Have you unlocked the phone with HTC-Dev ?
Installed a custom rom and/or custom kernel ?
If your phone is still locked (and not relocked) you can go and claim warranty. If you are unlocked it will be more difficult (HTC needs to demonstrate it's your fault and they mainly can't... but the are the big firm...)
Give some more information about what you were doing when it overheated, gaming ?
EDIT : Oups... haven't totaly read the last sentence...
Well franco is known for massive heat... If you have left a game on during an hour (even if it only was a back-task) it could have damaged yourr phone :/ Have you bought it in a store or at a carrier shop ?
Carriers don't give much for HTC policies, they just check a bit if the phone has scratches or if it fall down and will probably change it (just try to get it back to stock !!)

And you are sure that there was no game rnning as a background task ?
I'm more on AOSP rom's, but I remember that when using franco's R12, my phone got so hot I could berrely take it in my hands...
First I would do is backing up data (Titanium Backup or MyBackup pro; SMS Backup & Restore and the rest being done by google account, save all your photos etc on a PC)
Try to flash a RUU to get back to stock, and look if it still gives the same issues.
If Yes -> your phone has an issue
If No -> Try again to flash a rom and a kernel (I would go with Faux 4b5 it's just perfect, working at 1100Mhz and -100mV UV, you get pretty good battery life) and look at the result.
I don't know Viper, but i cna recommand you Slim ICS or AOKP by Nycbjr and Lord Clockan, theyy are both very stable and my phone was never hot in adition with faux 4b5.
Good luck

If I remember well, if you live in Europe, there is no such thing as "warranty cancelling" go to your local customer rights specialist/lawyer. But in fact you will need a proof of buy, haven't you got a receipt when buying from ebay ?

Is there a point to unroot the phone, come back to 2.1 ruu to find out or maybe the phone need to be send back for repair?
Thanks Guys

It's a damn common problem on Desire. Also i have the same problem. When the phone try to connect to 3G network go in crash. Also i tried more times full wipe, hard reset, RUU. Nothing. The issue is HARDWARE. The only way is the substition og the phone (or of the motherboard).
Good Luck
Same for mine. Sent to HTC for repair
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks Guys, That's what I thought but didn't like to put it through my mind,

Yup, same here. I've allready sent my device for repair and now waiting for new device. It's hardware issue.
Regards, X.
My desire kept restarting whilst using open desire and dj Droid Rom. Since I've switched back to official 2.1 stock Rom not rooted my phones not rebooted once. So I'm not sure if its always a hardware related thing. Hmmm

Probably you have bootloader 0.80
Try with stock ROM 1.21.XXXXXX
It's was ok for me
My Desire would soft-reset at least once daily on the stock 2.1 ROM. Switching to Cyanogen has fixed that. Which I was surprised to find.

THANK YOU!
I think someone should put this info into the sticky topic, there is nothing to mention that you need this specific ruu to unroot 0.0 bootloader...
I will test the phone now to see if the reboots are still in th case...
Could anyone who send their phone away tell me how long would take to get the phne fix in uk? can they provide a replacement or up to us to bother?
Ta
I've noticed that mine will reboot constantly after I flash a new ROM.
However, I don't think it's the flashing that is the issue. See after a wipe and flash I usually sign into Google to get sync my contacts and calendar.
Since 2.2 the phone tries to automatically download apps from the market.
If I'm using HSPA (3G) to download while the phone is plugged in and charging I will 100% of the time get constant reboots until I physically remove the battery.
Even then, if I remove the charger and try the phone will keep rebooting. I usually end up having to charge the battery while the phone is off then remove the charger. It will then usually work with no issue or random reboots.
I've tested this when I'm using Wi-Fi - Never a reboot issue.
Also tested using extensive 3G (soon after flash) without charger plugged in. Phone will sometimes (maybe 25% of the time) go into a boot loop with each reboot occurring within a few minutes of each startup.
It's no secret that the phone gets hot when using 3G to download a lot of data. For some reason this is compounded after each flash.
I use syspanel to monitor battery temps and in the situations described above where the phone starts constantly rebooting the temps are around 36c - 38c. I'm not exactly sure because it reboots before I can get accurate temp.
I question syspanel accuracy because it feels bloody hot! Temps are normally usually around 22 - 27c and it feels cool to the touch. Hard to believe 10c can make that much difference.
Could this be a hardware design, like how CPUs will throttle once a certain temp is reached to prevent damage? Or maybe thermal paste (is that even used in phones?) not properly applied to some component on the PCB.
Perhaps others can comment on their battery temps. Sounds like that's the issue if maps and navigation (data + battery intensive) cause reboots.
Also, as mentioned by someone else I can't remember (sorry to the poster) after I update or restore Launcher Pro my battery drain becomes ridiculous (I've lost 100% in 4 hrs). Quick reboot after update or restore solves the drain.
Now the phone is running stock rom and radio,
Tried google maps today, and it only last for about 2 min before reboot, when the phone is in normal usage like calls and texts I never had a reboot,
Must be a overheating components, like you said thermal paste or something.
Tonite i will give them a phone and the courier to pick it up.
Do you think guys is worth to mention about mainboard? that will need to be replace or just mention overheating issues and constant reboots?
Do they provide a replacement unit for the time being?
Thanks all

That's exactly the issue I had - could replicate a reboot within minutes of Google Maps use. I also believe this to be a heat/paste issue, as the unit got incredibly hot (on one occasion almost too hot to pick up).
Mine was replaced as being faulty (with Virgin in the UK) after I recited several forums and a google search to the operative. You might be able to get this with Three if you push for it but Virgin are the only ones I know of actually replacing the handsets (FYI thier callcentre staff seem to know thier stuff).
I will miss my desire Courier will pick it up tomorrow and God knows how long it will take to get it fixed!!
Customer Service was excellent so far, the guy even said that this is actually quite a common issue with Desire( too much power inside such a small device)
Hopefully I'll get a new motherboard!
Thanks guys for all your help! Now is the time to start up OLD grandpa Sony Ericcson for the time being...
Reboot with GPS and Charging
Hi
I have send my desire for repair, because it reboots every time i use navigation and charging at same time. Navigation alone dosn't reboot.
I tried to reinstall, but HTC would let me have the file to try to rewrite the ROM.
I try to times to clear the phone several times, but now i just wait to see if they will find the problem or just rewrite the ROM.

People, see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676402
It may be a hardware fault and seens to be a know issue for HTC (read the statements).
Read that thread and you'll see you have do send your Desire to repair/replace.
Heres the story.
I got my HTC desire a few days ago, and immediately rooted using unrevoked2 and then put the CM6 Rom on it.
I've noticed a few things:
- In 1 hr, with no IM programs, web browsing, or GPS my network usage meter said I used over 2MB of data.
-I can IM and search the Android Market with Wifi but can't surf or download from the Market. If I switch to network data I can.
-Ive had to do two battery pulls today. The first time the screen was unresponsive, and the second time my phone froze. I hit the "power button" and got a system error. When I hit ok, the phone showed no service. A battery pull fixed that.
In 5hrs my battery went from 78% to 32%. I did not surf or IM, or use any apps (other than network monitor apps), and made 1 30 second phone call.
-WIFI is on, BT is on, GPS is on. Network location is off.
Because of this I'd like to go back to stock and get a benchmark or at least see if the "issues" stick around. I'm running hboot .83 and the rom was 1.29. The phone has been unlocked, but was originally for Telus (not sure if that means its unbranded or not. I have absolutely nothing on the phone that I am concerned about saving. I did not make a gold card for this either. (Starting to think this was a bad thing.
If I revert back using the stock HTC rom, and then I want to go back to CM6 am I starting from scratch again? IE has it been unrooted, and is the bootloader locked again, or do I just have to reinstall CM6?
Thanks in advance. I know questions of this variety have been asked before but I can't find anything regarding my boot loader version and rom version specifically.
Can anyone help me with this?
FWIW once you rooted, you should've made a Nandroid backup of your original ROM which would have made it much easier to switch back, but that's by the bye.
Why not just install another Sense ROM from Recovery rather than go back to your original ROM?
Regards,
Dave

Can you suggest one that is close to stock. I know it sounds crazy but basically CM6 is murder on my battery. Within 2 hours of powering up and very little usage (browsing and im'ing) im down to 80%. I'd like to go back to stock to benchmark it to see if its a hardware issue, or a software issue.
That said, I also liked the stock UI as bizarre as that sounds.
And just to confirm, its too late to make a gold card now?
Alright so ive used the search and couldnt find anything. I have a rooted s2 running eagles blood v1.1 and last night i flashed over lite'ing theme and now my phone screen will shut off and wont allow me to turn it back on, i have to hold the power button and it restarts. Ive reflashed eagleblood even recovered back to stock with just root and it continues to do it.
Any help would be much appriciated :/

Probably best to post this in the rom developer's thread. Any number of things can cause this behavior.
I would but my post count is low and i am unable to post there, so for now i am seeking help here.
ive tried un-rooting the phone, flashing the stock rom and no root, but have the same issue.

I'm having the same problem on rooted stock rom. It's getting more and more frequent. The phone just refuses to come back on after going to sleep. If I plug in the power/usb cable, it actually makes the connected noise as if it's actually awake but the screen stays off.
I've uninstalled all cpu and memory tweaking apps and am still experiencing the issue.

though my problem did seem to start right when i flashed lite'ing theme for eaglesblood (not saying that caused it )

im starting to think it is a phone issue myself, going to find out Tuesday when my new one arrives though i am hoping it was an error on my part because this phone has the chance to be fantastic.
I was having random shutdowns with my 1st phone, the thing is I never did have stock long enough (rooted after 45min of gettjng) to see if it was the phone or root/rom(s).
My second phone is working great without any random shutdowns, but I'm still stock(running on second day of testing).
Gonna root and flash tomorrow and hope everything remains the same if not back it goes before my remorse period ends.
I really think it's phone related rather then a rom because I've never had this problem with previous phones.
So I would suggest on exchanging it.

i do appreciate the feed back, and from everyone who did give it. after lots of research and back and fourth between stock and custom roms i definitely wanted it to be the rom so it was fixable but im about 96% sure its the actual phone its self.
Hey i just bought this Galaxy Nexus from a Guy. At first it worked perfectly but after a few minutes it rebooted non stop.
So after i got home i've reflashed the Stock Google rom with the Toolkit, it change nothing so i put a custom rom on it, it change nothing (tried ParanoidAndroid, CM9, Kang...).
SO flahsed a different Stock rom through GN Toolkit. Stil the same. Flashed trought ODIN nothing (even thought the Odin rom was an old).
Right now it boots. I can use it 4 or 5 minutes and:
-The android system restart and go to the Bootanimation.
or
-The shutdown very quickly in a *pop sound. Et restart from beginning.
I think i'm going to send it to the repaire center. But i had 2 alaxy Note which i've bricked due to the SuperBrick problem. And i took the GN to have no issue with Android. Turns out i have...
I'm sorry if this has been before but i can't find a solution. And i'd like to have a phone tomorrow.

Well, have you tried doing a battery pull, leaving it for 1-2 hours and then restarting the phone?
That's just one way... Before freaking, chill...
Whether you want it, or not; I'm going to tell you, what your phone is doing.
It's not restarting, every time it restarts with the *pop* sound, it's rebooting, from a crash. Every time it restarts, directly to the bootanimation, it's doing a hot reboot...
You're doing a very sensible thing, sending it in, because this is a definite hardware issue, that's why the guy probably sold it... Anyways, before you send it in, relock the bootloader (Enter fastboot and type
Code:
fastboot oem lock
)
Then make sure you have a stock firmware...
What I think is causing these problems? The guy who sold you the phone probably overclocked & overvolted that phone too much and for too long.

Sure, why not? It's worth a try. Just don't undervolt too much, leave the CPU at min. 700 MHz, and set voltage on 700 MHz, to 900-950 mv.
Do that, and it may just be daft enough to work
Thanks!
Fast and great answer!
If you have already flashed stock image then you would have had the stock kernel which runs at stock speeds and stock voltages. If it didn't work then lowering the CPU clock speed won't work. Its not even a solution to your problem.
If it won't work with completely stock image then all you can do is send it back, sounds faulty to me.

I didn't say that, either. I said it's worth a try. Read my first post (I think it was) and you'll see that I said it's better to send it in ^^

Jelly Bean saved my Nexus
Was having this same problem, flashed CM9, AOKP, stock (every version) to no avail. Saw that JB dropped on XDA and flashed that just to play with it, thought my phone was borked but I just wanted to screw around. Totally revived my phone. Haven't had a single reboot in the 12 hrs I've been using it (coming from a reboot every few min). Just as a further note I was wiping everything when I flashed (battery stats, Dalvik, data...). PS JB rules hardcore!
I myself have been having random reboots with this nexus.
Actually picked up this phone 3 days ago new from Verizon so the phone hasn't been rooted/unlocked yet.
I want to love this phone. But the bootloops, etc is making it difficult for me.
Might have to succumb to the sgs3 as the last resort. :L
Hello All,
Yesterday I started having a strange issue.
I was trying to apply Zagg Screenguard on my HOX. So I moisted it with the application solution that they provided. But I feel I just put a little more solution that needed too and the screen got a little dampen. However I removed all excess moist and liquid solution asap after applying the screenguard.
However to my dreaded surprise I started having a strange issue since then. The phone boots up and screen and buttons all work perfectly. But if I let the screen sleep for say 30 secs or so and then try to wake it up again, the screen just remains blank. Capacitive buttons do light up showing the phone is on and not hanged or off. I have to restart the phone to again get the screen work.
I also tried removing the screenprotector suspecting there might be some moist still there causing the issue, but no help
I also installed the Maximux JB rom yesterday only just before applying the screenprotector. I know its far fetched , but do the rom can have anything to do with it.
Please guide me what to do asap.
Thanks in advance !
WOW.. no replies yet ...
OK.. I got more info to make the issue more clearer... I do think that the phone hangs before screen goes blank.. I think the issue is that when the phone kept in sleep for few minutes apparently it hangs then only and screen doesn't come up.
Also I checked the 'Stay awake while charging' option from Developers options settings and it seem to work ok till I charge the phone , but as soon as I pull it from charger within few minutes the same issue.
Now it is beginning to be more apparent to me that the issue is somehow related to voltage settings and its getting two low when at deep sleep. I have not changed the voltage setting as I'm using stock settings on maximus rom which is nearly stock.
Is there a way to recalibrate voltage settings by software. Maybe I should install a custom kernel and increase volatage scale? or do I have to take it to the technician to have a look at ?
Pl help ! I'm forced to use my secondary phone as regular one which I don't like very much !
Cheerio !!!
Do a nandroid backup.
Install official ROM.
Test it.
Decide whether it's the ROM or not.
Decide whether to restore your backup.

Thing is I have upgraded to Hboot 1.28 to install JB maximus. So not sure if I can install official rom on this , until official JB is released.
Also I'm pretty sure now that issue is not software related. I have tried 3 different roms and different kernels that I can try and still the same issue.
Also I tried changing governers and voltage settings using voltage control, but no use.
