Custom Roms and Backup - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello, I am lost and can really use some help. I am rooted with CWM, I have flashed EL26 kernel and I would like to flash either wicked sensations or blu kuban rom. My question is what happens to all my data, like my contacts, apps I downloaded, etc.? Would I lose all that in the new rom? I did a back up using my backup pro and I also have done a phandorid back up in CWM. I really want to flash but I am scared of losing everything. Please help...
Also, which rom do you all think is better for me, blu kuban or the wicked sensations?
Thank you all so much for your help!!!

titanium backup apps, dl some sort of SMS backup if you care about that, and as long as your contacts are synced with your Gmail you'll be fine there as well... as to romreccomendations I can't help you there I switch between mijjhzs goodness, aokp and cm9 myself and love em all...also since you've done a nandroid you can always flash back to el26 and restore if you lose something crucial, but you shouldn't as long as you back everything up

[Q] Can you CWM backup SRF1.2, flash EG22, then CWM restore SRF1.2 without any issue?

I should know this but I haven't tried it. Can I make a backup of my current SRF1.2 ROM via CWM, flash an EG22 rom and if I decide to go back to Froyo simply restore my CWM backup of SRF1.2?
Thanks

Thanks, figured as much.
youll still have the eg22 modem, which will work, but you can odin just the ec05 or whatever modem you want back...
Well, for the most part yes. I do a ton of testing and I have gotten Google Services Framework errors on occasion when restoring a nandroid specifically after being on Gingerbread. It seems totally random though and if you aren't constantly changing setups like I am, you may not have this happen to you

I always have 2-3 nandroid backups to switch between different roms etc. Been back and forth between EC05 based roms and EG22 w/plus kernel like 4-5 times this week alone, and no issues.

I keep 3 or 4 nandroid backups myself. Perhaps its due to the absurd amount of testing I do that it catches up to me (sometimes 4 to 5 times changing setups in a day) that it catches up to me. Its not likely but it is a possibility.

Hey John, with all the switching around and flashing, what method are you using for restoring apps and data? cwm advance nandroid restore or titanium backup or both?
I've been on srf exclusively but with all the cool new gb roms I'm itchin to play around. Also what is your current favorite new rom?

I never restore data from one ROM on to a different ROM. I always do a clean install of apps and such. What I do is flash a ROM, get all of my apps added, set it up exactly how I want it then make my nandroid. Now, when I do restore data I do it through CWM Recovery Advanced/Restore Data Only. I do that (for example) if I install SRF 1.2 fresh then restore data from a SRF nandroid. Now people do restore data only from one ROM to another and don't have problems. I just can't test thoroughly that way because it could be app conflict causing an error. I wouldn't recommend restoring data from a Froyo ROM onto Gingerbread though. Now my Favorite ROM??? Wow that's tough. On Froyo; (in no specific order) SRF 1.2, Urban Regeneration, and ERA ReVolt. On Gingerbread its a ROM that isn't out yet...CompKid's upcoming EG22 release is going to be a big hit. They are all good though. You really have to try them and see what works best for you

Data Partition

Is it possible to save a data partition from your existing ROM that can be flashed with Mobile Odin? So i could flash a new Rom, Kernel, Modem, then the specific Data partition that I saved from my ROM that holds all my user specific data. Is something like that possible? I am tired of having to set all the apps, data, email servers, and appearances of my old ROM back up after flashing a new ROM. It wont stop me from flashing if I cant......LOL...just wondering if its possible.
I know there is TB and Backup apps but they still take to long to do everything needed. I am lookingfor a one flash type thing to just reapply all user data specific stuff. Possible?

You sure can sir, just make sure you don't restore from gb to ics or vice versa, simply go into recovery after new rom is flashed and wipe cache and delvik cache then go to backup and restore and advance restore your data
Awesome, I will give it a try on the next round of leaks!
Thanks.
Just wanted to stop back in and say holy Sh!t. Why have I been bothering with TB and MyBackupPro for so long when I could have been doing this. Soooooooooo much easier.
Make a backup of your data in advance backup
install new rom
restore data with advance restore
Done
No more email setup
No more passwords for wifi
No more home screen setup
Its all done by advance backup and advance restore.
Restoring just got way easier.

Because it doesn't always work....if recovery gives you a md5 mismatch or something and alot of times it can cause force close... Do keep a titanium backup also just in case
Also you can usually do this from tw to tw but not tw to aosp ....can cause problems like I said....similar roms usually ok

If you are on a good kernel with good recovery and not restoring say from GB to ICS it has always worked for me on my Epic and Epic Touch. Now, if you are changing between GB and ICS it can throw all kinds of gapps, acore, and Google Services Framework errors at you so you may want to keep a Titanium backup like Epix said...just in case

Is it possible?

To do a nandroid advanced restore of data from a gb rom to a ics rom? Currently on calks ics fd24 and i have a nandroid of blazer rom. Would doing an advanced restore of data be ok or do you think it might mess something up?

I'd use sfhubs autoroot EL26+StockCWM. Safest bet for sure.
Im not trying to go back to gb, i want to restore my data from a gb rom to the ics rom im on now.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Oh I wouldn't do that yet. But, you can try it an let us all know. For maximum safety I've just been using Odin to flash then going back to the stock EL26+CWM to then flash to ICS builds. And then I have to reinstall all my apps and do the configuration of everthing again - real pain in the anus. Main reason I haven't been flashing as much. I have kept coming back to my Blazer Rom. After messing with ICS I'll do the above (Oding stock EL26, add stock CWM - both from sfhub) then restore my last nandroid. It gets me back to completely working phone. I'm hoping to get some answers to using the 'preserve data' option to update/upgrade so I can save a crap load of time and effort.
Ill try and see what happens. Also, i thought the ics kernels were only giving problems for flashing roms? Whenever im on a ics rom and i want to go back to blazer, i just wipe and restore, no issues.

N00B question: Hate new ICS need to go back to GB

A friend created a nandroid and Titanium backup for me, and my phone is rooted. I'm currently on ICS and I want to go back to GB, Do I have to Restore Epic 4G Touch With Pre-Rooted Stock Gingerbread Firmware — EL29? or can I just use nandroid recovery since it's like a full system image right?
So confused. Want to go back to old GB without losing apps or settings. Please help?
You can restore the nandroid from a safe recovery like EL26.

N00B here, seriously. I was a WEBOS fan and I rooted there but it's difficult for me to understand the terms for Android and the fragmentation doesn't help
Model: SPH-D710
Android: 4.04

Kernel:3.0.15-SPH-D710.FF18-CL663858 [email protected] #3

Does that help?
Thanks guys for your patience!

Yes that helps. If you don't like ICS (FF18) ODIN back to EL29 (Gingerbread). thats the safest way or to keep what you had under your backup; ODIN Direct boot kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 its under the GB touchwiz based kernels. Flash that kernel, it will only boot to CWM and then restore your backup. But to let you know, there are better custom ICS ROMs that are very smooth and stable. Just make sure you use the safe kernel/recovery like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 Then you can safely wipe and flash any ICS ROMs you choose.

I downloaded this: SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx
but will it delete my apps, settings, msgs, etc?
It seems like it will factory restore and wipe everything>
Is there a way to just use the backup and reset it to then? If so can you please dumb down instructions and what it will do? I really really appreciate any help. I'm sure that once I go through it, it will make more sense but at this time, I'm overwhelmed by all the different setups and instructions from different places.
All I want is to restore a backup I have with GB. What is the easiest way to do that without losing info?

Ok get titanium back or a backup app. Then back up all your apps, just apps not system settings. then with titanium back up you can make a flashable zip. odin back to EL29 + CWM. let it boot up. Then power off, reboot into recovery. Flash Titanium backup Zip. Reboot. the titanium backup app will be on your phone. then restore apps only, not apps with data as ICS is very different. All done

Nandroids are used to restore backups. They are backups. If you backed up a GB rom. You can restore all your settings as long as you are on a GB rom.

I would love to LOVE ICS but the only thing I want my SGII to do without apps or widgets that I have to turn on and off to use:
Control orientation: I sometimes read in bed and it irks me that I have to use an app called Autorotate Switch to stop it from switching views, it does work but sometimes cuts off the top of a chapter. I can also hear it "fighting" with the system to prevent it from rotating based on the angle I'm holding it.
Control Brightness: The lowest setting isn't dim enough and I have to use a screen filter. Now with ICS it autoadjusts the lighting even when the toggle is off the setting to adjust brightness automatically! I hate this new feature.
Social Hub: I actually like this since it integrates msg and email and fb together. The new ICS lets me easily delete without confirmation, something that's good, but it broke update syncing contacts and the emails are huge and it's a big mess with scrolling and spacing.
Camera: All I want is to assign a shutter button to a camera
Phone: I want to call out in speaker automatically. I had set this up in WebOs and it was awesome especially for driving.
I seriously would consider trying out other ROMs if they can help me do this...

How would I do this? My friend made an nandroid in GB BEFORE I upgraded to ICS. Please and thank you in advance!
That is the GB direct boot kernel that I linked it the previous reply. Flash that kernel/recovery in ODIN or mobile ODIN. Then restore back up in backup/restore option in CWM recovery.

Issues with Epic 4G Touch ICS

Okay so my sister updated her epic a few days ago, and has been having nonstop problems with the ICS build FF18 there are just so many bugs in this and wondering if there is anything she can do without wiping her data on the phone.
She has two options. After ROOTING and flashing a custom recovery, she can either:
1. Backup all the data she wants: apps, sms, system settings, home screen layout and call log.She can use ROM Toolbox, My Backup Root or Titanium Backup. Those are the best. I personally recommend ROM Toolbox, but My Backup Root can backup sms and call logs.
After that she can flash any ROM she wants and then restore the data of all the apps.
2. She can try to format system only and then flash any ROM she wants. This is the easiest way but it is very risky to do it.
The first method is the most recommended. It is always recommended to flash a clean install.
Hope this helps. You can find all the links you want for Rooting and Flashing in the Android Development section.
If you need anything else, let us know...

About the only option you would have then is using Kies to backup, wipe the phone with a factory reset and restore through Kies.
If you have been reading through the threads, then you should know that the brick bug is still a major concern with the latest ota.
But you really don't have any other option if you're not going to root.

I don't blame her. It's no longer a great or even good phone for the majority of people. Even with custom roms and customizations I get about half the performance. They should have never released this update to the masses.

it's the first Ics update of course there gonna be bugs that's a must for any update all the kinks haven't been worked out yet and if she hates the phone so much now then why not save yourself another 200 and root downgrade unroot it and stop being stubborn and difficult it's not going to kill her

It is the apps that are on there. She has to start from a clean slate. Get Go BackUp, backup just contacts, sms, mms, and call log. Factory Reset. Then reinstall the the apps she wants from the Play Store. This worked for me.
you need update the device to stock FH13.. maybe fixed your issue about battery drain...
Running FH13 with 2 hours on screen time and 60% battery left. I started at about 90% after flashing the update patch from FF18 to FH13.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I saw huge battery improvements flashing fh13. that is if you flashed the kernel and everything.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I dont understand what the issue is..
Solution seems clear...
Download EL26 one-click,
Apply EL26 one-click,
Disable OTA,
Unroot.
Never ever have ICS again,
Done.
