Being a hardcore winmo user/modder for past 4 years, I'm finally switching to an android based phone, Evo. The hardware, especially the WiMAX which is served where I live, got me to finally switch over to Android (pre-ordered Evo last week from shack ), and now got a few software questions.
When connecting Evo to some random win/mac computer through USB,
Will the external MicroSDHC card (and hopefully internal flash as well) act as a USB drive? Loading mp3's without taking out the card is a must, and since I do a lot of PC troubleshooting, also love using my phone as a drive where I store all my fav rescue tools and other portable apps/docs.
Is it possible to share either 3g or 4g data, like winmo's internet connection sharing feature, by having phone be detected as a generic network adapter? I prefer tethering data through USB because I notice faster and much more stable download/upload speeds compared to WiFi and many desktops which I work on don't come with WiFi card so USB is pretty much the only option. And also, the phone is being charged at the same time
Hopefully it'll be "yes" to both questions, but since I haven't dealt with Android before, besides running a crippled v2.0 on my HTC Touch Pro where USB didn't work anyways, I wanted to consult with the "experienced".

Yes to #1 and not so sure on #2... once it is rooted i imagine.

When you plug the Evo into your computer, it pops up with 4 options: Charge only, HTC Sync, Disk drive, and Internet sharing.
I have never tried the HTC Sync and Internet sharing before, but now I'm trying Internet sharing to see what it does.

That answers both of his questions. So when you plug in Evo, you can use it as disk drive, and as Internet sharing (USB tethering), very cool!

On ubuntu, it detected the phone immediately as usb0 and connected to it in 5 seconds.
On windows 7, it does the Installing device Drivers thing, then fails. Comes up with this status http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30367/Evo Tether.png
So I guess it works out of the box on Ubuntu but not Windows 7. Though it shouldn't be hard to install whatever you need. I'll update when I figure it out.
Edit: To get it working on Windows 7, I just installed the "HTC Sync\HTCSync2.0.31.exe" file on the sdcard then switched the "USB Connection Type" on the phone to Internet Sharing. Windows 7 then connected to the device as if you plugged in an ethernet cord.

Dont have 4G in California yet. But I'd assume you will share whatever mobile connection your phone is currently on, 3G/4G.
before i get too excited, has anyone tried the 64 bit drivers or just the 32? mobile internet+phone charging=better but i am on win7 64

confirmed that HTC EVO "internet sharing" working fine on Ubuntu 10.4 64bit - out of the box, no configuration needed. just plug in and it automatically connects

My post above was tested on Windows 7, 64 bit.
Once it's rooted, it'll work fine. I'm actually tethered to my G1 right now. Checking a box on the phone and plugging in the USB cable is exactly the same as plugging in an ethernet cord. It's really nice.

No, USB tethering is free AND unlimited.
i use ics
i use internet connection sharing, ics to import the wired usb tether web connection and send it out my lan port to a wifi router running ddwrt...
the router can broadcast the wifi.
i did it pre root using the 10 buck easy tether app.
i rooted 2.2 last night and got wifi tether working this mornign
so i am currently seeing how to usb tether post root w/o easy tether.
so both are possible most likely post, but definatly pre root.

Thing is, when I copy larger files from my PC over WiFi using any File Manager, speed is like 500KB/sec which is pretty low.
Any thoughts or ideas?
What are your speeds like just running Speed Tests?
11.5Mbit download, 3Mbit upload, that's what Speed Tests shows.
My laptop downloads the same files from my PC over the same WiFi network at 10MB/sec. I hoped GN would at least do more than 1MB/sec.

Sounds like its the apps problem if the speed tests show good down/up speeds.
I'm finding this aswell, It's really annoying me. On speed test I get about 7-800kbs which is ridiculous when I can download on my laptop over the same wireless network at ~6mbs (50Mbit internet connection). It doesn't bother me so much for installing apps and such as I they tend to be pretty small so its ok, the problem arises when transferring large files to the phone as it takes an age. It's also a problem as I was hoping to be able to stream my bluray rips to the phone, the video processor is fully capable of decoding the content but due to this annoying network bottleneck I can't play any films over around the 7GB mark and I've not got a prayer with my 20GB+ rips which over devices on the network have no trouble streaming.
Which app do you use to transfer?

I'm still waiting for my Nexus so i can't exactly comment on the device itself, but I use the app "SwiFTP" on my Galaxy S2
I think its an awesome app - all you need is a FTP client on your computer and WiFi connection.
SwiFTP basically makes your phone a FTP server and you can use your PC client to connect to your phone and browse/transfer files. Usually speeds range about 2-3mb/s for me which is fast enough

speedtest gives me about 50Mb dl and 10Mb ul

OK I tried different app: Wireless File Transfer Pro.
It runs on the phone, then you open a browser on PC and select files to upload. Doesnt show data transfer rate, but I can already see it's much better (I was refreshing the folder on the phone while 650MB file was being transfered).
So at least it's not hardware. (actually Ive read that GN has same WiFi chip as SGS2).
Anyway, sounds like it's all software related.
I prefer to see data transfer rate when moving/copying and so few apps support that
so is it a good or bad thing that the nexus has the same wifi chip as the galaxy s 2?

It's a no-go. Samsung/Google should have reinvented the wheel for the GN!
Seriously: If the GN didn't have the SGS2-wifi chip, it could be a better or a worse wifi chip, so it's neither a good nor a bad thing.
I have restarted my router and then retested the same operation in the same app on both: SGS2 and GN.
SGS2 was transfering at 1.6MB/sec, while GN at 1.2MB/sec. But at the same time I have tested CPU usage while transfer was ongoing and it was 20% at 520MHz, so that's nice.
But I did find out that other apps can transfer much quicker so its not that bad. It's just far from desktop PC speeds, at least as of now. Custom ROMs/kernels might improve things.
What apps do you guys use to transfer files wirelesly onto GN over WiFi? Any benchmarking done? Talking about files minimum 400MB in size.
Retested WiFi File Transfer app trat transfers files from desktop PC via browser, was getting ~2.8MB/sec. Galaxy Nexus, same WiFi network as previous tests. CPU usage while that transfer was in progress was 700-800MHz, 40-50%.
I use es file explorer and its very fast..

Mine doesn't drop at all. Seems to work just like SGS2 did.
The local file transfer speeds have absolutely nothing to do with your ISP's internet throughput speeds, it has everything to do with the type of your router, and the frequency you're connecting your device to.
If your router is 802.11g, the speeds will be capping in theory to 54mbps, in reality much, much lower.
If your router is 802.11n and you're connecting to 5Ghz access point, max theoretical speeds are over 300mbps when transferring files internally, again real world speeds are much slower due to interference, etc.
Also the actual flash memory in smartphones are not as speedy as solid state drives in computers so that's another bottleneck.
So firstly check the exact model of your router, google the spec sheet and start troubleshooting.
In my case the fastest speed I have seen so far was 3.2MB/sec, which is like 30Mbit. That was when uploading big file from desktop PC to my GN. This was on 2.4GHz n network with 40Mz band.

That's pretty much as high as you'll see on 2.4Ghz g network. Remember your flash storage has to keep up with all the file writing and it's far from being fast.
Safe to say you're seeing healthy transfer rates, mate.

I'm using stock rom/kernel and testing file transfer via WiFi through smb connection (ES File Manager and CifsManager connected to a Windows share)
With both apps the maximum speed I could achieve was 0.9Mbytes/sec, this is at least 6 times slower then phone's capability, because when testing internet speed when connected to the same wifi network I get expected 5Mbytes/sec.
SD card where files are being saved has 15Mbytes/sec write speed (tested with SDCardTester app) and the computer I'm transferring files from is also not the issue, it's connected to the router via cable and I have sustain file transfer speed between two computers of 90-140Mbytes/sec.
So it seems somehow SMB connection doesn't use all the available bandwidth. Any ideas why is that and how to fix it?

I'd suggest trying FX File Explorer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx). Gives me better SMB transfer rates than other apps I've tried.
Too bad it's not free when it comes to networking.
Since two different apps I've mentioned giving me exactly the same results, I kind of suspect it's not related to the app, but rather to the system...I know CifsManager is highly depend on the kernel and ES File Manager also doesn't work if certain features not enabled in the kernel.
I think I know the answer to this but just wanted to ask around and gather opinions. I tether the connection from my S3 to my N7 quite a lot and there are times when I see variation in data transfer speeds while doing stuff that does not need internet. For e.g.: the other day I was uploading a file from my N7 to my S3 using an FTP server running on my S3. This did not involve Internet since it was a device to device transfer. The devices were placed at the same spot all the time. What I noticed what that there were instances where the transfer speed dropped to under 100 KBps.
Sometimes the speed was in the upwards of 3000+ KB/s and would stick there for quite some time before dropping back. I was using an FTP client which was reporting the transfer rate.
Hence the question, is there anything like one tethering up is better than the other in terms of speed or do they all use the underlying infrastructure and have no control the speed what so ever?
Also, does anyone know of an app or a widget that reports the transfer rate of a tethered connection?

I do all my downloading via LTE as I'm on an unlimited data plan and my connection speed is considerably higher than my fixed line internet but when I'm transferring the files to my pc via wifi, it seems abnormally slow. My files download at around 34MB/s (megabytes per second) but when I transfer them to my PC via wifi using cx file explorer (have also tried ES pro) I'm getting around 15MB/s. I'm using 5ghz AC wifi and the link speed in my phones wifi settings is 866mbps. Transferring the same files from my laptop to my PC via wifi is much faster at above 60MB/s.
Does anyone know what's going on here or have any ideas to figure it out?

Check to make sure that you aren't coming into any issues with wifi signal disruptions. Make sure your router is configured correctly.
Something's to try:
Choose a less congested wifi channel
Make sure you are using AES encryption
Select 40mhz or 80mhz channel bandwidth
Relocate the router to a different area
Restart the router
There is a lot of info on transfer speeds and etc, but suffice it to say a bunch of things come into play. If your running stock firmware then try getting a reliable class 10 microsd card for best read/write speeds. Keep in mind that microsd cards are rated for a max speed of up to X number (in mb/s). Sequential read/write, random read/write speeds will vary in speed.
MicroSD Cards write/read in megabytes per second, which is not the same as megabits per second of your wifi router (or USB 3.1 gigabits per second) speed. Internal storage is faster then microsd, I don't have the specs Infront of me right this second so I can't tell you by how much.
Also your wifi router does not give dedicated speeds per device, it has a set amount of speed that is shared amongst connected devices. More wifi devices connected transmitting/recieving data will cause speeds to decrease. Also the Wifi speed your seeing on the phone doesn't include any overhead from the router (or overheard from SMB/CIFS, etc), so your true speed may vary.
Try the router adjustments and see if that helps. If not then you may just have to live with what your getting speed wise for wifi transfers to/from PC.
* I will do some transfer tests with my wifi today and tomorrow to add more info on transfer speeds/setup. I am expecting a new wifi 6 capable router tomorrow, so I will post results of both of my routers after I get that set up...

First set of read/write is done with my current router. I am connected via 802.11 5Ghz A/N/AC with a manually selected 157 channel using AES encryption. I made 3 attempts with the same file and the stats provided are average speed measurements. Like yourself my phone was indicating the WiFi speed was 866 mbps during the transfer.

My 5ghz wifi is running on 80mhz bandwidth, I've used inssider to check for other networks and there are none in my area running at 5ghz. My router is located in a space behind the sofa so I'm basically sat on top of it.
I recently installed the ASUSwrt-merlin firmware on my router (as well as the required full factory reset after the installation) but I've been experiencing the slow transfer speeds before and after installing that firmware. I have also tried putting my phone at the top of the QOS list in the router settings as well as turning QOS off completely.
I'm not using an SD card, all my files are being transferred from internal storage. I understand the difference between megabytes per second (MB/s) and megabits per second (mbps), USB 3.1 rev 2 is 10gbps, therefore has a throughput of 1250MB/s, obviously, you won't get that exact speed in the real world but you can expect a throughput of around 1GB/s providing both devices can handle that speed as well as the cable. I have done a storage speed test on my phone and the sequential read is over 1500MB/s and the write is over 500MB/s, well over what I'm actually getting over USB. I can deal with the USB speeds I'm getting, although it's slower than I expected (about 100MB/s), its fast enough for now.
If you could post the speeds you're getting, that would be great, If you're getting similar speeds then I know I'm just expecting too much from a mobile device (maybe Samsungs wifi module just isn't as powerful as a laptop one?). If not then I know I've got a bottleneck somewhere that needs fixing.

I use wifi direct instead of es pro, es pro transfers much slower for me for some weird reason, Maybe it's something to do with the es or cx apps, have you tried wifi direct? I'll try cx file explorer a little later and post my speeds as well.
Edit: ok, cx file explorer took 20 minutes and 8 seconds to transfer a 918 MB file, a direct usb c 3.1 connection to my same laptop took 25 seconds for the same 918 MB file and wifi direct took about 45 seconds for the same 918 MB file. Sorry I dont have the speeds but it looks like it's something to do with the apps. Also have you tried using a cloud storage for transfers like dropbox or onedrive? It's may be faster.
Edit Edit: I also read that the usb cable that comes with the note 10+ only uses usb 2.0 speeds which is what I used.
