Charger making noises?! What the hell - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My Galaxy Nexus is the GSM version, international. The charger is for Europe, so... it's not like the version for US, I believe. Don't know how different it is (aside from the connectors), and since chances are the people that are gonna answer me are from the US... oh well...
When the charger is plugged in to the wall socket, but the phone is not plugged in, it buzzes... the charger emitts a very high pitch, constant noise... I can hear it very well during day, with my window open (not too much noise going on, except for a few birds and a few distant sirens). During night... it's worse than the Chinese drop, lol.
Don't get me wrong - it's not LOUD, but given it's very high pitch... you get the point. The noise I'm talking about can be compared to those Ultra Ring ringtones you probably used to play to annoy others as a child... if you're around the age of 20, like me, lol. It's not THAT loud, but... Oh well.
If I unplug the charger, the noise begins to dissapear... it begins to oscilate, faster & faster, until it vanishes completely.
The same noise is being emitted by the charger when the phone is charging, but the battery level is above 85% or so, and the screen is off. The same very high pitch noise is there, constant, but with very short interruptions. The noise stops entirely as soon as I turn on the screen and re-appears about two seconds after I lock the phone.
-----
The charger is the original Samsung one, which outputs 1A at 5.0V, so it's not some cheap Chinese charger or anything... What the hell is wrong with it? Is your charger acting the same?
I'm sorry if all this sounds complete rubbish & ridiculous to you, but... I ain't crazy, lol.

It happens. And you are crazy. Look at how much wrote to tell us the air is leaking out your power supply.

Your observation does 100% cover with mine. Might be a capacitor doing this, but it's annoying, I agree.

The Galaxy Note seems to be using the same charger... a friend of mine has it, and he also complains it's making that noise.
A capacitor, that's what I thought, too, but since I can't really know which one is responsible... It hardly seems like it's normal, I mean I had HTC 1A chargers and they were all quiet .

So... no one else's chargers doing this?!

I have a charger bought from amazon, it does this. Same one that comes with the gnex

My charger that came with the Gnex whines too. However I know capacitors don't whine...It's most likely one of the coils/transformer/inductors inside the charger that is making the noise. I noticed that once it's charging it goes away too.

That's funny, cause no other charger I previously owned/use did this. HTC's 1A charger didn't do this, Motorola's 850mA charger didn't do this, Galaxy S2's 700mA charger (same as Galaxy S1) didn't do this...
I think it's because the charger is so small, yet so powerful, and since components are so tied together... Makes no sense, but I guess the technology used in chargers is not yet perfect haha.

It stops, yes, but once my phone's battery is past a certain level (say, 80% or so), the noise re-appears (not the exact same noise, but kind of), ONLY when the screen is off.

Just get a new charger, its defective for sure. Had one that did the same thing, it even got a little warm and it sounded like the "sound grenade" app. Pretty funny, plugged it into my friends room for a couple days and he couldnt figure out where the sound was coming from lol. Swapped it out with another one and no more high pitch annoying sound.

i think every samsung travel charger (the one included with the galaxy nexus, note, etc) make that high pitch noise
they are very cheap..just that..its of course annoing, but anyway it doesn't cause any problem to the phone

Once it reaches near full battery it'll lower down on the amperage, therefore it's like as if it isn't plugged in anymore.

Problems with touch screen when screen is locked and phone is charging...

Since I thought my phone, I've noticed an annoying problem. When my phone is charging in the screen is locked, I go to unlock the phone and the touch screen seems to have a problem registering my touch for the pattern password.
I would unplug it for a second to draw the unlock pattern, unlock the phone, and then proceed about while the phone is plugged back in. Then out of nowhere, it'll do the same thing.
Anyone experiencing this?

I've had this problem - but only when I used a different charger from the one included (even though it's a Samsung charger). Are you using the cable included with the phone?

I can confirm this very issue on two GSII's I've used. It's annoying.

This is a known issue with all variants of the Galaxy S2.
The Galaxy S2 is very sensitive to input voltage, and if it doesn't like what it's getting, the touch screen calibration gets a little funky.
Voltage-regulated chargers (ones that are big and blocky or have a bulb on the wire) tend to work well.
Don't bother exchanging it over this, it won't change anything. You just need a better charger.
Yes, I'm using the same charger came with the phone. I guess we will just settle this issue with the fact that it just gets a little funky When plugged in.

better charger yes
phone being sensitive not really
all Properly build chargers will not cause that problem
i purchase cheap 2A charger from Deal Extreme, but those are build good, not like some of the crappo accessories from ebay
BlackBerry chargers works good too
I have the same problem.
As many of you guys said, a good charger is needed for a stable voltage input.
I have no problems charging from the original charger and my desktop computer.
However the problem shows when I am using my laptop (7 year old) usb.
So a good charger is recommended.
I can confirm this issue, but what i want to know is, why does this happen when the phone is lying flat on a surface while charging and goes away the moment you pick it up? If it was a faulty or imprecise charger issue then the problem should persist?
My guess is it has to do with the EM shielding around the charging module, and that it doesnt do enough to shield the totally normal residual interference from interfering with the touch screen digitizer. When we pick it up, our hand acts as an interference dampener and minimizes the issue while it is charging, to almost negligible amounts. But its just a guess. The chargers might also be generating greater than average interference as well. But just charger alone cannot explain why pickibg up minimizes the problem.
The charger doesn't cause any erratic behavior on my Galaxy Nexus like it does on this phone... So what is the explanation behind that?

What's unfortunate is that the Samsung charger that came with the device causes the touchscreen issues.
Fortunately, I have an HTC charger lying around that works, no problems.
I have seen this happen with the HD2, Evo 4g, galaxy s4g & Sensation. Its a problem with chargers and the voltage. It happens with those chargers from walmart. Its not just the GS2 phones.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Add the Tmo HD7 to the list.... it happens all touchphones on which i believe has grounds surrounding the phone, touching the touch screen stabilizer or whatever you'd like to call it. It's the ground of the charger, nothing to do with charger instability. Take your laptop's charger, plug it into a wall with no 3rd ground (a laptop that has the 3rd prong) and take that same plug, and plug it into a plug with 3 prongs, you'll notice it has that static-like feeling that makes ur fingers tingle (when you touch a metal part of your laptop). It's the same issue with our phones
I hope this helps someone
Just change charger i have noticed that since i work in a cellphone company .... but i change to a different charger and it stopped doing that....
I used another charger but the problem still exist

[Q] possible charger problem

Bit of a strange one, this...
When I unplug my charger (it's a UK one - I have an LTE 1705) it emits a noise for at least 2 or 3 minutes.
I can only hear it when I hold the thing near my ear, but it's definitely there. It sounds like a high pitched buzz or whistle and, I repeat, the sound is emitted when the charger is disconnected from the electricity.
Now, I must point out that I...well, "suffer" isn't the right word...have RF hearing. I'm able to hear RF noise from electrical components. It isn't tinnitus - I have that too (I'm a 44 year old metal-head), and they are completely different - I know if a TV is on in a house before seeing or hearing (normally) it, I can hear high-output LED torches, etc, etc, but this is the first time I've ever heard something that's not actually drawing power.
Is this something to worry about...?
I tot I was alone..
Mine emits a noise when the fone is charged.. its like a buzzing sound..
It disappears when I turn off the power or unplug it..
Also not sure if its something that I should be worried about..

Yes, unfortunately it is a known hardware issue. Over time, the charging port starts coming loose. Like mentioned above, you CAN fix it yourself. There are video tutorials on YouTube and the replacement part can be had for under $10. If your device is still under warranty, Verizon will replace the phone. If it's not under warranty (or if you just want to give it a go), the port replacement process is pretty straightforward.
I might give it a try. Does anybody have a video or a link?
The weird thing is, that the battery is discharging very fast, could it be just a bad battery?

Could b the back door on your inc 2. I believe you need the back door on to charge cuz it goes thru contacts on the back. I dropped mine one day and charging and getting signal was almost impossible till I figured that out and bought a new one
Ok.
Seems to charge now. Won't touch it until it is full. After that I will check what is going on.
I don't know where this issue came from.never dropped it nothing. It was even in a Otterbox
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
The issue stems from regular use. The charging port is essentially held in place only by the connections to the board. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cable causes it to break over time.
actually just replaced the charger port on my incredible 2 today. It really wasn't that difficult at all. If you have any questions feel free to PM me
yeah it has to be replaced. happened to me last month. It's honestly like the worst flaw with this phone

Def need to replace it. Same issues I was having at one point with it randomly taking charge. I found that if the charger is plugged in a held a certain level ( i placed the phone on a flat surface with a book under the cord for leverage) it would charge just fine.
If you are rooted and sending back, make sure you revert to stock to avoid any annoyances.
I've managed to solve this issue without messing around with the phone's innards (the last time I did it was a disaster and I was forced to buy an entirely new phone). It's not pretty, but if you twist a rubber band around the micro usb end of your charger, plug your phone in, twist that same rubber band around the phone itself, and make sure the connection very tight, you might get some more life out of your charger port.
Ugh. I can't wait for my upgrade.

While, I give you major kudos points for MacGuyver-ing a solution, that's more of a quick band-aid than a real fix. I could imagine having a rubber band around the phone could potentially hinder usage.
But hey, way to think outside the box! :good:

Thank you. You're telling me. Do you know how hard it is to use a touch screen with a rubber band across it? Oy.
Right. The caveat here, of course, is that this technique will only help charge your phone until the charging port becomes so disconnected from the board that no amount of force will reestablish this contact. And this will inevitably happen because you're going to keep plugging and unplugging your phone from the charger which is what created the issue in the first place.
If you know you have big, sweaty, idiot hands (like me) that are going to destroy your phone if you take it apart (like me) and you can tough it out: more power to you. The other alternative is to buy an external battery charger and a second battery. The disadvantages here are pretty obvious (e.g. you have to carry a second battery around; if you forget a second battery, you can't ask another Android user to borrow their phone charger, etc.).

Charger Making High Pitched noise

I always knew I had a better hearing capabilities than the average person because when we were studying different sounds frequencies in class I could always hear the frequencies that my classmates couldn't Now that I have my new GS4 and want to charge it Im hearing an extremely high pitched noise... that stops when i unplug the charger... I dont think im super human so im wonder if anyone has heard this or knows exactly what is causing this let me know... Thanks!
try leave the device in other room when charging
I know I had that same problem with my Galaxy Nexus charger. It only happened when I had the charger plugged into the outlet but no to the phone, it went away when I plugged the phone in... Who knows... it never affected functionality.

It's SATAN.
I've noticed the same. It's not superhuman hearing, I have terrible hearing from being blown up a couple times and got the audiology tests to back it up, but I definitely can notice it if I'm within 3-4 feet in a quiet room.
It's nothing to be worried about, I've heard the same from other chargers before. Probably something to do with Samsung upping their chargers to 2A.

Does it sound like coil noise ("capacitor whine")? Defective/damaged/cheap/Poorly-designed caps make a distinctive high-pitched squeal.
Sometimes they'll function like that perfectly for years, sometimes they'll short out in a matter of minutes. Either way, I'd ask for a replacement.
Its gota b an inductor coil. Happens all the time to chargers. You can get a replacement since it wont last as long as it probably should. No problems short term.

I tried for 2 weeks to get them to help me and both tech & customer service were pretty inept. By the time I'd gotten to the point where they were willing to replace the cradle, I decided to just return the thing to Best Buy.
Were I to do this entire thing all over again, I'd have just gone to Best Buy for an exchange. They do it immediately, no questions asked. Asus is hopeless.
But to be honest, I was sorta glad to give it back, charging issues aside. The watch just didn't do enough for me. I liked it while I kept my expectations low and tried not to think about it. But when I did, boy I'd get a bit frustrated with how half-baked it was, even as an early adopter product.

Weird, I feel almost exactly the opposite, that there's very little about it that needs improvement. I guess I'm coming from a different place. I was really an early adopter: I used the first Sony Smartwatch for 2-1/2 years before getting the Asus. Compared to the old Sony, these Wear devices are amazingly good.
Same here. Love mine for now. lol
Could be the problem root cause be that the charger shipped with the cradle has an 1.35 A output , while the cradle itself is badged Input 5V, 0.5A ??? little bit too much current!!!
rdgs
H.
I actually had really good customer service from Asus. I emailed them, got an RMA and sent the watch and charging cradle to them and had it back within a week. They replaced the battery in my watch and gave me a new cradle. I sent the watch too bc I couldn't even power it on. I have pretty happy with it and have had it since Christmas.

I charge watch from PC with USB 2.0 with max current is less than 1A (my guess it is limited to 0.5A) so hopefully it won't overheat. Still enough to fully charge watch in a reasonable time.
No. As long as the voltages match, you should be good. The current needs to be the same or greater than what the watch expects. It will pull what it needs. What would be bad would be an adapter that is greater than 5V. I fried an old Palm PDA that way back in the day when I was getting started. I'd be curious to know if the watch was doing anything intensive when it was charging (something that would keep it on an generate heat and warming the charging paddle up) or if it was placed somewhere that would cause it to heat up?
Hi,
I'm using the usb cable connected to my laptop USB, it takes a long time to charge (sometimes it's seems like it's not charging).
And i also have flickering screen when browsing through the quick settings.
can anyone tell me where i can get a EU charger? i've ordered mine in the US , but i live in europe.
Or maybe i just can use a generic US to EU adapter for the wall charger?
Thanks!
It doesn't work that way. The current rating denotes the max current the watch would ever draw, and the max current capable of being produced by the converter.
The converter can output a maximum of 1350 milliamps, whereas the watch consumes 500 milliamps. There's no way the watch would (under normal circumstances) consume more than 500ma, unless there's a short circuit. I suspect the problem was a thermal issue in the internal lithium-ion battery. If the charge regulator doesn't detect that the battery is fully charged, it won't shut off the input current, and the battery can (eventually) go into thermal breakdown. See Thermal Runaway.
