with my Droid X, and purchased a Play Store GNex GSM (unlocked) version for $376 or so (with taxes and shipping). I am using a $30/mo. T-Mobile Monthly 4G prepaid plan (100 minutes, unlimited data and texts) SIM card with this phone, but T-Mobile is not in my area, so I mostly roam on AT&T, which is the only local GSM provider (and with whom T-Mobile have a roaming agreement). Read the thread $30/mo. phone plan thread, and learn how you can easily live within the parameters of the TMO plan that I describe. There are lots of folks available to help you with VoIP issues/setup.
I must say that my Droid X was a real workhorse for me, with a very high quality build. Despite the locked bootloader, I ran over 15 different ROMs on it, from Froyo and up to and including multiple Ice Cream Sandwich roms. My wife also had the Droid X, but is very tough on her phones, and burned through 3 of them in 2 years. The GNex is definitely not built as solid as the Droid X, but I baby my electronics and think the GNex will suit me wonderfully. However, my wife just got the SGSIII 2 days ago, and I seriously doubt that it will last 6 months. Talk about a plastic phone! Though the hardware is better, our modded GNex devices will run much better than an unmodded SGSIII. Take the plunge, I don't think you'll regret it!
I won't be able to afford a high-end device like One X or the Galaxy SIII, so I was kinda settling on this

Word of advice -- never use that phrasing when talking talking about your GF/Wife...
I will only ever buy a Google supported phone -- the best hardware in the world is not worth it - if its not supported. Look at how quickly companies turn their back on a device once they have a new model that has as its main selling point the latest version of android.
They are in the business of selling phones, not making geeks happy. And the carriers are in business of milking their customers like a bunch of cows -- so its not their interest either. Folks give google a hard time, but hey -- they are the only company out there that is not trying to screw me while bragging about how awesome they are..
As much as I love my Nexus we are getting VERY close to Q4 and the next Nexus could be coming by November. If you can, stick it out and get that.

Its not worth it to start a 2 year contract with right now. If I were you, I would buy the Gnex from google for $350. And then, sign up for a 2 year deal for an s3. Then promptly sell the unopened s3 for a profit.

Based on all the rave reviews I am seeing on here about everyone loving their GNex; what from a hardware perspective could make it worth waiting for the next Nexus?
I mean obviously there are some things that the GNex is missing that would be nice, HDMI and micro SD are two things that come to mind. It sounds like the GNex has an amazing display and is the ideal size (even though it is pentile), so I suppose there is potential for a slight improvement in that department. I am assuming they would throw a quad core in the next one, but from what I have read, performance is not really an issue with the GNex. I'm just not sure that it would really be worth the wait as I don't think the next one is going to be nearly as big of an upgrade that it was going from the single core smartphones that many of us had before to the GNex.
Another way I look at these types of things is the sooner you upgrade after your contract expires the better b/c then you get the next upgrade that much sooner.

My GF has the Galaxy Nexus, I have HTC. We both went to an outdoor event where it was really dust, the grounds were dirt.
She used her phone all day, I used mine a few times.
By the end of the day, my HTC had dust UNDERNEATH the glass screen! However, her's had no such problems.
My brother says that the high end Samsungs are sealed air-tight.
My next phone will be either the Galaxy S 4 or next gen Nexus. No more HTC for me.
Just get a GN from Play Store for 350$. Next year you will get a great deal on the new GN model, if you want it. I personally don't like to have contracts so I'm sticking with phones purchased directly from Google.

[Q] Buy GN for graduation or wait for next Nexus?

I'm about to graduate and am tired of my LG Thrill. I definitely want a Nexus, but can't decide whether to get the Galaxy Nexus from the Play store for $400 or wait for the next Nexus to be announced. When do you think that will be? I love the GNexus, I just don't want to get buyer's remorse if the next one is announced soon.
The GNEX will be a great phone for a couple of more years. The next Nexus, though, most likely won't be released until the end of this year.

If you can wait another 5 months I would wait if I were you it really depends if you really need a phone right now I got mine cause it barely came out on sprint (2 weeks ago) but if you saved more money and get the next nexus it will be great too
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Nexus CDMA using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I agree, Buy the Galaxy Nexus because it's always possible it will be last Nexus made (Highly unlikely) but still you never know & like the previous poster above said it will last quite awhile and even when the next Nexus comes out you can always sell this one to buy the next and on top of it you will be able to enjoy all the development for the GNexus since even when the next Nexus is released it will take a few months to get all the awesome roms like CM 10 or whatever it will be called.Honestly the Galaxy Nexus is by far my favorite out of all the devices I've owned & I've owned quite a bit including all three Nexus phones,All of the iPhones except the very first & tons of different Android phones,I think you'll be happy owning a GNexus
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
OP, I played this game at this exact time last year....and if I was on Verizon I would have only had a 6-7 month wait. Since I'm on Sprint that's a year wait.
If you want it get it now. There will always be a better phone on the horizon. My old Evo4G is still a hell of a decent phone and does 90% of what most people need perfectly well...and I've been through 6 new phones since then and what do I have to show for it? Marginally better battery life, a bigger screen and it still manages to do the same exact things.
My point? This phone will be highly functional for years and years to come--especially since it will get Google support for roughly 2 years and then the creative devs will cram Android releases into it that nobody thought would ever run on it. If you wait for the best phone ever to be released you will never end up with a new phone.
I'd say buy the Nexus now and sell it when the next Nexus drops and get that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
You can't go wrong with a Galaxy Nexus. It's probably the most well-rounded phone you can buy at the moment: good specs, full U.S. warranty, more "open" than any other phone out there, and not too expensive.
I expect to keep mine for a quite a while
Thanks for all the replies, looks like I'm gettin the Galaxy Nexus XD

Yep. Get the Galaxy Nexus. Next nexus probably a tablet and Gnex is the first to have the on-screen button which looks gorgeous as butterfly! haha.
well, whats the disadvantage of owning all Nexus anyway. Get all the Nexus!! I only miss Nexus One for now, cuz I couldnt find it anywhere even the second one anymore.
Just sold my iphone 4s to buy this phone. Third party android phones were the reason I switched to apple....but that is not a worry with a nexus device, and ICS really took android to the next level.
Before ICS, IOS was arguably better. Now, in my opinion, it is not even close.
I can't say the same thing about tablets, but ICS is the mobile operating system to have on a phone.
Gnex is a great device, get it, enjoy it, love it.

New Android User from iPhone

I'm very pleased with my new Galaxy S3!
Little background about me, I've had Apple products for 10+ years and have had all the iPhone models since original release. From iMac's to Airports and iPods.. I have them all. In love apple you might think. But I am no fan boy.
I have tried the Samsung flagship devices every time they release one. I have had a infuse 4g, and galaxy s2 prior to getting the s3. I've always returned them because it was difficult for me to use and for some reason always had rebooting issues.
I was very excited when I saw galaxy s3 information and released date. I got it the day it came out for at&t.
I did lots of research on vanilla android because I just hated touchwiz so much.
I rooted and installed CWM. And finally I ended up with Cyanogenmod. I'm extremely happy. And I actually like using my phone.
Everything my iPhone did is much easier on this and the screen is close to the iPhone 4s which was important.
Anything I don't like, I can change!
Just thought I'd share with everyone and I will be on here a lot!

Hey, welcome to Android & XDA! I remember when I first picked up an Android device, because T-Mobile was literally trying to shove it down my throat for free, and they finally got me to bite by throwing in a $200 credit on top of it because my contract was ending, even though I had no intentions of leaving, lol! I was fascinated by it immediately and over the next two months I had acquired 3 more Android phones! I wish I would've discovered XDA sooner, I was on these other forums, and I kept hearing ppl mentioning XDA and I finally asked if it was a Rom or something? (Oh Boy did I get flamed for that)
The iphone hacking/jail breaking really doesn't compare to the vast amount of potential that a popular Android handset like the GS3 has. So many tweaks, mods, and choices its difficult to decide what you want sometimes? If you run into anything that leaves you at all unsure, then feel free to PM me, and if I can't provide you with a definitive answer then I'll point you to someone that can. Now I don't know if I was behind the curve at all, but it seemed like a lot to soak in at first for me, and I really hated asking what I thought were stupid questions, but it was how I had to learn sometimes. So if you are looking for anything, have any questions, or just want an opinion, I'll always answer Pm's.
Good luck, have fun, and most of all enjoy the community & your new toy!

Welcome to Android and xda (home)! I used an iPhone for awhile from February til the EVO LTE was released. I noticed a few things about the iPhone that lead me back to Android:
1) I got generally bored with it
2) I found the lack of options/settings annoying as I was unable to set certain personal preferences.
3) Organization of settings and preferences is illogical on the iPhone
4) Fake multi-tasking is pointless. If I wanted to have my pictures upload to sugar sync or Box I had to keep the phone open to the app or the upload process would stop until I returned to the app screen.
5) I can get more information faster on my Android phone than the iPhone- this is due to widgets, a more sophisticated notification drawer, and IMO better app integration and organization.
FWIW, I am currently using my 6+ year old VAIO but my next computer will likely be a mac book air and I stopped using an iPod when I started using smart phones.
I just switched from iPhone to android also. Like android a lot it beats ios hands down but iPhone is still on top when it comes to apps and games I wish that would change soon.

Google owes the devs here a bunch of love for their work on pushing the OS as far as it has. Compare that to the "evolution" of the iOS - you'll see there's always some exciting new things coming our way. OK, not as polished as the apple apps.. but much more risque...
I can't stand the little bitty iPhone screen.
Same story for me bro. I I have every iPad out there (1,2,3), Mac Book Pro, MacBookAir, 4 iPhones, and Apple TV. I am no Apple fanboi.

I left iPhone after being with one since its initial release. I stopped at the iPhone 4. If they had come up with something better then the iPhone 4s, I probably would've stayed but I got tired of Apple always releasing outdated stuff (small screen, no 4g, slow processor, etc)
Since the 4, I had the Dell Streak 5 , HTC Inspire, Samsung Galaxy Tab (hacked to use as cell phone), Samsung Galaxy S II, and now the S III.
The main reason I am with Android is because of this forum, I love being able to change anything on my phone that needs changing, and the tons of roms that I can change to if I get bored of one.

Back with Samsung after 2 years with HTC

After two years with my EVO 4G (OG) it was starting to have some hiccups here and there. Mostly because of the power surges that came into my house and fried out 11 250 joule surge protectors, an LED TV, 2 FiOS STB's, the FiOS D-Mark, and a microwave. Charging my phone during the last strike from my local electric company had caused it to start running strangely. Or at least that is my theory.
Well, I decided I needed a new phone. I was lucky enough that I was due for an upgrade, so off to Best Buy I went. I was seriously toying with the idea of getting an SG3. My brother in law has one, as well as my wife's cousins. I thought it was a great phone and light years ahead of the EVO. Don't get me wrong, my EVO has served me phenomenally, but I wanted something nicer. I have 2 Epic 4Gs in my house, wife and son, plus I have had the Fascinate, the Moment and the Transform, so I know Samsung makes some great devices.
I walk into the Mobile center in Best Buy and gravitate towards the Sprint table and started looking at the SG3. There was nothing that really jumped out at me and there were no more HTC phones in the lineup. Sad, but never a deal breaker. Then I see it, the Galaxy Note II. I pick it up and it feels very comfortable in my hand. I am a big guy so I feel like an iPhone get's lost in my hand and this was the Goldilocks phone. Now for the moment of truth. Do they have the Titanium in stock? My EVO is white and so is my iPhone. The Note in white was just too much white. And not the cool Stormtrooper white with black accents like my EVO has, but pure stark white. That wouldn't do. The sales person approached and asked me if I needed help. I told him I wanted the GN2 in Titanium and he gave me an ashen look. He mentioned that they were on national back order, but he would look anyway. Lo and behold, he pulls out, according to him, the last Titanium GN2 in the country.
Everything goes swimmingly. They have the phone advertised for $299 for an upgrade, but I had seen it in Radio Shack for $199. I never thought to take a picture of the ad before I went to BB, but oh well. I told the new salesperson that was helping I would come back to get the $100 credit. She said she had a lot of luck beating Amazon Wireless' prices. She pulled up the site and I was able to get the Note for $199. Score! She got me up and activated in about 10 mins and I was out the door with my new toy.
Now, I swore to myself that I would test drive it for a week or two before rooting at and throwing a custom ROM. Too bad that lasted about 5 mins. I was able to root it even after doing the MA7 update. I am currently a lab rat because I actually like the stock TouchWiz. That may change but for the moment I like the Team Nocturnal ROM (great job guys!!) Battery life on this is insane!!! I charged it to full last night and took it off at about 10PM. I use it as a white noise generator and forgot to set the sleep timer, so it was going from midnight until I woke up at 7AM and I still had 90% battery. Awesome!!
I will probably spend most of my work day playing and tweaking it.

That may change if HTC comes out with something better, but the Note is a great device. Now to start really playing with it. :highfive:

Same boat here, DIE HARD EVO OG supporter. Phone still rocks, although requires some tweaking. I'm on my way to Sprint store this afternoon. What method did you use for root?
thats one hell of a post just to say you got a note 2. i think that everyone should do that. it would make the forums a super great place to get info about who has the note 2. i think we should just give up on developing and just announce ourselves. to me it just seems like a better use of bandwidth. i dont know. i wish i could just read welcome posts all day. :veryfun: :sarcasm:
Welcome to the team  I come from all three generations of the evo. Its so nice to be able to root your phone without all the hastle. I wouldn't go back to htc even after seeing the htc one. Also, Samsung and Sprint have been doing an awesome job of upgrading their phones. I'll be waiting on the Note 3.

I used MSKip's Galaxy Note II Toolkit Ver. 3.0. It was super-easy. It will still root even if you updated to 4.1.2 (MA7) I was rooted in under 5 minutes. (Excellent job MSKip!! :good: )

I got all 3 generations of Evos sitting on my desk right now too. I am not going back to HTC after buying the Note 2. Samsung just does the software so much better. Like why on my evo with 16gb of internal storage do I have to move my apps between a 2gb app partition and a 8gb internal partition

I also cone from a evo 4g. As a matter of fact, I bought the 3d for my wife and another 4g for my mom to use. Same deal here, 4g just want cutting it anymore and the note had been out for a little bit on sprint. So I got it and it's crazy impressive. The weight and the feel of it at first compared to htc devices wad misleading at first, but a good case and some time with it had made me a fan of Samsung.
My buddy at work has the htc dna and it feels like you could beat someone with it, but that's pretty much where the advantages end. This is the way to go. Fast, responsive, uses a stylus like the good old Palm days, and the battery life is amazing.
I've been with htc since the mogul days and have been a big fan of theirs, but always had to buy the extended batteries. I think the stock battery will do for this phone.
Samsung note ii
I also came from HTC. The HTC Desire HD. It was a great device.
You've got to love the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 though. :good:
An ex evo user myself. Welcome to the club....you made the right choice

Liked my Evo 3D for 2 years. Loving the Note II for 3 months! :highfive:
I had the og evo and the 3vo and after the locked bootloader BS and htcs backpedaling on opening up to development, I abandoned them and boycotted them. I won't buy any more HTC products, especially after them threatening lawsuits for ppl hosting RUUs and modified sense roms. They have become too applesque for my taste. Samsung has been good about ease of access for development (unlocked bootloaders and easy to root, just implemented a simple custom flash counter) and releasing source almost at the same time an OTA starts being pushed.
I like to break stuff!
I too have come from using all htc phones (mogul, tp2, and evo4g) and I must say this is one heck if a phone. Love everything about it. The battery lasts me as long as the batteries from all my htc phones combined. Everyonw that I have showed it too have been amazed by it..
Cant get enough of this phone
Also a ex evolte user made the jump the days ago this phone is off the chain I honestly feel like I may go my entire contact with this one!
